IGdood
SUP SF! IGdood back for more Let's Playing of the XCOM franchise! Previously did a playthrough on Enemy Within http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=44271 >What is XCOM 2? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaSqxZImvjc XCOM 2 follows an alternate story where XCOM took heavy casualties and lost during Month 1. Earth's governments quickly surrendered to the aliens. 20 years later, the Commander/player and Vahlen are missing, Raymond Shen is dead, and Bradford is an alcoholic. At the game's beginning, the Commander is found and XCOM gets back into the action. However, at this point in time the aliens have already established "safe-zone" cities and made themselves to be the good guys. XCOM members are considered terrorists. >What's changed from XCOM 1? Better graphics. A lot of humanoid enemies called the Advent. They form the bulk of the aliens' military and are essentially also the police of alien territory. It's assumed they're humans with alien DNA. The actual aliens themselves from the first game have also been augmented with human DNA to give them a less intimidating look. You'll see them when the game's out. Special mention goes to unit customization. Every piece of your units can be customized, from what they're wearing on their faces to bits and pieces of their armor. Guns can get custom paint jobs and attachments and renamed. You can even write biographies on your characters, give them different accents. This is where you guys come in. Just like before, I need you to pick out how your characters will look and sound and their personal biographies. >Job Classes? Whereas before XCOM represents the global powers and the aliens strike from the unknown, it's the other way around now. XCOM is a guerrilla force, and the opening turns consist of staying stealthed and setting up ambushes. After contact is made, the mission proceeds like that from the first game. The classes will be using the following format: Old Name --> New Name Assault --> Ranger: Able to use rifles and shotguns. Also carries a fuckhueg sword on their back which can be used after a Dashing move. Can choose to specialize in sword techniques or stealth techniques. Heavy --> Grenadier: Able to use grenade launchers and miniguns. Can choose to specialize in blowing shit up or perforating shit up. Support --> Specialist: Commands a flying drone called a gremlin. Can choose to specialize in buffing and healing allies or hacking/stunning enemy robotics to turn them over to XCOM's side temporarily. Sniper --> Sharpshooter: Isn't really different from the sniper in the first game. Able to specialize in using the sniper rifle or in using pistols so they can become effective whilst getting into position. Also, revolvers are fucking sexy. Unknown 5th Class: Jake Solomon said we probably won't be informed what the 5th class is until release. Speculation ranges from a dedicated Psi powers class to a dog to an alien-human hybrid to an alien defector to a infiltrator/saboteur class. Psi Operative: Yup, dedicated Psi powers class. No longer a subclass like in EU/EW. Doesn't level up in battle, only back at the base. Powers that they learn are chosen randomly too. 6th Class: Announced as DLC that will be coming in the summer months after release. Titled "Shen's Last Gift" so possibly like the MEC of Enemy Within. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Customization options pictures begin here, use them to fill this form out: First Name: Surname: Callsign/Nickname: Gender: Preferred Class (choose from Rookie, Sharpshooter, Grenadier, Ranger, Specialist, Psi Operative): Nationality: XCOM Operative, VIP (rescuable NPC), or Dark VIP (enemy NPC): Helmet/Hat: Arms (Specify what type - Kevlar, Resistance Kevlar, Predator, etc): Legs (Specify what type - Kevlar, Resistance Kevlar, Predator, etc):Torso (Specify what type - Kevlar, Resistance Kevlar, Predator, etc): Upper Face: Lower Face: Face Paint: Weapon Camo: Armor Camo: Left Arm Tattoo: Right Arm Tattoo: Scars: Face: Hair (Male): Hair (Female): Facial Hair: Hair Color: Eye Color: Race: Skin Color: Main Armor Color: Secondary Armor Color: Weapon Color: Voice: (determines their accent for English, also there are Spanish, Italian, French and German voices too) Stance & Attitude: Biography: (can be as long as you want) Basic Info Nationalities (affects flag on their back) These options are for your looks Also Armor Color and Gun Color Hat/Helmet Torso, Arms, and Legs Upper Face Props Lower Face Props Camo Patterns for Armor and Gun. IGdood
Why can't this game be released for the PS3? :( Anyway my unit suggestion: name: Juicy Jules class: sniper skin colour: pale hair length: short hair color: brown voice: rather deep Did I forget sth. important? Idc for anything else. I'm looking forward to this LP. When the game is out I'll make a short voiceless video that shows all of the customization options. I think more get unlocked as the game goes on...there's different tattoos and scars you can give to your characters. I think in one of the previews I saw someone get a Jason Vorhees hockey mask. IGdood
