Other way around. They removed the ability to buy games from the eShop in 2023, and only recently extended that to "no online communications whatsoever". I actually just tested this on my copy of Fates. Can't purchase any new DLC anymore. I assume Rev is in the same boat.

That seems a weird way of doing it. I remember when the Wii went out of commission I was still able to (and actually did) purchase games for a good two years or something afterwards. Was pretty desperate to find a way to get rid of the last 200 points I never spent XD

I'm surprised you didn't mention Manfroy as he is arguably a bigger deal than fellow clones of Gharnef just on the basis of everything he does in both gens. Lekain and Thales are also important villains but not on the level of Manfroy.

On the heroic side of things Linoan, Scarlet, Lorenz (Archanea), Nasir and Skrimir are notable because there is a bit of focus put on them in the plot of their games unlike 90% of the remaining playables still missing.

Like, I love Vaike as much as the next fan but the plot doesn't give him any focus or importance.

And of course Engage has quite a few still missing who are important to the plot of either the main game, or the DLC, but that's a given and isn't going to be the case for long.

I would actually put Lekain on par with Manfroy. They are pretty significant influences on both their games.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you saying the difficulty of Binding Blade is mild compared to Conquest.

51 minutes ago, A.G. Zhark said:

But this leads me to a final question. If I were to purchase Fates: Revelations, would the difficulty be any worse, and are there any other maps aside from the infamous endgame Takumi map that I need to watch out for?

That might be a moot point. I don't think you can buy Revelation anymore, as they didn't make physical copies and the 3DS's online support finished last month. Unless that's only for gameplay and shopping is still up for a while.

  4. Yay, Nergal is finally in the game. And while we've been waiting years for him to get in, the likes of Anankos, Medeus and even Veld managed to get in as well. That means all of the major villains and protagonists are in the game. Well, aside from Sombron due to the recency factor, but, ignoring Engage, who is the highest profile character not in the game? Which is a bit more neutral a way of phrasing it as who deserves to be in the most that isn't already.

Personally, I think there's an Athos shaped hole in the cast that they'll have to fill eventually. Raydrik and Jeddah are also pretty much the co antagonist of their games, even if they're not main villains like Nergal. And lastly, while it's a different style or importance, Malledus, and to a lesser extent Dorias, are characters with major speaking roles in their game that deserve to be in since August demonstrated there is a place for the unplayable advisor characters.

What about you? Who do you think is the most important character not in the game?

I know a guy who jumped straight into lunatic. I have no idea why, they weren't even that experienced with FE.

To be fair to him, I usually jump into any new game I play on the hardest available difficulty with the arrogance of Mongolian Kahn. I'm an experienced gamer, I've been doing this shit almost thirty years. No new game is going to kick my ass! Unless it's a game from Treasure, then I know better.

Point is, Fire Emblem isn't an easy series. Permadeath is very punishing for very minor mistakes, and I expect many new players would struggle even with the reputable easier titles in the series. There probably is a correlation between the series' success and the introduction of casual mode. Experienced Fire Emblem players who knows how to avoid the pitfalls and which stats to focus on might find a lot of Fire Emblem games pretty easy, but that stuff is not intuitive to noobs. There are a lot of games where arrogance in one's general gaming skills will not be punished, but Fire Emblem is not one of them. You have to learn how to Fire Emblem well. That's why I try to urge newer players to play Genealogy early. Because that game is way more intense and fun when you're bad at Fire Emblem.

You're really hung up on that, huh.

I genuinely think an Ashamed Almedha pairing would be way more interesting than Harem number 5. For one, it would be the only reasonable way to put Almedha in the game, by either making her a backpack or by showing her in a point in her life where she could transform. It'd also give us a non insane version of Ashnard (well relatively speaking). Almedha also fell for Ashnard because he was intensely sexy to her, which I'd love to see them try to depict while being PC. Finally, you want ethnic (which let's acknowledge us a silly term because everything is ethnic), dragon laguz are vaguely Indian inspired, let's put Ashnard in a Sherwani, he'd look amazing.

Or even just have it be random selection across multiple games, as it was in the earliest banners. But I'll admit I like it better when banners are themed.

Theme it around diaster couples.  I've already suggested Hardin and Nyna, but we also have Prince Ashnard and Ameldha, Brendan and Sonia, Sombron and Zephia (though those latter two probably weren't married). Maybe an engaged Julius and Ishtar. Or even Alvis Deirdre couples. Actually,no, give us real fanservis. Cigyun and Victor.

