Sorry, pancakes were the first thing I could actually bake, so I'm somewhat passionate about them, although I haven't made them in years...

It was a reference to a conversation from a time ago. Claudius was offended or so because we 'Muricans have pancakes for breakfast, and he wanted to take me to a "real" pancake restaurant in the Netherlands. Then I told him he needed to come to 'Murica and I'd bring him to a pancake place as well.

So the buying pancakes was always about going to a restaurant. Why would we buy them in a supermarket? That's gross.
