Not that it stops hurricanes from doing the same.

Yeah, makes sense.

She probably will.

Well, chances are good Yunaka may beat her for first place... which could still be fine, but there's always the possibility someone like Bernadetta or even Female!Alear becomes the darkhorse of the race. Specially if they're gonna release interim results this early now. So, nothing set in stone yet.

ell, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. We can only agree to disagree at this point.

And nothing wrong with that 😉

I'd say it's still an issue

Oh it is. It absolutely is

But i don't think solving it using "western methods" is the right way, as they a different way of living than we do.

how the pushback against it has been an important entryway to far right rethoric for young people in recent years

Oh yes

But will the pushback and it being used as a gateway to far right rethoric exist if the whole thing wasn't a problem made of nothing to begin with?

If the representation development was more, for the lack of better term, "natural" instead of feeling really forced, wouldn't it have been better?

To clarify, i am not saying "representation bad", far from it. But when i am into a story/media product, and something takes me out of it for the sake of "representation" - and this happens quite often - it's quite irksome, feels very forced and i just feel pretty annoyed at the end.

I will never go far right for it - i can't even stand "moderate" right most of the time - but i can see why those unhappy with their lives, the young and the vulnerable can fall into a rabbit hole because of that.

I've seen it happen. I've talked with people about it.

I have foreigner (!) friends complaining, in their own words not mine,  about "companies only caring about woke bs instead of delivering a good product". (Not that being foreign absolves them of racism or discriminatory thinking, but i think you get the idea, they are suppossed to be some of the people we reach with this whole thing, yet it's backfiring)

It becomes even worse when said product is exported elsewhere and then censored, like in china or saudi. Suddenly all the ideals don't matter anymore - total hypocrisy.

A story should only be beholden to it's own setting and nothing else, imo.

Just as relevant as anyone else's 😉

That was his response

Well, if nothing else changes, she already has the Byleth Ring, so Zephia would likely just take the ring from her when she bails out.

Gundam in the Morning:

Spoiler

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-07-42-49.png

From an old man in their SRW debut, to a young man they had at that time fought besides, the change in the guy in charge of training the Dragonar scrubs has changed, yet with a hint of familiarity.😆 Though I suppose you could find a worse combat instructor than *checks to make sure my audial guess is correct*, than the bounty hunter who leads the Date clan and has been through hell and heaven.🤣

The sub-scenario that followed made check one thing.:

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-07-45-58.png

I can choose deployment locations, but not as elegantly as later in SRW. I can't move them around after I've chosen who I'm fielding.

Doing the following scenario, entering the Earth's atmosphere was a nice battle, kinda easy, but for a first "reach X point in Y turns" not bad.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-05-18.png

Char?

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-07-05.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-07-19.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-07-27.png

...This scene was voiced!😲 An SRW, having voice-acting, outside of combat. Do my ears smell an 8th flavor?

Did they borrow the script word-for-word and the echos of the vocal cords from the ancient archive? (Aina and Norris's lines weren't voiced BTW.) Why only now? Was this that momentous a moment in Gundam's founding days?

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-08-59.png

Trider is about as tall as all three Dragonars combined.

Overall, nice scene. Good use of this bygone era.😄

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-09-47.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-11-16.png

Gotta show the genius SRW gameplay doesn't permit you to have in mere Zaku, not bad Char.

And these two go well together indeed.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-10-16.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-10-39.png

And now I get to see what a Wasabi looks like.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-10-58.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-11-07.png

"Friends".

Well you know the saying- "flattery will get you to the jugular".

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-16-20.png

Hahahahahahahaha!🤣

Reminder your future AP Ace Bonus gives you +10% Mobility when piloting any unit with "Gundam" in the name.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-16-51.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-17-02.png

I know they've thrown in the Z and ZZ G units, so is this Amuro hinting at how they get fitted into an altered timeline that's too early for them?

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-25-55.png

Thank heavens he ain't a Newtype -although I'm sure Char would've learned how to build a mental barrier against mind-reading no later than a month after he was left fatherless.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-27-28.png

So he is on the Charred to a Crisp List, and the next scenario's title says it's up next!☠️

Backing up a moment,

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-25-07.png

AP told me what happens. I think?😅 Whether optimistic SRW chooses to make Shiro a crying survivor in GC is what I'm left to ponder. If that's canon, then sure, go ahead, because what would be a better game to do that?

