People keep calling it Crimson Blaze or CB. Is there a localization difference or something I'm not aware of? Because everywhere I look it's Scarlet Blaze.

Anyway, Scarlet Blaze does kinda take place all over the place, which in some ways I kinda like, it demonstrates the difficulties of the Empire's military campaign, spreading themselves so thin and engaging on so many fronts. But you do have a point that they seem to be able to get around Fodlan awful quick.

I think people are just conflating it with Crimson Flower, not realizing the color part of the name changed too.

Doesn't help that Azure Gleam kept the "Azure" from Azure Moon.

Has anyone started to delve deep into Weapon Attribute combinations for potential Forge candidates?
-- I know I plan on forging a Rapier (although I technically already have a +80 with no attributes, as I didn't know they could drop with them), as well as a Defender's Tome and Exorcist's Tome.
-- A part of me wonders if Reckless Power may be best-in-slot, despite the Durability loss. Unless one really just wants to spam Combat Arts/Magic, it's just a straight upgrade damage-wise for everything. One can always restore Durability mid-battle with the purple pots/item drops.
== I do wish there was a way to pick and choose attributes when forging instead of relying on pure RNG (or upgrading a lower level variant up to Brave). It would also be nice on how the values were calculated as well, as "makes attacks better" or "improved damage based off of (x) stat" is not really informative...

I imagine those with Relics and Sacred Weapons will likely be using those (and potentially giving the "Crest Accessories" to those without so they can wield them if necessary). So, there may not be a huge demand for regular forged items outside of a a few niche scenarios.
-- There's also the fact one can just toss on these weapons to other units when the usual wielder is not using them, which further makes regular forging more of a novelty than a necessity.

As an aside, I'm starting to appreciate Felix's Intense Velocity personal more. While I personally still prefer Ferdie's version, being able to get some extra speed before an engagement starts is nice. It also helps on 1v1 situations, although there almost always tends to be mooks around to build up hit-count.
-- I'm also just starting to toss on personal battalions and not worry too much about trying to match and counter enemy forces. This may change when I start Maddening, although I imagine NG+ still makes things rather easy.

I suspect that Factor skills may end up being among the most desirable. I've got a maxed out Rapier with Dex Factor 3 and Spd Factor 3, which is ideal for characters like Petra and Yuri. Bonus damage for Combat Arts/Spells seems like it'd be best in slot for mages since most of their power tends to be from big ticket spells.

While I'm not confident in most sacred weapons, Spear of Assal, The Inexhaustible, and the Gloucester Axe all have secondary effects that should make them at least comparable to BiS regalia weapons. Most of the Relics are really good, even Crusher Annette who gets pretty heavy synergy with her Heaviest Hitter innate ability from Wyvern Lord. The worst relic is Hrotti Tome without a doubt, but even that can apparently be used on cheese builds with physical characters like Felix.

I have wanted to try Hrotti + a crest stone on Raphael just for shits and giggles. The idea of Raphael becoming a powerful mage through sheer muscle power amuses me greatly.

I don't think we're supposed to feel any impact toward his death. He hurt a lot of people and none of our Lions feel anything toward his death at all. I'd get it if the game focused on Miklan's death and treated it as a tragedy but they don't. It really wouldn't make much sense to try and make his death some big impactful thing it's basically no different from the typical throwaway NPC.

Spoiler

Then Miklan shouldn't have been there at all if he's he's meant to be no different from a typical throwaway NPC. Why use him specifically as a symbol of what Dimitri's trying to achieve with elevating up crestless nobles if his presence has no impact? Ultimately, my problem is that it was pointless to have Miklan in AG at all, and that stinks.

The factor skills are solid, but I'm starting to come to the conclusion that things that say "increase damage by x" are almost never going to be as good as raw attack. In the limited testing I've done, having a factor skill that should have been giving close to +20% damage ended up giving similar damage numbers as a weapon that had 30 more attack without a single damage ability. My suspicion is that all those increases get added before multiplied, so eventually they start being less impactful.

As for BiS weapons, lets not leave off Axe of Zolton for being a slightly weaker Gloucester Axe but can have abilities on it.

So I dunno if anybody's mentioned this, but after noticing you can change Shez/Byleth's gender in New Game+ I did some experimenting, and turns out they keep their learned abilities when you switch even if their new gender can't learn said ability (for example, my now-Male Shez has both Res+10 and Tableturner despite no longer having Pegasus Knight or Gremory). Even Pegasus Knight's Ploy is still there despite being totally unusable on a male character.

