"You're here to help too, right? The last one is over this way." She rode off into the building after healing the knight, as some of the others might have been injured.

Owen only grunted in response.

XB2S15Y.gif"Tara, tie this man up and give him proper healing treatment. I'm going to be questioning him."

kKCyIlc.gif "Sure thing, Captain."

Tara leaves.

XB2S15Y.gif"And to the rest of you: I imagine you are all quite rattled. Perhaps we can now make sense of this. "

XB2S15Y.gif"I'm Captain Daryl of the Eslonian army, and that was my lieutenent, Tara. Can I ask you all to introduce yourselves and the reason why you were present at Anchorage?"

XB2S15Y.gif"Perhaps after that, we can visit the inn and I can offer you all a... proposition."

Ashok sighed and leaned himself against a wall. This was the first fight he'd ever been in, and it had gone so well! He'd even managed to keep his cool and command some of the people here. He was going to keep quiet for a bit, but one of the people who'd joined them during the fight spoke up. Better now than later, Ash thought to himself.

"Sir!" Ash spoke up to the man, "my name is Ashok. I hail from a small town in Relia, doing ferry and delivery work. My fellow workers and I-- not these kind folk here --had managed to end up in town at the same time as the bandits had attacked, but I was present at the inn while they were most likely getting ready to leave at the stables. When I'd gone outside my friends were gone, and I was a part of the group of people who had also rushed outside. I didn't want to die, and I assume none of the others here did either. I did my best to take command; I'm used to giving and receiving orders, myself. I hope that's a satisfactory answer, sir."

He kept his tone polite, not wanting to cast any illusion on what he'd said; it was the truth, after all!

"Lenora... Lenora Herman. I was a survivor of the purge of Jotan... anyone not following Suyanna isn't welcome there, so I left. I didn't want to live in the damn desert, and Cabaria is hell if you aren't native, so I ended up here in Anchorage, hoping Eslon is liveable." Lenora replied, taking a seat on the now empty supply chest, twirling the javelin about absent-mindedly. Not that she could use the thing, surely she could find some use for it, perhaps pawn it off... she could decide the details later.

"And pretty much like he said... I fought because I didn't want to get robbed blind, and didn't want to die. I've come too damn far to get killed by a few brigands."

"Kristoph Jaeger, or just Kris if you prefer it. I'm a mercenary from Causil, just trying to move from place to place and find work, this was just supposed to be a stopping point while I was trying to find my next job, figured that some merchant or a caravan could always use another guard. Though after today I might try my hand at bandit extermination." Kris answered, leaning against the wall of the fort near the girl sitting on the treasure chest. Suppressing a groan as the green as grass lancer explained himself, the kid didn't really think he was in charge, did he?

"I don't feel like dying to some random bandits so no doubt I'm gonna fight against it, plus if I show enough skill that's just more of a chance I'll get hired by someone right?"

Gazing for a moment at Lenora spinning the lance he gave a comment "Nice weapon, should fetch a pretty penny if you sell that to a blacksmith or an armory."

"Nice weapon, should fetch a pretty penny if you sell that to a blacksmith or an armory."

This comment caught Ashok's ear, as he glanced at the lance being spun about. Perhaps I could put that to use.

"Excuse me, miss." Ashok started, "you wouldn't be willing to part with that, would you? I mean, I don't know if you're any good with them, but I know how to swing one around. I'm sure myself or the rider over there would greatly appreciate it. I'm... not sure I can offer any compensation, though. I doubt you'd accept an 'I owe you'?" He laughed a bit as he joked, though he would take her up on that if it was possible.

"Well I would certainly be willing to make talks for a deal... and no need for the formalities, Ashok. Call me Lenora." She replied, as she ceased spinning the lance about in some sort of whimsical fashion before she stabbed someone with it.

"But first, I want to hear this preposition of the Captain's... if it's anything like what I think it is, we may be fighting together a while longer. If that's the case, the only compensation I ask is watching my back and giving me pick of any nice swords you might find about before you rid yourself of them." Lenora concluded, giving the working man turned soldier a quick wink.

"Ahah, yes. Sorry, Lenora; bit of a habit." he stammered slightly, before regaining his composure. "But of course I could do that. I've no use of swords anyway, and I'm sure once we're done all of this I can get back to my company, if gold becomes an issue. As for watching your back, I'm here to help everyone, since we're all in this together now. You have my word!" He winked back at her, figuring it the right thing to do, and gratefully took the spear off her hands. "To you as well, Kris!" he added, not wanting to leave the man out, "I'll be glad to fight beside you, for however long we're in party."