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-31-22.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-09-30-58.png

Three new Gundams and a truck with EWAC. It's early enough that I'll can get use out of these low-end units, and I would love it if I could keep that automobile, as practically useful as Dragonar-3.

The best thing to come out of this? Shine in the Storm!😎 The smoothest, best Gundam track I've heard.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-10-15-18.png

I thought Gundam didn't have aliens?

I checked the bio pages for these baddies of old, which have now unlocked with their appearance in the story. Turning a republic into a principality? A family of schemers? Must be very proud of their De Medici ancestry. I won't stop the Red if he wants 'em dead.

Hmm, then I guess you'll find out soon enough.

Repair doesn't work on limbs, though docking unit in a battleship does. And it's not Repair Kits that fix them, it's a new consumable called Spare Parts, which only fully heal one component. Though they are kinda common drops, battleships in particular like to carry them so far (no doubt because they're easy captures worth a lot of money).

So Super Robots ought to be fine. If one of them can attract all the attention it should be okay, since the Will gains from soloing an enemy phase can cover the -5 Will for docking, and let all their allies fight the weakened grunts while their appendages get fixed up. It's the ship that's going to need to stay back somewhat, or at least surround itself with supporters who'll redirect hits. Could make Shiro a little more useful, since he also has Command and isn't a battleship.

Admittedly, I long dropped the idea. Well, it's still there, gathering digital dust. Also alongside my Compact+ idea. Admittedly my current SRW focus is for my own more original fan idea. But perhaps one day I may revisit.

This reminds me I saw one comment by someone who wished they could make an adjustment to the Alpha series. Moving SEED (and this Astray side story I look forward to in W) to a remade Alpha 1 and then using the Destiny(?) sequel story later.

I bring this mostly so I can slide in mention of this.:

snow-sculpture-of-rising-freedom-gundam-

SMH at not constructing an entire life-sized Gundam out of snow. Or ice, I'd settle for ice, but I'd rather have R-2 then, or Daimos.

No, it's not.

Before we go throwing racism accusations around at an anime poll, there multiple reasons Solm's Royalty are lacking in popularity:

* Come pretty late

* Out of all the royals, they are the most healthy and sane ones - that makes for less interesting characters

* Story wise, the conflict early on centers around Brodia & Elusia - there's a reason their characters are the most popular. Solm is relatively unharmed, because they are the smartest country on the continent lol

* No outstanding combat performance either - infact, their retainers outdo them quite hard

* They don't have much going for them either. Alear & Veyle are the leads and centers of the story, Alfred is a classic Shoujo Prince, Celine has alot of baggage, Brodia & Solm Royals have their conflict, their fathers zombiefied & alot going on in general. What do Solm get? Fun & Healthy characters ig

It can be a mix of these things, none of it has to be mutually exclusive.

I don't think folks are actively avoiding characters from Solm as some conscious racist act but generally with any kind of prejudice its often silent, beyond a person's own personal views of the world and more what they subconsciously see as being okay or normal.

7 hours ago, Shrimpy -Limited Edition- said:

The problem i see with such discourse is the following:

* Forcing american/new world views on a completely different culture. Even if the problem exists (and it does, i am not denying that), coming from an outside view with no context of said culture doesn't leave a positive impression. The whole world is not the US (or the west). This just makes it all worse and make it all seem like meddling.

I'm reminded of the story of Disney princess merchandise in Japan specifically excluded Tiana, the only black disney princess for a while, for...some reason. I don't know how true that is now or even back then but regardless...

I'm not sure what US specific views you are implying but knowing what racism is and learning to recognize implicit beliefs that imply prejudice would I think would be important for any society to know. Its not endemic to any culture to say that seeing another culture as less valuable is wrong.

Japan as a country does indeed have a very different view on race compared to the US, as does Europe. That doesn't mean the Americas' color-based relation with race doesn't have a valuable insight to share about it, especially since people of color do exist in these countries. There are Japanese black people and they do face discrimination for their color even if they speak the language and know the customs.

I'd argue that with a topic as important as discrimination against marginalized groups we should be very suspicious of anyone that claims culture as a justification for certain implicit views regarding race or gender. Japan, like the US, has a history of both extreme ethno-nationalism and staunch progressivism, and like any society, has people who are in favor of the status quo, simply seeing it as the culture, and people who are in favor of letting certain outdated ideas and views go. There are many Japanese conservatives who say that being gay or being feminist is a foreigner thing, and anyone who is doing it in Japan is probably just going through a western phase. Outsiders, with a monolithic view on Japanese society, will take that at face value and claim that it is just a cultural thing as if there isn't an entire political block within the country that disagrees.

