  1. Hey everyone, I wanted to load up a GBA emulator on my work Mac, so I can play some FE during my lunch breaks. (I have a DS at home, but I don't want to bring that into the office day in and day out). Was looking around but couldn't figure out what a good GBA emulator for Mac is. I downloaded a version of VisualBoy, but it was defunct. (It may have been an older version, but I couldn't find anything more recent in a quick search). Anybody have any suggestions, links? Thanks!
  2. *Spoilers, obviously* So just started Part 2, Black Eagles, supporting Edelgard. Didn't recruit anyone except Sylvain and teachers. I just ran into combat against some Golden Deer and took them out and got the classic FE death sound and slow-mo scene. I immediately felt bad... So, is there a way to recruit former students as enemies, or will I just have blood on my hands from here on out?
  3. Don't know if someone has done this already, but I dove back a couple pages and didn't see it: Since feathers are a major limiting factor in upgrades and the jump from 4* to 5* takes a ton, I went through the drop list to iron out which 4* you should upgrade vs. which ones you shouldn't because they have a natural 5* drop. I'd recommend not spending the feathers to upgrade these folks from 4* to 5*: Red: Ogma, Cain, Corrin (male), Chrom, Caeda, Marth, Roy, Tiki, Tharja, Lilina Blue: Abel, Effie, Catria, Peri, Nowi Green: Camilla, Sheena, Hawkeye, Raven, Fae, Merric Grey: Jeorge, Kagero, Jakob, Sakura, Maria Any other 4* that drops doesn't have a higher version (such as Eliwood or Azama, for example), so I would make those a priority to take up to 5* if you have the feathers. All of those "other" 4* do also have a 3* version so don't bother updating a 3* to a 4* unless you love them and want them boosted ASAP. If you can wait for drops, wait for drops.
  4. There's actually a science to this. Because some characters come in multiple star levels, you'd be (potentially) wasting a ton of feathers since the upgrade from 4* to 5* is huge. Here's the list of 4* that have their own natural 5* Red: Ogma, Cain, Corrin (male), Chrom, Caeda, Marth, Roy, Tiki, Tharja, Lilina Blue: Abel, Effie, Catria, Peri, Nowi Green: Camilla, Sheena, Hawkeye, Raven, Fae, Merric Grey: Jeorge, Kagero, Jakob, Sakura, Maria Anyone that comes out as a 3* also has a 4* version. So you can either upgrade from 3* to 4* then 4* to 5*, or just wait for 4* then go direct. Based on your list, I'd take either Setsuna or Matthew up to 20 then upgrade them to 5*, since neither of those has a natural 5* you may full in the future.
  5. Are all of them Level 40? If not, I'd suggest taking them all to 40 (pain, I know), because one may come out with better stats than the others. Then I'd merge them. The feather gain for a 5* is way too low. Or maybe save one of them, in case there is some period in the future where having two Tikis might be beneficial for a mission.
  6. Don't use Sothe. His stats transfer directly from PoR to RD. In most cases, you'll get a Sothe that is actually weaker than if you don't transfer his Lvl 20 stats. Here's my list of characters I think you'll get a lot of our by transferring: Jill (she can use the Str and Def early in Dawn Brigade if you can cap them) Marcia (the +2 Spd will help her double more enemies in 2-E) Oscar and Mia (if you can cap their strength they'll be more useful throughout Chapter 3) Zihark (He needs the Str desperately and the Spd can't hurt either) Nephenee doesn't really need the transfers to be awesome, but they can't hurt. And while Makalov has crappy availability like all of the other Crimean Knights, if you can cap his speed he can double up some enemies in Chapter 2 and be decent instead of generally worthless. Ilyana has great availability in RD but she's not likely to cap what she really needs (Speed) and she's going to the Greil Mercenaries who have better units to use instead of her. Mages generally don't hold up so well in Endgame either. Here's a list of people I wouldn't bother with in PoR because of stats or availability: Titania (good enough without), Shinon (unlikely to cap, good enough), Haar (unlikely to cap, freakin powerhouse without) Kieran, Astrid, Geoffrey, Volke, Lucia, Bastian, Calill, Tormod, Stefan (bad availability)
  7. I did an all girls Endgame in my most recent play and I'm doing Dawn Brigade only endgame this time through. What I've run into with Fiona and Meg is this: 1) As stated, they just take so much extra babying because the Daeins get the shaft on XP. 2) Meg's growths are very un-knight like, but sometimes she turns out OK at best. Her speed may get up there and she has good resistance for an armor unit, but never gets the strength or defense you want. 3) Fiona on the other hand can become very tanky. She easily maxed her Def and Res for me and had OK speed. But her strength and skill are horrible so she misses alot and hits for crap unless you forge for her. She was good for blocking up narrow passages but other than they not much. With Imbue, she's tough to kill if you can build her, but she's typically not worth it.
  8. For me its every Knight/General. I just can't hold myself up waiting for their lumbering, non-DAing butts to get across the map. The only one I could tolerate using was Horace in Shadow Dragon when I was doing a pre-promote only run because frankly I needed the characters. But I'm pretty sure after a couple levels I abandoned his lance skill and turned him into a Hero anyway.
