  1. The Black Knight is capable of warping to different locations instantaneously. The only use he would have for a horse would thus be in battle; however, because of the nature of his armor as well as his inherent strength, riding a horse would likely prove a hindrance. Any steed or vehicle would likely be the most suitable target for any assailant of the Black Knight because it would not be as well protected as its rider. Felling the horse would fell the Black Knight. This defeats the purpose of his donning impenetrable armor in that, by riding a horse, he would be creating an unnecessary vulnerability.

I do not, however, believe the aforementioned reasoning to be the most likely justification for the Black Knight lacking a mount in regard to the game’s writers. Leaving the Black Knight without a horse makes him a more suitable active antagonist for Ike who also does not ride a horse. Ike has no relation to the nobility or any formal army whilst most characters with their own mount share one or both of these relations. The Black Knight also lacks a direct relation to both the nobility and any formal army in that he does little in the way of active combat alongside other troops, at least whilst under the guise of the Black Knight. This gives both Ike and the Black Knight a more equal footing in terms of their relations to society, even if only on a superficial level.

While Ashnard is the final boss of Path of Radiance, the Black Knight is clearly intended to be the primary antagonist for the major duration of the game. The cinematic which plays upon the completion of chapter seven does much to evidence this possibility. Much like Zephiel in Fire Emblem 6, Nergal in Fire Emblem 7, and Lyon in Sacred Stones, the primary antagonist of Path of Radiance was most probably intended to be seen as a human with no reliance on any other person or animal. This trait, which one might tentatively consider to be an archetype, not only makes the character in question more relatable but it is also more likely to provoke an emotional reaction separate from that of triumph. This makes the story feel stronger and more engaging while still allowing a more epic endgame battle, or so the game creators would likely hope (Idoun is not a very impressive final boss aside from her appearance).

This is, of course, entirely speculatory on my part. It is entirely possible that the Black Knight’s lack of a mount is of no symbolic importance of all, but I have presented my perspective on the matter. This point of view is based off of similarities among the Fire Emblem games as well as games of other series.

  2. In this video, posted last night, Strike from Fire Emblem 7 appears to be one of the tracks which plays during the stage Castle Siege. The scene in which stage Castle Siege is being played begins three minutes and thirty-nine seconds into the video. The music does, however, appear to be a separate recording placed alongside footage of the game being played, if that is of any relevance.

  3. By the way, I once saw a video on YouTube where a guy defeated all of the Greil mercenaries. When I went to watch it again, I couldn't find it. Anyone have a link?
    You may be referring to
video, or at least a similar video.

I have never tried to defeat the Greil Mercenaries so I cannot offer any tested suggestions.

  4. I just learned that L'Arachel's name is not voiced on Nintendo of America's official website. Renais, however, is voiced and approximates to "ɹɛneɪ" (~ Reh-nay) in the IPA (I don't know the IPA so I guessed at the spelling from a Wikipedia article).... I do not know French but, to me, this pronunciation sounds French (sans the American accent). Unless there are other European languages which pronounce "ais" in this way, and allow use of L apostrophe in the beginning of words or names, then this might be usable as confirmation that the French language is in fact the basis of fictional names in Sacred Stones.

  5. I found the equivalent article on Nintendo of Europe's Spanish website and, like the UK page mentioned by Vincent, it makes no mention of a Fire Emblem release. Fire Emblem does not turn up in a game search, but that is also the case on the French version of the website so the game databases are, presumably, not up to date. It might be worth e-mailing Nintendo of Europe to confirm which countries will see the release of Fire Emblem 10. I agree with Aether that the game is likely to be released in the UK, and other parts of Europe, despite the inconsistency of the news regarding the title. It would be illogical for the Fire Emblem 10 to be withheld from the UK considering the game has already been translated into English.

  6. Ok, thank you. I will pass on Enterbrain's guide and buy Nintendo Power's Path of Radiance Guide alongside Prima's Radiant Dawn guide.

