Why are you so obsessed with this thing called " Metroid " ?

Because it's good. You do not play Metroid, so visit this topic again when it's relevant for you.

Because it's good.

Actually healthy and well-rounded people can like a good thing without being obsessed by it and were I you I would strive towards this state of mind.

Well, you seem to like my topic an awful lot...

Also, I think you may be confusing "obsessed" with "specialist".

@Power Master, Emeraldfox, Fire Emblem Fan: Thank you for participating in the old poll. It's gone now, and I can't bring it back, so I hope you had enough time to see the results. I've added a couple options to the new poll.

Zera, you can't vote on your own poll. It'll just make it redundant in this case.

I have no idea what you mean by that. The poll is a means of gathering opinion data, and I have an opinion. It's not like I have more votes than anyone else.

Could you at least add Super Metroid to the poll?

It is generally agreed upon that Super Metroid is THE quintessential Metroid experience, so the question is whether Prime or Other M is a more accurate translation of that experience to 3D. I vote Prime because it has better controls, music, and less cutscenes than Other M, which makes it closer to Super Metroid IMO.

Both. They have the exact same amount of Metroid in them, they are both core entries into the series and therefore have equal amounts of Metroid "essence." To say Prime is more Metroid than Other M or vice versa is honesty kinda silly, regardless of how you feel about either game.

So far, EVERY Metroid has felt like a Metroid game. Saying one is the "core" of the franchise just feels limited and irrelevant. Now you can say one is your favorite in the series (mine being Metroid Prime), but they all felt like Metroid. And not just because "It has Samus" or "Metroids are in it." I mean the gameplay and controls and the overall feel of the game series has felt like Metroid.

When I say "core" I mean they aren't spinoff's like Pinball.

Also, to say Other M is less Metroid because it has more cutscenes is like saying Skyward Sword is less Zelda because it has more dialogue than Ocarina of Time, or Majora's Mask is less because it has more side quests than Link to the Past.

These are some very interesting responses. For me, the essence of Metroid games is the variety of things that make them fun.

Also, to say Other M is less Metroid because it has more cutscenes is like saying Skyward Sword is less Zelda because it has more dialogue than Ocarina of Time, or Majora's Mask is less because it has more side quests than Link to the Past.

I think you're misinterpreting the issue. Skyward Sword's problem wasn't increased dialogue - it was reduced text speed and constant interruptions. Majora's Mask's problem wasn't increased sidequests - it was less dungeons. It's usually subtractions that harm a game, not additions.

Compared to Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, Other M has -

- worse controls.

- less memorable music.

- less exploration.

- shallower combat

- no new powerups or abilities of any significance.

- a more interrupted game flow...

- ...and less immersion as a result.

These are all things that I look for in a Metroid game. So what did we get in return? Well, the Speed Booster and Screw Attack work well in 3D... and that's the only contribution Other M makes to the Metroid series. It's a step down in quality, both as a Metroid game and a game in general. The classic Metroid fun simply isn't as abundant. It has less Metroid in it. And that's why I chose Metroid Prime in the poll. :D:

Oh, okay.

I can't really vote then, I've never played either game.

I'm not misinterpreting anything.

"Worse controls"

The controls as a whole are fine. Samus controls well. The arm canon is fine. The speed booster is fine. The bombs are fine. The screw attack is fine. Literally everything controls well except for the missiles. But even that isn't any worst than the terrible grappling in Super Metroid. So...

"Less memorable music"

Subjective, tastes in music vary.

"Less exploration"

It has about as much as Fusion, so?

"Shallower combat"

Again, subjective.

"No new powerups or abilities of any significance"

Not every Metroid has those, either. You can't single out Other M.

"A more interrupted flow"

How so? Cutscenes? I don't think so.

"And less immersion"

Because why? I was fully immersed. Subjective, again.

Your arguments are really just not good. It's all subjective, and you can't argue subjective things for a topic like this. To say "because I have this opinion about these subjective things" just doesn't work. Your arguments for Other M being "less Metroid" than Prime just don't work. Now, if Other M had added space ship combat, a Tekken-style boss fight at the end, or a time-traveling sentient taco, THEN you could say "this isn't Metroid!" But it didn't. It does not have "less Metroid" than any other Metroid game.

"Why are you so obsessed with this game called Metroid?" asked Agatha.

"Because it's good," you replied, not seeming to object to the statement at all. When I note this, suddenly you deny this obsession.

Also idk what you linked to but it claimed to be from someone called the Angry Video Game Nerd, who I can only assume is you. I don't intend to listen to your voice for seventeen minutes, I'm sorry to say.

@Parrhesia - Agatha was joking/spamming this topic, so I applied an equally half-hearted repsonse. You seemed to take it as a serious statement, though. I'm not "obsessed" with Metroid, but I would consider myself a fan now that I've played most of them. The Wii U Virtual Console was paramount in getting the 2D ones. I find the design of the games fascinating, particularly how the series has evolved through Metroid, Super Metroid, Prime, and Other M.

For the record, I am not the Angry Video Game Nerd. AVGN is a character played by James Rolfe, but you would know that if you googled it like the smart person you are. If I link something I made, I will inform you that it's mine.

@Fire Emblem Fan - I get the strong impression that you didn't see my review of Metroid: Other M. ; ] It supports all the points I made here, so I recommend you read it.

Or I could've just linked all these and called it a day -

...it's almost as if you can't just immediately dismiss all of Other M's flaws without thinking!

"No new powerups or abilities of any significance"

Not every Metroid has those, either. You can't single out Other M.

Are you sure? Why don't you name one then?
