I think dondon didn't like Ephraim because of his focus on units having doubling AS (27+). That, and he's weak to anti-cavalry weapons, though they aren't quite guaranteed to connect as we've come to learn.

Ephraim, unlike dondon said is quite good unit. He has not bad As( only sometimes doubled by SM and WK, or Erika), but he hit really hard (his lance has more mt than garm, because str bonus) and he support good units like Erika, Tana, Kyle.

getting doubled is a huge liability. at least that doesn't seem to happen very often.

anyway i think that eirika, ephraim, tana is one of the best triangles in FE8; couple that with the amelia, neimi pair and you should have one of the best link arena teams in the game.

Any promoted Cav can double Ephraim apparently, as can Joshua, Marisa and Eirika. Vaness and Tana double with killer. Garm Gerik exists too.

The -reaver mindgame in the earlygame are quite nice in this one, though.

I can imagine he could be used as nuke. 57 att (without support bonuses) against Armour/horseback and 49 att against everything else is very nice.

Shame he is almost ORKO by his sis.

it's still better for ephraim to start off with siegmund equipped because he does way more damage against a lot of enemies that double him but aren't weak to reginleif. the -1 AS doesn't matter all that much.

in any case, someone should try out that team i just posted. it has a big weakness to anti-cavalry weapons if neimi goes ranger, though.

It's 54 atk at WTD, capable of missing, not doubling and likely to get doubled back.

Plus when he exposes a different weapon, he can get Garmed without much punishment.

The GKs are pretty bulky too; Kyle especially so.

the good thing about ephraim is that he can get +20 to +25 hit from supports if he's paired with eirika or tana. he also has a lot of skl and luk, so even with a single layer of WTD, he should still have around 75 hit with reginleif or siegmund.

Well, he did manage to hit one of the most evasive units in the game through reaver WTD (-30) just now, so that's an indication of something. Still, I can't imagine choosing to attack any of the GKs with Reginleif without having them expose their current weapon first (and seeing that it isn't Garm).

I actually would send Ephraim agaist garm user. Iw he would hit, then hitted unit is almost dead and won't do much trouble.

but really, ephraim hurts. and moreso than his capability for single-hit damage is the fact that the support bonuses that he gives to eirika and tana are not trivial; they both get +2 to +3 atk and +10 to +15 hit, with already high innate accuracy and the capacity for huge damage output due to good offensive stats.

It might not matter, honestly. Some of the effective damage attacks do not quite OHKO, which makes them comparable to high-damage attacks that also generally 2HKO regardless of class. I do admit Reginleif is possibly the best effective weapon in the metagame.

Kyle is another viable support option for Ephraim, receiving the same support bonuses as Tana.

Too bad Cormag doesn't support very good units - his physical bulk is pretty huge with Vidofnir.
