I'm not really an artsy person, but I don't see what's so wrong with the default portraits that they need replacing in the first place.... I dunno if they even thought they needed replacements~ I think they just wanted to make replacements is all. Art is about creativity and fun, not necessities~! You'd definitely not want to experiment with say, rocket parts, just "out of fun" if there's no significant net gain in changing it...
