Have a craving for capture? Reminiscing about rescue? Longing for ledges?

Yes, all three of these specifically. And I'm also possibly the only one in the world who actually likes the Biorhythm and wants to see it returned. But, more than any of those, what I yearn for is the Tellius style skill system (wait, no alliteration there, uh, I guess I'm Simping for Skills as Stocks?). Do away with this learnable class skills nonsense and give me skills as a resource I can freely distribute to the units I want to favour.

The best part of this guy is his release quote. Dude (seemingly) repents and becomes a fisherman if spared. I've always been sad that a lot of the game's bosses are uncapturable, because sparing those that can be spared and seeing how they react is so interesting

I wish more was done mechanically with that feature. Like, you get certain rewards for sparing certain enemies, but sparing other enemies comes to bite you back in the ass. Bucks goes on to find a quiet life as a fisherman and you get a crusader scroll or something as a reward, but if you spare Lopt bishop number 3 then the dude comes back to ambush you two chapters later because of course he's not going to repent and change his life style (except randomly make one lopt bishop do exactly that and sabotage the enemy just to humanize and provide flavour).

To its credit, the single most important and most crippling to miss gaiden is also... kind of impossible to miss unless you actively let it happen? Those houses are super easy to protect. Though I maintain that it should not have been missable, period. It's your introduction to fog, your introduction to capturing bosses and not letting them go, your introduction to thieves, your introduction to healers, your introduction to scrolls...

Seriously, the more I think about it the worse it seems. Why the fuck is 2x missable? There's so much to unpack! Anyway, I forgot the point I was making.

Even August's introduction here is tied to the Gaiden in a narrative sense. Like we've set up August as a character by using Lifis as a character. Yet you can just walk off and never see Lifis (until you get to the end game and one of the Deadlords randomly has the face of someone you've never seen before).

3 hours ago, Saint Rubenio said:

This translation makes no mention of Lifis here. A liberty, probably, because in the old one - and I imagine in the original, though I cannot know for sure, it wouldn't be the first time the old translation just invented shit - he explictly says he's joining up to fight Lifis.

...Which very quickly becomes an extremely stupid motivation for him to stick with Leif. So I can follow the logic of wording this more vaguely.

Ronan is the Jamke of Thracia. Only unlike Jamke he sucks at combat. But Jamke being good at combat is largely irrelevant because he can't pass down any good skills. So yes, Jamke is the the Ronan of Genealogy.

    2 hours ago, BrightBow said:

In any case, being a bow user is just not great in Thracia. Not just because Tanya and Ronan have really poor bases, but also because capturing is such a huge part of the game. And bows simply cannot do that because they cannot initiate combat at 1 range.

Dagdar can also use how's from base if you really do need someone to, which kind of invalidates his daughter entirely.

As for Book 2 Arran, you know it wouldn't surprise me if it at one point he was actually meant to be the same old Jagen.
Then one day they decided to have Jagen take Malledus's role, so he became too important to die as a unit

That was a curious choice on retrospect. Replacing one old man who says stiff for another old man who says stuff. It's not like they actually did anything with Malledus being sick or dead (or captured in Pyrathi*wink*wink*). The replacement was entirely unnecessary. I'm not disappointed they did it, Jeigan is a bit more fun than Malledus, who is a pretty boring character, but there really wasn't much reason to. I guess it's kind of some fun realism, the guy who ostensibly sucked at fighting because he's old is now retired and can't fight at all. But they did kind of do Malledus dirty by just removing him entirely from the plot. At least give him some pathos by having Hardin kill him or something.

You wouldn't think it to look at him, but Bucks is one of a handful of bosses to have a unique portrait. You'd think he'd show up again as a random bandit, but nope. He gets to have a face.

Marty would seem like another obvious pick, but there isn't much point in going from unable to double to still unable to double.

Well it would defensively give him the potential to prevent being doubled, which is also really important. And if you do intend to use Marty long term his speed can be fixed with Scrolls. Though my knowledge of Thracia is not so perfect as to know exactly when the speed enhancing scrolls come.

