Evil brainwashing to get them to join Helenos! Jace has a chunk of the control, but he's not all powerful. So far as I know though, he was the one who started the whole Jerdon thing. If he ends up taking over the entire country I'll oppose it, probably make Septimus utter chaos and miserable for the group in the process.
