One thing I don't think has been mentioned is that the game's combat is a lot better for foot units than in most other games. For one, enemy quality and density is pretty high. While high-range units such as Dracoknights and Paladins still tend to be invaluable units, this isn't a game where you can count on them to tank through the opposing forces all by themselves (partly because everyone and their mother has arrows / horseslayers). As such they actually need backup from your higher-damage-output Heroes, Warriors, and Sages in order to kill enough to survive enemy phase.

and of course the writing is absolutely top-notch best in the series hands down

I agree.  My first experiences with Fire Emblem were Radiant dawn and shadow dragon, so I didn't understand all the praise that Horse units were getting.  Warp and forging is OP, and I like being able to use OP resources to make less OP units even more OP.    And you are quite right about the writing.   It may be the best in the series. Half the lines are quotable, and most of what marth says in regards to what needs to be done can never be more down to earth; he's got a job to do, and he's going to do it or die trying.

(He obviously won't die, because you have Forged Rapiers at your side)

i mean, if we're going by the silly NES translation where he says "What! That's mean, Celica." it's more like

"Alm, do you think we can win without fighting Rigel?"

"nah girl look our your fucking window rudolf's gonna fucking kill us"

"I don't think Rudolf's as bad as everyone says. Sure, he's invaded our country while we're already weakened, but he'll definitely listen to us.

Or do you like how everyone's treating you like a hero????? are you just doing this so you can be KING, alm????/"

"What! That's mean, Celica. I just want to help our country. plus i heard the princess is still alive so I've gotta find her but i'll go home after that"

"THERE IS NO PRINCESS IDIOT THE ROYAL FAMILY IS FUCKING DEAD. YOU GO TO RIGEL IF YOU WANT BUT WE'RE GOING TO THE TEMPLE TO FIX THINGS WITHOUT PEOPLE DYING BYE"

i'm glad they're making it seem less like celica being an unreasonable asshole and alm ignoring the fact that a ton of people will probably die because of what he and his buddies are doing

Is this an accurate translation?  I'm getting confused, and I can't read Japanese.

I think releasing FE4 in the west would cause so much controversy that it would get censored beyond recognition and overall ruined. I have no faith in Int Sys after Fates to embark on a project as big and risky as this, unless we can persuade them to ditch localisation entirely and steal the text from existing fan translations.

This is the greatest challenge with a Localized, Western Rated Geneology Remake.

I'm not familiar with how exactly rating work with the ESRB and other rating systems, but Geneology possesses many mature themes that, while non-graphic, are still very touchy.  So much so that if it were to be translated unlocalized or uncensored, it might need a T15+ or M rating.  Child hunting and Incest didn't stop IS in Fates Revelations (minus the child hunting) however, the incest is more direct and less acceptable than distant cousin incest.  We're talking brother-sister "roofies night in the moonlight" incest. On top of that, the child hunting is prevalent (not like thracia, but still), as well as murderous schemes, dark colts like Loptyr, and even children under the "spell" of the Lopto.

The dark, yet impactful themes of geneology are incredibly off-putting to some audiences and might even put Nintendo's western brand recognition at risk.  If someone thought that Pokemon Go was trying to take out churches, then Geneology is going to be even worse by those standards.  The problem is that Geneology's themes are so intertwined with the story that changing any of it to fit some audience comfort ruins the story, and takes away a story that was so great and well loved.  Take the themes out/alter them and the story to put the game on shelves with a safe teen rating, or make it an M rating that could possibly jeopardize Nintendo's brand, and further, it's stock.

The safest bet for anyone is to see how well Echoes does, market a safer, binding blade remake, THEN if both sell well,  they'll try their hand at geneology.  Right now, It's too risky for IS or Nintendo to remake Geneology, despite it's stellar Child Mechanics.

    what

...   Are you guys sure you understand Holy Blood and growth inheritance?  Because... With Lewyn/Levin's speed growth, and (if promoted) his average stats passed down will at least give a small res boost to any of his sons.  His growths will make for killer children.  Yes, the Special tome of Lewyn's is a game breaker and amazing help in the second generation, but it's not like it's needed.  It's hard, yes, but as long as you have other units, Julia, Selpih, and a few others the game throws at you, you don't need to have Lewyn marry Tiltyu, Sylvia, or Erin/Fury.

