  1. I did not intend to cause offense or to provoke anger. I asked for you to elaborate on your post, which you did; you had no obligation to respond to my question. I had no way of knowing that you had intentionally refrained from elucidating your reasoning, but what's done is done. I did not seek to make any judgment of your person because I do not know you, nor would I have sought to contest your opinion because, on a personal matter like this, everyone has their own justifiable reasoning dictated by personal experience. It would appear I might do well to avoid querying one's personal stance on any matter in the future.

  2. I don't just HATE books. I LOATHE reading altogether. Why am I on a forum? Because I only loathe book reading. All books. The creator of books can go to hell before he creates them for all I care, just write everything down on a single piece of paper or something. Books suck.
Do you have any particular reason for taking this position? It seems a waste to generalize all books as loathsome when there is such a wealthy variety of reputable literature of all sorts available, especially in this day and age.
  3. I would not be so quick to make such an assumption.

I suspect coolguyvaters may be a laguz seeking vengeance.

technically since it's a game and there's no human to hear the slang term, it's ok to say because it doesn't offend anyone
Ranulf: Oh, knew that, did you? Well then, let me tell you something else. When we use the word "human", we mean it much the way you beorc do when you call us "sub-human".

Ike: Really? It's an insult to be called human? I'm glad you told me. I would never have guessed.

Ranulf: I should warn you, if you run across any laguz who call you that, be careful. They are no friend of yours.

  4. I am curious as to whether any members of this forum play any recommendable free-ware games. Every now and again I quite enjoy playing a game that is short and simple; trying something new without having to make a purchase can lead to some fun or worthy experiences.

    - Within a Deep Forest - Within a Deep Forest is a platformer in which the player commands a living bouncy ball. The gameplay is simplistic in itself but as one progresses through the game, the ball can learn the ability to transform into different balls with their own unique properties. The player navigates treacherous terrain from an array of environments, as one would expect from a simple platformer. The creator of Within a Deep Forest, Nicklas Nygren, has developed multiple other free games (and is expected to develop a WiiWare title). I do not have any personal experience with his other games (although I have read only positive comments regarding Knytt), but I would encourage anybody with some free time (and no intention of studying for exams in the immediate future) to give Within a Deep Forest a try.

    Relevant Wikipedia article.

    - Narcissu - Narcissu is a freeware visual novel available in both Japanese and English (its developer, stage-nana, approved of the game's independent translations into English, Chinese, and Korean). Narcissu follows two terminally ill hospital patients as they seek to determine if their curtate lifespans are of any value. The player makes no storyline decisions, there is only one plot line, but the story is well presented (despite a few negligible medical inconsistencies); I read the game in one sitting. Narcissu is not a dating simulator, nor does it contain any adult oriented material; it is an emotional short story. Lastly, if of any relevance, my first avatar was derived from this game.

The Narcissu Wikipedia article contains spoilers regarding the story, I recommend against reading it if you are interested in the game and wish to enjoy the story in its entirety. - Relevant Wikipedia article.

Is anybody inclined to suggest an enjoyable independent game or two (or more)? Alternatively, if I have managed to spark anybody's interest in one of the above titles, do you believe I justly represented the title of your pick?

    EDIT (25.08.2008):

    I fixed a grammatical error.

  5. ....

I was not partial to Elite Beat Agents (and I would assume Ouendan and the relatively similar Ontamarama), but my experience with the game is limited to one rather short play session. I might consider the game as a fair gift. What would any member here predict the minimum age threshold for enjoying Elite Beat Agents to be?

I have never played StepMania but I have seen Dance Dance Revolution being played in an arcade a couple of times. Playing the game well appeared to be a difficult and worthy feat.

  6. Do you like The Catcher in the Rye? I found The Catcher in the Rye the only mandated high school literature I enjoyed enough to warrant my purchasing my own copy.

Kiryn, I have never heard of the Maximum Ride series but a scan of a relevant Wikipedia article reveals that it is quite popular.

