  1. Still some Genealogy Spoilers in this here box. Now you just need to get all the stars as Luigi 😛 . It really was a fun version of new game + That is a cute way to hint at this standard fantasy setting being a future one instead. This game is going on a list of games I will get around to playing... What a better world we would live in...
  2. Too real. I was always bad at saving as much as I should have as a kid...assuming it was possible to save the game at all that is. Much as I love Sonic 2, being a game before the save feature (a real selling point of Sonic 3) was rough on itty bitty baby me. Not to sell myself as older than I am, it was about a console generation old when I got to. Sorry GuardianSing, there be Jugdral spoilers aplenty in this here box. He truly was a legend. Yeah, getting him off the ground is tough. He does still have the utility of being able to give gold to people that he isn't married to (so letting him gather up the village loot can be a good plan), and he can still steal gold from foes if he can get in some safe chip. It was kind of funny how close you were to the revival staff when he died. Time for the otherwise niche warp staff to save the day. Take care, and we will welcome you on your return. I think Ephraim's gray stu-hood inspired more discourse than Eirika... Setting the bar rather low there 😛
  3. Eltosian is an old defunct fan translation of FE4's Eldigan's name, and Kadath is a reference to the works of HP Lovecraft, in particular The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, where Kadath is the unknown city that the gods of earth reside/hide in.
  4. Fair enough, the fact that they all stack is really stupid. Ah the statistical price of fashion. Well as they say, fashion souls is end game. (read in old person voice) Back in my day we had to make do with pencil, and paper. Eh... Judgral shows a bit of a complicated side to the old trope overall. Reinhardt certainly deserves the critique, and he even gets called out for that in game by August (and Dryas's opposing opinion makes for an interesting insight to the differences between their owns clashing systems of morality...but I digress, no reason to start ranting about Thracia's story early). Eldigan is a lot more conflicted with his role, and can be talked down into trying to oppose his king, just not with swords, only with words. Ishtar is a bit more complicated, using her role as villain to save people from within, kind of reminiscent of the Pope's relationship with the Nazi's during WWII, where he was able to save people from the holocaust by playing nice with the monsters. Its also important to note that before we even see Ishtar, the heroes have already killed her brother, and sister-in-law, and before her decision to ride out and face your forces in the end you have also added her father and mother to the kill count, and even Julius opines that she is riding out as a form of assisted suicide. Really I can't judge Ishtar too harshly for refusing to side with people that murdered her family. From what I remember Eldigan believed that rumors about Chagall usurping the old king were slanderous lies, which isn't the most unreasonable assumption given the pit of vipers that the Lords of Augustria are. Oof. As someone that has done a few screen shot LPs, I felt that viscerally. Reminds me of the time I was transferring images from phone to computer for the last linked ironman, and didn't notice there was an error until I already started deleting images from the phone... Oh wow, a death you are keeping...for now... Lol, Eldgian dies for being a centrist. I guess in a sense its true, as he was stuck between a rock and a hard place, between his love of his friends, and love of his homeland and couldn't decide which side to truly stand with. I am strangely reminded of a commentary on the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, that what kills them is that they are torn between too many obligation, to their feuding families to keep it secret, to the church to marry eachother, and their own love to do so with no other, and like Eldigan they are trapped in this middle until their untimely end.
  5. This makes the cowardly addition of warp to the Emblem all the more frustrating. Right here is a mechanic unique to Byleth that is interesting in the fog, without lazily Frankensteining two emblems together. Yeah, I was feeling that from the sidelines with the last lazy double emblem to keep a "gimmick" that fundamentally was just the Emblem you were facing originally. Oof, sorry the ironman ended so poorly. That is certainly how some will perceive it. Wait til you meet Lamia, and her all female mercenary band...well really Lamia is a much more minor character than Brigid, and I am probably the only one that cares about her in the slightest. Plus Brigid is fairly cool anyway. Curse Sigurd and his misogynistic view on gender roles. Eh, there is a bit of a difference between a bandit and a pirate, no matter what Lyn says 😛 I wasn't paying much attention to this youtube celebrity drama, having never had much interest in Chugga, and having completely ignored twitter a bit of the way into Elon's reign, but it is sad to see Lady Emily was dragged into all this nasty drama, especially after having to endure his unwanted attentions in the first place.
