Staves are very important in FE5 because they took a huge buff. In a few chapters stave chains are required to have a much easier time. Tina is a must have when you get her.

Really?  because I'm on chapter 16 A and I'm wondering if she's worth it when I already have 3 staff users aside from Sara (who I'm definitely using) and The Lopto guy who's name escapes me.  He has red hair, is a dark magic user

  2. I haven't completed my first run of Thracia yet, but here's who I'm using (miniamal scroll abuse):

Lara (theif fighter -> Dancer), Lifis, Asvel, Fred, Fergus, Fin/Finn, Othin, Sometimes Havan, Ronan with the Neir+Hezul scrolls, Olwen, Safy, Shiva (more for Arena money than anything else), Ronan, Dean, Karin, Nana, and Mareeta.   Units like Selfina, Dagda, Carion, and Pann are really here to serve as replacements for others that get fatigued, or fill a certain niche that I need for a map or two.  Mostly, I'd recomend Carion, Lara, Ronan, Olwen, and  as units that you give scrolls to to make use out of Early on, because otherwise they might fall behind, even with good promo gains.  Another thing to look for is leadership stars, and using the right scrolls on the right units.  It's easy to abuse the scrolls, but I'd only recomend doing that on someone like Lara, Lifis, Marty, or Hicks, who are crap without them.

But I'm not here to tell you how to play; you said that you've played thracia before, so it shouldn't be too hard for you.

  3. I like the base shopping, but I'd have to go with how FE 11 and normal mode FE 6 did things. You might be able to buy the normal stuff, but the shops and anrmories around the world in different maps made the world feel more alive and thriving with business.  Plus you still had to manage your items and inventory based on what you needed, and you couldn't just go back and grab the nosferatu tome or killing edge that you needed from 5000 kilometers away.  You had to make due with the funds you had.  and Shadow Dragon gave you enough money so you could still buy as much as you needed.

In fact, the game gave you so much money, you could survive battles and beat the game using only items that are on recruitable characters, drops, chests, and story rewards.  The rest of the gold could go into forging the weapons you get or buying staves.  Staves were something you REALLY needed to buy.

RD and PoR were nice with their shopping, too.

Sakura bloom in the Spring and share a name with Sakura who was named after sakura.  She also deserves to have a custom theme even if the rumors of it being temporary are true.  Any more questions?

Uhh, no.  No questions.  None at all.  Thanks for clearing that up, just me being selfish.  My apologies.

  5. There's only one thing I find odd about it. Sakura.  Why her? I'd find it better to have Kempf take over.  ...Simply because he led his own charge on the forest because of a misspelling of his name.  I don't like April Fools.

Playing this game right now through H1 and I can safely say that this is one of my favorite FE games from a gameplay perspective for a variety of reasons.

-Conversations that specific characters can have after recruitment: Most of these are consistently good unlike the support conversations of the last few fire emblem games, which are mostly hit or miss

There are plenty of other things that I haven't mentioned that I really like about the game.

    Glad you're enjoying it.

With Shadows of Valentia coming out, I'm really liking the idea of Celica's peace loving nature but finding the idea of Alm's aggressiveness insufferable. The main reason why I like Sanaki so much is because she cusses Ike out. I hate Arthur's patriotism and sense of justice, I hate Cordelia's obsession with Chrom but totally ok with Tharja and Camilla and I find Serra amusing.

So... you think an agressive protagonist who is a young, eager, battle hungry, inexperienced knucklehead like Alm is "insufferable" compared to Celica, who displays an opposite personality and varying goals? That's kinda the point.  The point is to have these characters progress and become more of a person over time, and if they are insufferable, let them be.  See if they change, and become better than their former selves.   A character can only be so much starting out.  The kind of person they are, their backgrounds, what environments they are exposed to, and even their genes (family traits or royal expectations based on heritage) play a role in who they are, what they set out to achieve, and how they do this.  Celica takes the more calm approach of finding why crops are failing, while alm takes the battle to the front of the empire, a brash and dangerous, but richous cause that someone had to put into motion.  If alm didn't start something, who would have?  The resistance force, based on what we know, probably would have failed if alm hadn't stepped up.  He takes action.