I don't check, but usually get my Lord to 20 as soon as I can and then keep them out of the way until they promote.
How much faster do you allow your lord to level up in comparison to your other characters? My lord usually ends up with the most level ups a few chapters in, but after that the lord's growth decelerates because I try to ensure my lord reaches level twenty just before being promoted.
  7. Favorite Food or Drink: My father exposed me to a wealth of foods from various cultures while we taught ourselves how to cook. In a general sense, I particularly enjoy curry, scallops, sushi, and lamb. My experience with drinks is much narrower with my favorite being apple juice.

Interests: My interests include anime, manga, video games (specifically tactical games and visual novels), philology (as the study and understanding of languages, aside from linguistics), and a few other things mentioned in my profile.

    Orientation:

    Background:

    Religious View:

    Favorite Color:

Favorite TV Shows: I watch a limited assortment of anime, the Discovery Channel, and the History Channel.

Favorite Books: I have most enjoyed the novels Red Mars, Dune, The Catcher in the Rye, Three Kingdoms, and Chasm City. I own many worthy nonfiction books as well but nothing that I would classify as a favorite.

    Favorite Movie:

Favorite Quotes: I feel compelled to second Hikarusa's choice of, "Moldy onions!" as a favorite quote. That and, "Ike, hero of Crimea, leader of the Greil Mercenaries, and father of Sothe's children," have proven... memorable....

Political Views: I have no political affiliations. Because I am a permanent resident, and thus cannot vote, I have not kept as well informed of current political happenings as would probably be in my best interest.

    Relationship Status:

    Dislike:

Your Hero or Heroes: I admire many fictional characters but I would consider Paul Atreides of Frank Herbert's Dune and two characters from Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy: Nadia Chernyshevski and Saxifrage Russell to be the most fun and worthwhile characters to look up to. As for real people, I have found Alexander Arguelles to be a fantastic academic inspiration. I do not subscribe to some facets of his perspective on life and education as a whole, but that doesn't detract from his being an admirable and worthy role model.

  8. You probably recognize Sothe's likely inclusion in Brawl from this thread.

Because Lyn has been confirmed as an unplayable character I hope for any representative of Fire Emblem who is light on his or her feet. From what I recall reading about hands on impressions of Super Smash Bros. Brawl at the Entertainment For All Exposition, Ike was reported to be a heavy character similar to Link in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The Smash Bros. Dojo website also refers to Ike as a "heavy character." Marth has always been my best character in Super Smash Bros. Melee so I hope for another light and agile character, especially if Ike remains a slow and heavy fighter for Super Smash Bros. Brawl's final release.

Then again, were a distinctly new character such as Micaiah included, I might reconsider my style of play. Likewise, if Ike remains the only representative of Fire Emblem (I hope not...) then I will probably I will do my best to adjust to him.

  9. Thank you for your responses.

I feel safe trusting Aurion's experience with Prima and will buy Prima's Radiant Dawn guide when I next have a good opportunity to do so. I also appreciate your linking me to the artwork for Fire Emblem 1 and Fire Emblem 4 but I investigated those particular pages a few months ago. I had initially hoped to obtain the original books but I lack the knowledge and experience to go about finding them from a reputable source.

In regard to the guide for Fire Emblem 7, I found the boss strategy outlined on page 99 to be utterly useless.

As for using guides to while playing games, I am inclined to agree that the games are more fun and engaging if the stress of surviving unexpected reinforcements is present. While I played Sacred Stones unaided, I made use of GameFAQs to check how each character can be recruited in Path of Radiance.

I'll pose a similarly related question: Do you check ahead to see when the main lord, or lords, of a game are forced to promote? Do you think the Fire Emblem games to clearly indicate when a lord will be forced to promote? I don't have a problem raising a lord up to level twenty before he or she is required to promote; however, I find the lack of a clear forewarning in this matter a nuisance because I might raise a lord to level twenty significantly earlier than is necessary. Roy of Fire Emblem 6 is a good example; he promotes incredibly late in the game and becomes which can leave the player with an unusable lord (assuming the player wishes to reserve experience for other units) for many chapters.

If you have something to add which does not directly pertain to the questions I have asked, feel free to post your thoughts.