This means, unlike certain other female characters who just don't get an Essence skill, you can presumably get Essence of Darkness even on female Shez as long as you go through at least one playthrough as a male to learn it from Dark Mage. Also could get get all three ranks of Brawling Prowess and a bunch of extra combat arts for female Byleth/Shez to use on Fighter if you want to use Gauntlets on them (you'd still be stuck with beginner class passives, but at least they'd be better off than any other female character with Gauntlets).

I wonder how this works with the Reason you get from both Dark Mage and Gremory... presumably it caps at level 3?

Fanservice Musou spinoff moment. It ultimately gives a twist on his original fate where he also died without fanfare or long term impact. At least he was used as a symbol this time.

I admit, I was kinda disappointed by his inclusion simply because while it was better than in Three Houses, it felt so abrupt. Like when I saw what they were doing with him, I was pleased, it had potential, maybe he could get a bit of a redemption arc, force him to come to terms with his hatred for his dad and what an asshole he was for taking it out on his little brother. But no, it just suddenly and abruptly ends with his death before it really goes anywhere, no one really dwells on his death, and we move on.

Regarding recruiting Byleth in Azure Gleam...

Spoiler

You only have to be careful on the initial approach (activate the strategy and follow the green line, making sure no one wanders into the wrong stronghold by accident). Once Fleche is defeated and Alois spawns, I believe it is safe to start capturing everything and going on the offensive.
-- After Alois and crew are defeated, beat up Randolph before Byleth gets to him.
== I'm not sure what counts as a fail condition, as I managed to avoid the ambushes as well as avoid the mercs attacking the base camp.

I thought it would be more difficult, but that may be because I read up a little beforehand and had my AI allies sit back while Shez did most of the work.
-- I feel like the Scarlet Blaze version was a bit harder, but then again that was on my first run and there's stuff to do (recruit Yuri during all the chaos) when compared to Azure Gleam's.
-- I guess the main difficulty is if an AI wanders into a stronghold, or if the player gives orders to start capturing early instead of trying to avoid the ambushes.

I also learned that Fiendish Blow seems to work well with the House Leader's Elemental Skills, but the "Essence of Element" is worthless unless one is actively using a combat art, magic, class action, or strong attack. (Class Actions and Strong Attacks are usually regulated to the spellcasters, although the Holy/Dark/Bow Knight/Mortal Savant have some elemental effects).
-- On that note, Essence of Darkness seems useless on Shez's unique class. Sure, some of the attacks are purple, but they are not actually Dark attacks. It only really has synergy if one uses Shadowblade or the Dark Magic spells.
-- Also, it sucks that the standard spellcasters don't seem to have Fiendish Blow and Essence of Element skills. Marianne, Hubert, Manuela, and Flayn seem to be the exceptions (Ice, Dark, Thunder, Light). Guess I need to figure out what magic can be taught so there can be more elemental synergy (managed to teach Hapi Dark Spikes, so she doesn't need to use the Relic Tome to get access. Shame she has no Dark Element though...)

As a random aside, I put on Sylvain's accessory on Shez while he's in his unique class. Annihilating the entire screen due to the extra range and damage is great, even though I lose access to the "shadow flash dash" skill. I since removed it since dashing around is a little more important than clearing screens, but its fun.

I outlined it on the wiki, but:

Spoiler

Alois's spawning is independent from Fleche's death. Fleche can be dealt with as early or as late as you please, her timing has no effect on Byleth recruitment.

You fail if even a single one of the mercs manages to enter the base camp. If any of them sets foot inside, Alois sends word to Byleth that they won't need any help attacking the south, so Byleth takes up post outside Randolph's stronghold instead and must be killed to proceed.

I've got a bit of a lore question. I don't remember if this was ever clearly established in Three Houses or Three Hopes, but... how were the Crests of Seiros and the 4 Saints passed on? Like, those with the crests of the 10 Elites are stated to be the descendants of the 10 Elites. But... like, I'm assuming Flayn has never had kids, right? I'm assuming Lindhardt isn't Flayn's descendant, right? So is it all through blood transfusions, like how Jeralt has the crest of Seiros because Rhea gave him her blood? But if so, do those blood transfusions pass on to their descendants (it didn't in Jeralt's case, Byleth doesn't have the crest of Seiros)?

Yeah, I read up the wiki before starting. Thanks for the guidance!

Spoiler

I was mostly worried about the "Trigger Ambush" fail condition. For me, it seemed as soon as Fleche dies (or maybe when Alois spawns), wandering into strongholds is no longer an issue.
-- Perhaps it was more tied to Alois spawning and saying "the ambush failed," so that's when its safe to go on the offensive. Alois just just happened to spawn after I defeated Fleche.
=== I just re-checked the wiki and noticed the "it is now safe to enter the ambush keeps." I remember reading that, but forgotten the exact moment that would occur. Guess the heat of battle got to me.

