  1. Okay perhaps "blocking out" the year isn't quite the correct terminology. I was merely saying that due to my remembering the secondary as being older and crumbier. Trust me, I'm well aware of the accomplishments of the 2007 squad, of Tom Brady and all the other players involved. I think it's the greatest team ever. The '72 Dolphins had the 2nd easiest strength of schedule of ANY team in the Super Bowl era. That's a long time.

Maybe I'm just used to people who argue that no championship means the year didn't matter. Trust me when I say I'm privy to the insane offensive efficiency from that year.

I don't think I need to get over myself, guy. Maybe my original terminology wasn't correct but I don't take for granted the insane success of this team since Bill and Brady became a thing. I think Tom is the greatest QB of all-time. I'm not some numbnuts griping about past BS (though I'll admit most NYG fans can blow me)

  2. Asante Samuel was like 27 in that postseason. Hardly past his prime. His best years were on the Patriots.

Also, that was his fifth year in the league. He was always known as an aggressive corner who went for picks, and that's good enough when you have someone like Rodney Harrison behind you.

Lol I guess my memory of the secondary back then is pretty shitty, though not surprising given that I kinda block that year out for the most part.

Honestly Asante didn't even do that poorly in either SB, it was usually Ellis getting picked on at the end of games. Also Rodney really was never a cover guy at safety, just a big hitter

  3. One of my favorite characters from this game is Lucius. Sure, saying he's a glass cannon is actually understating how piss-poor his durability is, but with decent MAG+SPD growths, he becomes an offensive force quickly.

I also love his C staves upon promotion. This allows the player to promote him earlier than one would most units, and with his good growth in MAG he's a pretty good staff user.

  4. Chococoke: Asante Samuel, Ellis Hobbs, and Brandon Merriweather.

Samuel is a Hall of Very Good level corner. That team also has Wilfork, Bruschi, Seymour, Adalius Thomas, and Junior Seau. It was a pretty complete team, I believe the issue was that your best RB was gone by super bowl time (Sammy Morris was it?)

Asante was already past his prime at that point. He was a decent #1 corner but not a top corner, a la Ty Law or Revis. Ellis Hobbs was little more than average and Brandon Merriweather was one of Bill's worst draft picks (which is saying something.)

Sammy Morris was indeed injured, however he was nothing more than a typical big back with little speed and was basically a COP back for Maroney. Heck, there's a case to be made that Kevin Faulk was the best RB on the '07 squad. The Pats have had some pretty uninspiring backfields over the years...

  5. The 2007 Patriots were incredibly complete though. The primary issue with the 07 Patriots was that McDaniels thought a 7 step drop would work against that Giants DL, and you guys lost your run game to the IR before the playoffs.

Also, the LOB are good tacklers that can take away a lot of YAC, which is what Julian Edelman tends to thrive upon. I think they can neutralize any of those rhythm passes that intend to make the receiver get those yards after catching it in stride simply because of someone like Kam Chancellor. It's why Denver could get absolutely nothing done in the Super Bowl.

I donno if the run game was lost, the run game was just Lawrence Maroney, and he was always garbage. Can you name a Patriots DB from that team other than the helmet catch victim himself, Rodney Harrison? That defense wasn't capable of stopping anyone, that team was built on the offense out-gunning the opposition.

Edelman definitely loves his short catch YAC routes, but he's also a good intermediate route runner. I also think the offense will use 2 and 3 man route combinations on the right side of the formation. How did the Packers move the ball against the Seahawks before McCarthy decided to go into full-turtle mode? Quick passes down the seam and the middle of the field, AKA Tom Brady's favorite place to toss the rock

EDIT: I think I'll be able to get over my team not having an offensive player of the year if they take home the Lombardi tbh

  6. I mean, any offense can be beaten when you rush 4 and get pressure consistently. The thing about Patriots teams in the past is they were built around an offense that was meant to carry the team (and a secondary to allow teams to come back and win in dramatic fashion)

I honestly blame the AFC Championship game from 2006. Peyton rallied the Colts from 18 down in the 4th quarter for an insane 38-35 win. What happened after that? Bill decided that he would never be outgunned again, acquiring players like Wes Welker, Randy Moss, and Dante Stallworth and ignoring important defensive functions like a top cover corner or a decent pass rush.

What is the end result over the past 10 years? A team whose offense is capable of dominating most teams, yet falters when faced with a strong D-line or front 7, coupled with a defense starved of playmakers, incapable of making a stop when it counts the most ('06 AFC Championship, '07 SB, '11 SB, etc.)

Of course, that's why I really like this Patriots team. Defensively, there are obviously playmakers. Matt Patricia and Billy boy have done a great job mixing up their coverages and looks all season long, and that really will be the key to stopping the Seahawks' offense (along with stacking the box against Marshawn Lynch)

As for the flip side, the Legion of Boom is incredibly good at neutralizing taller receivers with their physical presence. The only WR who really fits that bill is Brandon LaFell. Though the Patriots have a ridiculously high number of offensive looks they employ, I expect Julian Edelman will be running routes primarily against Richard Sherman, who has shown that short, quicker WRs are the only kind he really has trouble with (even more so with one arm, I'd assume.)

