  1. I'm more for consistency with the other games of the era than I am for maintaining any kind of inferred power given to Elen through her class name. She's Guinivere's lady-in-waiting but other than that she doesn't seem to possess any real power. I won't change her Bishop class name, which surely implies more power than either Cleric or Priest.
  2. I feel no obligation personally to stick with Miledy. In the end, even with all things considered, I just don't like it very much. When you put it like that though, I'm fine with Milady if I can rewrite a line or two to account for potential confusion. Are people actually okay with this? With further thought, I don't mind taking this extra step personally. It would get old if it's constantly referenced all the time, but here's one idea for her first scene in chapter 2. Milady: All I want to know is what happened to Princess Guinivere! Ruud: Y-yes, milady... Milady: That's CAPTAIN Milady to you! Ruud: B-but, milady, I didn't mean-- Milady: CAPTAIN Milady! Ruud: Y-yes, Captain Milady. I'm certain the princess was in her room this morning, but she simply vanished... and then the dialogue goes as normal........ What do people think?
  3. That may be true, but even if we do say her class is different from Serra's, it's clearly the same class as Natasha from Sacred Stones at least, which was translated as "cleric" in the English versions. I'd rather maintain consistency within the GBA games than to later games. I don't really understand how it's misleading, since "cleric" just means "someone who works in a church."
  4. I already said many times, there is a reason. The problem is that Miledy is still very close to Milady, which is the same as the word milady, which is used in the script fairly frequently. Milledi appears to be almost a common name. It brings up quite a few blogs and Facebook pages and also appears to be the name of a wine. It's a different spelling with the same pronunciation. Also I frankly don't really care what people are used to. If I did I would have left all the names the same, which I didn't. And yes, Bartre does appear to be a real name. Searching it brings up a few Facebook pages and a street in Washington called Bartre Ct.
  5. So far today, I've just done some consistency checks. Apparently "Dragon Generals" were referred to in FE7 by Vaida as "Wyvern Generals" so that's what I'll be using. Since only one of them actually rides a wyvern, it felt necessary to add in a short explanation because of this. Will probably have to do some very slight dialogue rewrites later in the story to account for the distinction between wyverns and dragons, which the original patch completely ignored. Also the Temple of Seals should be Shrine of Seals. EDIT: Forgot to mention, I added a line to Jerrot's intro dialogue. This was to account for a later dialogue Jerrot has with Noah in which he mentions he joked with Treck that Noah liked the girl he was coaching. In reality though, he didn't, so um. I do want it to be perfectly clear that I'm not changing dialogue or adding in lines whenever I like though. It's just very occasionally to account for inconsistencies or a lack of clarity.
  6. dondon: If adaptation is completely arbitrary, then I guess it is. There's a little more to it than that though. The whole point though, is that Miledy is a fan-creation. If you're saying I should use Milady, then I would agree were it not confusing as all hell in-script. Let's say Miledy is a name. Even so I'd really like to differentiate it a TAD more from the word "milady." We've already drifted away from the official spelling by using Miledy, so surely Milledi isn't any worse. Will probably replace Millety with Milledi at this point by the way.
  7. A general remake/total upgrade would be cool... but since IS DIDN'T do this, any additional content from a fan remake is basically fanon. Which is fine in its right, but I'd like the original as well, just improved a little in playability. I dunno, I'd say it has a lot of easily fixed problems.
  8. The same reason I won't use Zealot. Basically if it exists on Google in any significant capacity I consider it a real name. If all I get are Fire Emblem pages then I think that's a problem. If it were an official localization and all that came up were Fire Emblem pages that'd be fine. But there is no official localization, so I don't think we should use arbitrary spellings that don't exist in the real world.
  9. You're right, but as I've said, I can't use that. I'm trying to adapt somewhat where appropriate without getting too far from the original pronunciations. Otherwise I wouldn't bother with Jerrot.
  10. It's an entirely arbitrary romanization and not a name. Certainly there's that too but my point was that ze isn't unfeasible either. It fails both tests I give for the fan spellings. It's not the original intention and it's not a name. Not really, they all appear to be real names. I really don't think whoever worked on Smash Bros. put that much thought into it. They also used "Stafy" rather than "Starfy" after all. Not unfeasible, but I personally don't want to name a character Sioux unless there's a little more justification.
