yeah haha, I took a little break to focus on spending time with friends before we graduated high school, but I'm back now. I did enjoy that draft but once we both stopped I had no desire to go back and finish it :/

Prologue - 2/2

So hard.

Chapter 1 - 5/7

Eir is still at base HP.

Chapter 2 - 6/13

NPC Ross MVP for influencing bandit AI.

Chapter 3 - 9/22

That's the best I could do with Eir/Vanessa. . .but on the upside, Colm stole an Iron Sword and Hand Axe all by his lonesome!

Chapter 4 - 8/30

"OMG clipsey what took so long?"

Getting Artur's ass out of the line of fire. I got some much-needed levels of offense on everyone (though Eir's 8 Strength at level 11 is a wee bit worrisome, since I'm running low on Rapier uses).

Chapter 5- 4 (28)

Vanessa drops off Eirika the OP bosskilling lord and then doubles back to pick up the Armorslayer for future use (probably). Ross gets the Dracoshield.

Chapter 5x- 7 (35)

Standard stuff. Forde does his Javelin thing and gets the chest key+door key and some really nice levels. I've never used him even in casual runs, but if these levels aren't just a coincidence he might become my favorite cav in this game.

Chapter 6- 4 (39)

Yeah, there's just no dropping Eirika on turn 2 without Vanessa getting killed. 4 turns let me feed her the bosskill, which is cool because I think she's underleveled (lvl 7). Ross reaches level 10 so he's going Pirate next chapter.

honestly i think my team is pretty op in general, im kind of glad I got seth so I can show how op he actually is. Chapter 7 will suck, but otherwise it'll be smooth sailing I think.

Your Eirika blows lol. Gilliam's Speed is also hilarious, although that might be average.

The best part about gilliam is he still one shotted doogs and doubled other thowmps. Honestly my other units stats don't really unit chapter 15 which, uh might be a bad time. Maybe promoted Joshua will do something!

CHAPTER 14 - 8/75 TURNS

Seth ran to the throne room and silver lanced Carlyle twice. Garcia fetched the energy ring, and everyone else did next to nothing.

I'm honestly not sure what's the best way to balance FE8 drafting. With FE9, double Marcia and double jill worked wonders imo. But I wonder if double Franz double Nessie is really the way to go in this game?

I'm curious where everyone thinks the challenge in a draft should lie, as that could give some direction. In order for a competitive rule to have value, it needs to make the competition more 'interesting,' usually talked about in terms of number and complexity of decisions to be made correctly in order to win. Where do you think this depth is to be found, and what's getting in the way?

I believe the ideal is to construct a team that performs evenly well through the Early, Middle, and Late Game within the restrictions of a draft. My observation is that the naive approach (ie. just the drafting rules alone) puts emphasis on the Early Game, as most of the community rules seem to lessen this impact. It seems intuitive that a poorly performing Early Game would cause more damage than a poorly performing Mid Game, and it seems quite difficult to have a poorly performing End Game regardless of the team. Does smoothing out Early Game variance result in a more interesting challenge?

On the other hand, perhaps the Early Game is the most interesting portion of the competition and it should be emphasized (within reason). For those who find the fun in trying to make unconventional units fill conventional roles, I'd say that occurs most strongly in the Early Game.

I don't really have the experience to comment on the relative merits of these smaller tweaks like double Franz/Vanessa, but I did have two wild and crazy ideas:

How about a draft structure that can accommodate differing team sizes? If Seth or Franz or whoever can Fight Like Ten Men, why do they only count as one pick? I haven't followed any of the auction drafts, so I don't know if they do this already. The way I'm picturing it, everyone gets something like 10 times the number of picks in points to purchase their team. Then, before the draft, each participant rates each unit in points by how much they think the unit is worth. Each unit is then assigned the average cost from each player, the order is randomized, and the draft proceeds as normal, with the caveat that you can no longer pick once you've run out of points.

Alternatively, how about a draft structure that cares about individual chapters rather than just overall? Say a poor team can do Chapter X in 15 turns and Chapter Y in 2 turns, while a good team can get through in 10 and 1, respectively. Why does Chapter X have such a disproportionate impact on the draft's success? Say you instead received points for your relative turn counts in each chapter, and then compare those scores at the end? "I'm pretty sure I can win Chapters X, Y, and Z; I've got a good shot at Chapters Q, R, and S; and I'm at least competitive everywhere except Chapters I, J, and K, so I'll want to wring out all the value I can from those." There would need to be turn count par times for each chapter, though, to prevent things like boss/arena abuse.

Anyway, thoughts?

The scoring by single chapter has been used in Lockstep drafts and a couple of others (I may have missed some) which gave points for both turns and exp (Right now I'm planning on having a sequel to that last one I linked). I think it could also make drafts more strategic, especially in seize and kill boss maps where you can go for the exp points and have a stronger team, go for the turns points and have more room to grow, or a balance between the two.

Chapter 7- 4 (43)

Suck on that Seth. Vanessa drops Eirika on turn 2 so she can kill the boss turn 3. Also Pirate Ross is a thing.

Chapter 8- 11 (54)

I hate this chapter :( Got the whip for Nessie but I don't think it was worth it.

Chapter 9- 6 (60)

Instapromote Vanessa to WK and Forde to Pally to make this chapter less of a living hell. Forde runs to kill Amelia when she spawns up and Eirika kills off his scraps because he obviously wasn't doubling Mercs. Vanessa had boss killing duty and had to dodge a ridiculous amount of bow users but none of them had 50+ hitrates so it wasn't so bad. Pirate Ross might become Berserker Ross next chapter if he maxes out strength.

I recently came across a project that examined draft orders (in the context of fantasy football, but should be applicable to FE drafts as well) and maybe the least first algorithm could work out nicely here. It's kind of like an auction draft, except that every player still has the same team size, which probably simplifies the overall process and avoid units getting picked for way more/less than they're actually worth.

Woah Horace, you actually started a Seth draft? Holy shit, your team is way too OP... Artur is 3rd best unit without Seth.

I've always thought the best way to balance FE8 drafts would be to have 5 drafters and draftable Seth, because the top 8 or 9 picks have really high value and then there is a sudden drop off, and 1st pick just so happens to get the 8th and 9th picks as well.

Drafting with Seth would look something like this:

1st- Vanessa, Moulder, Ross,

2nd- Seth, Garcia, Natasha

3rd- Franz, Lute, Kyle,

4th- Artur, Gilliam, Colm, Gerik

5th- Tana, Saleh, Niemi, Forde

The meta could get complicated. 5th pick has lots of options and could potentially screw over the top 3 picks if they take Saleh and Lute, because a good warper saves just as many turns in the last 7 maps as Nessie/Seth/Franz in the first 8 maps.

Imagine Chp 20 with no warper or flyer.

After thinking about it, 6 drafters would be really interesting...
