  1. Well one catch is, Sakura had personally witnessed the death of several of her people in Conquest while Elise never saw any of that in Birthright since she mentioned that she was mostly in the palace upset at the sad turn of events. Also unlike Elise who has grown use to seeing battles (as she apparently knows how much of a battle-hungry person Camilla is), Sakura really takes no entertainment in seeing fights and only steps in once she has enough of it (or if it's her only other option). Seeing so many of your own people perish when they're defenseless after you are taken prisoner certainly won't help someone stay strong, certainly not someone who is emotionally frail like Sakura. Elise only wanted the war to end, she was willing to die for that cause even though Corrin/Kamui wished for her to stay out of the conflict.

I don't really play sweeper since lately my luck hasn't been that great considering how RNG has blessed the enemies hit rates since Chapter 10 of my Revelations Hard+ playthroughs. Spiked growths aren't bad when you can anticipate that enemies won't survive, but against anything close to a miniboss who can actually hit you, even stat growths are a blessing. You don't want < 40 HP and <20 Defense against most bosses past Chapter 12 in Revelations...I'm not going to dive further since I'm going to have to spoiler why. I'm mostly weaken and strike or stall and counterattack unless the chapter victory conditions states: Defeat Boss in x amount of turns or if you have to defeat certain enemies before something bad happens that results in a failure.

I like Tomes/Scrolls and Bows thanks to the buffs that they got but when you face enemies with Counter/Mirror Counter, getting pounded back by your own attack just doesn't make anything fun. My Ryoma almost KO'd himself against a Wolfssegner in my Birthright Hard/Classic run since I didn't notice the enemy had Counter equipped. I don't use gameplay viewpoints to view characters, I would rather go by personality comparison/contrast since it's easier to mention strong and weak points.

No matter which way you slice it, Sakura crumbled, Elise never did. You can say Sakura suffered more, but ultimately Elise gave her life for what she thought was right. Additionally, I prefer Elise's well-of-positively to Sakura's neutral-to-pessimistic one. Especially her voiced "oh gods, no..." line that she uses over and over again (thanks to weird voice-clip voice acting) is especially irritating. She's always on the verge of tears about everything - I just imagine Jakob's "stiff upper lip!" needs to be used on her all the time... Not the most enjoyable character, in my opinion.

Sweeper tactics might be risky, but I still love them - even on lunatic mode. Counter and magic counter don't come into play if you just outright kill people and I love the new attack stance options this game added gameplay-wise. More damage = more better! :3

But again (because I'm beating a dead horse) to each his own. Sakura really isn't a terrible character, I just have different tastes. >.>

  2. I actually really dislike Elise's role in Birthright because it's so blatantly emotionally manipulative and is just as moronic as Flora's role. She's really more of a tool than an actual character there.

Duuude - you know whose death I felt was purely for the shock value? >.>

Ryoma's cut-scene. Everyone else who dies has a "off screen" death or weirdly animated thing, but Ryoma's cut-scene is just up in your face for the shock...

  3. While personality-wise Elise does show more improvement and development, that's mostly due to her young nature. Sakura's meekness doesn't really do much harm but it does make it hard for her to speak with just about anyone not named Elise (who can easily talk with her). Also, Sakura's personality only flipped that hard after she witnesses Hans and other Nohrian soldiers kill helpless Hoshido civilians and when she sees that there's little to no hope left for Hoshido seeing how things have gone up until that point. She still had some hope but at that point it crumbled completely.

I'm not saying her moping and crumbling was unjustified - I just prefer a character who stands steadfast in the face of face of darkness. Sakura didn't. It's a mark against her (in my opinion - if it makes her more humanizing for others, it's all good) but I definitely like rooting for characters that never give up. Heck, even as Elise lay dying she still asked that everyone strive for peace - the conviction adds to her character in my book.

Gameplay-wise, the difference is barely visible. Sure Elise has high Magic, Skill, Luck and Speed growths but her HP and Defense growths are rather below-average which isn't very pleasing at times, think hit and run. Sakura has similar stats but you can easily get even stat spread as a War Priestess since it has relatively even growths then reclass into a support partner's secondary/primary class to readjust, Sakura can also tank slightly longer thanks to Renewal but this barely helps her as the game goes on. Also in a game where Bows and Tomes run rampant, Flyers might not live long when they can get crit-killed in one shot so both of them might not enjoy being aerial-flyers for long.

Perhaps it's because I play with sweeper tactics, but fast hard-hitters are the way I go. Elise is one of the fastest, hard-hittingest mage units (thanks to dark falcon access so early) and I use her to death in both Conquest and Revelations. Sakura is... not so much. It seems like (based on my leveling of her) they made her more "balanced" in terms of stat growths, and I definitely prefer spiked rather than equal across the board.

Lastly, I prefer magic over bows (thanks to the 1-2 inherent range). So, I still prefer Elise to Sakura, but I understand others might feel otherwise. (and again, I'm not saying Sakura is terrible, just not my cup of tea).