  10. If you wish to make further progress in your game, then follow these instructions:

    1. Go to Start > Run (or press Windows Key + R).

    2. Type: "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\" without the quotation marks.

    3. Press OK.

    4. In the new window, double click on HOSTS.

    5. Choose to open the file with Notepad.

    6. At the bottom of the document, type: "127.0.0.1 serenesforest.net" without the quotation marks.

    7. Save the file.

  11. I love to own game artwork. I have kept my comprehensive Pokémon Crystal walkthrough, and I bought a new Ocarina of Time guide when Ocarina of Time was re-released for the GameCube, because I enjoy occasionally poring over the artwork. I was also sure to quickly pick up new copies Persona 3 and Growlanser: Heritage of War. I would be displeased with myself if I had waited to buy used copies only to find the original art books then unavailable. I am aware that in these latter two cases the art books could be considered marketing gimmicks, but I enjoy having them. While we were trying to determine conclusively which game modes of Fire Emblem 7 allow the player to obtain the Silver Card, I checked my old Fire Emblem 7 guide for confirmation. The guide did not elucidate how the Silver Card is obtained but I was reminded of the plethora of artwork in the book.

I am curious as to the quality of the artwork in the other Fire Emblem guides. Nintendo Power’s 160 page guide for Path of Radiance is currently selling at $8.00 on Amazon.com with Prima’s 224 page guide for Radiant Dawn selling at $13.60. I am also able to purchase Enterbrain’s 287 page Radiant Dawn guide for approximately $20.00. Can anybody with any of these guides attest to their quality in regards to both the information presented and the amount of artwork? My only experience with Prima is with their Ocarina of Time walkthrough (and their horrendously outdated StarCraft) which lacked large pieces of artwork, and I have no experience with Enterbrain. I would check the Radiant Dawn guide in a store but the only hard copies I have yet come across have been wrapped in plastic.

I appreciate all responses and or input regarding this matter. I do not want to buy a guide only to find that all of the artwork has been relegated to small empty spaces.

So as to make this thread relevant to more forum members than just me, I pose the following question: what do you make of using guides to play through Fire Emblem? Do you check enemy placements and reinforcements, or how to recruit characters, before starting a chapter or do you figure it out as you play? I played Fire Emblem 7 using my guide but I played through Sacred Stones entirely unaided (I was thus pleased to learn that there are no secret characters or chapters in Sacred Stones).

I am aware that a couple of art books for the older Fire Emblem games have been published in Japan. Has anybody on this forum been inspired enough to try obtaining any of them?

  12. Wow.... I'm going to take this as a joke. Please don't be offended. I'm not.

I don't mind being wrong as long as someone comes and does tell the truth.

I was under the impression that you may have felt I was representing you as uninformed, or trying to show you up, which was not my intention at all. It would seem that I had misinterpreted your response. No harm done.
  13. Wist, you made my life horrible by actually knowing what you were talking about.
I apologize, by no means was I intending to make you appear uninformed. It is not illogical that one would not see the differences between the two scripts unless they were put side by side. I am relatively familiar with what Arabic writing looks like because I once researched some of the world's major alphabets, but what I mentioned in the previous post is half of everything I know about the script. I have flirted with a random array of topics but, because I jump between so many interesting subjects, my base of knowledge for each of them is rather shallow.

Again, I am sorry if I have caused you disconcertion. Please don't allow that to inhibit what you may post or contribute in the future.

  14. I had thought that the Silver Card was available in Eliwood's Hard Mode. Upon checking my archaic save file in which I am at chapter 21 of Eliwood's Hard Mode, I found that I do not possess the Silver Card. There is the possibility that I missed it, but I find that unlikely (unless I was frustrated or experienced an unlucky incident of Matthew dying when he shouldn't have) considering how much of a perfectionist I am when playing Fire Emblem. I performed a brief search and found a few sources which suggest that the Silver Card be obtained in both Eliwood's and Hector's Hard Modes but none of those sources are trustworthy enough to depend on.

Battle Preparations is only five turns which is even worse if one intends to make use of the arena.