Time flies indeed. Already preordered the game and all the DLC. I should get off the internet once the review embargo lifts in a few hours so I don't spoil myself, but at the same part I can't contain the hype. The game is going to be fully moddable, all dev tools will be released to people who purchased the game, and there's already a few Day 1 mods adding a new enemy, weapon, and subclass that isn't just resized/retextured models. New stuff. Firaxis, you're doing fucking good work here. I also took a note of all the customization possible....and a video might take too long to go through. I'm considering taking a shitload of screenshots and then putting them together like I did when I put together the pictures of all the FE Fates generics. For now, this is what the template is going to look like for your character: First Name: Surname: Callsign/Nickname: Gender: Preferred Class (choose from Rookie, Sharpshooter, Grenadier, Ranger, Specialist, Psi Operative): Nationality: XCOM Operative, VIP (rescuable NPC), or Dark VIP (enemy NPC): Helmet/Hat: Arms: Legs:Torso: Upper Face: Lower Face: Weapon Camo: Armor Camo: Left Arm Tattoo: Right Arm Tattoo: Scars: Face: Hair (Male): Hair (Female): Facial Hair: Hair Color: Eye Color: Race: Skin Color: Main Armor Color: Secondary Armor Color: Weapon Color: Voice: Stance & Attitude: Biography:

IGdood
This isn't very helpful if we don't know the available options :v Yeah, I'll reorganize everything in the first post when all the options are available. Just getting hyped as fuck from all the 9/10 scores across the board even though I know I shouldn't trust game reviews completely and I just feel like I have to type something and prepare.... IGdood
Okay, let's get this show on the road. There are some things to clarify first before going into XCOM 2, mainly exactly what happened between EU/EW and XCOM 2. There is a tie-in novel called XCOM Resurrection. The writing is average, nothing too exciting. Mainly serves to inform the player how we ended up in XCOM 2's situation. XCOM lasted one month in Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within. They were making progress, taking losses, etc. They managed to down 2 UFOs: a scout and a supply barge. However, one of the council members (might be bald guy) freaked out decided to defect to the aliens, thinking it would be better for Earth that way. He leaked out XCOM's base's coordinates, so base assault occurred in the first month while XCOM still had only ballistics and kevlar armor. Nothing was left. Most of them were killed, but Shen, Vahlen, and Bradford managed to escape. The commander was captured. Earth's nations quickly capitulated and surrendered. The aliens dominated the planet, and established Advent, the "human" arm of security while the aliens worked from the shadows, augmented with human DNA to improve their combat effectiveness. There is a time gap of 20 years between Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within and XCOM 2. Bradford became an alcoholic, wandering from place to place, seeking comfort at the bottom of a bottle. Vahlen escaped and created an underground volcano base, named Wunderland. There she conducted dissections and biological research on the aliens. However, Advent discovered it and destroyed it, though she managed to escape. Shen also escaped and commandeered a submarine, during which he was de facto leader of XCOM. He also had a daughter, Lily Shen, whom he taught everything he knew. She was also a child prodigy, but is stubborn and doesn't really like to listen to others. She learned her lesson the hard way, having been captured by Advent once after disobeying orders to not wander off on her own to take notes on alien technology. Fortunately, she was rescued, but not before plenty of Resistance members died in sacrifice. Advent and the Elders (aka Ethereals) established new cities over the old capitals of Earth. They wiped out traces of humanity's history, claiming that it was nationalism and that was the thing that kept human's apart. Unification was key. They established gene therapy clinics in these cities that can cure any disease. However, the cures are temporary. You have to live in the city to get the cure. Humans weren't really educated beyond basic skills. No higher knowledge was taught. People sometimes disappeared for dissent. Everyone was being monitored. Humanity was cattle, basically. To drive the point home, pets were banned. Actually, animals were banned. Many humans still did not want to live in these cities. They live in essentially Fallout-style settlements out in the countryside. Advent regularly sends patrols to abduct people from these places. However, their propaganda machine is so efficient that they always manage to blame the disappearances on rebels, resistance members, and XCOM. Speaking of which, there are elements of human resistance against the aliens. However, they're usually undersupplied, undermanned, and untrained. They try their