unit designs (both characters and generics) a bit absurd?

Recommended Posts

Ever since the first stills of this game were released, there have been rumblings on these forums regarding the unit design. Whether it is battle panties, beserker crotch-shots, thigh-gap armor or Camilla's exposed... vitals... there are a fair number of oddball unit designs on both sides. To my knowledge, there isn't a dedicated thread to talking about just the unit designs. Therefore, I ask: Do you think the unit designs are a bit absurd, and if so, which units are the worst offenders in your view?

(oi Thane! Remember how I said I was going to set up a thread for this? Well here it is! I summon you!)

To answer the question for myself to start. Yes, there are a few absurd designs. The ones that really grind my gears are the female cavaliers, great knights, paladins, and sky knights. Speaking as someone who has done long-range horseback riding, not covering your skin with something like blue jeans or canvas is asking for severe chaffing and other uncomfortable injuries. Yet in Fates, the aforementioned classes are wearing skirts and battle panties. The comes a point when fanservice becomes too much, and at least for the unit design, this was my point.

The thigh holes all look completely terrible and so does the strategic cleavage and random holes on things like F!Bow knight.

Mercenary looks awesome though and more designs should be like that.

ye Fates's art director is high or something, the battle panties look really stupid. basically the only outfit in Fates I like is the female mercenary's outfit, the rest i'm either indifferent on or they just look stupid (what the fuck why the hell do armor knights, freaking armor knights wear battle panties)

and the maid class has earned a spot as my least favorite FE class, god I thought they couldn't get any more stupid after Bride

It's just so unnecessary and awkward. I can honestly say that i find nothing appealing about these designs. And it's just insulting how it is almost exclusively with female outfits. Sorceror doesn't balance that out.

Peri has pants in her default model. She loses them upon promotion. It rankles me a bit. Peri isnt the sort to go around without trousers.

It's really just female Generals and Paladins showing off their asses that bother me. Like if you want to do fanservice, things like Maids and Sorcerers are fine since they're actual designs as opposed to just removing pants from the equation.

Aside from the battle panties (and I do take issue with this), I'd say the class outfits are some of the best of the entire series. Heroes, Great Knights, Wyvern Riders....all that armor porn.

Shit, yeah. The Hero redesign is beautiful. And i couldnt help stare at it in the accessory shop. A lot of the Hoshidan classes look nice too. I like Berserker because of the floof and its the same between genders. The Dark Falcon outfit is wonderful too.

I saw the female version of the Dark Falcon and thought "eh, this is okay" and then I looked at the male one and it's like "Full breastplate! It's now incredibly manly to be riding a flying pony!"

Dread Fighter and Dark Falcon generics fucking when!?

The only design that I think looks really ridiculous is the dark mage design.

Ophelia looks the most ridiculous of all.

I don't mind battle panties and cleavage.

:o i still havent seen the Dark Falcon man model. Soooon...

maybe dlc, dude

I don't get what the helmet of the generic Berserkers is supposed to be based on. That being said, I kind of find the flag sticking out of the Spear Masters' backs a bit irksome.

Dude, generic Zerker helms are bomb! ANTLERS!!!! I also love that flag, whatchutalkinbout

The flag accessory is glorious on Bow Knights. It's instant NIPPON BANZAI to everything it touches.

Count me in the camp that considers everything aside from battle panties to be amazing. The armor is so much prettier than it was in Awakening and has such a nice unique flavor to it. Hero and Paladin look the best they've ever been. And don't get me started on Archers/Snipers. Their fur pelt is just everything.

Falcon Knights look great in this game. There are others that I like as well (shoutout to generic maids) but that was the first thing to come to mind upon initially opening this thread.

As fanservice-y the dark mage and sorcerer designs are, I absolutely love them. Mainly for Odin's abdominal muscles. As for the sky knights, while not functional, I just kind of shrug because the female pegasus knights have had that uniform since forever. I only remember the pegasus knights in the Tellius series having tights/pants on. Caeda, as well, if I remember correctly. There might be more that I'm overlooking.

The fighters and berserkers, I shudder thinking about them. No, I don't want no man ass in my face.

Am I the only one who thinks Camilla would have looked sexier with leather pants? They should have gotten rid of that sheer garter thingy and those underwear.

I miss the artist for the Tellius series. Senri Kita had the best art, in my opinion. No offense to the current artist but the art director or whoever is making me cringe with some of these art choices.

Probably some of my favorite armor designs is (as opposed to Awakening's) it the wyvern lord and maligknight generic armor (emphasis on generic because camilla exists). And while I have a long-held hatred of boob plates, the thing that rankles me most is battle panties. Specifically, battle panties on mounted units. Like the OP, I do a ton of lengthy horse riding and not wearing pants is the best way to have some nasty injuries from the saddle rubbing your fucking skin off. I'd imagine on flying units such as wyverns and kinshis the pain and inconvenience would be even WORSE.

Additionally, while not the worst offender, the armor for Femcorrin is disconcerting in that, unlike Awakening's example, the armor is different between genders and more fanservice-y and exposed for the female option. This can be REALLY concerning for some people who use the avatar as a self insert and said self insert is sexualized without an option otherwise.

I'm not a fan of battle panties but I think this game has some fantastic designs, specially when it comes to generics. I actually can't think of a generic that I dislike

Generic Malig Knight is probably one of my favorite designs in the series. It almost reminds me of SMT

People with refined tastes, both of you.

It makes me laugh (rage) that Camilla is designed the way she is when the Fem!Revenant Knight armor has both (stylish) pants and armor covering the chest.