  15. Arabic and the Ancient Tongue are both cursive scripts (to a degree, the Ancient Tongue letters at least appear conjoined even if they wouldn't be written cursively) but because Arabic is written right to left, most of the curves and loops go the opposite direction of the Ancient Tongue. Arabic also makes use of dots while the Ancient Tongue makes use of none, sans periods.

    arabic45pxhlz1.png versus galldrexampleinvertedcova2.jpg

Most people probably wouldn't be able to recognize the difference without a direct comparison (Arabic might be a little closer to the Ancient Tongue if mirrored, actually) but I think it would be better to create and use an Ancient Tongue font regardless. An Ancient Tongue font would be more authentic. The letters in the Ancient Tongue directly transliterate into the English alphabet. One could use this

image as a guide (Vincent, you are absolutely amazing for having researched and discovered so much content which relates to Fire Emblem) for creating a font, if such a font has not already been created.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to create a scalable font. I once made a font for the kind of lettering used in character screens (the font used for names, like in this example (which I did not create), and for item names) but that was a while ago and the program I used was unsophisticated.

    EDIT 01 (19.01.2008):

I recall reading somewhere (I am not sure where) that the Ancient Tongue used in Radiant Dawn is different from that of Path of Radiance. Is this true? Do the two games use a different fictional writing system, or a different font?

It might be fun to learn to write in the Ancient Tongue. Because the Ancient Tongue directly transliterates into the English alphabet it would be very easy to use. The letters g, and possibly j, don't appear to flow but neither does the letter E. The symbol for capital letters (presumably it's for capital letters but I'll check that the next time I pick up the game) looks like it might take some practice to get used to, as do a few of the numbers. The characters does look too difficult to write or read though, assuming one has fair enough penmanship to compensate for the few characters which are very similar to each other.

When I feel the need to write notes to myself that I don't want other to be able to read I use another language; however, because I'm not fluent in any language other than English I invent quite a few of my own English loanwords. The Ancient Tongue would likely prove the most superior alternative alphabet because it would bypass this problem entirely. It is also prettier than other alphabets.

  16. You forgot Renault. Your biggest problem by far is going to be Guiding Rings. Do not skimp on picking up recruitment items for other kinds of units from chests. They will sell for a fair amount of money. If you play hard mode, the boss of chapter 19x (18x in Eliwood's story if you change your mind) possesses a Silver Card but you would have to steal it if you wish to use it. If you go to that chapter then you are going to have a little trouble anyways due to the large central portion of the map in which you cannot use magic.

I have never done an all magic playthrough so I am I cannot provide a first hand account of the money issue in regard to Guiding Rings. I have, however, completed an Eliwood and Marcus run (on Eliwood's normal mode). The biggest problem for me was ensuring that I was careful with which items I brought into a map due to my disallowing Merlinus from ever entering the field. Because you will have multiple healers, and nearly all of your characters will eventually be able to heal each other, you are probably not as likely to experience the same problem of rationing Vulneraries and Elixirs as I had (Cog of Destiny was a miserable experience).

  17. Where did you get your information from? It is entirely possible that my source was inaccurate. I used the article entitled "Average Max Level Stats FAQ" by "Salasar Elerital" on GameFaqs's Fire Emblem page. It mentioned tactician's bonuses, which I believe have been determined nonexistent, but the article was written in 2004 so I disregarded mention of the tactician bonus as a trusted myth of the time. I did, however, use the base stats, growth rates, and promotion gains listed in the article so as to calculate average stats myself as opposed to trusting the maths of the article's writer.

I appreciate your checking my information and calculations; I will amend the errors you mentioned, if I find that you are correct, and review the calculations I made more carefully.

    EDIT 01 (18.01.2008):

Upon checking the information you suggested to be incorrect against the information on Serenes Forest's Fire Emblem 7 page, it would appear that you are correct. I will check all my information against that which is provided by Serenes Forest, assuming this site is more likely to be accurate.

    EDIT 02:

I checked Dorcas's constitution against that of the game; you and Serenes Forest were indeed correct. I will add the correct information and calculations into my prior post right now so as to determine whether Raven's standing as an axe user is different from what I had initially concluded. Again, than you for alerting me to the fact that some of my information is incorrect.