  9. Jill L'Arachel (she's got a dark side) Fiora
  10. I voted yes, since I used it my first time around only for a Elysian Whip for Caeda, since I couldn't see making her anything other than a Falcoknight. This time around I scored a couple extra Master Seals early, since I'm playing an all-female (and Marth) cast, so I wanted to get them promoted early (Chap 14) so I'm not carrying around a bunch of people at lvl. 20 just waiting for a seal. Lena was waiting for one, Maria is fast approaching 20 and I figure I'll top out both Palla and Catria soon enough and need seals for both. I don't want to be waiting around all game for them to promote. But I've never used it for weapons or other items - just for promotion items.
  11. I hope they don't and I hope they don't create another race with most of their units being so frustrating to try to use due to transformation gauges and slow XP gain and then FORCE you to use those units for a handful of chapters when you have other units you'd rather be using in that deployment slot. But as said, if it's another Tellius game they will be. I could somehow see an "across the desert" game coming into play - but it's kind of hard to top a game where you've effectively killed a GODDESS and then make a storyline as intense or compelling. Unless they're going to go 40 years into the future when Ike is an old man (explaining why he wouldn't be as unstoppable as in RD). Just as long as the main character of a new game isn't Soren. . . UGH. There's enough stupid Ike-Soren yaoi trash in the world without bringing another game like that into the mix.
  12. Ilyana can become marginally better if you help her out with a data transfer from Radiant Dawn to boost her MAG and SKL. While she comes overleveled when you get her in the DB, by the time those levels balance out, that extra +2 really helps her out. The unfortunate thing is her awful, awful speed. The second time I played through (with data transfer) I used her throughout just because she was there so much and gave me a unit that I could help bolster my force with when necessary. I was going to take her to Endgame with me but didn't have enough slots - and that was really only because I supported her with Zihark and didn't want to separate them because I think they should be together forever, heh. But yeah, generally, not that great. But, like a lot of units, I'm willing to look past their shortcomings just because I like them. It's the reason why I'll field Fiona or Ilyana over Shinon every time (face it, he's a douche).
  13. There's nothing wrong with Wind. The might and crit are lower than thunder, but it has a bonus damage effect that is far more useful. You'll run into a lot of Ravens, Hawks and Wyverns throughout the course of the game. Plus Wind tomes have good hit so you'll rarely ever (if ever!) miss. Soren also activates Adept a lot to make up for the lower tome power. All in all, he can wipe out or cripple most units in one turn. For mages in PoR, you've basically got to stick to their element type. You don't gain weapon levels fast enough with tomes to justify using another one. So unless you want to keep forging yourself good stuff, just stick with what you're given.
  14. I'm doing a cavaliers and Ike only playthrough right now (so I can do an all cavalier Endgame in RD). Makalov is easily one of the better units I have. His strength is second highest (after Kieran) and his defense is the highest (on fixed mode) and he's on the same level with Kieran now (about Lvl. 7 paladin). His speed and skill aren't exactly great, however, but he takes hits well. His biggest downside is having swords as a primary and coming later in the game. He's weak when you first get him so you have to baby him to make him useful. But when he promoted I gave him axes and he's been tearing up people ever since. His join time makes him one of the harder cavs to use, but his stats are none too shabby. This was my first time using him and I'm pleasantly surprised. But don't use him if you're not going to take the time to build him up.
  15. 1. Rolf 2. Ike 3. Nephenee 4. Jill 5. Haar Rolf just tore everything apart in Endgame. He could kill just about anything in one round between the combination of his high criticals, Adept, and Deadeye. He beat Ike by about 10-12 kills I think.
  16. I think this is probably the best way to describe it - perfectly worded. It's not necessarily that the GMs are better - some DB units can actually grow to be better than characters of a similar class in other parts - it's that the disparity between allies and enemies is smaller outside of the DB making those chapters easier and the DB units *relatively* more useful. Rolf can become a better unit than Shinon, but Shinon is relatively more useful because he doesn't start at Lvl. 1 doing crap damage. The disparity between Rolf and enemies is greater than the gap between Shinon and enemies. I'd say this is as close to philosophy as we'll be getting on this forum any time soon, heh.