best to fight, but usually only manage to kill a patrol or two before getting wiped out themselves. They see XCOM as a myth and legend, the only successful (albeit partially) effort in fighting the aliens. There's also a contagion, a plague, that freaks the aliens out. Takes the form of spores that enter animals and turns them into zombie-like husks. These infected animals aren't hostile, but they're just kind of....blank. Advent regularly sends flamethrower teams to torch areas contaminated. Anyway, by the end of the novel XCOM manages to jury-rig a supply barge that was shot down. They get past most of the internal security measures except the last one which activates trap doors and cryogenically stored aliens. XCOM took heavy casualties during that trap but managed to prevail. Unfortunately, Dr. Shen was mindfrayed by a Sectoid and died 3 days after the attack due to his body being frail from old age. At the very least, XCOM now has a flying base undetectable by alien radar that they can coordinate operations from. Alright, that's plenty of writing. Let's start this for real. I'm a Veteran of EW! I beat Classic! Unification Day is basically the day the nations surrendered. Advent cities are essentially police states. While most Thin Men have reverted to their true form, which is the Viper, some still stay around as spokespeople of Advent's propaganda machine. Voiced by Garrus Vakarian err I mean Brandon Keener XCOM has been branded as a terrorist organization. Loyal civilians pretty much think XCOM = ISIS. And yes, Bradford got his shit together by the end of the novel, having heard rumors from Resistance fighters about a rising force that is XCOM. Red Advent = Captain Advent Soldiers don't speak English. They speak their own alien language that earned them the nickname "Jabbers" from XCOM. GO LOUD Here's what our standard rookies look like. We only have 2.... Skyranger 2.0. The Skyranger from EU/EW was destroyed. Big Sky (the pilot) was presumed killed. This mission is basically a tutorial. The health blips no longer show 5 per row. Instead the individual blips shorten to fit the window. In EU/EW, we were the military force an the aliens were the invaders. Now, the tables have turned. Getting line of sight on enemies no longer means combat....at the beginning of a mission anyways. XCOM can now sneak up on enemy patrols and decide when to go loud, provided they're not discovered. Identifying dangerous groups and killing them first in an ambush is the way to go. The tutorial pretty much teaches you what NOT to do. Overwatching every member of the squad with the last person taking the shot is what you SHOULD do. I like how enemies still go flying when killed Loot now occasionally drops from dead enemies. They self destruct in 3 turns. Ramirez gets killed, her last words being "Aaah...tell my kids....gaaaah..." Bradford himself takes the field, and curbstomps a dying female Advent trooper. Yes, Advent troopers can be female too. Underneath that helmet is a whole lot of ugly. Missions are a lot more pressured on time now. Before you can just overwatch enemies to death and essentially get through with minimal casualties by running away and using lots of overwatch traps. Now, reinforcements pile on. I heard some missions have turn limits too. Overwatch activation is just like before, except the slow-mo is even more pronounced along with an audio cue. When you tell people to just go, you're probably gonna end up dying. 3 guesses as to what we're here for? Hacking can confer additional bonuses depending on the unit's hack ability. Specialists are used for this, although anyone can hack. Of course, if hacking fails, the enemy might get a buff. IT IS THE GREAT COMMANDY ONE. THE PLAYER. Units can now fall unconscious. Bodies can be carried to retrieve a dead unit's gear. Destructible terrain is always nice. Oh god please don't die Evac is changed from the previous game. Before the zone was established at your original starting position for the mission. Now you get to choose. A new.....enemy (?) appears at the facility we went into earlier. What is this graphical anomaly?! Back to our base (?) This is Dr. Richard Tygan. He's an ex-Advent scientist who saw the immorality of it all and defected. He replaces Vahlen (whose location is unknown after her base got wrecked) as XCOM's chief researcher. Behind him is Lily Shen, Dr. Raymond Shen's daughter. She's in her 30s, according to the novel. People looked so different back then There's something in the Commander that makes every human he sees as alien....or.... something's flipped up here. It's implied that while the first month of XCOM EU/EW happened, the rest of it were all simulations in the Commander's head. Basically the Commander was used to simulate numerous combat scenarios between humans and aliens over the last 20 years, and the data gathered was given to Advent captains for use against Resistance members. More flashbacks What happened to the Commander, I wonder... That photo moves my heart. I hope Vahlen shows up in XCOM 2...
