Improve your least favorite character.

These discussions always have me bringing up Fates. I don't like every character in every other game, but I've never considered them so awful that they MUST be fixed.

Xander: 80% of this is just fixing Garon so he isn't so obviously evil, but give more reason to make Xander's bias for Garon seem reasonable. Show us the generally positive relationship they shared and give him reasons for why he fights for Garon/Nohr besides "muh loyalty". I want to see him consider Corrin's viewpoint even if he ultimately sides against him. If Xander should come to regret the actions he has taken, have him recognize his flaws and their consequences instead of "Everything is okay because I had a last minute epiphany about all the villainy I've been supporting". 

Azama: Keep the snarky troll with existential humor and tone down on him being a petty douchebag with zero empathy. Like Peri, a problem of his character is anyone actually tolerating him for more than 5 minutes.
 

Bonus - Celica
I don't hate Celica but like Xander, a good way of fixing her is fixing the villain of her story. If Jedah wasn't so transparently evil, Celica might seem rational in listening to his words. Also, just....completely re-write her fight with Alm. They really should have spent more time together and found their values conflicting over time rather than Celica shouting baseless accusations at Alm and storming off after their long awaited reunion. Hysterical is the only word I have for her.

Camilla: Focus more on her backstory! I like her backstory a ton and I wish they did more with it. Instead of having a porn like situation in male Corrin support have the support focused more about how the concubine war affected her. Oh and please a little bit less Corrin lovin, I only say a little bit because in a world where Camilla has good supports that focus a lot more on her issues, her obsession with Corrin is a good way to show the consequences of a traumatic experience like the concubine war.

Makalov: He could sacrifice himself to save his sister in RD and I still wouldn't care about him so you'd have to change his entire character a lot for me to like him.

Peri: Turn her into a villain who you can't recruit and give her a sad back story and I might care.

The Kids in Fates: Don't shoehorn them into the story so goddamn badly.

Rowan & Liana: Look, if you're going to have a pair of twins in a plot so blatantly similar to Sacred Stones, in a game filled with classic Fire Emblem characters, maybe... just maybe consider using the originals. Eirika and Ephraim may not have been my favorite lords. But at least then we'd have more game representation.

One day Est fell off her peg falling an undefined number of feet onto her neck while doing a stupid. Due to her innate absurd luck she survived this but was left paralyzed from the break down for life. Early in her disability Palla and Catria did their best to aid and comfort their now cripplegimped sister but Est's constant entitled scumming eventually alienated them leaving her alone, helpless, and forever unable to enjoy the freedom she once craved. At the end of it all regreting every moment of her life she chose to bite her own tounge and drown in blood rather than hear Palla bang Able one more damn time through the thin walls of their home.

Finding the corpse of their younger sister the elder whitewings knew they should feel greif, loss, rage, but all they knew was an odd sort of guilt-relief that it was finaly over.

A rewrite I would enjoy less (slightly more in line with the OP though) would be... any situation where Est fails and faces real consequences without the intervention of Deus ex Palla. Learns from them, and owns up to her past... everything.

Delete Peri and replace her with ... idk lets try Kjelle nvm we have Effie Gerome would've been cool as Xander's other retainer, and if not him then Cavalier Cynthia would've been easily as cool. I can't really think of a new character as a retainer for Xander so I'm just pitching out ideas for a character that already exists as Peri's substitute. As a matter of fact I'm also curious why only Severa, Owain, and Inigo were the only children who were appraised, credited and summoned by Anankos for helping to defeat the Fell Dragon. Lets delete Anankos too.

You mean like an actual Poll or something? If so, I'm not aware of it, but in terms of plot it doesn't make that much sense to me.

Yeah, it was the popularity poll. Inigo, Severa, Owain and Lucina were the top 4 most popular Awakening kids. Now obviously, Lucina couldn't be a retainer of one of the Fates royals but i'd like to imagine the scenario in which she was one. Actually, she could've been Elise's retainer, given how she's the only Nohrian royal whose retainers are both Fates originals.

Corrin - just completely write this character out of Fates and make Ryoma and Xander the lords. If Corrin must except, at least not as the main character.

Remove Ike from RD, or just majorly tone down his presence.

Contrary to what people may believe, I'm neutral to PoR Ike, I don't like him, but I don't despise him. I just wish he faced the consequences for mouthing off to Sanaki. It could've added some nice scenes, idk, the GM bust Ike out of jail or something. They could've done something with it.

 

Don't make Corrin an avatar, change female Corrin's voice, don't have them be the main character.

I'd improve Hans by giving more of a motive for his evil actions. Maybe he'll be redeemed by Corrin, and turn on Garon and Iago.

It would be hard to change Peri without just making her an entirely different character. So instead of changing Peri, i'd just change everyone else around her. So Xander did not recruit her because of her combat ability, but because he pities her and wants to help her. Meanwhile Xander and Corrin also keep Peri on a very tight leash with a no killing rule around so she does not casually talk about going to town and murdering someone. With those changes Peri would still be a batshit crazy character that should not be in the game, but at least she would't drag down everyone else with her anymore.

The problem with Peri isn’t that she’s a psychopath, it’s that Xander (Who despises Hans for his lack of humanity) and Corrin (Who dislikes killing people, and is portrayed as kind to the point of naivety) are fine with having her around. It’s blatantly OOC for the both of them, Maybe instead, Xander wants to help rehabilitate Peri, rather than enable her.

 

Or maybe make her a recruitable character like Shura in Birthright. After defeating her troops, you’re given the option of murdering her (and getting a reward) or recruiting her. Maybe Xander’s replacement retainer could be Charlotte instead. She’d definitely  wanna get close to the Prince.

Honestly for me all they would have to do is make garon the one to appoint peri as Xander’s retainer. It would make sense  given garon’s current state anyway.

Meg: Make her a pegasus knight. Seriously, her base stats and growths DO NOT BELONG ON AN ARMOR KNIGHT. But they would be perfect for a pegasus knight. Either that or change her base stats / growth rates to be more in line with her class, by giving her an actual defense / hp growth rate. She might turn into a solid tank for the DB

Fiona: Earlier join time, better base stats, and make her a soldier unit. She would make an excelent dodge tank soldier if she could actually get levels reliably and wasn't stuck in a class that was useless for 90% of part 1

SoV Clive: Slap an extra 15% on all his growths and he might be a solid unit.