  5. This is a tough choice, but not that tough.  It was Pegasi for me, and it really didn't feel that hard of a choice.  There are fantastic Wyverns in the franchise, like Milady, Minerva, Dean (although he sucks indoors so dean is lower on the list for me) Haar and Jill, to name the top contenders.  But for me, Pegasi were just... more interesting creatures.  When mythical creatures pop into my head, the only thing that comes to mind are unicorns, werewolves, and Big-Foot.  Wyverns seem like a type of reptile that... just flies.  A pegesus is a creature that, like a unicorn, is majestic, and not neccesarily trained for battle.

But they are, in FE standards, very loyal, worthwhile companions (See Minerva's and Catria's support conversations from New Mystery) that are also things of beauty.  Wyvern riders are strong, sure, but they come in so late or enemy side (or the bad country) only so much throughout most of the games that it feels like you have that one outsider on your team.  I either have a Pegasus trained, or it's one of the big 5.  There's just something about pegasi that is appealing.  Having companions for assisting you in battle rather than them doing half the fighting seems really interesting, and feels like that the people riding them are much stronger as a result.  Even if, obviously, pegasus riders are less powerful in gameplay.

I think it will depend on the sales of SoV, Warriors and FE16. If they sell well (and SoV is getting a lot of promotion so it likely will), I'm sure Genealogy will be next up. Genealogy has two generations so it's hard to imagine IS passing up on that popular feature.

What about FE 6?  If heroes is any indication, they seem to be pushing the characters of Binding blade more than FE 4.  Maybe sometime in the future, we'll get a geneology remake or remaster if SoV does well, but I'm not sure it will be as soon as people expect.

  7. With the vast abundance of characters from the Zelda series in Hyrule Warriors, I'd say that this wishlist isn't far off from what Koei techmo might do, along with Team Ninja's love of tits and fan service out the wazoo.  It's fake, but still not entirely horrible as a thought.  Tharja was a mistake, and will always be one of the worst FE characters, in my opinion.  But the Grand Battle Mode could be... interesting.

  8. How much speed does Seliph get upon promo again? 3?  I remember the tyrfing gives him 10 speed, so there's that.  Like others said, if you really need him to patch it up there's a speed ring you hopefully passed down to the second generation.

his leak won't affect sales at all and will keep building hype.

Your points are valid, and to everyone else who replied, I understand that the sales will only be affected in minor ways.  But it will be effected regardless, in some way. Whether it be people who actually somehow play it (which I understand is very unlikely and few in number) or people who see their concerns and questions answered, or spoil themselves of anything but the story may cause certain people to decide not to buy the game.

The leak may not be that big of an issue, but considering that more leaks lead to even more leaks of separate games and franchises in the future, I don't think that the leak itself is a good thing at all.

I was harsh in calling the leaker a "Japanese idiot", but at the time  of posting the topic, I was quite unhappy.   That doesn't justify my own actions, but I stand by what I said about this being bad overall.  Not a major calamity, but even a little worrying, in my eyes.

  10. I like it.  It's great that the game punishes you for doing things wrong or slipping up.  Every war is brutal, and no war has no casualties.  The fact that the game's endings change based on who's alive makes you feel like the world was impacted.  Yes, the supports don't change many endings, but the fact that death was such an important part of the franchise, and it only effected who you got to use in battle was stale, and dull.  There was little meaning to death outside of gameplay.  This was my favorite thing about Gaiden.  The deaths had weight.  The lives of who you trained in battle mattered.

It wasn't just, "Oh, I don't get to use Robin anymore, LOL he sucks anyway".  It was, "Oh sh*t, he's actually dead. And the other characters feel that death taking it's toll."  I'm staggered that this was only used in gaiden.  It meant so much that people survive the war.  In real life, people die, and they f*cking die.  You can't escape grief.  Putting that emotion in a game and having the endings effected based on how well you played was genius for its time, and I'm happy that it's here.  Also, F*ck faye.  She was a shitty Catria Archetype anyway.  I'm going to not recruit her with Alm just for the hell of it.

  11. So, by now, many of you know about the leaked information of the Upcoming title, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.  Or should I say, the entire game was leaked.  For Data miners and those who run this site, that's basically gold and worthwhile information.  But for the franchise, the sales of this upcoming title, and the possibility of more "Echoes" style remakes, I believe this is a disaster.  The entire game was Leaked, and people can play the entire JP version of the game before even one copy is sold.  This act of leaking the entire game will definitely impact the market of this game in some way.  A BAD way.

