  1. I think I understand now why you've completely ignored every post that said you were pretentious (except for the ones you responded to with complete pretentiousness). I'll do the same with yours now.
  2. About as ambiguous as assuming I'm an idiot that can't understand your posts, rather than understanding that I flat out said it's nonsensical (definition: makes no sense). "based on your posts, it seems as though you don't give a shit about the stories in fe games, even if one was objectively amazing. Why are you bothering to argue about story elements in the first place?" "lol all the fe games stories suck" Ah yes, your post may seem to make sense to you, but it came off as idiotic to me. I'll explain my point in your language: post make no sense to nobody but you My point remains: there's no such thing as a bottom standard for bad stories and story elements.
  3. It's fantastic that you enjoy Awakening despite all its flaws. It may not seem so from my posts, but I still enjoyed my time with Awakening and would play that against over most other strategy games, because it's still Fire Emblem, and Fire Emblem rocks. I love this series, and I want it to get even better. I point out the flaws in the game because I want the series to learn from its shortcomings and get even better in the future, not because I hate the game. There's absolutely nothing wrong with loving this game; it's clear it was made with all the earnest and heart of the IS crew; it's not a cynical cash grab like, say, the Transformers movies. I'm all for people enjoying and loving the hell out of this game.
  4. Jesus christ dude can you get more pretentious Not what you said. Way to dodge my point in order to needlessly and meritlessly bash on the other titles. I challenge you to point out to me where I said "I don't understand what this means", rather than "your post is literally nonsensical and stupid" Enough that it can't be quantified with a meaningless number rating system.
  5. It's a statistical known fact that Awakening gave 53% of its players PTSD because of its gameplay What balance? You just bloody said you skip all the optional story content in Awakening and hand waved its story because it's not a book. There's as much balance there as a feather on one side and a rock on the other. If Awakening had top notch story and character quality, it seems to me like you still wouldn't really care. I know what your point was. My point was that trying to quantify subjective opinions as arbitrary numbers, even if its as some wonderful hyperbole that you love to use, is completely nonsensical. It's ridiculous to claim that there's some kind of bottom standard when it something as complicated as huge stories. There can (emphasis on this word) always be something worse. Par for the course
  6. I was referring to the "one support level per pair per chapter" rule. Fe6-8 adhere to this, Fe9-10 adhere to this, and Fe12 adheres to this.Geneology is just a straight not married or married system, so I'm not really counting it. Refer to this:
  7. I only read books for the gameplay Because it's not like the series has had a reputation for having good stories to go along with its gameplay. Would you prefer the game if it forgone all sense of optional story content in favor of pure gameplay? This doesn't even make sense. Uh, by the fact that literally every other FE game with supports holds this rule?
  8. Saying "no they aren't" is not a sufficient counterargument in the slightest. And while Fe7's coincidences are well integrated into their character development, it's important to note said characters are also recruited MUCH more naturally. Awakening literally pulls out of its ass half hearted ways to recruiting characters. Panne just shows up and says "oh emmeryn helped me before, I"m here to help", Henry appears out of nowhere and joins for no real goddamn reason (you have to dig through his supports to find out why, which is ridiculous), and Basilio/Flavia's recruitments are literally asspulls. Contrast that with the likes of Hawkeye, who has an ultimate purpose for appearing/helping and Athos, who is built up to be your clutch ally. Even the ones that appear seemingly out of nowhere (Fiora, Erk, Harken) have their own goals distant from your party's. Awakening takes the easy way out and has every recruitable character center around your party's. You have to rescue someone, someone doesn't like their side and defects, or they just appear out of the air and help are the only 3 recruitment methods in Awakening (only exception is libra). Fe7 gives most of the characters their own goals and intentions, and uses coincidences to further their development. Awakening really doesn't try and just shoves them in there for waifu arguments.
  9. I respectfully disagree, I find Fe7's supports to be well worth the effort. Fe7's cast are far more three dimensional than Awakening's anime stereotypes. And the coincidental thing is a commonly used trope that doesn't really even hurt 7's case. And while some supports might have been better if the turn count was lower, your counterargument doesn't really affect the point of my post. Saying that all the supports should be considered simultaneously is ridiculous. It's through those multiple playthroughs that you learn more of the character bit by bit; it lends credence to the strength of the way 7/8's characters work. In Awakening, you could unlock A support after A support, and they mean nothing. While most of the blame is to be put on the terrible writing/characters of the game, I believe the support structure put more unnecessary burdens on them than there should be.