    Augustus

That's one the fan translators didn't rush to change. He was called August in the old translation, and has been officially translated as August on CYL since 2021, and actually managing to get I to Heroes a year later. So this is really the only place you'll see anyone call him Augustus. Might be my bias speaking, but I do like August better. Augustus sounds too imperial and noble for a shady character like him (even though the word august itself can be used as a synonym for noble).

there's less of a reason for Hector and Lyn to receive personal weapons with the same special property of the Rapier

Thinking on this, lords going full cavalry armour killer kind of ruined Lyn a little bit too. Like, if it wasn't for that she could have gotten something else for the Mani Katti instead of competing with Eliwood (and anyone with an armorslayer or ridersbanes) for a niche. Mani Katti gets a lot of focus in the plot yet feels disappointingly standard overalls. It would be pretty huge for Lyn's viability if it was a 1-2 range prf or an early game Brave Sword or something.

  4. So GBA Fire Embelm has multiplayer. And, it actually used to be kind of popular back in the day. I remember even here on Serenes people were trying to do the Link Arena via pen and paper. And, of course, people who mod the game surely got some kind of online version of it working at some point. But, do we have an actual official online version of the Link Arena now? I've never actually managed to actually use it (because most of my real life friends are sucky adults with no time for video games), but the Switch Virtual Console, or whatever the service is called, has net play. So, shouldn't we be able to connect to the Link Arena in Blazing Blade (or Japanese Binding Blade) and actually play it online with relatively no fuss or hassle? That's how it works, right?

The devotion IS has to Lumera is pretty strange. Her death scene is often brought up as a laughing stock, and that IS themselves decided to immediately kill off Lumera just to adhere to the dead parent trope imply they had neither much ambition nor affection for the character.

And sure she's got big boobs but Lumera is hardly the only character who's got that going for her.

It might actually not be the boobs and could be the dragon. Let me have a gander at the potential remaining dragons in the series. Since they're inexplicably still cucking Dragon Laguz, that one seasonal aside, the only likely dragons we haven't seen (not even in the context of Fallens) are...Yahn, Morva and Sombron. Yeah, we are definitely at the bottom of the barrel dragonwise. And even for alts of existing dragons would be repeats since they've put all their eggs in one basket and insisted on giving us nothing but dragons for Halloween several years running. So, yeah, they could be milking Lumera for all she's worth because they've exhausted most other dragons. With hindsight, I think GHB Lumera was probably not the best choice. She was a free unit anyway, so she wouldn't have pulled in much cash. Nelucce would have been the most appropriate boss from Engage's early game to get the GHB treatment. He has slightly more focus of the minor boss crew and being the first human boss with revival stones is kind of memorable role for the series. Unless they were hoping Lumera's boobs would sell copies of Engage. Well, at least, if it is some dragon bias, that puts Morva in good standing for fallen next year.

EDIT: Nel and Nil are slipping my mind there. They're also dragons we haven't seen yet, and which ever of them is also called Rafal is a good a candidate for a fallen as any other. So we might see him push out Morva next year.

And dang, Lumera's voice acting is so good.

I may still pull a bit on this banner. Like, Lumera's voicing was amazing,

I'm going to second this. She went hard with that delivery on that line.

    1 hour ago, Mercakete said:

All in all...I'm not actually all that excited about any of this, which is kind of disappointing since I LOVE fallen banners. For Engage representation, I would have preferred Hyacinth and/or Morrion so they could join their kids. Maybe next year there'll be a bit more variety.

Lumera is a curious choice in that regard, since she's basically an end game boss while Morion and Haycinth are mid game. You'd think Lumera would be saved for later and hyped up a bit. Get some distance from her Mythic version. But Heroes has rarely if ever tried to play the long game. And I'm sure she would sell more than Htacinth or Morrion.

  6. Very surprising banner. Only Blazing Blade and Engage. No one at all is surprised about Veyle, I'm sure, but it is a bit surprising they gave the premium spot to Lumera of all people. Kind of weird that Engage is scarcely a year old and we have three Lumeras already (and no Wille Glanz).

I kind of wished they'd given Mythic Veyle Misercorde so Fallen Veyle could get Obscurite instead of something she never actually does in game. But I guess our first Veyle had to be a tome user. Still, what could have been cool here is if her attack was actually using the Fell Dragon Crystal whatever the time travel mechanic she steals is called. Or hell, just gives us Misercorde as a tome and call it a day. It deals magical damage in Engage anyway and it's not like they haven't done weird stuff like that before. Byleth wields a sword as a tome unit and Alear has dragon punches.