And that's why at most i just meme at "Kaga sexist" dicussions, as i massively disagree with this.

I will post a kinda relevant pic from a shoujo manga i was reading:

image.png?ex=65b3d25c&is=65a15d5c&hm=fc4

This kinda thought is quite common in jp and anime-related media, and their fans, and why they are fine with alot of the stuff in it.

When the topic of media rep comes up most of us see it as:

a) Virtue signaling

b) distracting from real problems

c) straight up hypocrisy

Especially when we see people very loudly fighting for media rep while minority rights are getting obliterated everywhere, far right is rising and no one is honestly giving a damn, it makes us look at the whole thing as a waste of time for people to feel better about themselves and ignoring real problems.

Not to mention some act like they are entitled to representation, and demand it of writers/creators as if it is their god given right. There was the whole thing with Harada a while ago and that's honestly where i stand.

In any piece of media, a discussion on how it presents certain things, intended to or not, endorsing or not, is a worthwhile discussion. It doesn't have to be a critique on the quality of writing or a call out on the beliefs of the creator. You can still talk about the things within a work and how they may be a reflection of something within a society without outright condemning it. I find that there are many people who, when the topic of politics is brought up in a work, go on the defensive and assume it to be a critique on the work itself as if all art doesn't have some amount of political implications, intended or otherwise, or that you can still like a work while also acknowledging it may have some problematic elements. I make jokes about the sexism within Fire Emblem, but I wouldn't be doing that if I didn't love the franchise, nor do I think most of the creators are doing it as some conscious malicious act.

Point being, stop going on twitter. It only seeks to give you rage bait to be miserable at and gives you a twisted perspective of what people are talking about. Don't let the supposed distraction from real problems be itself a distraction from real problems. Join a union, go out a protest, boycott various corporate goods, get invested in local news and politics, get involved in anti fascist meetings to talk about those real problems and what to be done about them. When you get out of your own little internet bubble you'll find that quite a lot of people are giving a damn about the rise of the far right.

Yes, but the relations and history are quite different. Discrimination is there, again not denying that, but the whole "black vs. White" (or color relations) is a pretty US centric view that has been imported over to the old world with only negative result.

The weird part is how people began making all sorts of excuses as to why the Solmic royals weren't popular, except it's reasons that didn't stop anyone else.

Like when has late arrivals, mediocreness, plot irrelevance ever stopped a character from being popular?

They ain't being racist but it's still kinda 🤨 how these are suddenly justifiable factors now.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-08-14.png

Now I see how ridiculous his hair is.

Considering Dancouga was stapled onto J, actually experiencing its plot this time will be appreciated.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-16-49.png

The massive foreheads of Dan is one thing. Sara's big eyes make it really... stylized, to use a nice word for it.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-17-40.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-17-51.png

Danny looks pretty familiar. Aggressive Beast Change and Dancoukougaken aren't available, which would make sense if it had plot to experience to gain them. Instinct assures Dancouga a place of prominence ofc, because +25% to damage dealt is wild.

This fan translation uses "Daigun and Dancou Sword", the J translation went with Dancouken and Big Gun. Curious what little differences different translators produce.

Musically, the J track was much more raw, if repetitive on startup, so the lighter theme here is fine.

Backing up a second...

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-11-35.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-11-42.png

Nice CG. And the "Cross in!" was voiced.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-12-01.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-12-18.png

And another Super Robot joins the ranks.

Daltanious has nice durability, but otherwise, it looks kinda weak? Part of it is its strongest weapon is only 4000 power, which is lower than any other SR right now. Although I know that's because its strongest attacks are secrets ...why? What reason is there for Daltanious not to get its best attacks simply via plot progress like most giant robots?

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-14-41.png

🧲???

The long-lost third Choudenji Bro? The two human pilots do vaguely resemble Red Leader and Blue Second. Red Leader even is surprise space royalty like Kenichi.

Jumping ahead again.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-14-17-42.png

Helios? *Remembers flipping through the D flow chart*

GC alters the Daltanius story so visiting the planet isn't necessary?

Might as well consider putting Daltanius in my final team. D being its only other game makes it a rare showing. And D, ooooh D-ear given what's said of it being anti-Super.