What I'm trying to say here is that characters have traits and personalities that shape their actions throughout a story.  if these actions make them more believable of a character, then they are done well.  But give them a chance.  Don't write off characters because of simple traits that simplify how they start out.  See if they grow based on those traits, and then try to develop an opinion for that.  If what you like are memorable characters, then wouldn't alm be someone you like?  His traits, you may not like, but you can certainly remember him - he stands out from a bunch of the other lords with his attitude alone.

As for other character traits, if they are one-note, and are focused on too much, they can ruin the potential a character has to develop.  Having too many of them makes an entire cast sink to the bottom of a life-deprived ocean, awash in garbage and dead tropes.  No one wants that.  No one wants a dead cast, or even worse, a cast that feels dead, because their defining features run stale.  Give me some variety in character traits.  Instead of one gimmick, give me three or four.  I'd like to have characters that have back stories and likes and dislikes of their own.

Motivations, goals, interests, dreams.  These things make up interesting and thought provoking characters that reel in the theme of the story more-so than the main story itself could, in my opinion.  It's ok to have two or three gimmicky characters who play for laughs, or who have some sort of distortion of reality, there are real people who mess around, and are just good fun to be around - having a few characters who represent fun is nothing to do away with.  But having too many make the world feel empty, and the story's message falls flat when the characters aren't even in the world that is struggling to survive with only the protagonist to hold everything in place.  That's what Fates and (almost) awakening felt like to me, and I'd like this to be improved upon in future FE games.

By contrast, FE 6 had some bland, and non-memorable characters, but at least in their supports they tried to resolve some problem or issue they had with the world around them or with one another.  Take Zealot and Juno's supports.  They try to discuss how they are feeling and about the future of Illia as a country.  It's not the most practical support, or even the most interesting.  But it feels like they respond to the problems of the world and are breathing, living people who I can care about if they die.  These goals, aspirations, and resolutions die with them.  With each character that dies in FE 6, for me at least, a resolution to some problem also dies.  In Fates?  meh.  Some guy with bad luck or a bloodthirsty maniac died, and I don't care if they die, because that's all that dies.  There are some exceptions, but that's how it is for me.  Give me a reason other than the character themself to keep them around, and I'll say, "now there's a successful side cast."

  8. Kliff: Mage.  He's the best villager.  Maybe (Fayebe) his sister will do well in that regard also.  (But I wouldn't count on it)

Robin/Tobin: Archer?  PFFFT!  You guys....  Are you really going with that old Shtick?  Sure, he's great as an archer.... but Mercenary is where he really shines.  Speed is all that matters.

Grey:  Just to make things even, He's gonna be an Archer.  Has more strength than Robin, and you don't need to have skill when the holy bow lies within the fear shrine.  Well, once alm Promotes Any archer on Alm's side will be outclassed, but hey, why not?

Fayeliur: She's gonna be a pegesus knight.  Sadly, you probably can't recruit Clive with Celica like in the original (it was just too funny to not do) so Extra Falcon knights on Alm's side will make it almost like you have Palla and Catria light.  Except not.  No one is better than Palla and/or Catria, so....  Sucks to be you Faye.  You garbage Alm stalker.

Atlas:  His redesign makes him look like he's a God.  Probably holding the world in place with those swole Muscles.  Mr. Universe?  With those pecs, he'll be Mr. Multiverse!  (I'll stop)  So, I'm making him a mage, despite my love for Boey.  Why?  Hit rates are based on magic spell hitrates, so skill isn't worth sh*t on him.  Speed and Defense can be fixed if the Quick Ring or Dragon Sheild are still in the game.  So with his sick magic stat, He'll be a force to be reckoned with.

I wonder if Traders are still a thing.  Hope they give us their boots.

. Echoes a remake or re-imaging of a old game so they probably wanted to keep the maps the same or they were just Lazy.

I actually think that Gaiden's maps fit it's archaic mechanics well enough to be a decent and engaging game at times.   Map design?  If people can deal with Chapter 3 from Fire Emblem 12 (Mangs couldn't)  Then people can handle Gaiden's map design.