IGdood
Let's see what there is to learn... Can I call myself Commander Shepard now? Nice to meet you too. You're loyal......riiiight? That looks like the skeleton key from EU/EW. And a similar construct was used for a similar purpose in the Bureau/XCOM Declassified. Of course, since they're all canon and are in the same universe, that is to be expected. I kinda miss Vahlen. I'm going to bet the tier 3 upgrade is a fucking katana. If not, somebody's going to mod in a katana. Rangers basically get to use an attack after a yellow move/dash. Of course, this can expose them. TIME FOR REAL MISSION? You guys look like a sorry bunch.....to be honest. TIME TO FAST ROPE It's going to be like a bomb disposal mission isn't it? I hated those... We better hurry up. My genius attempt to spring an ambush hits an obstacle. I'm stuck between 2 pods of enemies. I'm going to make a gamble that I'll kill off 1 pod and the low cover (haha....relying on low cover) will keep my rookies from getting killed by the second pod. Good thing the game tells you if you still retain LoS before you move to a new position. No time to reposition. The fire is spreading and yes, getting burned is a status effect now. Ranger Kelly slices the Captain.....and XCOM goes to work. The second pod attacks. Advent Captains have an ability called Mark, which is like holo-targeting on steroids. It renders an accuracy boost on all allies against that target. They can also shoot after using Mark. Kelly's lucky to still be alive. TIME TO FLANK. ROOKIE VOS, DON'T FAIL ME NOW. A grenade finishes off the second pod! If you're wondering what's wrong with the interface, it's because explosions distort it. Also holy fuck what is this Sectoid. More like a pectoid. I gotta hack this shit soon. Fuck. Vos, you're a rookie. Go out there and hack it, and then hope to the RNG that you don't take a magnetic slug in the face. Jane's wounded, but her powerful sword slash is needed to kill that fucking hunk of meat over there. Note that I placed her not at the very edge of the truck. This is so they won't get LoS on her. Of course, here's hoping the 3rd advent soldier won't flank... But you don't need LoS to toss a frag. Fuck you and fuck your cover. NOOOOO OVERWATCH FAILED I'm not prepared for mind control on the 2nd mission! Vos gets panicked. Instead of hunkering down he runs into full cover and takes a shot. Too bad he misses. OH GOD I SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING Good thing RNG decided to help me 67%? GOOD ODDS. EAT A FUCKING SWORD Killing the Sectoid removes panic from Vos, who gets a free turn. A grenade is administered. I like how wounded squad members collapse as soon as they get back Mmmm, research options. That's what she said. Now let's meet Lily Shen. Oh, how cute! I meant the drone. Press F to pay respects That doesn't look like the medkit from back then I wonder how many people the Commander indirectly killed. We should figure out a way to make our weapons better. If I didn't bring along a ranger, I think we'd have more casualties from the last mission. This is the new memorial. I don't know if Rookies can choose their promotions, but it seems like for now they can't. That mission gives promotions to all these guys We're gonna need more engineers before we can excavate more parts out of this ship Flashbangs might be helpful when you can't kill enemies in 1 turn Time to link up with the Resistance networks. XCOM is back on the grid. Here's my self-insert. Probably won't last past the next mission. We shall see.....