  17. I have the patience. And the method of using BEXP to take someone up to 99 so they level on their first attack always works well. If you try to pour too much straight BEXP into her or Astrid or other lousy characters, they turn out crappy because you're only getting +3 stats before they cap when you could be getting 4 or more by doing a combat level. I usually pump Fiona with one or two levels straight then take her to 99 for the first level and forge her a lance with improved might and hit to bail her out as she gets started. Her Imbue skill makes her very usable as a harassing unit. By letting Sothe wear down units and moving in Fiona for the kill, you'd be surprised how well she can become if you use her correctly. The biggest problem is her crappy move restrictions though on a couple of maps, but still, I just like her. I mean come on, she didn't HAVE to fight for the Daein like her father before her - but she does, proudly. I respect that and I feel like it's a challenge for me to try to help her live up to her father's reputation. God I love story in video games - even if I have to expand and make some of it up myself as I go along. ;)
  18. There are a mix of factors that decide what makes a unit good, and I think for people it varies on how you look at them. The combination of availability, base stats, growth, weapons/skills, supports, and movement all play a part in the equation. But then, I think the issue being knocked at here is - their general usefulness in the chapters they are around. If you're going to hypothetically level the playing field between Zihark and Mia, then my vote goes for Zihark. He's a critical unit to help the weaker Dawn Brigade. I consider him the better unit because he is more useful than Mia - especially on the higher difficulty. Mia suffers from being surrounded by other good units that are as good or better than her, while Zihark is one of the best available for 3-6 and 3-13. But, if you flip-flopped them and put Mia in the Dawn Brigade and Zihark with Ike and the gang, I would say that Mia is better based on the situation - as long as you're keeping all other factors equal. A unit's overall utility is definitely a factor in deciding, to me, how good they are. But it's not the end-all be all. While Haar is arguably one of the most useful units in the game, I would argue that Jill is the superior unit in the long run because at similar high-levels, while her STR and DEF lags a little bit, her extra speed allowing her to double - more chances to critical and more chances to activate Stun - makes her better than Haar in my book. I think tier lists, however, are built with utility as the main focus. Hence why Rolf ranks toward the bottom. He's not a very useful when you get him and requires babying. But once he hits Marksman he's near unstoppable in my experience.
  19. On my last playthrough I also managed to kill everyone except Laura and the Black Knight on 3-7 (and Jill since I recruited her to the GM). Laura only lived because I was out of people to attack with when the turn ended. It was just a slaughter. Haar racked up such a body count on that level.
  20. Yeah, if your cat is fighting you may get two full turns (ally and enemy phases) probably before you're out or close to it.
  21. For me its: Any non-Royal, non-Skrimir, non-heron laguz. I don't even waste my time with them. When I'm forced to use them, the only kills they get are when I need to knock someone off to save one of my other units. Otherwise, not worth wasting good XP for my beorc units on them. Yes, that means you Volug and Ranulf. I hate you two most of all for wasting one deployment space on your forced entry for like 100 chapters in the game. But also: Meg - underleveled, slow as ass AND ugly Tormod - XP sink in the DB levels and then useless in Part IV. Makalov - Worse than Astrid because he doesn't have Paragon and has to take counterattacks (unless you're using a Wind Edge, but then his damage is awful anyway) AND is an obnoxious goofball on top of it. Frankly I like both Fiona and Astrid. With a little babying then a forged lance, Fiona can be helpful to the DB which needs additional units. Her canto allows her to help chip away at units on 3-6 and then retreat to safety. And Astrid was actually pretty decent for me on my last playthrough. With a PoR transfer to boost her speed and skill a couple points and then giving her some opportunities to pick up kills with Paragon, she turned out to be very useful for me by the time I got to Part 4 and worked wonders for bringing down those sneaky falcoknights in the first Ike map there.
  22. Well my success ratios with him make him the second best in my opinion, considering this quiz (and especially judging by the response) is just opinion, I'm going to stand by it. I dare you to level up Rolf and give him Adept and tell me he's not unstoppable. He ORKOs everything and has Marksman range so he gets counterattacked by no one. He takes a little time to get going but once he hits his stride, watch out. And I'm still of the opinion that Volug - along with every non-Royal laguz (except Skrimir and Herons) is useless unless you're really into wasting XP.
  23. Killed Ashera about 10 times before realizing I had to finish her off with Ike AND only lost Sanaki and Gareth in the process. (It was my first playthrough, cut me some slack) Killed every boss in Part Four Endgame with Rolf all in one round, except for Ashera. Leveled Astrid up to a Lvl. 5 Silver Knight. She was actually one of my best units throughout part 4. On this playthrough I am planning to go through Endgame with only the required units, mounted units, and Elincia - (Fiona, Geoffrey, Kieran, Astrid, Makalov, Oscar, Titania, Mist, Renning).
  24. 1. Ike and Rolf - I've never played a game where Rolf isn't one of my best units, his stats are insane and his extra range plus Double Bow is just hax. AND Triangle Attack. 2. Rafiel 3. Meg, Fiona, Lyre, Lethe, Vika, Oliver, Micaiah (slow as ass, worthless 4-E stats, only good for staves and weakening armors), Tormod, Makalov, Renning 4. 4E-3 - dragons are rough and Dheginsea is a badass 5. Aran - the extra power will make up for his crappy speed and his high DEF will allow him to take several hits. 6. Calill 7. Edward - I guess, though Zihark and Mia are both better. 8. Soren 9. Tibarn, Caineghis, Giffca, Naesala, Nailah, Kurth 10. Geoffrey 11. He says he is not so no since there is no legitimate proof otherwise. Though I fail to see how this can be objectively graded, I figure I'd give it a shot anyway.
