Aye

Honestly I just wanted to do something sorta active since i haven't really done too much in here lately, and figured I'll ask everyone that I see who posted on this page a question!

I remember this one time i was in a church youth and they were going over shit for secret santa

and the girl writing everything down accidentally wrote it as "Secret Satan"

The fact that the girl writing it down was the pastors daughter only made it funnier for me

Wording wasn't very... good I guess.

Basically I find that it takes away ambiguity more often than not.

I see.

My problems with it are not the cases where it adds or removes ambiguity, which I think is a minority of cases, but it is with other cases where it is ambiguous whether it adds or removes ambiguity.

For example I used to use the Oxford comma when 'and' started a new clause, to indicate the start of a new clause. This would indicate to the reader that 'and' is starting a new clause rather than being part of an enumeration, thus making the sentence easier to read.

But people who are not accustomed to using or reading the Oxford comma will only expect a comma before 'and' when 'and' is starting a subordinate clause. To these readers a comma before 'and' would indicate the start of a subordinate clause. But if I used a comma to start a main clause, those readers would think I were starting a subordinate clause, which would not be the case, thus making the sentence harder to read.

That's the problem it causes.

Though I suppose there are only relatively few situations where 'and' is used to start a subordinate clause...

Hmm, I will have to think about this issue some more, but midnight probably isn't the best time to do that.

So good night, I will bring report of my reflections on the Oxford comma tomorrow.

And happy Sinterklaas to those who celebrate that.