Based on what I could find on the internet, the 3DS and Wii U versions of the VC don't support Link Cable multiplayer for the vast majority of games. I couldn't find anything about the Switch VC though.

The pre-switch virtual consoles didn't allow for net play or inter console connections at all. I've never got it working, but play online is there as an option.

And I'll go one further on Jotari's point about making Castor more available: move Barst to joining here with Ogma instead of plopping him in the very next chapter. It'd give him a better entry point, give that squad another front-liner and maybe encourage people to use him more.

It would be a bit excessive to have all three of the axe bros with Ogma here on this chapter, but they all should have been connected to him narratively. They're in this part of the world because they're helping Ogma out. Not because they decided to travel to the complete other side of the continent to help Marth with a conflict Marth didn't even know he would be fighting. So, yeah, putting one of them here instead of the complete randomness of their other join times makes perfect sense. But the other two should mention Ogma when they join too. Hell maybe one of them should join in Chapter 1. You don't get any natural axe users with the starting brigade and it's already in close proximity to Ogma.

I will third the idea of regenerative durability that people are tossing around for tomes or even all weapons, although instead of full regen each time, how about each item gets a recovery rate that gets halved if you used it that map? That would also enable you to assign more uses to items that might be broken otherwise.

An obvious example is Warp. Instead of 1-use that's live every chapter, you get 3 charges with a recovery rate of 1. So you can burn two uses to warpskip a map, but then you only have one charge next map and you have to go two maps to get those charges back. So there's still some semblance of budgeting.

Yeah, extra maps like skirmishes and modern paralogues throw a wrench into it but you can make that a Casual-Classic split.

I'll also second skill scrolls like @lenticular said, although I'm thinking more SNES/PoR with RD scrolls. So you can redeem scrolls by unequipping them but you're not strip mining your army's skill lists and erasing their uniqueness. There might still be some characters with pre-equipped scroll skills, albeit in the minority.

Basically, Thracia stamina system only for weapons instead.

I wonder if it will be a duo or harmonic this year?  The last 3 years have had harmonics, though I personally would prefer for this banner to be a duo since I like seeing canon couples together.  Personally I would like Rath, Sue, Naesala, Leanne, Mae and Boey in some type of combination.  I miss the bridal banners that had several different games on them and not the guy and his harem like the past 2 years.  I would be really happy if Sue and Petra ended up on it because I love it when the "bride" is not in a western style dress for a change, I get tired of the boring white dresses that all honestly look the same save for some minor details.

You'd think every bridal banner would be duos so they can put actual married couples together. But I guess any two random woken paired up from across the series has better sales metrics.

  12. 2 hours ago, Acacia Sgt said:

That could be an option too, I suppose.

Yes, they were all the non-Spotpass Robin-only brides.

It's curious how they never did a "duo trio" again. Would certainly be neat to see that happening again, even if it's again with a Pegasus Sister Trio.

Oh man, now imagine if Nyna was in a duo with Tatiana.

Is there a set pattern for duos or harmonics? Because Nyna as a duo with Hardin could actually be great in how much it actually subverts happy newly weds.

The Link Arena on original hardware wasn't compatible with wireless play according to the .org wiki, so it's fair to assume that the virtual console versions are the same. So you wouldn't be able to play online link arena on VC, assuming the VC version is the exact same as the cartridge version. I haven't tested this myself though, so I may be wrong.

Source: Link Arena - Fire Emblem Wiki

Surely the Switch VC doesn't only emulate wireless play between games. I mean, most of the games on it are built in multiplayer and the original gameboy didn't even have wireless (kind of, there was that infrared thing on the side which I think had some niche use). It can't be that hard to make a game think it's connecting to another gameboy via wired connection over a switch's wifi connection.

That's interesting. You will go into detail about how that works, right?

3 hours ago, Shaky Jones said:

There will be a lot of walking. Just walking. Especially for Mr No Pants. If you didn't already make Marth head down due to needing him in combat, you have to walk Marth allll the way back to the beginning to enter the bottom village, just so he can walk aaallll the way north east on the opposite side of the map, past multiple sand tiles, just so he can re-recruit the man who's outdone by a reclassed Cord in Shadw Dragon

Yeah, that's basically what I remember from this chapter. Desperately needing Marth for combat in the first handful of turns but him being busy recruitment Castor. If they were going to do a Genealogy reference, why not give me the pursuit ring or something from that really suspicious peninsula that is absolutely irrelevant? And what is Castor even doing in that village? He's from Talys, just work him into the plot by having him be working for Ogma. Then we get a long range chip option on the right side.

