~~Prologue: Occupation!~~

4WPNSkS.jpg

Anchorage is a town that is in the awkward position of being right on the Eslonian borders, and therefore mostly out of the reach of Eslonian justice. There was only a small militia guard, and any attempts to reinforce the region were thwarted by more important internal or foreign struggles coming up. The Eslonian forces were stretched enough as is. The town itself was infamous for its shady behaviours, and it was a thriving place for thieves and mercenaries. However, since it was one of the main routes through from Eslon to Cabaria, there was still an amount of traffic passing through, though merchants and mercenaries alike would be wise to bring protection with them.

The inn was rather simple but clean, and that is mostly what travellers cared about. The innkeeper and most of the patrons rarely turned an eye to see exactly who was visiting. They didn't know, and they didn't want to know. And so, on the border of two nations that were increasingly hostile towards each other in recent times, is where we find our band of unlikely adventurers.

Outside the town...

1fHyiSC.gif"Owen, you are to occupy this town. Kill all that you need to. We'll be watching."

Zk0NfAN.gif"I suppose I don't have a choice in the matter, do I, General Arris?"

1fHyiSC.gif"Not unless you want to be thrown back into some thankless Cabarese prison. You were only saved because of your expertise as a mecenary leader."

1fHyiSC.gif"Don't forget that. Now get moving; perhaps if you can do this right, you may find yourself a decent spot in the Cabarese army. Fail, and you're a dead man."

Arris leaves.

Zk0NfAN.gif"Just usin' me as testing the waters, is it? Well, I guess I have to, anything is better than that damn prison. Troops, move out! Take everything you can!"

Zk0NfAN.gif"Hmm... maybe I can get some loot from 'ere, on the side. Besides, Arris said there shouldn't really be any resistance," mumbled Owen.

Back at the inn...

Those sitting in the inn quickly realize from the screams and shouts outside that their lives may be in danger, and so grab any equipment they may have and rush outside. They hardly had any time to think or look at who their new 'companions' were before they were faced with an enemy opposition that had already destroyed parts of the town and most likely already killed the town militia. The innkeeper and the rest of the patrons were too scared to move, and so would be useless.

//Ashok, Lenora, Aiolos, Calden, Helen, Sophia, and Kristoph can post now!

Ashok had been enjoying his break, and a drink at the local inn. His crew normally didn't come this far out into Eslonian territory, but this order was special, something higher up. He didn't know, all he was tasked with doing was bringing it along, and he didn't dare to look inside the cart for fear of losing his job. All that aside, he was near the entrance when the shouting began, and he quickly rushed outside to see if his crew and cart were fine. They had seen the oncoming fight and left as quickly as they could, leaving him there, though both he and they had wished they hadn't.

Coming out of the inn, soldiers and bandits were everywhere, tearing up houses and killing the villagers along with the surrounding militia. A few others had come out of the inn with him, and though he didn't know them, he figured they were his best chance for coming out of this alive.

qWyXv96.gif"Listen, everyone! I realize we're all strangers here, but if we stick together we should come out on top! Don't do anything reckless!"

He tried to sound brave, but his hands were shaking as he tightened the grip on his lance. He'd never had to fight a real battle, and it terrified him thoroughly. But living seemed easier to grasp through the fight, than through flight.

Ashok moves to (12,7) and attacks Mercenary A!

Just as he was about to scam some chump in the inn, the screams started. It was just his luck, he supposed. While he had intended to just run, it didn't seem like a likely option, as the enemy seemed to be all around them. There could even be more outside of the village. It didn't look like he had a choice, but to join with the others and fight his way out. Or, more likely, let them do most of the fighting, and fling a spell every time one of the attackers was too close to him.

Speaking of which, the nearby mercenary seemed to be uncomfortably close for Calden's tastes, so he decided to join the spear-man in taking him down.

Calden moves to (13,7) and attacks Mercenary A.

Anchorage had been a nice little town... somewhat peaceful if you weren't the one being mugged, and still then peaceful enough so long as you could protect yourself from your mugger. Lenora certainly didn't mind this town, and being out of the Cabarian lands and all of their elitist racism would normally be cause for glorious celebration. Of course, being so close to the border, and home to so many pickpockets and cut throats meant that when the invasion of Anchorage began, Lenora could only give a sigh and ready her sword... seems no matter where she went avoiding homicidal jackasses was nigh on impossible.

Still, it seemed a few others had also decided to stay near and not flee the area, and one such man had begun a quick speech on how they should work together and repel the incoming onslaught, not to do anything reckless... the standard affair of a man who felt someone should take leadership, but truly did not feel qualified in the least to take the role... her sly eyes noting the quivering of the man's lance despite his bravado.

"You guys seem to have this under control... I suppose I'll hit the East end of town, see if I can try and make their lives a little harder." Lenora noted to the gathered individuals... whether they felt they had something to gain from this as she did, protecting one's home from roaming banditry tended to loosen the pockets of those who needed saving, or perhaps even through sheer heroism, or at it's most basic, fear of death, becoming one of the fallen. It didn't particularly matter to Lenora... if they were willing to watch her back, she would do what she could to watch theirs... and besides, these brigands were no better than the horde of the South, moving as they wished and destroying all in their wake. Such selfish fools were despicable, she had decided... not that she was really one to talk, still, at the very least she limited her targets to those who had wealth to spare, and destruction was never on the agenda.

