"A jungle fever? Yes, I did my research well on that... Around the Crossing region? Well, you do not need to worry about it reaching us. As long as the soldiers stay out in that area until cured... and I was very strict about this, once I ascertained it was the midges of the area that spread it." He shook his head, sadly. "The indigenous healers have a serum, of sorts, which can prevent mhalari as they call it from spreading. But once infected, there is nothing they can do but hope. The southern garrisons need to take the serum, or else disease will ravage their ranks - it is that simple."

He turns to look at you. "Have you taken the serum? I doubt it. But the actual ingredients are not hard to come by. Twenty-five coins for the teaching and five for the ingredients - the resupply is, of course, free - and you can leave with the ability to save lives."

Mary arched an eyebrow. "Deal on both the teaching and ingredients. This'll go under 'occupational expenses'." She made a mental note about the carrier. Perhaps I should include some bug repellent in my kit.

Khaled is generous with his teachings, if not so much with his prices - you find yourself not only able to concoct the vaccine, but get enough information on the side to know a little more about basic poultices and vulneraries.

You gain the skill Baharese Medicine, which heals for 5 HP, cures fever and damage over time.

"Thank you very much," Mary responded politely, before taking her leave. This time, she decided to try her luck with the townspeople.

"The four big cities here are Chenoworth in the northwest, Mathrake in the centre, Gullport to the east and the capital, Tanith," says a tall, swarthy woman fond of exposition. "Well... I say 'big'. None's close to a real city yet, you'll know what I mean if you go to a big mainland city yerself."

Mary made a mental note of the, er, geography. Do I LOOK like a map-maker? Her stomach empty, she decided to stop by the pub. I could use some food!

The pub was large, rickety-looking, and fairly quiet in the early afternoon. The landlord was a tall redheaded man, with curly hair and wearing a shirt obviously first owned by a much larger man. He nods at you as you enter.

"My group needs me sober, lest I accidentally mix up my medicines and spices," she said with a small smile. "I'll take one of your pasties."

The man took the money first - too used to opportunistic people with quicker hands, evidently - but the pasty itself is passable. The meat is recognisably horsemince, but it's swimming in a lot of gravy.

Mary ate her meal in silence. . .well, as silently as she could. Perhaps the denizens of the pub would have more to say than the layout of the land.

"Our armies are heavy infantry and foot archers - and it's hard going against the natives," confides a limping footsoldier. "They have these bows you fire flat - well accurate for a bow, and vicious with a whole mob of 'em. And those lead-weighted maces of theirs... bloody scary. You ever see one of 'em hit a man's skull? 'Cause, mate... don't look."

"You got done in by a kid with a firebomb and the most backwater soldiers around. I'm not impressed." Sherry stuck her tongue out at Dempsey as he was dragged away to his fate, humoring his comment. The door slammed and she sighed. "D'you need anything else, your highnesses?"

----------

"Ah, wonderful." He wondered if he could scrape together some money, now that he'd been paid, to equip himself with better armor. That aside, he made for the exit. "Well, if you are going to come along, Bekke, would you mind helping me there? The leg's not the best to walk on, especially after all that marching." He was a bit ashamed to admit, but it was true, and forcing himself any more on it wouldn't end up doing him any good.

Meredith rubbed her hands over her eyes - she looked like she hadn't slept in over a day. "Make yourselves available. I could have a use for you. But for now, you're dismissed. There are..." She glanced at the Countess. "We have to discuss something in private."

"Yeah sure. Though it's Bekka, not Bekke. I'm hurt that you've already forgotten my name~" She grinned at the man as she offered her arm for him to lean on.

Ten meanwhile glanced around the armory and the shrugged. Didn't seem like there was much for him to buy here. Glancing at the man running the place though, he nodded to himself and walked up to the man. "Hello. I am wondering... What is the news in this town? Is there much need for fighting men like myself? And I hear the daughter of the Countess is here. What news of that?"