    EDIT 03:

I still get an average speed of 10.4 for Dorcas. He joins at level 3 and therefore has 37 levels to go. His speed growth is 20 percent which will not result in speed capping before promotion. His speed increase is 7.4 (.2*37). Added to his base speed of 6, he will average at 10.4. I also still get an average speed of 18.2 for Bartre. His speed increase is 15.2 (.4*38) and, like Dorcas, will have no conflicts with capping the stat before promotion. When added to his initial speed Bartre is left with an average speed of 18.2. How did you come across your results? I may again be in error.

  18. If you wish to keep the image, you could consider resizing it as long as doing so wouldn't reduce the effect or quality of the signature to a detrimental degree. If you want to see what the signature looks like resized to fit within the specified dimensions you can upload the image and place the code linking to the image in a post, in this thread, instead of your signature. Someone here, or I, can resize the image for you so you can determine if you think it looks good enough or not. If so, you can use the resized image. If not, no harm done.

  19. You do realize that Raven can't even wield a simple Iron Axe without a penalty because of his atrocious 9 Con eliminating what little speed he has comparing to other heroes in the game, same applies for Oujay as well considering he to suffers a speed penalty as well as Raven because he too has 9 Con. Thus, he wasn't really meant to wield any axe IMHO. He was only meant to wield swords such as Regal Blade since he can only wield any other sword lower or equal to his Con. Unless you give him a Body Ring or two he shouldn't have any problem of wielding any axe especially Basilikos. However, those Rings could've been given to other people who desperately needs it.

EDIT 01 (18.01.2008): All information written in an “EDIT 01” category takes precedence over any related information in this post which does not fall into an “EDIT 01” category. This is due to incorrect information and calculations which were brought to my attention by Colm whom I must thank for bringing these errors to my attention as efficiently as he did. All amended information and calculated results are written under the “EDIT 01” sections. If further corrections are required, they will be written under “EDIT 02” sections and will take priority over both the original information and information written in “EDIT 01” sections.

    - End of edit. -

Raven’s superior speed far outweighs the constitution advantages that axe specific characters generally receive. On the theoretical level Raven’s inferior constitution should prove most disadvantageous for him, especially when using axes, but if one looks at the numbers it becomes evident that this is not the case. I have neglected supports entirely as they not only make the equations much more tedious to perform but many people use different teams and may create a team with the intention of maximizing the support options available with a particular cast of characters. Raven gains hard mode bonuses which will further improve his usefulness early on but leave him the same in terms of speed by the time he is a level 20 Hero. I have not included hard mode bonuses in these calculations. Geitz and Harken are the only competitors who would also be affected by hard mode bonuses. Lastly, before the central point of this post, Raven receives a constitution bonus of 1 upon promoting so he can wield an Iron Axe without any penalties by the time he is permitted to use axes.

EDIT 01: Raven’s constitution starts at 8, not 9. After promoting his constitution is 9 which leaves him one point below what is necessary to wield an Iron Axe without any penalty.

    - End of edit. -

Dorcas first joins at level 3 with 6 speed. His speed growth rate is 20 percent and he received no speed upgrade upon promotion. Bartre joins at level 2 with 3 speed and a 40 percent speed growth rate. Being of the same class as Dorcas, his speed is also entirely neglected upon promotion. Dorcas has 16 con while Bartre has 13.

EDIT 01: Dorcas starts with a constitution of 14, not 16.

    [/i]- End of edit. -[/i]

Upon reaching level 20 (and becoming level 1 Warriors due to the lack of a speed increase during promotion), Dorcas’s speed will average at 9.4 while Bartre’s speed will average at 10.2. Compare this to Raven who joins at level five with 13 speed and possesses a speed growth rate of 45 percent. At level twenty he will average at 19.75 which fits comfortably with his cap of 20. Upon promoting into a Hero, when he can make use of axes, Raven will have an average of 21.75 speed. This more than makes up for his lower constitution in comparison to Dorcas who has a promoted constitution of 18, and Bartre, with a promoted constitution of 15. As level 20 Warriors, Dorcas and Bartre will average at 13.4 and 18.2 speed respectively while Raven, as a level 20 Hero, will easily max out at his cap of 26. This leaves him with superior speed, in comparison to Dorcas and Bartre, using any axe.