IGdood
MOAR POSTS I'm actually surprised that not a lot of people are commenting or submitting characters. I remember back when Integrity and I did our Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within playthroughs we got a lot of character suggestions. Is it because it's a busy time for everyone or we moved out of the "Other Games" part of the forum? The Gremlin allows for the Specialist to do a lot more than the Support could back in EU/EW. My unit looks like such a tool. Guerrila Ops missions disappear if you don't take it immediately. So we gotta blow up a communications relay or something So....we got a Sectoid + Trooper pair outside of the building on the right. And a Captain + Trooper pair in the building. We stack up in front of the building's left side, hopefully when we go loud the Sectoid group doesn't notice us. The RNG is kind, and the increased damage radius of the Grenadier's grenades means I get to blow the relay and the squad. GOING LOUD The overwatch trap goes poorly, both Eva the Sharpshooter and Specialist whatshername miss. Fortunately Recruit KC scores a hit. Oh for fuck's sake When you absolutely want troopers dead, use a grenade. As our luck would have it, to the far left side of the building off in the trees there's yet another Sectoid + trooper pair. Was about to get flanked, but the trooper from the left-side enemy group gets overwatched Enemy reinforcements are coming in, and we're kinda in a tight spot since we got enemies on both sides. Since every shot for that turn was 10-15%, we blow the relay. The Sectoid tries to get around our right flank. Since Sharpshooters can't use their rifle after moving, Eva whips out her pistol and proceeds to fucking miss. That Sectoid proceeds to mindrape Collins, causing her to panic and.......DASH RIGHT INTO THE ENEMY REINFORCEMENTS 52% shot, couldn't flank in time. CAN KC DO IT? The rookie nails the shot, weakening the Sectoid enough to be finished off by a grenade. Killing the Sectoid also removes the mindrape. And so the Sectoid from the far left shows off a new Sectoid ability: Psi Reanimate. Yes, you thought Chrysallids made zombies didn't you? Well the new Sectoid can do so too. I miss them when they were just weak grey things with 3-4 HP and a dinky pistol.... 3 Advent troopers couldn't kill a Specialist. Well, technically 2. The last 1 went on overwatch to keep Collins from moving without getting shot without cover. Another 50% shot. Let's try it. Overwatching trooper is killed! Specialist Collins can now move. Apparently, flash bangs -> disorient -> disoriented Sectoid -> psi powers canceled because his concentration broke Collins rushes up the roof and decides to mete out her revenge on the asshole who shot her Unlucky Vos takes a shot. And....panics. But in his panic he shoots the Sectoid...and scores a hit. Yet another lucky 50% shot. The rookie goes grab some loot, and then proceeds to miss a shot at the remaining Sectoid. But now that the Sectoid has no cover.....all we need is hope for a 79% shot to hit. BOOM. That gravely wounded animation man.... Vos goes for shredder I get promoted to specialist. Awesome. Collins, having demonstrated her ability to kill shit and not die in the process, goes down the Combat route. Eva gets Long Watch. This may help. Gone is the currency of old. It's about supplies now. This ship still has many dark corners to explore. At least...no more geothermic vents right? OH HEY, IT'S BALDY! So...this is the strategic map now. We have to actively go out there and look for things. No satellites, no interceptors. It's about scavenging supplies and investigating leads. Each event takes a few days to complete. Also have to account for travel time when considering time-sensitive events. This one was made for you, Mister IceTeaPeach! So if you preordered this game, it came with a Resistance Warrior Pack DLC, which just adds some customization models. I was wondering whether or not it was activated. Turns out you have to first equip your units with Resistance Kevlar armor for the torso models to show up. The other parts of the DLC were the facial rings and studs and the face paint. And the ski mask and some other face masks. Will also update the OP with these armor torso options. XCOM 2 was also released with mod tools...well more like the entire dev kit used to make the game. So already, there's Day 1 mods. I just subscribed to a SMG mod which adds an alternate short range weapon that can be used in place of an assault rifle or shotgun. Due to its light weight it confers additional mobility, which is very useful for the close combat Ranger. Let's scan for some rookies. This will let us put attachments on our weapons! Next up, resistance comms. More events = better. Sharpshooters can always use more aim. And specialists. Argh, need more supplies. I need that squad size boost ASAP Ex-EXALT? IGdood