Let me put the financial situation like this: The law of demand states that when the price of something decreases, demand will increase.  When the price increases, demand will decrease.  But this law is thrown out the window when the black/grey market comes into play.  I mean, ROMs, leaks, that sort of stuff.  When that is put out for the world to see before there is even a chance for the demand to rise or fall in accordance with the price, (not counting pre-orders) demand suffers.  People will no longer pay money to get what they want.  People who cannot afford the game or who simply don't want to wait or pay, can screw over any regard for the people who want to pay for it, and get it free.  This effects more than the sales.  This effects the equality of the experience.  This answers questions that would usually be left to the player to answer with his/her playthrough of a game - but with no real incentive to buy it or find out through a purchased copy, this means that there is no mystery or wonder to the game's presentation.  There is little joy in playing a game where you know everything about it.  Why do people avoid spoilers?  This also effects future remakes, like FE 4 or 6 remake that I know you and I are wanting.  Based on what, you ask?  The sales.

Believe it or not, lots of things depend on people buying the game, and it's a damn shame that some Japanese idiot leaked the entire game before it could be sold.  Before any transactions could be completed.  You think that those pre-orders have costs put in just when you order them?  Nope. The company doesn't even get the money until the game is shipped/brought to you.  Then it's a sale.   This leak, and those who download/endorse this behavior for future releases of other games (not just FE) is a giant Middle finger to the developers who worked on this game, as well as the people who saved up money and put in effort to buy this game.  To finally get it on release day.  It's unfair, unjust, illegal, and worst of all, hypocritical for those who download it.  Do you support this franchise or not!? I'm saying all this because I feel like I'm the only person concerned.

Mangs made a good portion of one of his videos addressing this:

    Spoiler

All in all, that was the nicest way I could put all my thoughts together without spouting anger and slurs into the faces of anyone who reads this.  I'm REALLY ANGRY, and definitely still buying this game.  I get that some people can't afford it.  That's where the grey market is.  But for those who download it for the game because you JUST CAN'T WAIT, can you be anymore disrespectful?

The way that hypocrisy works is like this: you say you hate the way something is or how something is done, and you turn around and do or aid in what you said you hate.  But does hypocracy work that way in something you love?

  12. Mage Atlas has always been my go to for him If I want to use him.  (I've only used him twice)  Since Magic has fixed hitrates, and his attack will be naturally high, All he needs is a strong shield like the dragon shield to make him a tank that deals obcene magic damage. Alternatively, the speed ring can be used to make him faster.  (Then there's the speed from the Milla shrines if you REALLY want to make him Sanic Material)  25% is bad, but It's not abysmal either.  As long as you know how to position people in battle, you should be able to make Mage Atlas work well.  I have.

Really?  You don't know?  WARNING. SPOILERS.

    Spoiler

She can pass the Armor Slayer down to Leif in the second generation.  As long as the mage is killed with Fin and Nana/Janne, Leif can tear through the Armorknights with some simple avoid bonuses.

The light sword is worse because Leif and Magic don't mix.

I prefer to keep the brave sword on Ayra or Sigurd or give it to someone else who can make use of it in the rest of Gen 1, and pass it down to the kids in chapter 6, for early use.

I know that preistesses get access to swords, but do non-Celica mages get a special skill since the princess was basically a third tier female mage, but accessible by Celica only. Or is the sword the only bonus that they get?

No.  Really you only had the spells that each character learned differently to make them different from other spell-casters.  For example, Mae learned aura around level 9, but Sonia never learned it.

  15. I personally don't like the higher growths.  Low growths made the original have it's charm, and promoting was unique and interesting.  Instead of set class increases, they were dependant on the lower stats being adjusted, and ment that waiting to promote and grinding a lot was possible, but punishable.  Now they put in fatigue to fix the grinding abuse, but the promotion system is near useless with the higher growths.  I would have been fine with simpler buffs, like 5% to 15% in some stats that made a character unique, but I feel they improved the growths too much.

It's a decent change, overall.  However, I feel that with these high growths, people will be punished upon promotion nomatter what you do.  Unless someone is RNG screwed, of course.  Here's hoping everyone gets RNG screwed.

  16. Just now, Something Witty said:

I think that's pretty cool, but whatt about female mages? Do they get some type of skill that helps them since they can't promote

Female mages got access to swords upon promotion, basically changing to Celica's class.  Celica's promotion gave her 0 stat increases but opened her up to get more levels, so she was really the only unit in Gaiden you needed to get to level 15 or higher before promoting.