  7. FE Planet has a healthy sprite archive but I don't believe that they have custom sprites (I am not very familiar with the site so I may be wrong). For your particular request, this or this sprite sheet may or may not be of use. I'm sorry that I cannot be of more help in this matter, but some other members of this forum are much more knowledgeable on this subject than I am and are likely in a favorable position to help you locate, or create, an Ike sprite.
  8. Magic tomes are quite light in comparison to weapons. If one chooses to make use of Sanaki it is not unrealistic to expect her to gain enough strength so as not to suffer a deprecation of speed, assuming she is given proper attention; at least, in my opinion. Without such special attention, however, the combination of her initially low strength and speed will very much reduce her potential usefulness. Soren was in a similar situation in Path of Radiance but Sanaki at least has a fair strength growth rate (and can more easily take advantage of bonus experience points). Sanaki is, as you say, screwed if she is nonchalantly cast into the battlefield.

  9. In your particular case, yes. If you intend to keep the exact same sprite which you are using then you will need to create your own background color, one that is not used in the sprite (I habitually opted for pink when I used Microsoft Paint because that is one of the colors that StarCraft used as a transparent color), around the sprite. It looks like you are using a sprite with fewer colors than the original (if you compare your sprite against this example). If you do want to keep your original sprite, however, we can help you draw around the sprite with a foreign color and change the rest of its background color to match.

  10. I play Japanese games on my Japanese Wii, but the frame rate problem is affecting my North American console which I use only to play North American games. Neither console has been modded. Looking back at my introductory post, my presentation appears unclear; I will amend it.

The Fourth Fox, thank you also for replying. I think I can at least take solace in the fact that the Wii is not known to perform like this. It looks like I would do well to draft a letter to Nintendo about this concern.

  11. If you are using Microsoft Paint then you will need to set the background color of the main image to match the background color of the sprite you intend to place on the main image. You would then need to enable transparency before pasting the sprite on the main image. You are in the unfortunate position of having a sprite which makes use of the same color as is used for the sprite's background color, black. I do not know if this was your intention, I will provide examples under the assumption that this conflict of color is accidental; if it was not accidental then you might have a little more work ahead of you (which is perfectly alright), but we can hopefully help you through the process. I am also operating under the assumption that you are using Microsoft Paint; if you are using another art program then this process will be greatly simplified but require more specific instructions.

Permit us say that you have the following sprite and background, respectively:

    Sprite and Background.

Both of these images should be opened in separate simultaneous sessions of Microsoft Paint.

You will first need to sample the sprite's background color. This is an unwieldy process but Microsoft Paint is severely inflexible. I choose to copy a section from the top left of the sprite (I have magnified its size to make for a more easily comprehended example):

    Color sample.

You can then expand the image on which you intend to place the sprite and paste the sprite's background color sample in the newly created space. In this case this step is not entirely necessary because I know that the color is pure black, but it is beneficial to use a sample of the original color in the even that it cannot be so easily determined.

    Pasted color sample.

Now, use the eyedropper tool and right-click on the pasted color; this sets Microsoft Paint's default background color to the sprite's background color. If performed correctly, your color palette should appear as such with the bottom of the two left hand colors the same as the sprite's background color (the top color is irrelevant).

You can now reduce the image to its original dimensions in order to cut out the pasted color and the extra white space. Go to the original sprite and copy the entire image, then return to the background image on which you intend to place the sprite. Paste the sprite with Ctrl+V. Your image should look something similar to this:

    Pasted sprite.

Select the indicated button, the bottom choice of the panel to the left. This will make any color which matches the image's background color invisible. Because both the sprite and the image now share the same background color, you should see a much more favorable result.

You can now move the sprite to the desired position --

    Desired position.

    and save the final result:

    All done.

I hope that this has proved helpful, but if you are using a different program than I had assumed, it may not be. If you have any concerns or further questions, do not hesitate to seek help from me or anyone else who may respond.

  12. Yes; games slow up unnaturally and I do not know why.

If multiple members follow suit with a similar post to yours then it looks like I will have something to be quite concerned about, but I think it is in my best interest to learn if the complication lies on my end or if it is a complication for Wii consoles in general. Thank you for your quick response, Metal Rabbit.

