Jedor
Frey-Freyr. Frey sounds like a pussy name, Freyr doesn't. The second r is his name. HE NO LONGER HAS A NAME. IIRC its always been Frey, Freyr was just a mistranslation that we got used to before it was fixed.

Judge Judy
My least favorite character translation is Shiida..I don't know..why on Earth did they have to change the dam names in the first place <_< Ah but it doesn't bother me that much Edited December 7, 2008 by Mad Sage
VincentASM
IIRC its always been Frey, Freyr was just a mistranslation that we got used to before it was fixed. It was more like taking liberties with translating. If we had used Frey, there's a chance some people would go "WTF is Frey? It's supposed to be Freyr, because it's a real name/mythological reference!". Using Freyr kind of backfired for us, but I'm sure people will get over it. Ice Dragon
Jeigan > JagenGordon > Gordin Doga > Draug Riff > Wrys Barts > Barst Saji > Bord Maji > Cord Kashim > Castor Navarre > Nabarl Maric > Merric Zagaro > Sedgar Roshe > Roshea To be more precise... here's the entire list of playables: [Official JP] [Fan translations from the top of my head] - [Official EU English] [Notes] Marth - Marth Frey (Freyr) - Frey (I originally, on FESS at least, picked the name 'Freyr' due to mythological reasons; I never expected the 'r' to actually stay, as it never did for any Norse references except in 'Fimbulvetr'.) Abel - Abel Kain - Cain Jeigan - Jagen Gohdon (Gordon) - Gordin Dohga (Doga) - Draug Norn - Norne Sheeda - Shiida Rif (Riff) - Wrys Oguma - Ogma (Mythological; get over it.) Barts - Barst Maji - Bord Saji - Cord (I forget which one of Maji and Saji became which of Bord and Cord.) Kashim - Castor Daross (Daros) - Darros Jurian (Julian) - Julian Rena (Lena) - Lena Nabarl (Navarre) - Nabarl Marich (Maric) - Merric Matis (Machis) - Matthis Hardin (Hardain) - Hardin Wolf (Ulf) - Wolf Zagaro - Sedgar Roshe - Roshea Biraku (Villuck) - Vyland Wendel - Wendell Ricard (Ricardo) - Rickard Athena - Athena Banutu (Banetou) - Bantu Seazer (Caesar) - Caesar Radei (Raddy) - Radd Rojar (Roger) - Roger Jorjue (George) - Jeorge Maria - Maria Minerba (Minerva) - Minerva Rinda (Linda) - Linde Jeik (Jake) - Jake Midia - Midia Tomth (Toms) - Dolph Mishelan - Macellan Thormas (Thomas) - Tomas Boha (Boa) - Boah Horace - Horace Beck - Beck Astria (Astoria) - Astram Paora (Paola) - Palla Katua (Kachua) - Catria Aran (Alan) - Arran Samson - Samson Cheine (Chainy, Chainey) - Xane (That's totally pronounced 'zane'.) Etzel - Etzel Est - Est Tiki (Chiki) - Tiki Rolence (Lawrence) - Lorenz (That's totally pronounced 'lorentz'.) Hymir - Ymir (That is in fact the 'proper' romanization of his name.) Elice - Elice ? - Nagi (Her internal name is 'Naga', but the Japanese is clearly 'Nagi'.) Gato (Gatoh) - Gotoh My comments... - Marth should have been changed. It would have been awesome. - Cain is agreeable. Agreeable means I am indifferent. - Jagen is stupid. - Gordin is stupid. Gordon would have been agreeable. - Draug is moronic. That is worse than stupid. - Norne is unnecessary. That is not as bad as stupid. - Shiida is stupid. - Wrys is moronic. - Ogma is agreeable. - Barst is moronic. Switch two letters ftw. - Bord and Cord are too funny to not like. - Castor is stupid. - Darros is unnecessary. - Julian is agreeable. - Lena is agreeable. - Merric is agreeable. - Matthis I couldn't care less about, much less his name. - Sedgar is amusing. - Roshea is the same as undoing Ruthea to Lucius. - Vyland is stupid, but I don't care about him anyways. - Wendell is unnecessary. - Rickard is agreeable. - Bantu... I couldn't care less about. - Caesar... same as Bantu. - Radd is stupid. - Roger is agreeable. - Jeorge is plain moronic. - Minerva is agreeable. - Linde is moronic. - Jake is fine. - Dolph is amusing, but stupid. - Macellan is dumb. - Tomas is dumb. - Boah is dumb. - Astram is meh. - Palla fails. - Catria also fails. - Arran is unnecessary. - Xane... fails at life. - Lorenz is stupid. - Ymir is agreeable. - Gotoh fails. Verdict: Xane is the worst. IIRC its always been Frey, Freyr was just a mistranslation that we got used to before it was fixed. Not exactly a mistranslation. It was just not what IS was thinking. A 'mistranslation' would be on the magnitude of [tito] to Tate (cough) or higher. Edited December 8, 2008 by Ice Dragon