EDIT 01: Dorcas’s constitution after promoting is 16, not 18. This further weakens Dorcas’s speed when using high level weapons but has no adverse effects when he uses more common kinds of axes.

    - End of edit. -

Geitz proves stiffer competition in that he, with his starting level of 3, starting speed of 13, and speed growth rate of 40 percent, will average at 19.8 speed upon reaching level 20. Due to his low constitution of 13, however, he will not reach the same speeds as Raven (who will exceed Geitz by at least 3 speed if both characters reach their average stats). One must also keep in mind that Raven will usually cap his speed before reaching level 20 which means that he will further exceed the speeds attainable by Geitz before reaching his cap.

EDIT 01: If both Geitz and Raven reach their average speed then Raven will have an advantage of 2 speed, not 3 speed, with any axe.

    - End of edit. -

Dart is a fair character. He begins at level 8 with 8 speed and has a 60 percent speed growth. His constitution, however, is only one more than that of Raven and his skill growth is only 20 percent as opposed to Raven’s 40 (and Raven starts with 3 higher skill at three levels below Dart). Dart will reach 15.2 speed at level 20 and promote into a Berserker with 16.2 speed (therefore still overshadowed by Raven’s speed which will be about 6 more, minus 3 factoring in the change on constitution). As a level 20 Berserker, Dart will have is apt to max out his speed of 28 which is 2 superior to Raven (4 including promoted constitution differences). Dart will, however, average at 13.4 skill as a level 20 Berserker (including his promotion gain of 1) whereas Raven will reach 27 by the time he is a level 20 Hero (again, this included his promotion gain of 2).

EDIT 01: After promoting, Raven loses 4 speed to Dart in terms of their constitutions, not 3. He therefore has an initial advantage of 2 speed instead of 3. If both characters reach their average speeds, which would cap at 28 for Dart and cap at 26 for Raven, Dart enjoys an inherent speed advantage of 4.

    - End of edit. -

If Dart proves to have decent skill then he will most likely be a superior choice of an axe wielder than Raven. Dart is most hindered by his inherent lack of skill which, if stat gains are unfavorable, may prompt the player to drop him for a more accurate character. If Dart works well (and I have had a Dart who turned out to be extraordinarily useful) then he is a great candidate to be the primary axe user but Raven is usually going to be more reliable (I have only promoted Dart that one time he was not missing every other attack).

EDIT 01: I have yet to check the numerical difference in accuracy between the two characters. I have also yet to check how poor Dart’s accuracy will be, on average, while he is a Pirate. I will do this shortly as it may or may not affect how often a player may choose to drop him from his or her ranks.

    - End of edit. -

EDIT 02 (19.01.2008): When Dart is first recruited (with 8 skill and 3 luck), his accuracy with the Iron Axe is 92.5 percent and his accuracy with the Steel Axe is 82.5 percent. When Dart is an average level 1 Berserker (with 10.4 skill and 7.2 luck), his accuracy with the Iron Axe is 99.4 percent and his accuracy with the Steel Axe is 89.4. When Raven is an average level 1 Hero (with 19 skill and 7.25 luck), his accuracy with the Iron Axe is 116.625 and his accuracy with the Steel Axe is 106.625. That is a difference of 17.225 (which the difference between an 85 percent hit rate and a 68 percent hit rate). Dart is therefore relatively disadvantaged in terms of his hit rate, depending on the avoid of enemy units.

    - End of edit. -

Hawkeye begins with 15 speed, at level 4, with a speed growth of 25 percent and a constitution of 16. By level 20 he will average at 19 speed. In comparison to Raven’s speed of 26, Hawkeye loses by one point when considering each unit’s constitution. Hawkeye will also have less skill than Raven and is also likely to slightly lose out in strength. Dart is a great Berserker if he is lucky with his skill. Hawkeye is usable and may be on par with Raven if one considers his HP advantage (which narrows significantly as Raven reaches level 20) and 15 percent critical bonus. Hawkeye will start with a higher axe level which will probably make him a better choice if the player wishes to use Basilikos (which I do not think is entirely necessary).

EDIT 01: Hawkeye begins with 11 speed, not 15 speed. Therefore, he will average at 15 speed upon reaching level 20. When each unit’s constitution is considered, Raven’s speed exceeds that of Hawkeye by at least 4 and at most 10 (with the Iron Axe).