  6. Chance to cap matters a fair bit in Path of Radiance due to how the data transfer to Radiant Dawn mechanics work. One of the important things that occurs when you transfer data from Path of Radiance to Radiant Dawn is that any unit that reached their level cap in Path of Radiance, gets a +2 (or +5 for HP) to the base stat in Radiant Dawn, of any stat they capped in the Path of Radiance, with a handful of additional quirks added in there (most notably Sothe's transfer stats work very differently, but that is a bit off topic at this point).
  7. Stumbled your way into a torture room did you... The first one that comes to mind is the MGS games I guess. Its a recurring joke for the series to have a character named Johnny Sasaki to have a case of the shits, and characters using the restroom comes up a little more with things like noticing one of the soldier uses the lady's room being a hint for making contact with Meryl Silverburgh in MGS 1, or intentionally baiting people into eating rotten food to give em the shits in MGS 3 for instance... Its a bit different, but I like how the Persona games also allows your character to use the restroom. What is the name of this game again, I am getting a bit curious about it... It really is. Its been enough that I will keep my eye on it when it comes out, when otherwise it would probably not be on my radar.
  8. I know I am of the unpopular opinion that DS1 has aged poorly enough to be the weakest of the trilogy... Oh wow, they made sure this paralogue wasn't the utter joke it is in the base game. I am betting using a Corrin super to freeze her at three range to then pick off the added troops is going to be necessary for this one. Or simply overpowering her with all your perfectly accurate supers might work all on its own. Seeing that laziness in the latter maps has left me rather disappointed with the mod. Your child kicking adventure is rather amusing. Just out of curiosity, what happens to the NPCs after these fight? Two main reasons come to mind, the first is comparability with generation 1, and the second is space concerns. An important thing to remember about gen 2 is that Game Freak needed outside help from Satoru Iwata to make it possible to even fit the game onto the memory available for a GB cartridge.
  9. I am disappointed in the mod for this laziness. To be fair, you were effectively facing a double emblem this time, as they just added the most dangerous power of Micaiah on top of another emblem. Good work making it through that. Chaggall being a bit incompetent is just gameplay being true to the story. There are two predetermined pairings, Sigurd+Dierdre and Ethlyn+Quan, the others work kind of similarly to the GBA supports, but converstaions tend to have a notable impact on it as well. To get more into the weeds, Each eligible male and female pair have a starting love points (later recruits, and pairing pushed a little bit by the game tend to get fairly high starting love points), they also have an innate love growth rate that increase every turn the two are on the same map together, as well as +5 bonus for every turn they end adjacent, but love points stop accumulating after turn 50 of a map to prevent abuse. Additionally there are a lot of talk conversations that can increase love points, and some of those can be quite extreme. Finally there is a well known bug often called the Jealousy mechanic where if you have an eligible male wait next to an eligible female, who herself is adjacent another eligable female, the love points are given to one of the two women based on a priority list. Marriages are kind of important in Genealogy of the Holy war, and if you want some advice for pairing for power or story reasons, feel free to ask.