  7. lol okay maybe I'm just a spiteful fan and read into that the wrong way, I certainly wasn't trying to spark any debate on religion; I just construed his statement as arrogance

Still sticking with my SB pick

EDIT: Also, trust a Pats fan: the NFL playoffs are an insane crapshoot. The Pats have lost at home as the top seed to teams such as the Jets, the Ravens, and were heavy, HEAVY favorites in both Super Bowls that they ended up losing. A hot QB is all you need to win it all once January starts

  8. I'm not attacking being religious itself; I just find it to be an incredibly arrogant statement. You mean to tell me you played worse than horse shit NOT by your own doing, but because it was all part of making some sort of miraculous, dramatic comeback? When any one of 4 different plays would have won the game for the Packers? That sort of absurdity pisses me off quite a bit

EDIT: Also, dondon, I feel that saying God is watching out for you and protecting you from a car crash is much, MUCH different than saying he made you play like shit so you could win in spectacular fashion

  9. I think the Seahawks window has just about closed and the Patriots might go back to like their 2011-ish state next year. I don't think they can keep up their secondary next year or even two years from now and the Ravens gave them a ridiculous scare, unless Belichick learns to draft well.

The issue is that Wilson's about to get a massive contract extension, and currently the Seahawks are looking like they're gonna be running on star power. Earl Thomas, Cliff Avril, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson, and Marshawn Lynch who may just be retiring. You can't coach low picked DBs to be good forever, you know. They may get to "making the playoffs and competing" like Ravens, Patriots, etc of the past decade, but that's just about it.

Patriots are going to lose Revis at some point and Browner is poor at coverage. Brady's also gotta go downhill some time.

Belichick has actually drafted a good portion of the defense in recent years. 1st round pick used on McCourty, traded up (in the first round of the SAME DRAFT) to select both Chandler Jones and Hightower, Collins was taken in the 2nd round that next pick. Kyle Arrington was also a draft pick from further back, and he's been competing extremely well in the slot the past few years (this year especially.) Revis and Browner are 2 out of maybe 3 starters on the defense that Bill didn't draft.

WRT Revis, I think he stays in New England, especially if he wins the Super Bowl in 2 weeks. Tom Brady restructured his contract to free up some insane amount of money (upwards of $20 mil, I believe) which will be spent wisely on players like Revis and McCourty this offseason. Bill has been tight with the wallet in the past, but he is quick to recognize that money is well-spent on defensive playmakers.

Also I'm picking the Patriots in SB49 ;)

EDIT: Anyone see what Russell Wilson said about his 4 INTs? He claimed it was God's work to make the ending of the game that much more dramatic and special. Holy fuck I hope the Patriots shit on this team and especially golden boy Russ

  10. Pats over Colts next weekend. I can't see a way the Colts defense can make enough stops without Luck playing out of his mind (which hasn't happened against NE in his career but then again, there's a first for everything...)

SEA vs NE on February 1st

EDIT: We won't find out until this week but the health of Bryan Stork's knee is the biggest decider of how well this team plays the rest of the way

  11. I have to say, Ana, reading your musings about the Steelers is very interesting to me. I know for a fact if the Pats lose next Saturday I won't get even the most minuscule amount of joy from any Patriots winning awards.

Also, the last time the Steelers played the Patriots they gave up 55 points sooooo not quite sure which game you're referring to.

Also show me a QB who doesn't play like shit when consistently pressured and I'll show you a male cow

  12. The thing about the Patriots' receiving options is that they all complement each other well. Gronk obviously requires a double team or coverage shift of some sort. This opens up holes for the rest of the receivers; Edelman does his damage underneath and in intermediate routes; LaFell can go deep or run quick patterns. Tim Wright could feasibly step up since he'll be single covered most of the game. And finally, Vereen out of the backfield is a legitimate threat as well.

Again, though, none of this matters if Baltimore gets consistent interior pressure. If things start getting out of hand I expect to see an extra eligible O-Lineman in to give Brady more time.

  13. How is your pass blocking back? How's your interior? How have they fared with 3-4 Ds? What about 4-3 looks? Do you think our secondary has improved enough to take on LaFell, Edelman, and Tymes? Do you think Hill can mitigate Gronk a little bit?

I'm very cautious in this game because our run game could do well against your run D but it feels like we both SHOULD be an even matchup but I can't help but feel we are outmatched as a whole. Here's hoping your struggles as of late weren't too different to the Steelers'.

EDIT: When I asked about pass blocking I was actually asking how good your RB was in pass blocking and receiving, because the receiving part is what the Steelers lost from Bell. Bell wouldn't run against us and Bell's pass blocking was about on par with Harris' (better but not that much).

Shane Vereen is the passing back. He's a pretty effective pass catcher and it also above average when it comes to pass pro. That being said, he's been a bit underwhelming this year when utilized more than little.

The interior of our O-line will be the biggest key of the game. When healthy, they've blocked decently well, certainly well enough to allow Brady time and comfort in the pocket. When even 1 of the lineman is injured, shit hits the fan hard. There is absolutely no interior depth on this time currently.

I don't know if Baltimore's secondary can contend with the receiving options Brady has. Tymes probably won't see many snaps, but I expect Edelman, LaFell, Gronk, and Tim Wright as well to cause problems all over the field (assuming the Ravens aren't pressuring Brady on every dropback)