This one seemed a bit green, but that wasn't such a bad thing. He had done well enough for himself during the fighting, and if the extra range of that thing allowed him to strike someone down before they got to her, it would be worth more than whatever paltry sum she could accrue for a standard make iron weapon.

"Then to our continued success, and hopefully lack of dying anytime in the near future... is what I would say, had we any drink to toast with. Well, sentiment and steel should suffice in this case." Lenora noted, holding out her sword, sheathed, towards the two men.

"I'm sure we can all have a drink at the inn once we've been informed of whatever's on the captain's mind. Though, yes, here's to us all." He held his lance out, much happier than earlier. Whatever the captain had planned, they could overcome it, surely.

The fight was over, Owen had yielded. Turned out how he couldn't fight a guy with an axe. With the appearance of Daryl, things certainly were getting interesting.

"I'm Aiolos, a seafarer or sorts. I made a stop here, didn't quite feel like dyin' so I joined the fight."

"I'd much rather have someone watch my back in a fight than put a lance in it, so what the hell, I'm in." Kristoph said to the other two, holding out his weapon alongside theirs. "Plus having a drink after a fight like that one doesn't sound too bad either."

After spending some time scouting and realizing people were still inside, Helen decided something was up and guided her pegasus into the building. "Incomiiing~ --wait, no! Watch out for the pill-- whoa! Bad pegasus, bad!" The pegasus knight shouted as the navigation went poorly and her mount's wing hit a pillar, compromising their balance and dropping them to the ground --thankfully, the mount fell on its feet. How did people manage to ride pegasi and wyverns in confined places anyway?

Well, it was no matter now, as Helen looked at the group, seeing a stranger being caught by one of the knightly duo that showed up, with the rest having their blades sheated and chitchatting. "Well, so I think that's a wrap. Nice work, everybody! What was that all about, anyways?"

As the party congratulated themselves, Daryl began to speak again.

XB2S15Y.gif"Indeed, all of your skill was quite impressive."

Daryl jumped in surprise as the pegasus "flew" into the building, then composed himself.

XB2S15Y.gif"Ah, I forgot about you. I was just saying that we should introduce ourselves, then I was going to offer you all a job. I'll pay for your good work here, at least."

Calden had kept quiet up until now, trying to figure out what to say. He didn't want anyone to catch onto his... less than savory way of making a living, if word had indeed spread from his previous places of residence. The others seemed like a rowdy bunch, but at least they weren't all talk. They could all hold their own... except for the moron who'd just crashed into a pillar. At the prospect of further payments fleeting, the felt the need to speak up, and hopefully distract the knight.

"I'm Calden. A travelling merchant... of sorts." Yeah. A merchant, definitely not a con man. He continued, "Truth be told, I wasn't sure that we'd make it through the fight. Either the enemies were led by a fool, or we're a more capable bunch than I thought." He glanced briefly at the fallen rider. "With one exception, it seems."

XB2S15Y.gif"Ah, I forgot about you. I was just saying that we should introduce ourselves, then I was going to offer you all a job. I'll pay for your good work here, at least."

"Ahn? A job proposition? Why, that's just what I needed!" Said the pegasus rider, trying to regain her composure after the 'small' pegasus incident. Giving a short glare to the merchant for his snarky comment before turning to the knight.

"My name is Helen... Helen Vatter, if it matters. Mercenary by trade from Causil. My last job had me escort a merchant to the mainland of Eslonia a while ago but... well, by an unfortunate twist of fate, I'd lost some of my funds. I've decided to stay and recover some before returning, and Anchorage looked just like the town that always sought more mercenary work. I was also in the inn at the time, and figured the commotion outside spelled danger, so I took action as well." Helen explained, no need to go on the details about her poor luck in recent gambles. She took arms to escape losing more money from one that looked pretty rigged, and was thankful for the current turn of events.

Sophia dismounted just as the other rider crashed through the building. She managed to calm her horse down quickly enough, but was still a bit rattled herself when the time came for her to introduce herself. "Sophia Hall. I'm also a traveling merchant. ...Or, rather, a former merchant." And considering the inn's prices, one without money. "Now I'm just a traveler, I guess. What kind of job is it?"

"Well met, Sophia and Helen!" Ashok said, his attention turned to the noise of the pegasus. "It's good to know the names of the people who saved me during that fight. Here's to more success." He turned his attention back to Daryl afterwards, sure that the man was going to tell them of his plans now.

XB2S15Y.gif"I'll tell you momentarily what the job is. But first, I need a place to sit down. Follow me."