  10. This allowed for much stronger support conversations in 7/8 though. Getting an A rank support with a lot of character development, then getting another one right afterwards with the same character would drastically cheapen the gravitas of both of them. Awakening sacrifices story elements for gameplay in this respect, as there's no good way to get significant character development that means something when you're able to just get all of them simultaneously. The S supports don't help much either; they're just a tool used to unlock the children characters and clearly didn't have much thought put into them.
  11. I disagree. I find SD's art style to be far, far more interesting and unique than Awakening's (barring the full body artworks, which don't even adhere to the game's art style). There's a sort of regal look to it that makes it stand out, whereas Awakening's is just typical anime style.
  12. Huh? What are you talking about? The Call of Duty series (at least until Ghosts) is both a commercial and critical success, with Modern Warfare 3, usually considered to be the one that played it the safest, has a whopping 88 on Metacritic. Not to mention that every Cod game has sold millions, so your argument fails because Metacritic said so. tldr there's a double standard here for Awakening
  13. Well for one, the stories from the older games are far, far, far better than anything Awakening has. And while Fe4/5's gameplay are somewhat affected by "Super Nintendo Era Strategy Game Syndrome", their gameplay go much more hand in hand with their stories than Awakening's does.
  14. Nonono I"m not blaming you for anything, I'm just wondering out loud how a pheros discussion got in this thread in the first place. Why is she notable when, say, none of us know the name of that boss of the plegia escape chapter off hand? That was the point of my "who the hell is pheros" line. Cut to Fe7/8 where a good number of the bosses were pretty well done, even the ones that only appear for one chapter. Fe7 even does some clever things with its bosses, where someone like Zagan actually affects the gameplay with his personality, in that he will actually rush you. Someone like Uhai constitutes much more empathy than the completely forgettable Yen'fay (even though Yen'fay is hyped up throughout the game, and Uhai's first mention is literally his first appearance), Then from Fe8 you've got bosses like Pablo, who actually attacks you from behind in the next chapter a later chapter. Awakening wishes it was as creative as those two games.
  15. It really is sad that Pheros was actually brought up in a discussion about decently written villains. Why? Because she's a woman? Why don't we talk about the villain from the chapter where you recruit Sayri? He was such a memorable villain.
  16. Even though I consider Awakening to be a pretty big disappointment for the FE series, I would still rather play it than most other games. Keep in mind that since this is primarily a Fire Emblem forum, Awakening is usually held to the series standard, not video games overall.
  17. Are there any scanlations of Geneology's manual? I would be surprised if there weren't any mention of the mechanic there.
  18. It sort of does, but of course it's all mitigated by the fact that all you have to do is press xxxxxxx. And past FF games usually required you to strategize on things like bosses. Would you like to guess which single button you have to press to beat bosses in XIII? (disclaimer: this probably doesn't work on optional mega bosses, but definitely does for the story ones)
  19. Cool beans. I like being in agreement.
  20. FFXIII has an auto-battle function that allows you to basically skip every battle you deem unworthy of playing or irritating (or hell, all battles). No other FF game has this. I hereby declare FFXIII to be the best FF game of all time due to this.
  21. It may not be the biggest factor, but it is pretty damn important to its cause. We see Selena discussing by-the-bys with other antagonists, we see her question her country's motives; we see her act as a character throughout FE8. If you cut out all those things and make her a boss introduced in the single chapter she appears in, almost any sense of impact of the character is lost. She's no longer a character we feel uncomfortable fighting with, she's now just a completely forgettable, one-off boss character with nothing to add. Guess who fits that category. And even if a character were decently written like Mustafa (which isn't a very particularly high bar), any sense of characterization is cut short by the fact that they're still only in one chapter. There's no time to build up the character. Adding Mustafa here and there in earlier chapters, like say holding slight resistance to Gangrel's increasingly maniacal orders would have been enough to set up Mustafa as a well characterized antagonist. Instead, he comes off as a jarring and weird juxtaposition to all the other completely fanatical Plegian soldiers.
  22. Goddamn is this what it's like to be called pretentious by Kanye West Do you claim this only for Fire Emblem or can it extend to any expansive video game series? Is Final Fantasy XIII better than Final Fantasy [insert older title here] because it feverishly directs you on everything you can do in the game, thus taking out unnecessary clutter?
  23. Nintendo doesn't seem to be what you call rational when it comes to their eshop stuff. How long was it again before they finally put earthbound in VC?