    - End of edit. -

Raven is thus superior to every character specifically made to wield axes, in regard to speed, excluding Dart, Hawkeye, and Hector (the latter two of which are near evenly matched). Raven or Hawkeye would both make decent replacements for Dart should Dart find himself incapable of hitting anything although I would personally choose Raven. Keep in mind that Raven has access to two weapons of the weapon triangle and an thus find an advantage in any fight affected by the triangle given the right reaver weapon is used (in this case, the Swordreaver or Swordslayer) which will both weigh Raven down by 3). Hector is obviously a good axe user but if a player is looking for variety in his or her team then it would be beneficial to have another axe user. This is especially true in Hector’s route in which Hector’s promotion is delayed significantly.

EDIT 01: Hawkeye is no equal to Raven unless one greatly favors his 15 percent critical bonus and slightly superior HP of 60 in comparison to Raven’s worthy 54.75.

    - End of edit. -

The other candidates for axe users lie with Harken, the Paladins, and the Generals. Generals are slow units which does not fit into my playing style of spreading across a map and then quickly converging on troublesome spots. If you are a player who instead opts to steamroll across the map with a strong central front then I will draw up comparisons between Wallace, Oswin, and Raven (making the assumption that the player didn't promote Wallace until he reached level 20).

Harken joins at level 8 with 17 speed, a speed growth of 40 percent, and a constitution of 11. By level 20, Harken will average at 21.8 speed (at 4 below that of Raven, the slight advantage in constitution is negligible.

EDIT 01: When considering each units correct constitutions, Raven exceeds Harkens speed by 2.

    - End of edit. -

Kent, Sain, and Lowen are the primary usable Paladins (for the record, Marcus will average at 15.75 speed with a constitution one higher than that of Raven and Isadora will average at 25.5 speed but is hindered by her horrible constitution of 6, 4 below that of Raven). Kent, with his starting speed of 7 and speed growth of 45 percent will max at 24 speed as a level 20 Paladin. His constitution will be 11, and he is thus at a disadvantage to Raven. Sain, with his starting speed of 7 and speed growth of 40 percent will average at 23.6 speed (including the promotion bonus of 1) and a constitution of 11, again less effective than that of Raven. Lowen, with his starting speed of 7 and speed growth of 25 percent will average at 17.75 speed (including the promotion bonus of 1) and again, a constitution of 11 which leaves him inferior to Raven.

EDIT 01: For Kent and Sain, I will use the default starting speeds the characters are given if the player does not play through Lyn’s mode. Kent’s starting speed is 8, not 7. Lowen’s constitution after promotion is 12, not 11, as his base constitution is 10. Lowen’s speed growth is 30 percent, not 25 percent. Kent’s average final speed is still above his cap of 24, even considering his starting at level 5, and Sain’s final average speed is 22.4 with the same considerations as used for Kent. Considering their constitutions, Raven final average speed will equal that of Kent, exceed that of Sain by 2, and exceed that of Lowen by 5.

Raven is one of the most reliable axe users in the game, and the second fastest alongside Hector who will end up with about 21.65 speed and a constitution of 15 (which leaves the two nearly dead even). If Dart is lucky with his skill stat then he will undoubtedly be the best axe user in the game. However, Dart is difficult to use and may need to be dropped if he skill stat does not increase favorably. Hawkeye has his own advantages and disadvantages so a player may choose to use Hawkeye instead of Raven of doing so better suits his or her playing style.

EDIT 01: Kent’s average speed is also on par with that of Raven and Hector. Hawkeye is not, however, as good an alternative to Raven as I had previously determined.

    EDIT 01:

It is worth mentioning that Raven’s most prominent setback is his lack of defense and resistance (with a 25 percent growth rate and a 15 percent growth rate, respectively). His HP makes up for this to a degree but he is not as hardy as Hector and, to a degree, Kent. Raven’s defense is slightly superior to that of Dart. Raven’s resistance is nearly exactly on par with that of Dart.

I may still have made some slight errors or miscalculations although I hope that is not the case.