  11. Eh, I'm going with Gharnef's reasoning rather than Celice's. My rules are pretty simple: FE7/Awakening names are definite go, NoJ and Smash Bros. names are "consider them but don't be bound by them." I don't think many people (myself included) want "Zelots," "Bath," or "Thite." I'm going with logic, real names when possible, and adapting a little bit where I deem necessary. It's nothing out of the ordinary. Anyway, I'll address the OP now I guess. Dieck > Deke (if we use Smash Bros. names, we're stuck also changing Rutger to Rutoga) I mentioned already but it's not only because it's in SSBB. I (and I'm apparently not the only one) find Dieck hideous. Zealot > Jerrot (how you get that from ゼロット (Zerotto) is a mystery) The je sound doesn't exist natively in Japanese so it's often approximated as ze. Los Angeles for example is ロサンゼルス and jelly is ゼリー so Jerrot from ゼロット is a perfectly feasible romanization. Oujay > Ogier (I see no problem with just keeping it as Oujay) But I do. Klein > Claine (it's one letter off Clarine, and gringe later proposed Klain, which I have less of an opposition for) I'm going with Klain, yep. Klein is pronounced completely differently and was likely written thinking that the ei would be pronounced like they are in Japanese. Miledy > Miredy/Millety (this is just change for the sake of change, it's no more accurate, and in the second case less accurate) Not exactly "just for the sake of change." I'm trying to "repair" some of the arbitrary romanizations present in the original translation and in the case of this one the "real name" should be Milady but I can't use that for obvious reasons. I'm willing to reconsider Millety though. What about these? Milledi, Miletti, Mileidy, Oro > Orlo (gringe thought it was "cooler") I could go with Orlowe I guess but Orlo appears to be a real name too. Ain > Ein (I'm not sure about this one, but it's an okay change at best) Basically a literal romanization to an adaptation. It's not like he's an important character so whatever really. Idoun > Idun (I personally think we don't need a mythological reference here) The real question is where did "Idoun" come from in the first place? The NoJ official spelling is "Idenn" which I think is okay but "Idun" is a mythological reference and I think it sounds a little better.
  12. So wait, are you saying I should call her a "priest"? Because her class name as it was in the patch was "sister." I already changed it to "cleric" which is pretty generic as it is and doesn't really imply much.
  13. Okay, fair enough then. I suppose there would be a hack like this, but I personally haven't seen a comprehensive balance hack for the base game. Improving growths without improving enemies further trivializes the endgame, for example.
  14. I am doing it, was just hoping for some input is all. If nobody likes the idea though, then that's fine. I'll just do it all myself like I was doing before. Because I've not heard of any that are generally recommended to overall improve the game. I've seen some that give your characters FE8-style growths, I've seen others that try to lighten the difficulty, and I've seen complete overhauls.
  15. Does the same problem not exist in HM? The earlier chapters are the hardest and the difficulty tapers off somewhat towards the end as you promote your dudes.
  16. That's cool, but very different from what I want to do. All I want to change is behind-the-scenes parameters. I don't want to add classes, characters, text, or anything of the sort. Basically I just want the base game with improved numbers. The game is fun and challenging up to a point and I think it could be made fun for the later parts with some parameter tweaks.
  17. I've not heard of this, so I'm guessing no one's done a comprehensive hack like this? I'm working on cleaning up the writing in the translation patch at the moment but this is something I'd like to do eventually as well (actually I successfully did it before, but a lot of parameters need to be changed). I see a lot of people saying no one should do FE6 hacks, but if it's to improve the base game, why not? It has a lot of problems. Once you know the game well, your character options for a good playthrough are somewhat limited and the later parts of the game are really a chore to get through. If the game can easily be made more fun and flexible, I think it should be. Most of these solutions are pretty easily fixed with Nightmare, but other stuff I'd love to do, maybe not so much. Stuff that's technically easy to do: -Character balance and diversification (IE making Deke have distinct differences from Ogier) -Class and item balance, probably using FE7 values -Increasing levels of enemies in later chapters and possibly giving them some better equipment to make them more deadly so the player isn't forced to trudge through endless weakling troops -Decreasing Crit bonus of Swordmasters and 'Zerks -Distributing a few more contested promotion items through earlier chapters Stuff that I could do in a perfect world but which are not so easy with Nightmare: -Making enemies spawn after enemy turns rather than after player turns to prevent cheap reinforcements. There is probably a way to do this seeing as this occurred in a few FE7 chapters but I have no idea where to begin obviously since there doesn't exist a Nightmare module for this -Adding otherwise unobtainable weapons (Fimbulvetr, Spear, Runesword, etc.) to the first Secret Shop, just for fun really. There are shop editor modules for Nightmare but there don't seem to be any for the Secret Shops. -Making the ratings a little stricter If you want to take a look at the character changes I'm considering, feel free. Will work on enemy levels and equipment later. http://www.mediafire.com/download/p181pazx96qp9m4/FE6characterbalancev2.xls Many characters have a change of only 5% to growths here or there. I know a change that small doesn't make a big difference, but it DOES make it a little more or a little less shaky. It was to de-emphasize certain weaknesses or emphasize certain strengths or differences. Allen for example lost 5% Skl and Spd while Lance lost 5% Str. Some characters were interesting to work with in order to diversify. Jerrot (Zealot) for example, has been given roughly equal or slightly lower bases when compared to Marcus, but has much higher growths, making him possibly more viable in the long run. He still shouldn't turn out as nicely as the unpromoted cavvies though. Other characters have had their usability increased or have been given a purpose. Lilina for example joins at Lvl 5 now and has increased stats to reflect that. Other characters like Wendy join at the same level as before, but she has much better base stats and growths hopefully making her a little more worthwhile. Sophia has the same terrible bases but has been given god-like growths to give her a niche some may enjoy. I also nerfed a few characters, such as Millety (Miledy) and Perceval. But anyway, enough outta me. Any comments are welcome. This is definitely something I'll be doing, unless someone better decides to of course, so I'm open to any opinions.