Ursula is definitely the most surprising one here. She was of course on my list, but not only two morphs, but tripling up on Blazing Blade characters. Wowzer! Feast well Blazing Blade fans, feast well. Unfortunately, I feel like this means that the Morph who most deserved the Fallen Spot, Brendan, will probably be overlooked next year. I say he's the most deserving because that's the only incarnation of the character you actually fight in the game. Though, on the other hand, maybe that means he's a shoein for next year. I doubt it though, as he's not really completing a set, since Uhai, Jerme, Kennith and Darin all exist too and there's no way any of those guys are getting in.

But the big news really is that Nergal is finally in the game! We can stop bitching! Unfortunately it seems to be in his base form, like Ashnard, so we won't get mad Nergal summoning the Fire Dragon any time soon (and by that I mean ever).

All in all, I'm very surprised, though not necessarily disappointed, they didn't give us give us a Fodlan character. Also a shame they seem to have no desire to break into the Thracia Deadlords and aren't in any rush to make the Archanea Fallen Maidens a set.

    Classes

The “Lycian Knight” appears to be the predecessor of Eliwood’s Lord class; it is a mounted class that wields both swords and lances (with a higher proficiency in lances) and promotes into a Paladin. The “Lycian Swordfighter” is almost identical to Lyn’s Lord class, but promotes to Swordmaster instead. Hector’s “Lycian Armorknight” class promotes to General and can wield both swords and axes. All three classes share the map and battle animations of the Lord classes and, in the English version, they have the same names as the corresponding promoted Lord classes (eg. Lycian Knight is named Knight Lord).

    https://serenesforest.net/general/unused-content/

A mounted class with swords and lances is just a cavalier. If we want lances Eliwood and rapier reference, make him infantry with swords and lances from base. It cavalry can have two weapons at base then why can't our main lord? Then for promotion he gets his horse and also axes for full weapon triangle advantage. And regular Paladins lose their axe rank in FE7, but only FE7, so Eliwood essentially promotes to a FE6 Paladin.

My third best guess why GBA hacking still gets attention is that any computer, phone or laptop from this century could run VisualBoyAdvance, while 3DS and Switch emulation is still imperfect even on the most powerful hardware. And any developer wants their game to be accessible to more players.

I think his is actually the most salient reason. GBA FeBuilderGBA didn't come out of nowhere. The GBA hacking scene already existed before that, it was created because of that scene. And people probably gravitated to the GBA games because they are more accessible that the SNES and easier to emulate than anything afterwards.

Also, who doesn't love those GBA animations? Trying to hack a Tellius or DS animation would involve actually learning to rig a model and animate in a way that looks good (and SNES models just don't look nearly as good).

"You can't call Skyrim shit until you've played it for 200+ hours!"
God I hate that argument. A video game is supposed to interest you as soon as possible, you shouldn't be obliged to play it for any extended length of time. Now ofc someone who spent more time on the game is generally going to have more to say than their counterparts, but that alone shouldn't make an opinion/impression any less or more valid.

Extended amount of time, no, not really, but I do think some amount of time if you're going to say in good faith that you have issues with it. It's at least going to be more informed than saying it's bad because of what other people have told you. Of course, anyone who isn't interested in playing Thracia, or any other game, because of its reputation is fair enough. But "It doesn't seem appealing to me" and "it's bad" are pretty different things.

I kinda wonder what made Eyvel take Leif into combat? Like, okay, I know he's supposed to be trained to eventually become a warrior, but she raises concerns about his youth and inexperience, reasonably so. Also, how did her daughters get captured so easily? Did she seriously not leave enough of a force to defend them or the town? The setup has lots of holes when you look at it seriously, lolllll.

That really depends on the scales we're dealing with. If it's What You See is What You Get, then I think it's very fair that she took all eight of her warriors out to deal with the pirate threat, because she probably needed every fighter and she didn't think there was much chance of the village being attacked while they were away. If there are a lot more soldiers than what we see, enough she'd reasonably have to spare then leaving some behind is a wise enough decision, if only to hold an enemy off until they return.

