I have the opposite problems with the classic cav pairs. My strength cav always ends up getting blessed in spd by one or two points and then they start ORKOing everything in existence and their level goes up like a rocket. I generally struggle with the Lances and Kents of FE because either they get screwed in spd and don't double at all (while only having the str to 3HKO which results in 3 rounding stuff) or even if they stick to their averages their exp gains are bad enough from not killing stuff that they fall behind anyway.

And that's how things like Sain being 10 levels higher than Kent and having massive leads in everything happens.

On VBA I sometimes use ctrl + B to rewind before the attack and then make random paths in the hope of getting some important stat. I try not to do it until a unit gets very far under their average in important stats. Like if Sue falls 2 below her spd or str average. Or when Celice falls 4 below his spd average (though that's more switching weapons in the arena to use a different # of RNs before he levels or sending someone else into the arena). Seriously, my Celice and Leaf are masters at getting spd screwed. Worse than nearly any unit I've ever used. I think they hate me a lot.

I tried the rewind toggle but it didn't work for me. Not that it matters much since I mostly use savestates to ensure someone didn't get badly screwed over.

Speaking of that, I've noticed a lot of my units in my Sealed Sword playthrough are getting defense screwed. With the exception of Roy, Rutgar, Bors, and Miredy(who are all at their average or slightly above it), all my physical units are 1-3 points below their simple defense average for their level. As a vague example, my 20/12 Dieck has 12 defense, which is 3 below his defense average for that level. On average, he should have 15 def by 20/12. Alan and Gonzales are both 2 below their def averages for their level, and while Lance and Shin are def screwed slightly, it isn't as bad as the other three's(lol1 below average). Now, I honestly couldn't give a rat's shit about the def of my magic dudes(since it's not like I'm going to have them eat an enemy counter.), but Ray is 1 above his average for def at 20/11.

EDIT: My Ephraim mode Gen!Gilliam and my Oswin got skill screwed the first time I played either game. IIRC, Oswin had 15 skill at 20/20, which is 5 below his expected 20 skl average for that level(he was also luck screwed by 4 points.) Same with Gilliam before I bought 5 secret books on Creature Campaign(he had 15 skl before I applied the secret books, well below his 20.25 average.) The low skill was actually a problem since I had those two main axes for their entire promoted career(and we all know that axes can have shaky hit.) At least Bors didn't end up like that.

when you are dealing with 20% growths, it's a fair bit easier to get def screwed than blessed.

Take Lance. His level 16 average is 9 def.

0.04 0.13 0.23 0.25 0.19 0.10 0.04 0.01

his chance of having 8 def or less is ~40%. His chance of having 10 def or more is ~34%. It's just easier to end up lower than your average when your growth is under 50%.

I've learned to just not rely on concrete defense in this game unless the unit is someone like Hector or Oswin. My units are too prone to ending up multiple points below their Def average, and since I played this game at least twenty times before Sacred Stone even came out, that was probably what prompted me to lean towards dodge-tanks as opposed to concrete tanks.

And then there are units like my Lyn who has as much def as Hector because she's blessed and he's screwed. It's funny. She has 16 def to start chapter 31x. So does he. Sure, she's got a 6 level lead, but no way should they be so close. She's even got 18 res. My Lyn is way blessed for 20/13. Well, skill is a little down, but she's got so much skill despite being -4 to her average and an A Florina support (+15 acc, when Florina isn't busy taking out swarms of mages elsewhere with javelins or axe users with swords) so it doesn't much matter.

Oh well. At least Hector is spd blessed. 21 at 20/7.

I get the impression that Laus is kind of like Red Herring, in that Hector always says it’s them and it never is.

Fun fact: Pegasus Knights are a plurality of enemies in this chapter. Because when I think “bandit,” the first image that springs to mind is one of a woman riding a flying horse.