BlueRose95
When I have played today ,when reading "Is that you Merric"; "My name is Xane" WTH !!! FAILL Those thing just pissed me off for the day , I especially hate Kashim > Castor (mean beaver in french >_>) Marich > Merric ( NO !) Sheeda > Shiida (don't know why, i just hate) NUMBER ONE = Cheine > Xane (CURSE YOU NoE! You have ruined him =_=") And many other but I am happy Chiki get her japanese name Tiki Edit: I meaned NoE sorry XD Edited December 8, 2008 by BlueRose95
The Blind Archer
NUMBER ONE = Cheine > Xane (CURSE YOU NoA!! You have ruined him =_=") ... you're aware that this is the European version, right? NoA had nothing to do with these translations. >_>
Rodykitty
Marich > Merric ( NO !)I'm seeing a lot of hate for the name 'Merric' and don't understand why. It's practically the same, just spelled differently.Xane is a truly horrid name though. When butchering a character's name, at least don't choose an awful, unfitting name... Starwolf_UK
... you're aware that this is the European version, right? NoA had nothing to do with these translations. >_> It is highly likely they are. NOEs English translation team consists of like a person while the other teams are 2 or 3 strong (so mutliple projects can be handled...). I'll check out the credits and run a basic search on the names but if I see Nate Birchof (I'm not sure I got the surname right) NOA are responsible for certain. Kiddo
Yeah. For many of the characters, their names and their death quotes are the closest you got to anything resembling character personality or development... I myself am not too bothered by the changes though. Even if some of them go out of their way to try to look different to a point, at least they aren't like bad puns or something 4Kids-like. Celice
I would, since I'd be using the original names in every mentioning of the characters. And it's not like I know the translated names off the top of my head >.>
thunderstrife
Guys... I had the worst revelation...Xane rhymes with "Cheine". Gosh dangit, this is probably what they were thinking. :( In English anyway, they don't rhyme. チェイニー = CHAY-NEE Since English is completely retarded, Xane could be pronounce a few ways, potentially, but it is most likely, that give it's spelling it's pronounced ZAY-N (like brain, chain, plain, etc). Pronouncing it ZAY-NEE is sort of stretching the language for all it's worth. Edited December 9, 2008 by thunderstrife
Jari
None of the new names are better, only just as good/bad at most. Some are a lot worse. There are 3 names which have a meaning in Dutch. These are Jagen (means hunting, that's not too bad), Bord (means plate, wtf) and Barst (which means crack, like "a crack in the wall"). But why take the time to change their names? Alright, they were Japanese but couldn't they come up with something better than these?

Chainy, Doga, Zagaro, Lawrence, Maji, Saji, Kashim, Villuck, and Tomth disagree with you, they don't even know thier names in this game, Jagen is pronouce the exact same way... Nabarl has always been his name <___________< ナバル = NABARU ~=Nabarl Navarre is just a looser romanization that's said essentially the same, similar to Maric vs. Marich vs. Merric

Super Mecha Death Christ
Linda -> Linde? Well, Linda just makes too much sense. Jeigan -> Jagen This pisses me off because it fucks with a term we've known for years. Instead of calling someone a Jeigan, we have to call them a Jagen Nyna? What? Mars -> Marth WTF? Mars sounds better. I think NOA changed these names to also fuck with the anime. Now the anime's names mostly don't make any sense to newer fans. Altera the Hun
The Marth thing was decided way back with Melee, and I believe the decision was made in the original Japanese version to name him so.