  10. One element that really should be added to the list, and whose absence is telling for the dissonance you are expressing, is Replayability. I do think it is an aspect that isn't really covered by the things you discussed, as at its core its about what you can get out of a game on subsequent playthroughs. It certainly is interconnected with other elements you discuss, just as Ludonarrative harmony is, but I do think it is distinct from the things you discuss as well, and an important factor for those whose opinions differ from yours. I feel like this is a bit of a complicated statement, as two sentiments I have seen on this forum immediately come to mind. The first is that Fates sacrificed its story for the sake of gameplay, and the second is that when Fates tells you Camilla is a badass warrior, the gameplay backs it up. The second is a bit specific, I know (I think it came up in a discussion of SoV and Fates about Mathilda and Camilla, and how the two of them are treated by their game's narrative), but it highlights why I am a bit reluctant to simply say Fates has a Ludonarrative dissonance problem, but more of just a story one in general, as I don't think the first statement is wrong either. Fates was simply very willing to have an incredibly stupid story, as long as it backed up its excellent gameplay, which was the star of the game. To be fair Fates was not perfect in regard it to its Ludonarrative harmony, it is more willing to back up what the story says in the gameplay, but wasn't the best with what is shown in the story, sometimes because of player choice; assuming the little sisters that start as healer (and work best mechanically as healers) would remain healers for a cutscene or two, and them pretending most player would put in the effort to make Azura competent at combat instead of keeping her as a far more useful dancer come immediately to mind; and in one notable instance where they used animations obviously based on the dual guard to show Lilith sacrificing herself. In fact Lilith's sacrifice in Conquest is an interesting story beat to look at from a ludonarrative perspective. The moment is often panned for how unsatisfying it is as a story beat, and despite the issue with the animation, the chapter itself did a good job of selling us the danger those Faceless posed on our army, with their infinite number being a key factor in their threat, with dangerous skills, and frustrating support of the stoneborn to force us into retreating. I find it one of the chapters signifying a ramp up in difficulty for the game, and I don't think I am alone in thinking so. The issue with the moment isn't a ludonarrative one, its simply a story one; Lilith dying to literal faceless enemy is unsatisfying in spite of the gameplay supporting the danger of those faceless, for very mundane story reasons. Overall I think Fates has a far more mixed relationship with Ludonarrative harmony than necessarily a bad one, and better than a lot of the post Kaga FE games, but its story being infamously bad has kept people from giving Fates its fair shake in this regard. Close, it was actually John Carmack who said that, but the two were the most well known figures of Id software back in its glory days, so I can see why you would confuse them. The complaints about FE7's story are such cinema sins levels of nitpicking, that they end up missing the forest for the trees. FE7's story really deserves more praise than it gets.
  11. Yikes, that is a hefty list of deaths there for a single chapter... The paralogues have been really rough on you. Perhaps you took them on a little earlier than you should have? Its hard to tell with some of these at times. Also you have lost a LOT of the magically oriented units. Best boys of Firene making it thr- Well at least my Bouchy boy is still leading the charge. They really couldn't figure out another way to handle this chapter. Kind of sad really. Might be a good idea to have the +50 crit avoid engrave around just in case. No one wants a dead Rosado. Oh wow, that unit I always forget about.
  12. So this was something going around the TeeHee thread (or I guess just Chat Thread now) about a year ago, and it was fun to create, think about, and share, so I figured I would start a thread in here too. The idea is to pick a type for your gym, and create a set of teams, based on when your gym is faced. As an example I will share the one I created back in the TeeHee thread as a Dragon-type Gym Leader so you get the idea (although I will be making a new one with another of my favorite types for this thread as well). 1st Gym Leader: Applin; Dratini (12) 2nd Gym Leader: Dreepy; Applin; Dratini (18) 3rd Gym Leader: Dratini; Flapple; Turtonator (24) 4th Gym Leader: Flapple; Drampa; Dragonair (30) 5th Gym Leader: Flapple; Tatsugiri; Dragonair; Vibrava; (36) 6th Gym Leader: Cyclizar; Dragonair; Vibrava; Tyrantrum(42) 7th Gym Leader: Dragonair; Cyclizar; Flygon; Komo-o; Dragalge (48) 8th Gym Leader: Duraludon; Dragalge; Kingdra; Flygon; Komo-o; Dragonite (55) The number I put in parenthesis was roughly the level I expected for each gym, and while I like the level curve described, you don't need to follow it. You could even go more hard core than me and determine movesets for your teams as well. I didn't add too many aesthetic details at the time (other than an epic cape being an obligatory part of the costume), but it would be fun to describe your gym leader as well if you want. Now for a new Gym leader of the Ghost typing just for this thread. 1st Gym Leader: Litwick, Sinistea (12) 2nd Gym Leader: Drifloon, Poltchageist, Misdrevious (18) 3rd Gym Leader: Corsola (Galarian), Sabeleye, Frosslass (24) 4th Gym Leader: Rotom, Driflblim, Brambleghast, (30) 5th Gym Leader: Haunter, Doublade, Trevenant, Runerigus (36) 6th Gym Leader: Lampent, Jellicent, Sinistcha, Polteageist (42) 7th Gym Leader: Spiritomb, Golurk, Mismagius, Zoroark (Hisuian), Annihilape (48) 8th Gym Leader: Basculegion, Dhelmise, Chandelure, Aegislash, Mimikyu, Gengar (55) I must admit, it was a bit bold to have no repeat pokemon (although a few repeat lines in there). This gym leader be a small bean with an oversized hoodie that leaves their face shaded in darkness and with hands together, when things go well in the battle, you can see the glow of what look like eyes from within the dark hood, and an ominous mist rises up to wisp up in front of the face, but when things go poorly in battle you get a glimpse of the great cup of tea in hand (hidden otherwise by oversized sleeves), and glasses slip a little into the light, until the battle is lost and the hood flies off, revealing white hair, and bespectacled face with the weary bags of one that does not get enough sleep.