It makes sense if "Alois and company reach the Allied Base" being another fail condition, although I wasn't too worried about that.
-- Of course. there's "Byleth rendezvousing with Randolph," but that's more of a DPS Race than anything else. (Haven't checked this, but it makes logical sense.)

* * * * *

Meanwhile, in Scarlet Blaze, it's just capture the strongholds without killing the central guy, and DPS Race the ending.
-- At the time, I was worried about the DPS Race, especially since it was my first playthrough. I ended up A-Ranking the mission because I went a little too fast and didn't get the KO count up high enough.
== It sounds like Golden Wildfire is a bit of an escort mission, but I'll get to that once I start up that campaign. I'm tempted to jump straight into Maddening instead of doing a Hard playthrough first using my NG+ file.

They used their blood as Nabateans to give their crests to others and then those who received crests from them passed it down.

Byleth doesn't have the crest of Seiros because it is impossible for the body to naturally have two crests, and because he has Sothis' crest stone inside him, the crest of flames was the crest he inherited.

Okay, so the blood transfusions normally are inherited. Surprising, but intriguing. And yeah, that makes sense, without the shit that Lysithea and Edelgard went through you can't have two crests, and it makes sense that the Crest of Flames would take precedence over the Crest of Seiros. I wonder if that means Byleth's kids could hypothetically have either the Crest of Flames or the Crest of Seiros, I would assume so.

On the subject of Crests, it is a little annoying that the Crest Stones you purchase with renown are accessories now, unlike how they worked in Three Houses. Perhaps unavoidable since characters no longer really have an inventory, but having to use up your only accessory slot in order to utilize one of the Crest Stones is disappointing. I think they needed a secondary accessory slot that can only be used for Crest Stones or Merc Whistle items, it really feels like there's rarely a reason to use the Crest Stones unless you want to equip a Hero's Relic on someone with no Crest.

Yeah, the bloodline transusion crests are inherited. Note that it's not a guarantee, e.g. Caspar's father has a Crest but Caspar does not, while Ingrid is the only member of her immediate family with one. So Crests clearly behave like some other genetic traits where they can skip a generation or more easily enough, but still reappear later (if you've played Tellius, the Branded property worked similarly).

Byleth is a bit of a special case, since their Crest comes from Sothis's Crest Stone being physically implanted in them. I'm not sure if they could actually pass on the Crest of Flames as a result (but since it's all in headcanon territory, it's certainly possible if you want it to be).

Finished Azure Gleam yesterday, doing NG+ after my Scarlet Blaze run. Overall, it was another enjoyable story, although it does focus more on Kingdom politics instead of Dimitri himself (as in Three Houses). It's a shame we don't get to see AM Dimitri, but its understandable as circumstances are different.
-- Honestly, both stories enrich each other. Having knowledge of Three Houses drastically improves the storytelling as one can see other sides of these characters/conflicts. It's also fun to see the callbacks to Three Houses. (This is through supports and camp convos, not just the main story.) Heck, this doesn't even count the expanded lore and seeing characters and situations that were merely mentioned in Three Houses making actual appearances in Three Hopes.
-- As for going from Three Hopes to Three Houses, it'll be an interesting experience. I wonder what the new player reactions would be when seeing the original timeskip designs and storyline, while comparing it to Three Hopes.

Spoiler

I loved the parallels between AG and SB. Basically, they do have the same major conflicts, but the victor changes on the route.

1. Lonato's Fate (Saved on SB, Dies in AG)
2. Western Kingdom Fate & Arianrhod (Captured by Empire or Defended by the Kingdom)
3. Dominic and Pals (Loyalists on SB, "Turncoat" on AG)
4. The Imperial Rebellion (Quelled on SB, Successful on AG)
-- This is the Aegir and TWSITD attempted takeover of the Empire.
-- It also has some consequences, as Claude allies with the Kingdom in AG due to the state of affairs. Otherwise, Claude will normally ally with the Empire (in SB as well as GW, although I don't know the specifics of GW).
5. Showdown at Ailell & Garreg Mach (Climatic Showdown & Liberate vs Siege)

The only thing that made me question things was the ending. Dimitri just leaves the broken Edelgard there, and it's left up to the imagination of what happens. Do the Imperials rescue the Emperor and its up to Monica, Count Bergliez, and Count Hevring to salvage the Empire? Does the Kingdom soldiers take Edelgard in? Who knows, but if one did the hidden chapters, Dimitri helps Edelgard there but not at the ending.
-- I guess I'll chalk it up to it being a cutscene and making an alternative may have been a bit much, and there's also the apparent philosophy of "No Golden Ending." While it's nice to see the CG of Edelgard taking Dimitri's hand in the secret chapters, I still wished it was a cutscene and had more of a callback to the ending of Azure Moon.
-- That said, Dimitri being awesome and not caring about being hit with dark magic is amazing. He just shrugs it off as he advances to defeat Thales.