Going backwards again.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-37-21.png

The game hinted not at this appearance. -And the Baron A was voiced. Why choose these particular instances that you do, GC?🤔

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-37-56.png

Where have you been Kouji? We can't have Super Mazinger Wars without you. I know it's just scenario 9, plenty of game to go, but it feels late having Mazinger show up only now.

GRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-41-08.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-42-17.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-43-06.pngGRWJD9-2024-01-17-13-44-14.png

Like Dan, veeeeeery familiar. Boss Borot doesn't have Repair or flight like in J, and no armor debuff on Rust Tornado, but otherwise everyone is basically same between J and this the debut of the Mazinkaiser OVA.

However, that's no bad thing. Best damn Armor bases in the entire game for Kouji and Tetsuya, being M-sized is good protection against being crippled by Gundams, Metal Armors, and Mechabeasts/kaiju. Mazin Power kicks ass like Instinct. Just need to wait on Kouji going berserk so he can ditch the intentionally-underpowered Z, which is very noticeable unlike J since I have so many other Supers with much stronger attacks already.

As reliably strong as it is, knowing Maz Is Eternal in SRW makes the idea of putting them on the final team rather... boring.🥱

A tad surprisingly, Mazinger Team was able to destroy off the Mechabeasts that split towards them without an issues. I expected them to take more damage than they did.

Fire Wars, I almost forgot. Slower here since it doesn't have to be hastened by the GBA, but jazzier and better actually, IMO.

I'll take those parts any day. 4000 power at most is a looks utterly lackluster with the other Supers around, though fine for now really.

I know I saw that these two are playable in MD. Are they here? Slightly odd to give out more than one Original unit (Al-Van was around for like three turns) if they did.

And I can sense Sieg and Sally swapping story roles if playing with the male lead instead.

Went into the sub-scenario, the first with a secret.

Which the game gave me no hints about. Intentional unit destruction nothing you'd expect.

What is this thing?

*Checks bio page after the battle.*

Fighter Roar (the spirit, not Kouta), in the sense of the story role he fulfills.

A karakuri? I wonder if Suzuka can make this thing dance.

It's a joke unit, through and through, as I expected it would be with the name it has. But not a terrible joke actually.

...Whatever points of discussion have unfolded above, I don't feel like stepping in. Because with SRW, I am numbed out, I am given to no-life. Good thing? Sad thing? Pathetic thing? I don't know, but I do know my other laptop has finished recharging, and wouldn't it be nice to get a third session of GC in for today? And maybe a fourth.

And to think that some people say Stephen King is the uncontested master of horror.

To say that is to assume all horror movies are created equal and IMHO they’re not

You got the religious based ones which I kinda like. You got the butcherfests like Saw. Then you got the ones that are as far fetched and out there as can possibly be. Maximum Overdrive springs to mind

Grrrrrr...

Looks like MAME is another good one for constantly updatin stuff and breakin it. Just had to hunt up an older version and install that, since the rom that worked on my openemu now doesn’t work on the standalone on my PC

Why cant people leave shit alone? 🙄

Aside from reaching meme status, who exactly has those problems (and is not some kind of a populat trope, like shoujo prince or swordgirl) and is popular in the series

Basically any Est type unit. Sophia, Nino, Amelia, etc. Nino's a huge example here. No story relevance, late joining, sucks. I mean, she can be good, just like how Timerra can also be good but FE folks concept of "good unit" means "i don't have to invest in them, they should be tactical nukes straight out of the gate".

Or if Est units don't count, how about Nephenee? She has a decent following, enough to allow her to score in the Top 20 of the CYL at the very least. Still has the same problems listed above apart from join time. She joins earlier but it doesn't do much to help her.

Honestly join time is like the weirdest Timerra complaint too. "She joins late" bro she joins at barely the halfway mark and that's just counting the main maps. With the ways some acted, you'd think she was one of those GBA units who joined at the second to last map or something.

Same as Sword ladies - also unique class in being a Footie lancer - we don't get that often

Although that applies to Timerra as well tbf - but she's from Engage.

fair

But also, we did get alot of "Engage gives you too many units complaints"

They wouldn't survive New Mystery.

Even in Engage, the complaints don't add up. "Mediocre unit" Alfred is much worse and that's even with his earlier join time. And the story relevancy.....honestly i think they're all about equal. They all have their thing and then somewhat drop off, not enough to become irrelevant but enough to just being there.

Like if we're being honest, Alfred and Diamant also lose some relevancy after their chapters. I fail to see what they do in the story that Timerra doesn't. The only exception is Ivy, given she's the only one who starts as an enemy.