  13. An interesting reminder of how we have been subtly trained to biased the global north. Oh is he getting effective damage from Mulagir or something? Yeah that complicates things a LOT. Can you bait her into equipping the raiper as the only viable weapon for her mediocre super? At least she still has to pick a single range. Taking him down with chain attacks isn't all that surprising considering how tanky Ike makes units Chain attacks really came in clutch this chapter I see Good work, and in all likelihood, a good use of the staves. Oh wow, you waited this long to clear the arena on this chapter? It is rather fitting that you recruited him with Ayra though. Yeah, Sylvia conversations can get kind of weird. Her chapter 5 lovers talk with Alec is probably the most infamous... Yeah, when some of the weaker units, like Sylvia and Dew find a way to win in the area with dodge tanking, it makes you glad you have speed up...especially if their foe is also a bit dodgey. It also prevents talking with sleeping units, with the one extremely convenient exception of green units being allowed to talk to sleeping/silenced red units.
  14. Alas the poor prince is still one of the most benchable units in the game, only this time his bench is a bit more permanent. Yeah, that fog of war map, and the shifting tides map are both rather dangerous, both places I lost units on my first ironman... Sounds annoying, but not all that different from her original performance, more a shift from the certain lost attacks of Roy to probabilistic lost attack, and a far greater incentive to deal with her before any nearby ally (which isn't a huge change really). Probably more dangerous than the Mauvier version, although that is mostly because he isn't using staves on this map. Eh, sounds like a downgrade to me. Sigurd makes her extra dangerous, and if she has the same cautious AI like in the normal hard mode, it should be easy to deal with her all on her lonesome. That is an interesting change, and will probably change the dynamic from him suicidally overextending, into you baiting his lackies into overextending instead. It will be different, but I am not all convinced it would lead to a more difficult encounter, just one you have to play differently. Huh, like his first appearance in the real game then. A fitting change, but he didn't exactly make the best showing with that emblem in the main game...but it can surprise you with so long of range, so its hard to say. Alright that one is probably a fair bit more dangerous. Honestly a lot of these sound more like side grades, with the big danger being that this will drastically change up how this chapter normally plays, so you can't rely on more tried and true methods If they lived, they would have suffered the foul fate of becoming green units.
  15. That is a sweet shiny to get. Oh that is a bit of a pickle...Do you have Roy at least so you have a super that can change the terrain under an enemy's feet at least? That works too. A lot more costly than Corrin's version, but creative uses of the Emblems you have to solve that one. That sounds like a terrible trade... Shame its going to take a while before you get that Lyn emblem for her. Also it sounds like you want to pack the Fracture staff so you can break the Wyrms for a free hit on them. Sounds like chain attack, and knife debuff time...plus a lot of healing after the fact. BIG oofs. Forgot to bring his sister for the -5 enemy crit rate range, or was she simply too unusable...
