FrostyFireMage
Bad movepool, mediocre stats and insufficient Sp. Attack to take advantage of STAB bonuses. 3/10. Edited July 5, 2012 by Frosty Fire Mage
Ema Skye
Terrible movepool, both natural and through TMs. Stats are medicore at best (nothing is higher than base 92). If it wants to abuse that base 92 Atk, it's gonna have to use Normal-type moves. Otherwise it has to rely on the base 65 SpA it has. 2/

Ema Skye
Probably the best bug in FRLG. Scyther has moveset problems, and Pinsir never gets STAB. >.< That doesn't mean it's amazing though. It's got mediocre stats (90 SpA and Speed are its highest). Which are pretty average in this game. Getting Silver Wind through move relearner gives Venomoth access to the best Bug-type move in the game (60 BP, 5 PP, Gamefreak hates bugs). It's got all the same status spores as Buttterfree, only with actual stats. It's still got the narrow movepool of the most of the Pokemon in Gen.3, but it's got stats that let it use that narrow movepool (which Zubat, Vulpix and Paras can't do). It's too bad this game hates it. After you get your hands on a Venonat, you've got Koga, Sabrina, Blane, Giovanni and the Elite Four left. Sabrina and Blane tear Venomoth a new one. I guess it can do alright against Giovanni if you avoid the Rock-type moves, and Psybeam @ Lv.36 can help against Koga. You resist his STABs and hit him for super effective damage. 4.5 + 1 bias = 5.5/10 - It gets pretty gimped by its typing, which gives it two physical STABs to run off of base 65 SpA. It really wanted the Physical/Special split to come in this Gen, as it would be a lot better. It's niche against Koga. It's still got powders and stuff that Butterfree had. Only difference is that it has higher stats.
FrostyFireMage
Venomoth has no real way to take advantage of STAB due to its low Attack, and has to rely on a few Grass and Psychic moves to do actual damage. It does, however, have status powders and actual stats, unlike Butterfree. 5/10. At least it gets a lot better in later generations. I love Venomoth. :(
Ninja Caterpie
Can't use its STABs effectively and doesn't do too well against any of the remaining gym leaders by the time you get it. 4/

Bug/Poison isn't the best typing in the world, but it will do for Venomoth.
MacLovin
Kinda like a Gyrados with worse stats. Useable though, and is decent. 5/
Espinosa
It's really terrible until its evolution at lv. 31, when it suddenly gets good special attack and speed. Psybeam is learnt quickly as Venomoth, but you'll want to teach it Psychic and Giga Drain if you're seriously planning to use it. Psychic especially is a highly contested TM, and Venomoth is amongst the worst users of it; it's highly unlikely to get it. Without these TMs, it's really mediocre (Parasect can at least destroy trainers with buyable TMs and high attack) and training a Venonat to evolve is really not worth the time no matter how you look at it. 3/
Espinosa
0/10, would give a negative score if I could Good Rod nets you Goldeens at a maximum level of 15; 10 in the Safari Zone. You have to be kidding if you seriously want to train one. At least grinding Dratini up results in a beautiful Dragonite, Seaking is a joke that doesn't justify the time spent training a Goldeen. I don't play for turns
Darn, I missed it. But for what it's worth, in my Emerald run, it saved me from Watson's Manectric when my Aron fainted and Grovyle got paralyzed.
frat_tastic
Like Butterfree, only with slightly better stats (that aren't worth it, especially when it evolves much later) and no Compound Eyes skill to boost powders/supersonic. 3/10.

Actually, you can fish one up with the Old Rod at Lv. 10, on Route 102. Still doesn't make it any good, mono-Normal is terrible without STAB. And you have to drag it to Lv. 33 for it to become halfway decent. Even then, it's still terrible at actually being a Water-type. 2/10, at least it makes a good HM slave, if you get one. Ema Skye
BEASTY MCBEASTY FISH! So yeah, Magikarp is pretty useless. But Gyarados is like a reward or something. It's too bad it gets no Flying-type moves, and that it's special attack sucks. So Gyarados doesn't really have any STAB unless you get lucky with Hidden Power Flying. For coverage you're getting Return/Earthquake/Rock Smash, but you'll have Dragon Dance to power them up. Gyarados' power without STAB testifies its power. Gyarados is wonderful defensively, with 95/79/100 Defenses with Intimidate. 125 Attack is great. 81 Speed is reasonably fast. Dragon Dance is awesome. 8/10 - Loses points for worthless Magikarp and no STAB. Otherwise, it's perfect.
TheVinceKnight
10/10. It's not a god like Pokemon YET. Doesn't have it's stab (waterfall / aqua tail), but switch in Gyarados on a physical attacker, and wall him, especially when they are intimidated. Gyarados is god damn bulky, well worth training a useless piece of Splash and IT HAS DRAGON DANCE. End of story. Dragon Dance then proceed to your sweep. 8/10 + .5 bias. 8.5/10. Ninja Caterpie
A monster even without STABs. Bulky enough to be able to pull off 2 or 3 DDs ingame and rip through everything with anything. It is a bit annoying to train, but you can daycare it until 19 and then evolve (lol). It's not like it would be doing anything against Wallace anyway. 9/10 with bias for being my favourite Pokemon. (not to mention Magikarp can sweep stuff with Flail if you want it to). Edited July 6, 2012 by Ninja Caterpie
FrostyFireMage
Gyarados is a good Pokemon, but not awesome. In later gens it's a monster, but in R/S/E it has no moves that have both STAB and run off it's massive attack stat. Yes, it does get Dragon Dance, but not until Level 50. Regardless, it does have a good movepool and a few great moves like Facade and Earthquake. 7.5/10.