More strategic map madness Looks like we'll still get council missions. Good, because we need more engineers to excavate shit and Tygan won't stop asking for more scientists to staff the labs Taking a long a new recruit. He doesn't even get armor, hah. So, gotta get the VIP from there A double of doubles. Sectoid-Trooper pairs. I like how the faces of your current squad show up on Wanted Posters He looks pretty pissed. Too bad overwatch got him. KC gets panicked because mind rape....and retreats. If you can't kill 'em, flashbang 'em. Or smoke grenade. But i prefer flash bangs since Sectoid psi powers are fucking annoying I almost forgot Sectoids had plasma pistols. Ouch. Your overwatch cannot hit me! You've been disoriented, sucker! Enemies will respond to you flanking them by flipping their shit. Gremlins let you hack things without needing to be up close and personal. Boohoo. We got a tight schedule, but a breather might be fine. 2 Troopers? Frag out. Almost there! And we got reinforcements incoming. Fortunately you can just camp the place with overwatch PERFECT KILLS. And we're out. This was a good mission. Sharpshooter didn't have many good positions to shoot from, so no kills = no promotions Demolition lets you remove cover, saving frags for more critical situations. I go for med protocol A fitting look VIP secured. Tygan will be pleased. Graphical glitch.... Permanently increasing income sounds awesome Humanity might have hope after all Magnetic weapons will take 19 days to research. Let's start with the fast projects first. For the time being, I'll stick with the grenades. Do we get bloody autopsy scenes? Sorta. There's actually a lot more dialogue going on when you idle around on the Avenger. Tygan doesn't really like Shen not trusting him. SUDDENLY CUTSCENE TERROR MISSIONS ARE BACK AND MEANER THAN EVER. You actually have a quota of civilians to save. Good old-fashioned, no concealment battle. I'll take it. Also, Demolishing can miss, so you can easily waste 2 ammo just like that. Oh dear. Every killed civilian has a name. Shiiiit. >Sectoid tries to Mindspin Vos >"Git outta my head" At least swords can be relied upon. Also, rescuing civilians is just like in EU/EW. Move your guys into the radius. And yes, the enemies will target civilians over your guys just to piss you off. That Advent captain took a beating. She even survived a direct sword hit.... But one thing I noticed about the enemy AI. If you flank them, more often than not they'll make a run for it to reposition. That's when it's better to overwatch/suppress instead of taking a low percentage shot. Overwatch shots may carry a small aim penalty, but the enemy is out of cover so it evens out. AND THEN A RESCUABLE CIVILIAN TRANSFORMS INTO THIS FUCKING CREATURE TRUST NOBODY It also gets a free dash on your squad. FUGGIN DIE
IGdood
One more for tonight. It seems that these Faceless activate automatically after you kill every non-disguised enemy on the map. Otherwise....they're here to make even rescuing civilians a gamble. Simon gets Blademaster. Kelly gets Phantom. Maybe Simon should get the SMG for mobility since his sword is now incredibly powerful. 5% instant kill? Nice. Supplies? I'm going. This is the equivalent of "research" for the aliens. Dark events don't last forever, but when they activate they make XCOM's life a pain in the ass. I miss the little ayys This would be very useful for Grenadiers and Rangers. Yup, this confirms the theory that the Commander was forced to work for Advent. I hopefully did not advance the main plotline too much with this First comms, now radio. Gonna need this so I can promote rookies automatically without bringing them into the field where they might be a liability. You can recruit engineers and scientists back at HQ, but holy shit they're expensive Time to make co--oh wait another guerrilla ops mission popped up Well...let's do it. With that repeater. Hack a terminal. Gotcha. I was deciding to take the shot, but then I spot a patrol across the street.... I did not think they would move onto the roof....however. And so the ambush got fucked and they spotted the squad instead. Well done, me. A new enemy, it seems. At least I still had enough sense to put everyone into overwatch so a bit of damage was done. Setting cars on fire can be useful to deter enemies from taking cover by them, lest they explode. Sometimes the AI is stupid and gets killed this way. Stun Lancer walks into rookie Andrea's sights annnnd gets killed. Fortunately he didn't get a chance to stab anyone. Unfortunately I moved my guy into a bad spot...and uncovered not one but TWO fucking turrets. And a sectoid reaminates a corpse. Andreas gets shot. KC barely survives 2 turrets spraying his face Oh shit, these things have armor. I don't think I'll be able to make the time limit Vos panics.....fuck Annnnd the turret kills poor Andreas. Yeah, I should've retreated instead of staying there But, like the incompetent Commander that I am, I send Simon to disembowel the Sectoid Only to piss off another Sectoid waiting in a corner. GG Who then proceeds to reanimate poor Andreas' corpse. I can't make it, Bradford! Simon chops zombie Andreas to bits, then gets a defense boost because the turrets will want to spray him. Badass motherfucker The mission is failed, but it might be a partial success by killing everyone else. I'm fine with that. I like how everyone gets upset when you fail the mission. At least they're alive... I go for Haywire Protocol Simon gets Shadowstep. Bypassing overwatch is going to be fun. It's not Lightning Reflexes though, so the enemy won't waste an overwatch. And the loot is....quite nice. Especially that advanced stock. Baldie seems to be disappointed. Soldiers can get PTSD huh? Shit... And by failing that mission, a Dark Event is not countered. IGdood