  16. I wonder if Fallout New Vegas would count. The game is all about a clash of political forces trying to take over the Mohave waste land, the Hoover Dam, and the titular New Vegas, and whether it will fall under the control of the more democratic New California Republic, the more fascist regime of Caesar's Legion, the sickeningly corporate ideals of Mr. House and his New Vegas, or if you are narcissistic enough to pretend you would be a good benevolent dictator with the help of Yes-Man. The main cop-out here is that the player character is unreasonably competent, but that is a bit of a standard for videogames in general. It really is a great game, and its opening does a good job setting things up a bit as a clash of political ideals. The Jeigan died too. That is a rough stretch for an ironman. But it does leave room for my Bouchy Boy to save the day. Let him lead the team. Part 4's enemies are the cultiest cult the series has ever had, they just pretend the cult isn't Dark She was a part of the cult, if you take the B route through the cursed forest instead of the A route on the high road, you recruit her before she gets hit by the amnesia bat, and its a bit more apparent. But they just did that with Engage's Four Hounds
  17. I kind of figured they were banned because they are acting like the main Corrin's personal skills, as their actual personal fails to function in a Corrinquest due to the lack of supports with the other "Corrins" No worries, I notice the error already, but forgot to comment on it by the time I got around to posting about my entry, so I already have both personal skills equipped.
  18. Ah the great green lemmings do their thing. A bit of a shame, as them living gets you a trinket at the end of the chapter, but its enough of a pain that its rarely worth bothering with, and in practice basically means you are hiding Lachesis somewhere far in the back where she can't get any experience, which is a bit of a downside as she has one of the strongest promotions in the franchise, if you can get her the experience to reach it. Its one of those things that the large maps end up facilitating, and a bit of why I like them. In a surprise to nobody, the manga ran with this line all the way into a painful incest hell. A least you got a new recruit out of it. In a sense not so unseen in FE4, as they get a salary based on the number of blue castles you control at the end of every map...
  19. Huh, I feel like I would remember that skill if it were in the base game... He isn't, Salem's class is called a Loptyrian priest, as an appropriate name for the first dark mage. Ced might not be on the level of August Drias and Saias, but you are selling him fairly short there. Yeah, that fog od war map is rough, and the first place I would expect to see a death on an Engage ironman Oof, that is rough buddt. And poor Anna is such a fresh recruit too. Although I have found Ivy to be a bit of a crit magnet, so I am not all that surprised by that death, although she is a really strong unit to lose. A third death on that one map. A real massacre there. Thankfully you are still in Engage's drown you in strong prepromotes stage of things. Thracian healers missing is one of the most overblown things people complain about in that game.
  20. The first 6 chapters cover roughly 3 years, so about 6 months passing between chapters is the average... Oh you have not gotten around to playing Crusader Kings yet, and known the hassle of ambitious vassals, or being that ambitious vassal, knowing your incompetent king is the biggest hurdle to you running a country of your own. Also he does say he is raiding the king's property, and if the king is controlling lands that by all rights should be yours, raid away, and show everyone why you should be the one in control of it, considering the king is too busy with other affairs to properly defend it. You sell it in pawn shop, or keep it strategically as inheritance you otherwise couldn't give to your child (as you can only buy weapons you can use...) They knew how terrible archers are in FE, and wanted to give the best impression of them they could. While you do get a trinket for rushing fast enough to protect the village that will first fully burn, it really isn't that big of deal. Fun fact, when I was looking back at the older translation with Eltosian in it, the skill was translated as Duel, which I find to be a rather fitting name for the skill. Lucina really has the worst super... On the one hand, I don't think the AI can use that skill all that effectively, but it is still scary none the less.