Also you never mentioned it, but what a Ghebtastic boss design.

I'd also like to see a return to the magic system of Three Houses. Um, I'm throwing hands melodramatically for Three Houses magic? Yeah, OK, maybe not. Regardless, I think that per-map uses for spells was excellent to provide meaningful limits on how often you can use the most powerful magic but without encouraging the sort of hoarding of rare tomes and staves that traditional systems do. I did also like having each character have a unique learned spell list, since it helped differentiate them, but I'm not as tied to that as to the per-map uses part.

The ability to freely reassign tomes that recharge each chapter is actually a really cool idea. I wonder if I could implement that into a hack.

Fog of War imo is a decent concept that the FEs don't know how to use well. If enemies respected fog of war and played more defensively or cautiously with it around, I imagine it would be a lot less aggravating.

Lifis definitely is an interesting character. It's not often that you see a villain who pretends to side with the protagonists for extremely personal and selfish reasons, taking advantage of their credulity. I'm certainly curious to see where they go with him.

Enemies running out of the fog only to stand beside your units and not attack because they've been surprised, like how the rules apply to your units, would actually be hilarious and genuinely fun.

Soren erasure! Pelleas erasure! Oliver erasure! Ilyana Rexbolting Dheg erasure!

I can see them limiting Lifis to Safy as his lone female conversationalist. Sain had 6/7 of his supporters being women, Saul had 4/5 of his the same, Gatire 3/4. For Lifis, however... Perne, Shiva, Somebody, Somebody, Safy. Five chains sounds like enough for what would almost certainly be a remake on a budget. Do we in the year 20XX really want Lifis trying to hit on more women? Plus we've got Homer to account for too, and maybe Shannam.

I think Lifis and Robana deserve a hashing out as well. So, Perne, Saft, Shiva, Ronan, and, if I'm to nominate his random ass choice of partner then I choose...Fred. Aka Olwen's underling. They're both sort of simps, but Fred does it right.

Conversely, what about a tome with built-in Renewal? This would let Micaiah "Sacrifice", even if just for 2 or 3 HP, every single turn. Thus making her more effective at her signature gimmick. And hey, 10 exp is 10 exp.

You do that and you nuke her combat ability completely. She'd go from our first time lord* to our first staffbot lord, which she almost is post promotion anyway. Besides, that just means Laura gains less exp by healing her.

Moral is: Never write a character who can warp around the world. Otherwise you'll have people asking "Why can't I have Hubert use warp" or "What the fuck is warp powder?".

It's just hard to not get over just how stupid going through a seemingly arduous trial AGAIN sounds given that it's a sequel. Athos is shitty sure, but how can anything top "I fucked up, get the same things you already got a 2ND time, and you get no help from me". Bro sent Wendell alone. Doesn't Athos at least give you Pent the game breaker? I haven't played FE7 in ages, but as far as shitty tropes go, at least you know the devs were going for the typical "prove yourself" nonsense, which simply is too stupid to do in a sequel game with the same guy.  Hell, he's just doing nothing except chilling with Tiki whose fate is literally dependent on whether you get the shards or not so I can't imagine any conversation between them during all that time he's not helping out just going "Yeah, if Marth doesn't make it here with all the shards, you're fucked lmao". Maybe do something about it!? It's not like you were guarding her. The place is overrun with thieves and druids when Marth makes it here, and Tiki has to hide in some dingy corner alone.

Yes you have, and you're being rewarded now.

And you're right. Even if he didn't have the ability to warp across the continent, he's still shit all when you meet him at the ice dragon temple. He could have travelled to Marth and met him half way to hand over the Light Sphere.

(Fun Fact: The portraits of Lifis's underlings have character names on the wiki list I got them from. It seems that some bosses' portraits are being recycled even before their own appearance)

The wiki does lie about one portrait being a Lifis underling. The guy with the eye patch. But that guy never actually gets to be a boss. In a way, Thracia is less the game of boss portrait reuse and more the game where generic NPCs are made bosses.

Eyvel quite possibly would've been able to avoid getting doubled, and she out-cons him by one, but I don't want to take that risk.

I think that's the grace of Lil Manster. Don't think the original was so kind as to explain what these random pieces of cloth were for.

tbh, Sacrifice needed to be a lot stronger to begin with. As is, the Miccy's miraculous ability on which her adoration rests... is basically a Heal spell except that Micaiah goes from getting one-shot by almost everything to getting one-shot by everything. Big whoop. If it was at least, like, Mend+Restore at a fixed HP cost of 5-ish... it would still be almost entirely obsolete once she promotes, but at least it would be a more relevant ability in part 1

Sacrifice is great...for the easy exp it provides.

