I'm looking for a new SRPG series to get into

If you haven't picked one yet (or are looking for more) I strongly recommend Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon for the Gameboy Advance.

It is a remake of the original Shining Force with updated visuals, gameplay tweaks, and is translated better overall. This is the first real RPG of any kind I have ever faced, and I still replay it ever now and again 11 years later. If you are looking for a really tough challenge however, you may want to look elsewhere.

Check out Blackguards and Blackguards 2, they're on PC.

They're pretty good SRPGs.

Check it out if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR7PaSuGmTA&index=1&list=PLD7pUkVnK7FJ_lusj8MZVhZ5oE2RFLRO7

Also what's up with all these people suggesting the most popular games here that aren't even SRPGs? Nevermind.

Back this up with game title(s) that were suggested and why it's not a SRPG (Bravely Default was already covered).

X-Com, Shin Megami Tensei.

Anyways, nevermind.

I want whatever you're smoking if you don't consider XCOM an SRPG.

Also, I specifically named the Devil Survivor series for SMT.

X-Com is generally a tactic-shooter series. Likewise SMT is a JRPG series.

(Edit: Missunderstood you at first.)

X-COM is definitely an SPRG, and Shin Megami Tensei was referring to the Devil Survivor subseries not the series as a whole. The Devil Survivor subseries is definitely an SRPG.

EDIT: wow congrats on editing your post a full 20 minutes after i posted to make me look like a turd

Yggdra Union! If you don't mind grinding all day, you can try the Spectral Souls series, too.

no no no pls no not spectral forces genesis. God no.

I played it on the ds. Please dont make me play it again please I will give you all three of my kidneys, and a copy of romance of three kingdoms 7, which is far from perfect but still much better.

I played as the wolf guy. It takes multiple invasions to take a city like in 3 kingdoms, but with more boredom. I think I had conquered most of the cities and the other dudes were on the ropes, but I stopped playing bc story was virtually nonexistent and the battles are boring. Also, iirc you build up your for spells when you lose troops, so simply healing against a foe with an advantage tends to work fine iirc.

I dont actually remember genesis having exp and levels...

I think most RPGs have tactical elements. An SRPG generally refers to an RPG with a map and movement system. Most work with grids of squares. Somewhat more rarely, there are games with hexagon-filled grids. Phantom Brave actually worked with a circular range of movement. Bravely Default doesn't really have spatial elements.

Is Valkyra Chronicles this type of game? I have seen a version for the PS3 around, but I'm not familiar with sereis. I would like to try out something else like FE or FFT, but I'm not really looking into SMT stuff right now

It's Spectral SOULS, the PSP one~! I'm not masochistic enough to recommend anyone play Spectral Force Genesis, unless they want the full history of the Neverland world (and even then, it's not exactly a SRPG).

It's got a map and movement, but the latter's a lot harder to gauge than something like FE.

Technically clipse, if you want the history of the Neverland-verse, the game you need to play is the Spectral Force remake for PSP. Spectral Force Genesis actually takes place some 200+ years AFTER Spectral Souls.

That Said, Spectral soul is a good series (<3 Hiro), but it CAN get grindy at times.

  • 2 weeks later...

SHining force 1 and 2 cost around 3 bucks each on steam (they are on the wii eshop too, but i don't know how much they cost there), and the gaiden game that got a english translation is on the 3ds eshop (also for around 3 bucks). Havn't played them yet, but i heard that they are exelent, and play really similarly to casual mode fire emblem, only with a few more standard rpg elements, like town exploration (although not in the gaiden game).

Shadowrun: Dragonfall is a lighter SRPG. You have turn based combat on a grid that transitions organically into encounters but you have some leeway to roleplay your way into or out of some combat situations. While not super strict about positioning there are elements of taking cover and different paths you can take your character, either by being a specialist in close-quarters combat, guns, hacking, controlling drones, spellcasting, or even smooth-talking your way through the game. It does focus on your player made character the most but there are some party members to control as well. This was originally an expansion for Shadowrun Returns but they made it a standalone game because the two campaigns were totally disconnected and Dragonfall is superior in pretty much every way. Bonus, the games go on sale all the time because it's an indie PC game so you can frequently find it for $10 or less.

Meh, Shadowrun: Dragonfall is not bad but it's really really bland. It has everything I like but not enough for me to care. It's just a little bit of that, a little bit of this with no depth. I could rather play Enemy Within or Xenonaut than this game despite the lack of role playing since the role playing aspect of Shadowrun is not only limited but also lackluster. At least, the story of the expansion is kinda alright.