  10. Glaceon, If you've got the time, perhaps you could make me a badge using Shanoa from Castlevania: Order of Eccliasia?
Here's the Castlevania Wiki page if somehow you don't know of this character:

Here's the Image:  (Two links because one is the page with the original source material.  Credit and all that)

Also, would I need to give credit to you in my signature?  I see some do it and some don't.

  11. Noo.... ZEKE!  He will be missed.  Seriously.  It would ruin his ending in New Mystery.  Why Remove Zeke?  To make room for some bland-ass Berkut guy who looks to be as generic a villian as Caelach?

Also, is that Really Nuibaba?  Really?  Because they wouldn't have just changed his sex, would they?

Lastly, Catria looks Gorgeous, Atlas looks like he's holding up the world with his muscles, and to top it all off....

    Spoiler

    It's Cain.

I don't see how cast size is relevant? It's not like those games aren't best being low-manned -- same for most of the series.

In Fates it would a good mechanic to keep units like Camilla in check, if anything. And in FE7, the endgame is so easy that near-soloing is as prominent as ever. Of course, that's partially the game's difficulty/balance at fault there.

I also hope it isn't "easily cured" because that kind of goes against the idea of preventing the notion of putting-all-eggs-in-one-basket, so to speak. Since you could just circumvent the mechanic on 1 or 2 units specifically by spamming the 'curing' items on them. In other words, making it easy to recover fatigue benefits better units much more than the worse ones.

I think the mechanic has a lot of potential, personally. If I were envision it existing in certain games, it only benefits them. Probably because every single game in the series is best played by spamming 3-5 of the best units for the most part.

I disagree.  Even with fatigue Certain games can still be broken because of other mechanics in place.  With how many games in the franchise rely on higher stats on at least a few units in order to win the later chapters, fatigue would make it unnecessarily difficult.  If units aren't able to survive one attack near the endgame, they are a bad choice for the end game, considering you have tried to give equal experience to everyone.

One of the reasons fatigue worked for Thracia was because the stats capped at 20.  So the units that you didn't use for a while could still reliably catch up.  There wasn't really a gap in usability, and the staff users were all broken if you could get their skill and magic up.  Even with fatigue you could still abuse the game to it's limits.   No mattar what, people will always find a way to trivialize mechanics.  Unless there are things put in place to prevent abuse (fatigue is a good starting point, but it's not perfect) people will find a way.

Also with cast size: the larger it is, the more you need to swap out for - leaving more and more to fall behind.  So, you have many mediocre units aside from the protagonist(s), and one good unit.  That means that if Future fire emblem games, like others in the series, prioritize higher stats near endgame and the caps are not low like in Thracia, fatigue only makes it so only a few are working at their best.  It makes everyone who is susseptable to being behind in stats.... behind in stats.  With a smaller cast, you can easily swap out a few units at a time and still be good, because you are not sacrificing huge benefits to large troops.

  13. I think Gaius's supports from awakening are not too bad.  Also henry, Gregor, and possibly maribelle?

My personal favorite supports come from sacred stones, with Binding blade coming in second, then FE 7, and FE 9, because I haven't touched that game.

My favorite support of all time has to be either Garret and Lalum's support, or Forde and Eirika.  There are tons of others that I love, but some just seem really special to me.  (I like Marisa's supports with Gerrik and Tethys especially.)

Remember, Laguz lose their powers if they conceive a child upon a Beorc and that the Parentless are ostracized by Laguz.

As much as I love the Tellius games, I don't recall this specific point being explained.  I remember it being in various conversations throughout the story of Radiant Dawn, but why do they lose their powers?  Is the birthing process magical, or something?

This doesn't happen for Manaketes, so.... why laguz?

That would be Innes. This is for The Sacred Stones

Well, instead of Making that Innes, Make Marisa be this archer, with these growths and bases.  I originally planned for someone like this to be a hack character who joins as a level 10 unit, but seeing as almost every archer starts with shit bases, this would be a nice breather, and gives incentive to train marisa in the first place.   Oh, and with 7 con.

It's a lot to ask, but I hope you consider it, nonetheless.