  13. For the past few months my Wii has been experiencing occasional, but rather dramatic, dips in frame rate, most notably while playing the games Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the two Wii titles I have been playing most frequently within this time period. Each individual instance of this problem lasts between approximately five to twenty-five seconds. As far as I can tell, this problem happens randomly and without relation to the level of activity taking place in whichever game is affected. It does, unfortunately, occur at least once during every play session of decent length (about half an hour) and may take place multiple times during an extended session. I have tried searching, via Google, for some possible explanations but I have yet to come across any information of substance.

Has anybody here experienced, or know of somebody who has experienced, such a problem? I do not know if this is an isolated occurrence or whether I could gain any useful insight by contacting Nintendo. I bought the Wii in question in November of 2006 so its warranty has since expired.

I must profess myself a bit disappointed. I own a Japanese Wii which has never exhibited this particular behavior but instead suffers from a disc drive which occasionally spins too slowly; this defect results in choppy cinematics and excessive load times. Luckily, if one could consider it fortuitous, this problem rears its head far less frequently than the complication I highlighted above.

Even if this problem cannot be resolved I hope to at least understand its nature. I greatly appreciate any relevant information or advice which anyone here may be able to offer. Likewise, if this is an isolated incident, I understand if nobody is able to offer a concrete explanation.

    Edit (30.03.2008):

The above text is slightly misleading. I have a Japanese Wii with its own problem, but I also have a North American Wii; it is this North American Wii which experiences the frame rate problems (but does not suffer from a defective disc drive).

  14. I primarily play as Marth but I do occasion, in order of proficiency, Ike, Lucario, and Pit.

    Edit (29.03.2008):

I forgot to mention that I have recently been experimenting with Zelda. Zelda is a frail character but she has multiple excellent attack options available to her.

  15. I am not particularly intelligent, I just have have no life. I very much appreciate your comments but I have always spent a lot of time experimenting with my writing and I have a habit of writing down and looking up every new word I come across. I am sure that there are many skills that you have all practiced well or activities in which you are proficient. In favor of my own studies, playing games, and watching anime, I have neglected my mathematics and dropped two sports in which I am now out of practice.

    For Fireman.

Back to the topic at hand: I have yet to welcome you to the forum, Kiryn. Welcome.

  16. The Fourth Fox, I am glad to have proven helpful. Keep in mind that while some of my explanations may cast an anime or manga in a more negative light than others, I only listed those which I enjoyed; I found all of those mentioned in my post worthy of attention to some extent.

I cannot recall how much time I spent amending that post; I would estimate that a thirty minute estimate, much like your projected prediction, would not be grossly inaccurate. I have little else to do today aside from some studying so that expenditure of time did not interfere with any other plans nor did it feel wasted in any respect. I scanned a few Wikipedia articles to confirm information on anime I have not watched for a fair amount of time which helped to accelerate the process.

Raven, when or if you have the time to write your reviews, I would be particularly interested in reading a slightly more thorough impression of Kanon. From what you have posted thus far, it seems that I might enjoy watching Kanon when I next have a vacant week.

  17. As per The Fourth Fox's request, for those who may be interested, I have elaborated on the anime and manga I mentioned in my first post in this topic and done my best to explain who may or may not enjoy each of them.

  18. I would assume that Kiryn is referring to thunder based magic's reduced might and accuracy. I personally have not found thunder's lesser power to be a detriment. I have found thunder magic's deficiencies, in comparison to the other anima magics, very slight and compensated by a noticeably superior critical hit rate. I can understand that some players may be averse to thunder magic because wind and fire are slightly more powerful (and a potential dislike for Ilyana's character herself), but I myself believe the disadvantages to be negligible. As coolguyvaters made note of above, thunder magic most certainly has a viable space carved out for it for any player who wishes to utilize it.

Edit (26.03.2008): I replaced an 'and' with 'are' because 'and' was ill fitting to the context.