  21. Alright, I have a level 10 Corrin ready for you. Sorry, that is just the level I reached soloing with Corrin before the online features unlocked...I probably should have held back a little, but I didn't notice the level 7, 8 and 9 addition at the bottom of the chart until I was writing this up, and as such level 9 or 10 was what I was shooting for in the mean time. That also means you get E rank Axe, and learn the base skills in the next two levels, because that was the first time I got access to reclassing. Note, if you want/need a higher level Corrin, I can definitely continue the save file on. Named: Eltosian K Class: Wyvern Rider Level: 10 (chapter 10) Primary Skill: Shuriken Breaker Secondary Skill: Inspiration HP: 25 LCK: 5 STR: 10 MAG: 9 SPD: 12 SKL: 12 DEF: 12 RES: 2 Castle Address: 05131-41162 01294-92339
  22. Really they expected you to use the online features to pick up a few foreign resources when you needed them, and the system works just fine if you are able to use those mechanics. At least the translation I was drawing on didn't translate Sigurd that way. It was still in the era where Erin was Fury, Midir was Midale, Quan was Cuan, Seliph was Celice, Ced was Sety, the Forseti was Holsety, the Yewfelle was still the Ichival, Ares was Aless, etc. I could keep going, as I still have the old rom with that nearly complete translation patch attached to it, but those are some notable differences. Seeking out the 108 stars of destiny I see. It is a good enough suggestion, as the series tends to blend genres a little, with almost base building feel to some of the recruitments, and sections with tactic game mechanics to them. Although my main knowledge of the series is from Suikoden 2. I have seen the first described similarly enough to the description below the second image by enough capital G gamers, that I don't think it is that sharp of difference. A surprisingly fitting problem to have considering the previous discussion about localization. Too many old translations like that were satisfied with mere direct translations, unwilling to make the changes needed to spice up the script, or successfully capture the feel of comedy. Don't get me wrong, some put in the effort.
  23. The multi-part chapter 17 of Path of Radiance did something similar to that. Each part lets you add 2 reinforcement units, which you chose from the menu between each part, and arrive on turn three of that part of the map.
  24. I think its a joke about Fate's Xander... I am fairly certain that is one of the bugs the project Naga translation patch fixes. From what I remember they also fixed the bugs related to certain things not being updated until you reload a save (not a save state, and actual in game save), so no more worrying about the dancer event freezing the game, and you don't need to load a save to give Seliph the leadership stars he should (instead of having Sigurd's until). I am not sure about the jealousy priority list updating as well, I think it is, but I don't remember if they specified in any of the patch notes like the other two, but it is the same type of bug... Thracia 776 implies there is at least one more recipient, although it is doubtful it came from the same lake... You've got to train her, this is an ironman and her personal reduces enemy crit chances!
  25. I stole his name for a reason 😛 Shanan is Ayra's nephew (remember in an earlier scene Shanan called Ayra his aunt), Ayra's brother (and Shanan's father) ascended the throne after their father's death. You need someone to be the fall guy, hence of the tales about the vizier being evil, but definitely not the ruler being evil... You can't linger within them like you can with the starting castle, and it has all the same stuff as the starting castle, but it is a nice thing to visit if you need some repairs, or sell your equipment to an ally, or something mid map. Yeah, there are some arena battles that can take a while. Fun fact, if you are playing on a version without the project Naga translation patch, an exceptionally long battle like this can cause an interesting bug. If the battle went on too long, the list of RNG the game sets up by the game before a battle would run dry, the game had a way of dealing with that for the basic parts of the battle, but if you leveled up you wouldn't have the RNs left to gain any stats, and even stats that have growth rates above 100 wouldn't gain even the single point that is certain. You could avoid the consequence of this glitch by using the B button just before the battle would end to access the menu section, and chose to continue instead of quit, which would reset the RNG list. On the other hand, Sigurd has already rescued her, and is actively still invading Verdane... Oh boy, he must have proced...actually I don't remember what translation of the name is in vogue, charge? Accost? Its an odd skill, requiring the user have over 25 health, with a proc rate based on current health, and how much faster than your foe you are, and it will not proc more than 19 times (...I think, it cutting off like that might be related to a bug relate to the RNG string running out that the translation parch fixes, and seeing more than 5 procs is astronomically unlikely) in a single battle, as it is causing an extra rounds of battle to occur with each proc, so if this foe could counter, it would have the opportunity to do so with each extra round. Fun fact, there is alternate dialogue if you managed to kill Sandima before Sigurd triggers her recruitment, and tells you some interesting information about herself. In case you are curious I dug up a video from a commentated Youtube LP that shows it in the spoiler box below I see you took my advise about the Secret Events. It is a classic allusion to one of Aesop's fables honest woodcutter. That really is a fun touch about the staff. The Jugdral magics really do go all out on the animations.
