Tripletriad from FF8.

XD Just tell me who I need to play to get rid of that damn random rule. Gah I remember accidentally spreading that rule all over the know world... I ended up using card mod to get rid of all my crap cards so I didn't get screwed over by the rng...

if Skinship is out, I admit I have mixed feelings. on one hand, I'm just kinda lol'ing because I thought this feature was pretty dumb in the first place. but on the other, as a game design student, I feel like the assets are being wasted, especially since the characters look so beautiful in the Skinship feature......

....& I also just REALLY want to hear Mamoru Miyano & Yoshimasa Hosoya whispering in my ear BUT I DIGRESS.

& I'm totally down for that suggested card game lol

all in all, I hope we get an official announcement soon if this junk turns out to be true.

What's considered appropriate in Japan may not be considered appropriate in the west, you know. Different cultures and beliefs and all that. Did you know that certain people in the world find a thumbs-up gesture offensive, while us in the US use it to say they approve of something in a "great job!" or "awesome!" manner? I forget which country views the gesture as offensive, but I read somewhere that one does. I think it was Thailand or Taiwan or something. But you get the point.

I thought the West valued multiculturalism. Quite frankly, I'm not sure a harmless gameplay feature like this is comparable to an obscene gesture.

"Japan being Japan" doesn't fly for a localization of a game that isn't only set in an analogue of the Far East (if not just pre-Meiji Japan).

uh, setting of the game doesn't matter as it's still Japanese-made. It was made by people from Japan which has a different set of cultural norms than Western countries. As such it's why you get such unique interpretations of Western fantasy from them.

Anyway, can't say I'm surprised about this. We all know that if Nintendo kept it they'd never hear the end of it so best to just cut out the problem and let journalists find clickbait elsewhere.

I also find the wording on the Kotaku article really...entitled? That's probably not the right word for it but it's this sentence alone that I'm fishy about: "Nintendo confirmed to me that petting is 100 percent out." I agree that Skinships is a pretty 'big' optional feature in this game, which is why I'm skeptical on why Nintendo would tell this to one person rather than making a public announcement like their previous statements a few days ago.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but that's what my gut is telling me.

What's fishy for me is that they cherrypicked a part of the text Nintendo sent.

In fact, what they quoted doesn't really mean anything without context, at least to me.

If they can find a new, not-sketchy-as-fuck use of the Live2D assets, I'd consider that a solid victory for the localization. I do like looking at the character models up close but would prefer a more savory application.

I'm down for the Card Game as long as the A.I. isn't a cheating piece of shit. I still have nightmares about Pazaak...

Haha sorry but if there is a card minigame in a videogame then there will be a cheating piece of shit AI.

I have nightmares about playing Black Jack in Dead or Alive: Paradise, or in GOD HAND, or in Yakuza.

Wait... maybe this simply means that gambling is bad.

I feel like if they were to replace Skinships with something else that still utilizes the models, I feel like they would prompt the player to choose multiple different responses and based on what they choose, it'll trigger the character to say certain things based on the player's response and then their affection/support level will increase that way. Kind of like how in otome games, you're character will like you more based on the things you say to them. And then they'll eventually say their special lines when certain ranks have been reached.