Heh, thanks. Funny you chose ranger....I'm in need of a few more because....well you'll see....soon. Wait a second, Jules picked Grenadier not Sharpshooter. I fucked up last night. I think. Or maybe it's a bad case of "THAT'S XCOM, BABY!" So you think you can drag things out and just farm missions? NOPE. The game gives you a countdown timer to an instant game over. Bloody hell. Where do I even start? Well, ignoring that for now. We can build the Proving Grounds which will give us better and improved items. Crap, power requirements Shen Jr. really is a suspicious one? Then again, to make it this far in XCOM...I'm not surprised. Hell, even people who aren't loyal to Advent can get bugged with an implant so small and deep in their bodies that they don't even realize it. That's how Vahlen's base got found in the novel. I thought this would give a passive boost but it looks like we have to build radio relays in territories under our control We need ways to take down Captains and Sectoids in one shot. I hope I'm not wasting too much time gathering supplies Oh boy, we may have hit the motherlode. But first, let's put this baby on. Time to experiment with the Ranger builds Sweet. No time limit. And a new enemy, the Snek err I mean Viper. I'm surprised there's no Day 1 mod allowing people to recruit Vipers, given how much lewd fan art they got. So much that even Firaxis started poking fun at it on tweets and facebook posts. You can hide inside an enemy's detection zone IF you were originally outside of it before they walked by. Also there has to be a piece of cover blocking their view. If they walk into a flanking angle, they will spot you. GO LOUD, SIMON. WITH A DASH ATTACK! THE GODS WILL FEAR YOUR NAME Well, she looks kinda unfazed there. Yes, the Thin Men used to be chicks. Well, that torrent of bullets will solve any problem I was surprised Kelly didn't do Overwatch. Then I remembered she had Phantom, which means she stays in Concealment. And I got an idea from EW. With the gene mod Mimetic Skin, you can scout maps and have Squadsight snipers clear out the place. I wonder if I can do the same.... Found some victims 2 squads HAH. IT WORKS. THEY DON'T EVEN GET ALERTED if they're killed. Unfortunately they do go into alert status if they only get injured, and I put Simon a bit too close for comfort. Until now, I've always managed to kill Stun Lancers before they could charge. These fuckers run so far they can cover almost twice the distance your own guys can move. Except maybe your Rangers. Did I mention Stun Lancers have a passive chance to insta-KO (or insta-kill if you're extra unlucky) your guy with a crit? Simon is one tough/lucky bastard I lost the loot. COLD STEEL I'll try not to kill blow the supplies, but I need that Sectoid to MOVE. Kelly's been waiting for the perfect moment this entire time. Now time to finish them off. Good mission. Eva gets a promotion. She'll take the sniper tree This might be interesting. Finally made contact with New India! New India links to all these areas. A perfect place to install a radio relay. When not busy excavating, you can assign engineers to boost room bonuses or speed up construction Relay complete. Completing the GTS will let us improve the squad as a whole and allow us to train Rookies into another class so we won't need to take them into the field. Hopefully. Woohoo, squad size 5! Although you can mod the game to have squad size 40......frickin Beaglerush is based Yes I'll get to it...but let me check the black market out first Oh for fuck's sake That really doesn't look good. New council mission but there's a UFO there. Now I'm not sure what happens if you run into a UFO I'm sorry Ugh, the clock is ticking and this game is actually stressing me out Annnnnd all those days of scanning the Black Market and I realized they want Intel, not Supplies. Crap. I'm kinda low on Intel. And you need Intel to do things on the map You can see Julian hard at work Bad call, BAD CALL. It takes intel to make contact again with the Resistance. FUCK FUCK FUUUUCK. FUCKING UFO At this point, I was considering quitting the game to study for my exams. Jake Solomon, you may drink my tears I thought you could avoid UFOs by just staying on the ground and scanning. I have never been so wrong. I fucked up. Again. Did I hit an early bad ending? My Mass Effect 3 experience tells me this is bad Apparently not. There's a spike device that deploys EMP waves to keep the Avenger grounded. We have to hold back Advent's forces, destroy that spike, then double time it back to the Avenger. Also, not one enemy can step foot onto the Avenger's ramp. >Difficult Oh no. Simon and KC will have to go into battle with 1 less hit point. IT'S DO OR DIE. CHARGE! FOR THE COMMANDER It's the first of many. They walked right into a trap. Sorta. Every few turns or so Bradford will send out reserves, so you can end up controlling more than 6 units. Unfortunately these are all rookies, so I have no choice but to use them for their frag grenade and then they can just be meatshields. IGdood