Callum lit a cigarette, and offered another to the tracker. "Curious, aren'tcha? Nah, the front's moved well west of here - and we're safe from the brigands and plagues down south, safe enough most in Highwaters don't even know about 'em. The siege has been enough for us. As for the Countess' daughter? Meredith Martane... yeah, she's a rare beauty, and off t' Tanith in less than a week. Her betrothed came of age, see - they been promised t' each other since they started chasin' skirts. Sort of thing ain't permitted back in Othidia, from what the boys from there told me - not so much as people are against the theory, just the bluebloods want children. But the need fer pumpin' out children sort of died away with the famine. You know about the famine back on the mainland? Hell, more'n'half the reason we came west in the first place."

Ten raised an eyebrow as the man started talking, but accepted the cigarette. Nodding thankfully to the man, he did his best to understand what the man was saying. "Ah, famine, so you come here. Makes sense I suppose. We have enough food here for plenty I suppose." Rubbing the back of his head with his free hand, he shrugged slightly. "Still, picked a hard way to go about it with all the fighting my people. Have you any idea if there is somewhere I could find better weaponry as well? I wish I could afford some of the armor you have here but sadly I am not well paid for my services. I think they were not pleased I did not fight and rather did my scouting job that I was hired for." He shook his head and sighed. "Ah well, I suppose saving money is a good thing too. Will allow me to buy fine cigarettes like the one you shared with me. Ah, in addition to weaponry... is there any rumor that a man working in a mercenary group such as me should know?"

"Weapons? Marnette the fletcher has a few bows on offer, but she mostly specialises in bows. Karel - a veteran, mate of mine - got a decent selection of weapons on offer. Damn shame you didn't get your full pay packet - scoutin' ain't easy, an' your lot know this place a damn sight better than us." Callum scratches his chin. "As for rumours? Can't say I hang in the right circles. I'll say this much, seems like the war in the west is going well. Marshal Martane - and yeah, same family - is gettin' tutored by an old merc general, Henry Tarrant. With him, and the armies of Generals Chaucer and Joyce on either side, he's turning the war around."

"Hmm, well I doubt they'll have a much better bow than mine," he said while unshouldering his bow to show it to the man. "But thank you for your advice. And your information. I will keep it in mind." He bowed slightly to the man. "I will leave for now, but perhaps if I manage to gain some more money I will revisit this shop. Or maybe if I just want someone to share a cigarette with." He smiled at the man and turned to go, heading to Karel's shop next.

"Give a holler if you need anything. I'd be glad to help." Sherry made a paltry attempt at a bow, and walked herself out. Immediately outside, she rolled up a smoke and had at it, sighing after the first breath. "What can I even do here, now?"

----------

"Bekke? Did I..." Arin paused for a moment. He was sure that he'd said Bekka. "Perhaps this injury is worse than I think it is if I'm staying names incorrectly. We should make haste, to the apothecary." He would've sped off, if not for obvious reasons. He allowed himself to be supported by Bekka, and made for the apothecary with her in tow.

Cliving sighed, and handed Sherry her slip. "Hand this in, get coin, book a room at Martane's Voice and stay out of trouble. We've earned our downtime."

As you enter the apothecarium, Khaled begins to introduce himself, but stops when he notices Arin's leg. "Ach, the bandagework is dreadful - come with me."
He bustles Arin into a side room, with a bare wooden slate on it. "Take a seat here - I need to fetch my supplies." He begins rummaging around behind the counter in the main room - the building seems littered with doors, as though the intent was to make certain anyone could go anywhere from any room taking any route without having to stop to think.

"Can I make that a room with you?" Sherry asked, flatly, as she took the slip. "Not drunk. I promise."

----------

"Uhm, sure, yes, uh." Arin stumbled to say as he was pushed into a side room and sat on a slate. "You take your time. I'm not dead yet, so I'm sure it can wait a few more moments." He glanced over at Bekka, stopping himself from idly swinging his legs where he was sitting. "Riveting, eh?" He laughed a little.