  4. Gameplay-wise: Elise. As a Dark Falcon she rips everyone a new a**hole. Her magic and speed growths are off the chart. Sakura seems destined for the yumi-wielding priestess class and as a dark falcon just wasn't on-par with Elise.

Story-wise: Elise. By far. She joins your side on Hoshido (shows conviction and character, trying to do the right thing) is very positive and outgoing, is always trying to be better at everything (as evidenced by several of her supports, including the Avatar's), has interesting character quirks (dying parts of her hair purple to match Camilla, so that they feel more like full sisters, etc.).

Sakura, on the other hand, seems to suffer from the "trying to be a stereotypical perfect Japanese woman syndrome" (more so in the Japanese version, as they've replaced a lot of her "quiet" with stuttering) but still. She keeps her head down until she gets frustrated and then just yells, on the Conquest path she gets defeated and then just mopes as a prisoner, doesn't have much conviction about anything, really, and I've never been a fan of "I'll just heal people because then we'll have a better world" attitude.

However, I don't think Sakura is terrible - a few of her supports are very enduring - but I super prefer people that have the strength of character that Elise displays (especially on the Hoshido side). And, to be honest, both characters could use more interactions and screen time without it all being about Corrin, but that's a different issue.

Overall, I definitely prefer Elise, by a wide margin.

  5. Hey, so, I know we can't buy skills FROM logbook units, but can we buy skills ONTO logbook units?

Like, in Revelations I have a logbook Yukimura since he's unavailable, so could I buy skills onto him or would I need to boot up Birthright?

Wait, you have a Yukimura in your logbook? >.> (Does he have some cool skills?)

Can I possibly go to your castle and recruit him, per chance?

  6. That's putting it mildly. Considering what happens, it's a shock that the cast doesn't talk more. In fact, no one TALKS in this game and especially Revelation. It's all exposition or "I believe in Corrin".

Seriously. I agree with this x100. >.> (Especially given all the world-breaking information that's dumped on everyone halfway through - you'd think they have some sort of opinion or shock or disbelief or... or... something to say about it all).

Game could have improved with about three times as much dialogue (in my crazy opinion) but maybe I just don't mind reading as much... <.<

  7. Do you like super-over-the-top happy endings? If yes, then you should definitely play Revelations.

Do you want a super solid narrative with compelling drive and clever plot twists? If yes, then maybe you should look elsewhere.

But, in all seriousness, if you enjoyed the gameplay of Conquest I would suggest you check out Revelations. Some of the maps are pretty fun, and it definitely plays differently than the other two routes. Additionally, having all the units is interesting (if not making everything infinity easier) but if you liked the characters at all in Conquest you'll probably find this amusing.

Lastly, if you can forgive Radiant Dawn's "curse to talk about stuff" then you can enjoy Revelations.

  8. I think a million people have already mentioned it, but I just want to throw my money in with them - the fox illusions were the worst. A one off gimmick that did nothing more than irritate (and it's not like your foxes get it). Boo to that map.

I liked Conquest 17 (the ninja tunnels) a lot. I know people don't tend to like this map, but I found the wall stuff fun (and ninjas very easy to kill with bows).

I also like Kana's and Asugi's children maps. The water in Kana's was interesting (wish more maps had that in it) and racing Asugi to the exit was interesting.

  9. Saizo. That guy looks like a fucking boss. Love it.

Yes. Totally agree with this guy. He wins the internet.

But seriously, Saizo aside (because he looks like he would straight up cut a b*tch), I really like Female Corrin's Nohr armor for Black Blood (or whatever the English name was...). Seriously hot as hell and badass looking all at the same time. Male looks cool too, just not as cool.

I like Xander with his god weapon when he strikes at range (black/red beam for the win) and anyone reclassed into Dread Fighter (but especially Niles - white hair + eye patch totally works for that class) because the animations and design for it were epic.

I also like the design of Dark Knights. I would say "especially Leo", but I can't actually remember how his horsey armor is different from generic class. It's just generally cool.

I also like Elise and her ponytails. Because... she's a precious cinnamon roll. I dunno - I got nothin'. >.>

  12. Blazing Sword has a tone? What kind? Even Fates has a "tone", but Blazing Sword is just the least interesting protagonists in the series going on a picnic or something.

    Whimsical adventure? xD

Seriously though - it felt more medieval fantasy than Fates. Did you see Azama? With lines like "Hey divine god; what's up?" or Jakob's "you just got served!" puts a more comical spin to the whole game than "where is my father, the marquess?" (ol' timey words everywhere for the win)

  13. Corrin: I don't know what I'd do without you, Xander.

Xander: You'll never have to find out, little prince.

(Except if you pick Hoshido, lolz)

But seriously. I like those sorts of lines (Niles and Xander) but I do realize the cheese factor is high. I practically get warm fuzzies and empathetic embarrassment at the same time reading them...

  14. MyCastle battles.

I go to "recently updated", pick someone with 400 power or below and then auto-battle on blitz with all animations turned off. Rinse and repeat. You'll have supports and visitation/battle points for all your rewards (which can be accessed on all re-plays and platyhroughs of your game).