Alternately, Mareeta and Nanna were the force defending the town and they fucked it up. I bet Nanna's staff missed right when Mareeta needed a heal.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the warm welcome. 🙂

I have yet to complete any of the games but have had some success in Path of Radiance, and to a lessor extentSacred Stones. I keep trying new games in hopes of finding something that really clicks with me, most recently Vestaria Saga which may as well be FE for PC.

I don't really have a process, it's a matter of taking each turn slowly and trying to explore with the free cursor as much as I can. If I had a way to view the map more hollistically, or answer questions like "Where's the closest enemy?" things would be a lot more pleasant.

I'm a bit of a masochist but always on the lookout for tips, tricks or mods to make the games easier to enjoy. Most recently I've discovered that some of the newer AI models are able to provide me more readable versions of, say, stats pages than the raw OCR output. If only I could be 100% sure that they were accurate 🙂

It's good that you're a masochist, because that's a useful trait for a Fire Emblem player. Even though this is turn based you might find it being a lot harder than you anticipate. There is just a lot of data to sift through every turn. Experienced Fire Emblem players might few the series as easy, but it's really not. It's very punishing for even minor mistakes and it's very easy to make mistakes. Path of Radiance is probably a good start with that in mind. And, unlike most people, I'd actually recommend the first game in the series to you. Unlike most series that started on the NES, the first game has the reputation for being the easiest in the series, but it should still help you get the flow of the gameplay. Most people are turned off by the pretty poor UI, but that's... probably less of an issue for you. On the other hand I'm not sure how much external support would exist for an old NES game like that.

I'm convinced he only put Marty in the game specifically for people that want to use the trademark "bad axe unit" in case you don't like Ocean Man and Havalla doing a little silly. I have to thank him for that. You are still not forgiven for Genealogy.

Marty does have the niche of 15 base con and a 75% con growth (that's literally twice as much as the second highest con growth). Which quickly gives him the ability to capture anyone that functionally can be captured. You see, the reason he has that 0 skill and speed base is also to help him capture enemies. Because you can't halve nothing!

It's probably a different lake lady. For one thing, she is described as "old" here. Though I suppose this is 15 years later.

But more importantly she also clearly operates differently, considering Patricia makes no mention of having dropped an iron axe or anything.

The one from Vestaria also looks entirely different from her. So there are probably just a lot of lake ladies around trying to get rid of the junk people are dropping into their home.
    avs062.jpg

Well it is a traditional Japanese folk tale. We can't dismiss the possibility that Kaga had outright forgotten he'd already used this idea. Though considering that it's the exact same item, it doesn't seem that likely.

Kaga was the one to make the joke about axe lady throwing axes at people all over Jugdral. Not sure I like that myself, as I like thinking of axe lady as a Verdane centric local spirit rather than a transcontinental being. If she's just casually existing all over the continent then why isn't she helping out more to fight the Lopt Sect. We could do with a lot more Brave Axes lady >.>

Although, come to think of it - this *is* the first first map that takes place inside of a village, isn't it? The Akaneia maps tend to be more zoomed out (like FE1's first map being the entire island of Talys), not to mention Genealogy, and Gaiden's fights take place on open terrain, in dungeons, or at fortresses. So I suppose this only "standard FE fare" in hindsight.

First Gaiden map is just outside Ram Village. You can even go back inside the village boundary in the gameplay if you really need to use a healing tile.

I can only say that Lester was unmarried in this run. My uneducated guess is that the game doesn't check for the correct flag ("Lester is married to Patty, Fee, or Lene"), so it's played by mistake, and because there is no lover to insert into the scene, the game defaults to the name "Sigurd" and, for whatever reason, Vendor Guy's portrait.

It would be interesting whether the scene would play if Lester was married to Patty/Fee/Lene, and what would happen if he was married to Nanna/Larcei/Tinni (maybe both scenes would play?).

Still, wouldn't Lester have a solo unmarried scene written? I know freaking Jeanne of all people does because it's the only way to actually discover in game that she's specifically Eve's (or Eva's or Alva's, which ever of them) daughter. But a scenario in which Jeanne both exists, lives and unmarried is extremely niche. All that being said, that there's a fuck up somewhere in the ending is hardly surprising. Like, genuinely, how many possible endings does Genealogy have? There are so many different variables between who is the child of whom and who is or isn't married to whom to inherit what, there must be at least thousands of different possible combinations of endings that are possible, some of which have probably never even been seen.