Daryl lead the group to the inn, where the terrified patrons and innkeeper were beginning to calm down. After thanking the group profusely, he offered them the hospitality of the inn on behalf of Anchorage... or what was left of it.

Daryl gathered the group round a table and sat down.

XB2S15Y.gif"I would have to correct those of us that thought this was a regular bandit attack. It seems like Cabaria has finally declared war on Eslon. We were told by our scouts that the bulk of the Cabarese army would be here, at Anchorage... but that doesn't seem to be the case. Our own army is mostly stationed just west of the Gorian Mountains, currently."

His tone became more serious.

XB2S15Y.gif"I believe I don't have to tell you how catastrophic that could be if Cabaria manage to take Eslonian lands. I understand if you don't want to work for the Eslonian army, if you have ties elsewhere, but consider that all of Minelis could be under threat if this continues. Me and Tara were part of a scouting party to find out what was going on here, but it appears that these were simply mercenaries hired by Cabaria. I'll question Owen and find out what we should report back to the army."

XB2S15Y.gif"I was going to ask you if you wanted to join us. While I can't say that Eslonian equipment reaches this far out, our coffers certainly do, and you would be rewarded generously. Speaking of, you all did a good job back there."

Daryl reached into his pockets and pulled out a full money purse, and divided it up to give 400 gold to each of the party members!

XB2S15Y.gif"Maybe you'll be seeing more of this if you decide to take me up on my offer, yes?"

Tara enters!

kKCyIlc.gif "Captain, sir! He has been fully healed and is awake."

Daryl stood up, and looked back at the group.

XB2S15Y.gif"I'll be gone for a couple of hours, why don't you discuss this amongst yourselves?"

Daryl and Tara leave.

"War, huh?" Ashok said, as Daryl left. "That's...a lot larger than I'd expected. Still! I'm more than up for the task, at least for now. Who's with me?" It was a weird feeling to him, wanting to continue this campaign. It must of been his want to explore that kept him going, otherwise he'd have retreated back to his home in Relia. Surely at least Kris and Lenora would stick around, they seemed reliable back at the fort. He shook his head a little and donned a smile. There was no use thinking it over anymore.

Calden watches the man leave, before turning to the group. "You made up your mind that quickly?" he inquired to the lancer. He quickly returned to thought.

If they ended up all working together, he'd do well to stay on their good sides, else they may decide that he should be the one to hold the front line. But at the same time, the word "giving" wasn't really part of his vocabulary. He preferred taking. And after spotting the ring that the fool named Helen was holding, he had just the idea in mind to accomplish both goals.

"Where did you get that ring from?" he asks, choosing his words carefully. The knight didn't seem particularly pleased with his comment on her performance earlier on.

Allowing the bag of gold she had been handed to sit in her hands as she fingered it about, Lenora give a slight smile. This was certainly something she could get used to. Emptying the gold into her own coinpurse, she listened in to the other conversations about the inn. It seemed the mage, who had just concluded insulting the pegasus rider for crashing into the fort, was now trying to mooch that shiny little ring off of her finger. He would be someone to look out for, lest she find her own purse slashed and empty.

"Seems I was right, after all. Well, it's not surprising of the Cabarians to invade." Lenora noted, after the Captain had made his revelation.

"So what do all of you plan to do? Personally, I wouldn't mind stocking some coin in my pockets, and besides... I was treated like shit in Cabaria, might not be too bad to give 'em a taste back."

"Eeesh, I've heard about the current issues between Eslonia and Cabaria, but didn't expect full-scale war to be so close. Well, it fits a mercenary job, and I think this might even be the winning side! Besides, I'd like to think we've done a good combat as a group, I see no reason not to myself." Helen commented, pensative for a bit. The man did show how generous the Eslonians can be, and that might have sweetened the deal substantially.

Her attention turned to the snarky merchant, as he inquired about her ring. "Oh? Well, I found that in one of the abandoned houses during the battle. Seems a bit valuable, I think I could sell that for something." She wondered what he was about. If he was going to pay for it, then it was fine for her.

"I'd be glad to do a little work for ya... just holler when you need me."

The others seemed to have some sort of sense of kinship, To him, they were all strangers, Aiolos had only been with them because of circumstance. It probably wouldn't be a fantastic idea to get too chummy just yet.

"Hm... it is as I feared. I've heard tales of rings like this, crafted by wicked black magic users, who cursed the ring bearer to suffer a great misfortunes, until a new owner carries their burden for them. Was the house..." he paused, he could only spew so much bullshit before having to catch his breath. "ravaged, by any chance?" If he played his cards just right, maybe he'd be able to snatch the ring from her, and she'd be none the wiser she'd been scammed.