But now was no time for such musings. The closest brigand, and her intended target, had just finished ransacking a home on the East end, and slinking into some nearby trees, Lenora hoped to catch the man off guard, and if all went as planned, slit his throat without consequence.

Lenora moves to 16,6 and takes cover in the forest.

Kris hadn't planned on staying in this town for long, Anchorage just wasn't his style with how calm and peaceful it was, no jobs to be found. Just another stop on the map while trying to find the next merchant or caravan that could pay for some protection. Hell maybe there would be bandit problem nearby and he could just take care of it with a few other mercenaires and reap a nice reward for just a little bit of work. A vacation could certainly help him out a bit, take some time off from the normal back and forth of killing... maybe there was a nice beach somewhere...

Naturally of course, there couldn't be an actual moment of respite. Hearing the screams suddenly coming from outside the inn, it was fairly obvious the town was under attack, had to be bandits, but why wasn't the town guard taking care of them? Not liking the situation Kris strapped his sword and sheathe to his hip and followed the others that looked capable of combat outside. One guy with a lance was trying to act brave but a look at his hands pretty much said he was terrified.

Before doing anything else they needed to sweep the town for threats and take them out quickly. Following after the lancer and mage Kris took up a supporting position.

Kris moves to 13,6 and waits.

"Erm, that's not just some bandits, how the heck did things get this bad?" A confused Helen mentions, shifting her head and trying to get a better assessment of the chaos ruining a modest Anchorage. Anchorage's status as a struggling border town made mercenary job easier, and Helen was content with the profit she'd amassed, enough to make her way back home soon enough. Sadly, she was about to lose a fat part of her earn in a gamble that was going exceptionally awful, to the point she could swear the guy was conning her. Conveniently, the shouting outside was a perfect excuse to take arms and put the game on a 'hold' that she didn't intend to lift. Now she just needed to get out of the conflict alive...

Seeing a man stand up and try to raise the group's morale, Helen felt a bit better as the group that'd taken arms looked at least a bit experienced at combat, things shouldn't go too hard. She decided that if the soldier had the guts to volunteer leading, he'd probably be a tested soldier. "Fair enough, lead and I'll help."

Soon enough, as a duo went west to attack the swordsman, Helen figured it a perfect time to finish the job, then back away some to scout the area better. Hit and run tactics being always a good plan in her mind.

Helen moves to (13,8), attacks the Mercenary A (12,8), and then cantos to (15,6).

Sophia paused for a moment to get a better look at her surroundings. It looked as though several of the others from the inn had already joined the battle. Unfortunately, she was unarmed, barely trained, and unprepared, so the best thing she could do was to try to stay out of sight and get her horse ready in time to aid the others. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that.

Sophia stays where she is.

It looked like they were in for a brawl, and Aiolos didn't like the look of those enemies to the east. It would probably be best to get rid of them sooner rather than later.

"I'll go draw some enemies in, be ready to gank'em when they arrive."

Aiolos moves to 18,7.

Calden smirked to himself. That Mercenary hadn't lasted very long, and the others seemed to be a competent bunch, at least. On the other hand, it seemed like the enemies were beginning to notice them and move against them. There also seemed to be something going on from the south of the village, but the enemies were already right up close to him. Putting his faith in the others to cover his back (and his front, for that matter) Calden begins to cast another spell, taunting his target as he did so.

"I'd say I was sorry about your friend, but then I'd be lying."

Calden stays where he is and attacks Mercenary B.

The merc had fallen before him, and he cringed a bit, closing his eyes to the dying man. He knew it was going to happen eventually, lest it be him dead on the ground, so he'd steeled his stomach to not erupt out his mouth (though it took him aback so far that he couldn't even holler a thank you at the rider who'd helped him). It was only moments after that had happened that another man came at him, spear thrusting forward, nearly into his shoulder. Some form of luck had swarmed Ashok, and he twisted around it, before stabbing the man back. The man stumbled back a bit, giving Ash a moment to glance around. Everyone seemed fine; everyone that he could see, and it gave him a bit more confidence. He grasped his lance again, hands shaking considerably less, and tried to stab it into the man who'd just charged him.

Ashok attacks the solder right in front of him (11,7)!

It seems Lenora would need to rethink her plans a tad, as one of the others had drawn the Eastern archer over. As nice as the susceptible bandit that had played right into her hands, or even better, the clueless mage who had wandered a little too close... she didn't have a whole lot of cover over on this side of the battle, and would rather not lose what she did have.

"Hey, bud! We surround the archer and kill 'em, got it?" She noted to the axe wielder, as she dashed out from her cover, and before the bowman could react, had positioned herself behind him, sandwiching him between herself and the pirate.

"You picked a bad time to be alone~" Lenora sung towards the bowman, as she lunged at him.

Things went well in the west, from what it looked. At least, Helen could still brag at her combat's reliability, but the team seemed to not need her a lot this time, and picked a stance to hold their ground. Looking east, she could see two of the group went east to fight the enemies there, she figured it'd be more helpful if she lent them a hand, maybe they'd appreciate it. Of course, picking up on weakened targets was also awfully easy and hard to complain about. And so she ordered her pegasus to follow, taking a chance to charge at the overwhelmed archer. "Seems you're out of luck~"

Helen moves to (20,6), attacks the Archer C (20,7) and cantos further past him (22,6).