  17. I don't think this is an issue.  In the original Gaiden, any class that had only 1st and 2nd teirs had some special ability in battle that gave them an advantage over teir 3 units.

Falcon Knights dealt effective damage to monsters.  The remake has apparently changed this to just 10 extra damage.

Saints, or promoted Clerics, healed 5 HP to all adjacent allies at the start of each turn, much like with items like the Holy ring.  This stacked with rings and other HP regeneration items making them like the healing Jars from Chapter 1-4 from Radiant dawn.

Sages healed 5 HP to themselves each turn, likely to balance out the amount of HP they lose with spell-casting.

Preistesses gained access to swords at melee range, and is akin to Celica's starting class.

I don't know how the Saints and Sages had their class abilities altered, if at all, but this made the classes more balanced.  Or... that was the Idea.  Falcon knights were OP in the original.....  I dunno how much more useful they'll be here, but we'll just have to wait and see.

  18. 1 hour ago, Iridium said:

It's a spell unique to Cleric Faye, but yes.

Also, since you mention Stamina, it's worth pointing out that Valbar -- as far as we can tell -- has the highest Stamina in the game.

Wait... so stamina is a stat now?  Like, there's an amount units can exhaust?  I thought it was just indicated by the smily faces.

And is it Stamina or Fatigue?  I'll get confused soon if I don't learn now.

  19. General advice.

1 - Don't neglect the arena.  People don't die from it, and it's like your saving grace for money and extra exp.

2 - Rush with cavalry.  If you ask yourself, "Should I just go over there with sigurd and rush in guns blazing?"  The answer is almost always YES.

3 - Keep an eye out for conversations and talk events.  These can give you special items, give certain characters stat boosts, and importantly, Make Fin and Raquesis amazing.

4 - Promote when you hit level 20.  Don't wait.

5 - You don't need to use everyone if you don't want to - there are plenty of opportunities for other playthroughs to use other units.  I do recommend however, for your first run through, Have Lewyn (a mage/bard you get later) marry anyone.  Doesn't matter who at this point.  Anyone.  Remember that while optimal pairings are great and make the game a cake walk (Like Lewyn X Tailate, Arden X Aideen, and Dew X Ayra) the real thing to keep in mind is put together the team you want and have fun with it.

6 - Give Ethlin an Armor Slayer (Cutter in the old translation patch) and never take it off of her.  Trust me.

  20. I'm surprised no one chose "They'll be great classes you want to pick" because in echoes there's Fatigue.  And you know what that means?  It means you have to use your Armorknights/Barons!  Anyone who thinks they are crap in echoes or in the original are either lying to you, haven't played the original, or are just plain ignorant of their usefulness.  You know how many times Valbo/Valbar saved My hide in Celica's side?  How godly Force was on the front lines?  How valuable Barons/Generals are to you in Gaiden/Presumably echoes?

They are fantastic, with the only weaknesses being Resistance and movement.  With items like the Dragon shield, magic shield, Angel ring, and speed ring the resistance problem is slightly more managable.  Plus, as Iridium stated, Warp, physic and (is again in Echoes?) fortify will help keep tabs on your knights wherever they are.  Which is likely the front lines and choke points, making Physical tanks more important here then they have ever been in most FE games.  Defense and HP were by far some of the most important stats in Gaiden due to how damage worked, and any unit was likely to be swarmed from multiple angles.  Having high Defense made it so minimal damge was received (even if you were doubled), and there were few moments in the game where witches and other magic units were in such variety where you were in constant threat to losing your knights and barons.    Speed is good, but defense made the world go round.

Don't undervalue the Barons or Knights.

  21. 1 hour ago, Interdimensional Observer said:

Or if they increased the bases and growths of most characters?

Looks like someone didn't use the White wings or Wolf or Sedgar.  :P

Really though, I get what you're saying.  They could have done more to improve upon the overall variety as far as enemies, and maybe the characters.  One thing I will never forget about the game though, is how even though every character was forgettable, those who had lines had a place in the world, and you knew why they were there, and what they believed their roles were.  I think that's something the newer games could learn from in a way.  SD is not perfect, but it wasn't all bad.

That's good.  I was afraid that I'd activate a skill that I didn't want to activate.  I wonder if skills of weapons will show up on enemies as well.