Lekain uses mass silence in the first tower chapter. Though chances are the only mage other than Mickey you're using is Sanaki. If we do want to make Sacrifice, though, rather than removing most of its HP cost, I'd give it range. That would let you have a lot more freedom where you position your units.

Like Nintendo has ever been big on serious stories?🤔 -Fire Emblem has always been an exception like that. And as for Gotoh specifically...

...reminder that this is what Nintendo had been cooking when was he was first invented. And was still largely cooking on the SNES one year after FE1, seven maidens trapped in crystals is Kaga-rific. And kept cooking with the Sages in OoT. (And Mario, Donkey King, Metroid, Kirby, F-Zero, Star Fox, Pokemon... not huge on grounded logical stories either back in the day.)

Genealogy Gen 1 and Thracia were the aberrations in Nintendo's then-portfolio. Gotoh and Gen 2 Lewyn were not, they were... misplaced let's say.😛 Misplaced, in that it's harder to justify aloof wise men in a more developed story like those Fire Emblem has had.

-I'm just looking for a way to not get infuriated by some senile pixels.😄

Issie with that logic is that I first met Gotoh in a game released in 2009.

  20. 9 minutes ago, BrightBow said:

Only arguing in favor relative to Athos.

Gotoh is bad, sure. But Athos is a special kind of awful. Gotoh's actions generally at least make sense on a conceptual level. Like, sending Marth across Anri's way to see the forgotten corners of the continent with his own eyes and give him a history lesson along the way is not a bad concept and makes sense for his character.
But it runs into all kinds of problems, like being part of the plot of Book 2 instead of Book 1, where the dragons were actually an important part of the plot. But Book 2 has Hardin as a fellow human being the main villain. Not to mention him acknowledging at the end of Book 1 that Marth has proven himself to him, so why sending him through hoops in Book 2?

Gotoh, in a way not much unlike Athos, kind of fails on this point because Marth is the one cleaning up Gotoh's shit. It's Gotoh's fault things are this way. It was his apprentice that stole his dark sphere and revived his enemy because he sucked as a teacher. But he just expects Marth to go around the world collecting orbs so Marth can defeat Gharnef. Dude, you have the power to warp entire armies. Bring Marth to you and help him collect the orbs yourself. You don't even personally take to the battlefield until Gharnef is dead and Medeus is cornered. Maybe if you showed up to fight Gharnef yourself then he wouldn't have cheated death and caused all the problems in Book 2.  Not to mention the world is literally at stake in Book 2 because of the shattered Starsphere and the most he could do is sent Wendell off to collect the shards. Is drinking tea at the ice temple really more important than searching for these things yourself?

The whole idea of the wise oracle testing the hero only works if the tester has no stake in the conflict. If they're just an outside for charged with arbitration and stopping the quest reward from falling into the wrong hands. But Gotoh not only has an invested interest in seeing Marth's side win, it's his fault this is all happening in the first place by training the guy running about the place mucking things up. A character should either have the capacity to help, but no desire to do so; or the desire to help, but no capacity to do so. Gotoh has both the desire to help and the evident capacity to do so, but just doesn't, which makes him look kind of lazy at best and an asshole at worst.

Phew, didn't realize I had that much pent up hatred for Gotoh. Still, what a cool head piece he wears. 7/10, decent character.

I mean, Athos never made Eliwood and company hike through deserts, volcanoes, glaciars and houses full of thieves and dragons for no reason while the world was at stake.

Is that sarcasm? Because he kind of did. Well, except the glaciers part. Sure he gets warp happy at the end, but there's a whole bunch of walking around before then. And for crying out loud the dude must know where the shrine of seals is. He was probably there when it was built. He could have cut out half the game by fetching a mountain based map of Bern and saying "somewhere around here. South central east."

lol I actually forgot Micaiah also got the rapier even though she's in a completely different classline that already excells at killing armors. Was that really necessary, guys?

Probably. Armoured knights actually have Res in Radiant Dawn.

If we are designing non rapier weapons for lord though, then I suggest Mickey get a tome that has built in vantage. You then take Wrath of Edward, put her down to 1hp via sacrifice and then let her go to town on enemies. Coming to think of it, Wrath Miciaha might be a decent build for her even without vantage tome. She'll die on one hit anyway, might as well make her a Crit machine with a near certain HP lost mechanic.