  18. Actually, this is exactly what I was thinking about doing. It would be a bit of a tedious process reinserting the text, but if that's what it takes, then hey.
  19. It's not like I'd know where to begin anyway so no worries there. ¯\(°_o)/¯ If the size is the only major issue that arises, and if it doesn't cause other issues, then I'll treat it as something that can't be helped. In other news, I was able to fix the dialogue issue! Apparently the text strings for this chapter were all moved up an index? I did the next couple chapters as well but have no save states for those chapters. >_>
  20. I figured it was something like that. I guess the solution then is to delete the data that FEditor tacks on to the end of the ROM? Don't know how to do that however.
  21. Interesting bugs, but any additional issues likely arose from the bugged IPS patch. Sorry guys, it gave me an error but I made the patch anyway. The error happened because the file has gotten too big but I don't know how to control it. I'm not adding enough text that it should be as big as it's gotten (actually, in many areas, I've trimmed the text down so it should be roughly the same amount of text overall). I attempted dumping the text from the edited ROM and inserting it into a (not quite) clean ROM, but that didn't help with size. Actually, it made it worse. I'll try to find a solution, but since I don't really know what I'm doing hacking-wise it could potentially take a while. It's not "filler". I've done translations of manga for around 8 years so I've learned a lot about translation in that time. Basically, I've found that the important point of translation is to take the spirit or purpose of the original text and adapt it as a native speaker might write it. This often means almost ignoring the wording of the original script. Let's consider: what's the point of this exchange between Zephiel and Hector? Basically a powerful king is taunting a defeated lord. There's no need to specifically say "no one crosses Bern's army and survives" in the English adaptation. His point is "we are powerful, you are weak" but how can that be written in natural English? Unlike Japanese, English frequently uses metaphors and comparisons, so I decided to go with the often used "weak little worm" and compare it to a boot. There's no one way to write it, but this is how I chose to. EDIT: Found a temporary workaround for the filesize issue. Apparently the IPS format is limited to 16 MB but UPS seems to have no such restriction so I'll use UPS for now. Of course a solution to the size issue would be ideal but I don't really know where to begin just yet and I don't have the time to dig into it this week. EDIT2: Also, although that dialogue in Chapter 4 repeats itself, waiting one more turn plays the proper dialogue as it should. I guess I'll continue with the writing and I'll work on a bug fix when I have more time to play around with hacking (or someone with more expertise can help). By the way, here's the UPS patch if you want to try again. Remember it's very much a work in progress so naturally many things aren't done yet. http://www.mediafire.com/download/bm3kays8gkchl5k/FE6upstest-7-17-2013.ups
  22. Hmm, not sure about support conversations. I haven't really touched them yet other than changing name spellings in the conversations. I'll see if the same happens to me. I'm aware of inconsistencies with menu options but they aren't located in the Text Editor so I'll need to edit them directly later. EDIT: Yeah, I'm not getting that support problem. Either the IPS patch wasn't created properly or you applied the patch to a wrong version of the ROM. Did you apply it to a clean Japanese ROM? I'll look into fixing the other dialogue problem later.
  23. Sorry, can you be a little more specific? Treat me like I have no idea what I'm doing. (...because I don't)
  24. Well, made some progress today and also hit a slight snag. If anyone out there who knows more about hacking than me wants to help, I would much appreciate it. For the issue, scroll down to the bottom.