As for the final boss battle, I didn't get the chance to fully appreciate the dialogue due to my caution and being worried about not losing anyone. I spammed specials for invulnerability and to clean out enemy waves. It was effective, but does mess up the pacing.
-- I was not a fan of the Boss Invincibility Phases. I get why some use it as a mechanic, but when overused it definitely breaks up the pacing of the fight. I guess this is how they compensated for not having a "Monster" battle and were just plain "Officers," but I wish the gimmick was something more interesting.
== I managed to make it without deaths in AG, save for the one time the Death Knight somehow killed AI Felix (which prompted a battle restart).

I did recruit Byleth again on this route, and I wonder what major differences when one doesn't, as I know you lose Rodrigue (a playable character) and that the ending text changes that allude to the Alliance not being that unified with the Kingdom.
-- I hear that in SB, despite Randolph dying instead, it has more of an effect as Claude betrays the Empire during one of the chapter maps. So, there's a significant gameplay and story change here, although I imagine it's more about the overall implications.
== I guess the "major story changes" are more implications on what would happen on the grander scale instead of anything immediate, but I still need to do the "Kill Byleth" route to compare which I won't get around to for a while...

Now, off to the Golden Deer! After checking the stats on Maddening, its definitely seems more suited for an actual NG+ run of the same route as enemy levels picks up right after the finale on Hard Mode. Sure, one could attempt it on NG+ of a different route using the shared characters, as well as potentially trying it vanilla NG, but I think it's best for after the initial playthrough.
-- So, my 4th-6th round of playthroughs will be on Maddening and do the "Kill Byleth" route, use the female avatars instead of male, and going in reverse order. This means I'll be doing Golden Deer back to back, then the Blue Lions, and end with the Black Eagles.
-- I probably should find the time to grind out in Records so Arval gets the male-locked class skills, as my Shez now has mastered every class.

For a final note, Shez with Sylvain's personal is way too fun. Shez's unique class attacks fast, is mobile, and when paired with the Dark Creator Sword which doubles hits, it's extremely easy to reach the hitcounts and annihilate everything on the screen. Sure, I lose out on the small instant-defeat "dark spikes" and the "shadowflash dash," but being able to attack the entire screen with attacks that kill anyways is just better. Mobility is solved by switching to another character, spamming Strong Attack 3 on the Asura class, or just using the map teleport.
-- I need to try Sylvain's personal with the other unique classes, such as the House Leaders. Who knows how big the attack ranges can get on those!

Gotta admit, that was honest to god one of the most badass moments in this entire game. The guy is on my side, and I'm still incredibly intimidated by him after seeing that. It's like Dimitri is a freaking Terminator sent from the future to kill slitherers.

My head cannon immediately made up a scenario where Dimitri was told by someone that he already killed every member of TWSITD after defeating Edelgard at the end of AM. So he went back in time to murder them all again, but this time he'd know who they were when he did it.

It is amusing that Dimitri in AM blames Edelgard for the Tragedy of Duscur, and meanwhile he manages to get his revenge for the Tragedy without even realizing it, killing Thales and Cleobulus without even realizing who they really are.

Did anyone find it somewhat disappointing that all the new characters were revealed in the Demo? I was hoping we'd see some more, maybe say, Margrave Edmund, Counts Galtea and Vestra. I also think Baron Domonic and Count Rowe needed proper designs, they're a just little too important to just have generic designs, especially when Count Rowe is always shown next to Gwendal, who's importance comes from the count. And we were definitely teased with Cleobulus, seriously you can't just reveal that Cornelia is actually a guy without showing us! Or do they need DLC bait?

I agree with most of this, though Cornelia only ever appearing as Cornelia is consistent with Three Houses, where she only appeared that way even when doing experiments on Hapi in private. I definitely subscribe to the theory that Cornelia/Cleobulus is most likely trans and thus deliberately avoids appearing in her "male" body. Haven't played nearly all of Three Hopes yet, though, so I dunno if anything else sheds light on this.