The misadventures continue! For the time being we seem to be able to hold them off, but we have to advance. And when that happens, we'll get massive LOS below. And that means a lot of enemies are going to see us. I've yet to have a Viper shoot me. Or use special abilities on me. Good thing. I don't want to find out. Kill first, ask questions and dissect later. I was hoping nobody would see Kelly. Unfortunately in their attempt to flank me, they found her. They just won't stop coming, and I need to reload fast. Fucking Stun Lancers trying to come from the sides Plenty of corpses for a Sectoid to reanimate.... As Kelly scouts out the spike....yeah of course there'd be guards. Simon makes his way to support, killing off sneaky troopers That fucker managed to not die. When in doubt, finish 'em off with the Gremlin. Bzzzt Did I mention there's aliens just crawling out of everywhere? Fortunately, stun lancers manage to put themselves in dumb positions because AI can't do Ranger style fighting. Of course the AI doesn't care if it dies, they only care about your precious soldiers who took 6 hours in the customization dying. FUCKING DIIIIIIE OH LAWDY WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT Yes, more guards at the spike. MECS?! I thought the snake squad was the only team of guards. I'm sorry Simon. This loot would be great if we lived to tell the tale afterwards Mecs have armor, which reduce damage taken. Good thing we got Shredder here Simon, you must live! A stun lancer tries to go get a rookie. Except he/she is 1 space short. OH GOD REINFORCEMENT'S EVERY TURN? WE'RE FUCKED PLEASE JUST DIE ALREADY Yes, I do know that Advent is pretty much pulling their entire sector's worth of forces to this location Simon is suppressed by the MEC. But good thing grenades don't miss. Vos is in shock that reinforcements landed right on top of him SIMMMOOON NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO The loss of a senior squad member sends the rookies into a panic. And KC also, because he's Shaken. They proceed to run around and miss their shots. Eva avenges Simon, killing the shredded Mec with a single shot. Meanwhile the rookies that didn't panic go after the spike. At least they have 100% accuracy there At this point I don't even know what I'm doing, just playing it by ear. Flank if I can, explosives if I can, and reloading if there's no other choice. The spike is down. Now we got a problem. If we wait any longer, the aliens will fuck us up. Kelly's kind of stranded close to the spike. The rookies are everywhere, but they're expendable. Eva and Vos can make it back in time, probably. Reinforcements EVERY TURN now consist of 1 Mec + 2 Stun Lancers. We can't deal with that kind of opposition. Oh, they landed 2 stun lancers right next to the ramp. They need to die, but everyone's out of ammo. Drastic measures and sacrifices to the RNG must be made. Volkov tosses a frag, and then we hope the rookies can finish off the lancers IT'S WORKING Rookies aren't utterly worthless after all! This pod of reinforcements dropped close to the spike wreck. They won't be trouble for now....I have a rookie nearby to draw their fire. Unfortunately that frag grenade for the ramp defense set fire to a piece of wall, which inflicted burning stats to poor Coleman here. Your sacrifice will be remembered Most of our guys are gathered at the ramp now. Mecs have mortars from their back, which blows the shit out of cover Volkov draws enemy fire. I hope he lives. Really. Kelly's finally made it back! We manage to finish off a mec as a final fuck you before dusting off. That 1 rookie close to the spike couldn't make it back in time. I don't know if abandoned squad members get executed or captured or whatever, but we can't stay. That was stressful. A fitting loading screen We survived, and I suppose it could've been much, much worse. But I still don't feel good about Simon dying Vos gets Heavy Ordnance. Kelly gains Shadowstrike I forgot what I picked for myself Collins gets Haywire I guess I should say this mission really shook me up too. I need to find a better way to counter these dark events But at least we don't have a UFO pursuing us anymore... We need better things to counter MECs The Proving Grounds don't tell you what they'll give you. There's some RNG involved in the process. We got a lot of rookie promotions. Julian is ready for his first op. He can join as the 5th guy for the Guerrilla squad ops. Meanwhile, we're gonna need a new Ranger. Or perhaps a Gunslinger-Sharpshooter?