  16. Is it GBA?  If it is, then great!  Also, I'm keeping this ambiguous of the character because you haven't specified a game.

The 2nd bow user you get (if you use FEditor to make name changes among others  you can) has C-Rank in Bows, Starts with a Killer bow, and has the following bases and growths:

    HP - 27 at 40%

    Strength/Magic - 11 at 50%

    Skill -  15 at 65%

    Speed - 14 at 45%

    Luck - 7 at 20%

    Defense - 8 at 70%

    Resistance - 4 at 15%

  17. How about Number 59 Bus Shelter?  That's a name. Somewhere.

    Or Kid.

    Pirate

    North (West)

    Ordette

    Brobdingnagian

    Sodren

    Chance

    Bethany

    Edith

    Dolly

I know these aren't common, but there are so many names, that even IS recycles them.  Granted, most of the kaga games are fan translated, but still.  If there are so many names to choose from, why re-use them when a game may be remade?  Then you'll need to rename them to avoid confusion and it seems weird and unnecessary.

  18. Is Nuibaba still in the game?  Because I felt that while optional, it was a part of the game I HAD to do, each playthrough.   I always thought that it was an interesting battle, and it had a very creepy narrative for the time. Plus, it gets rid of the spawning witch squads.  So, I always made sure to promote Alm just before I did that map, if only to get the Holy Bow from the Fear shrine and have Alm go ham on everyone.   The rewards?  A magic ring, and a glorious staff bot.  (I hope that she's not Berkut's girlfriend and he is not the Zeke Replacement)

Do you mean a protagonist who is a criminal unjustly (either through being falsely accused or because the laws he broke were unjust) or one who rightly deserves his sentence?  If the latter, what's my motivation to care about this character?

The latter.  He gets punished for the crime, but his reasoning was because of unjust laws and cultures in a strict system.  Having freedom is taken for granted in some areas, and putting the spot light on how rough society can get at a higher level simply due to fear or resentment can show just how valuable the aspect of freedom or choice can be.  But that's more My Idea than anything.  Although Freedom has been explored in FE before, I feel being forced into a situation you don't like being in (controlling an unlikable protagonist in this case) makes the game feel more disheartening, and the game should make you feel on edge if you are controlling a protagonist with shady ambitions.

Whether he gets redemption or not, I believe that Fire Emblem stories do well if they have a huge point of tragety to them.  Not lazily put in, but something that makes the player feel as if his/her or the protagonist's efforts were for nothing, or making the protagonist have some revelation about the reality around them, and how to adapt to the changes.  Does the character lose his/her identity or not?  Will this character accomplish these goals?  If not, how will any impending conflicts be resolved with this character having changed?  I think these aspects make a character interesting, and not neccisarily if they are straight up a horrible person or not.  I'd just like to see a new and somewhat darker take on a protagonist of a Fire Emblem game, because we haven't had a truly good one since Path of Radiance.  ( FE 11 Marth had good writing and dialogue, but everyone thinks he's more bland than a slice of wheat bread, so my opinion does not matter. :Gonzales:)

Same. It'll make for interesting strategies and it also encourages/forces players to consider using more than just a select number of characters. I always felt that I was one of very few people that tried to use each character as equally as possible.

Then how did you beat Radiant dawn?  Nevermind, that's a dumb question.

As for fatigue... I think they decided to put it in to try and balance out grinding and difficulty scaling.  With grinding certain characters over and over, they get overpowered really fast.  If you go into Gaiden's maps with overpowered characters, the game becomes a joke.  If you don't grind at all, the game becomes much more challenging.  Fatigue limits how far you can advance because eventually maps will become unbeatable with certain team members.  This gives you an incentive to grind some levels and use other characters to have a well balanced team so the difficuty doesn't get too hard.  And since going to the mila statues appears to be the only way to remove fatigue aside from the food?   I will say this, though.  The more units you use in a team, the less replay value a Fire Emblem game has, in my opinion,  Part of replaying the games is using certain units that you didn't before.  With gaiden's small cast, I don't think people will be replaying this game more than once.  I feel that fewer playthroughs will be unique.
