I’ve never seen anyone argue Kaga good map design, just Kaga bad in general.

His other games are mixed bags. Berwick Saga has like, one bad map and everything else ranges from fine to absolutely amazing.

...maybe I should just replay Berwick Saga.

Ah yes, that phase where work seems to be the only thing that matters in life.

Then you realize you wasted your time because work is not living.

Or maybe I'm just a lazy bum talking out of his ass. I'm lucky enough that I've never had to work, after all... To the point where I'm so sick of studying that I'd like to see if working is so much worse.

Meh.

My work experience is pretty limited, as i spent most of my time studying, but i will say this: This is not how i wanna live until i am an old grandpa. That's not life, that's being a robot. Like, work itself was not bad, but every week was the same thing. Monday - friday work, rest on weekend and do home chores, repeat.

Meh. If i can save enough money a few years down the line, i am retiring asap. That's a big If though xD

I will say this, back then before my Illness i was doing every thing super fast and i had a clear goal: PhD. Then Illness put like a 3 year break on my plans, and right after i resumed studying Corona happened.

Now i am not so sure about PhD anymore, even though it used to be my main goal xD. Illness really made me rethink everything.

I will go visit my Parents soon and talk with them over my future and take their suggestions into consideration, now that i got my Master degree. Corona already destroyed all my plans anyway...

But yeah, to the younglings over here, don't go all serious mode and enjoy your lives while you can.

Thanks for the life advice, Shrimpy-senpai.

Odessa recruited! Now she can be a cardboard cutout on my ship who walks around and says nothing.

How big a wall of text would I get if I ask what he does in that game map design wise that’s absolutely amazing?

I think the best thing about Berwick honestly is how the turn mechanic works. I don't think the map design is super amazing (especially the midgame lull can be meh depending on your playstyle), but coupled with the turn system and some amazing mechanics, there's alot of fun to be had

You think going full serious mode will make you enjoy life?

If I don’t go full serious mode I might end up in an unenjoyable position after school.

Although we may need to define full serious mode. 😂

Let's see, hmmm

I was the type to study math after midnight while i was your age...

Sure, me enjoying math is the main reason i did it, and why i chose my path of study, but i don't think anyone with a sane mind would do this lol

I don’t really study. 😬

But I’ve never felt like I had to.

In a few words, the maps in Berwick Saga offer numerous diverse challenges, unique objectives and interesting curveballs.

Now I'll give you the long version. Let me explain myself with an example.

Oj68gcat o

That's chapter 3-main (excuse the quality of the screenshot, the game looks better than that I swear), where you have to escort three weak old priests who each take different roads. The upper path is covered by archers and hidden thieves that can only be reached by climbing cliffs, which aren't easy to get through. The middle path is besieged by pirate reinforcements from across the lake (you can block the fort and stop them, however), and there is little room to maneuver unless you know how to swim (only one unit does). The southern path is the easiest, with weaker enemies and more open terrain, but the priest is on his way to an unbeatable boss that needs to be removed via a special event by one of your units before he gets there, so you have to hurry a bit.

You also have to beat the priests to their ultimate destination, as there's a (mobile) boss waiting there that you'll have to kill before they reach him. Only one of the priests has to make it to the end, but each offers a special reward if they survive. You also also have to look out for searching points where you can get items (one of which can only be accessed by the previously mentioned swimmer), as well as a recruitable and a bounty target that arrive late, and a hunter hidden in the forest near the southern road that has to be spoken to by Ward, your Jeigan.

Together, all of these challenges and objectives make for a dynamic map where you have to spread your forces thin and plan your moves wisely.

And this is what I like best about Berwick's main maps. They're dynamic, they're complex. There are some simpler maps, of course. Those tend to be the sidequests. But even in those, you'll usually have a couple of goals to work toward, a couple things to look out for. Here, have an example of those.

8ixclsho o

In this map, rogues have taken over a village and are stealing its food supply. You need this food for the owner of Navaron's restaurant. You'll want to catch up to the rogues (they come out of the house in the middle) before they escape, for the more food you bring back, the higher the reward. But there are tough enemies around, designed to slow you down, topped by a hidden archer with Overwatch (attacks when a unit walks by, unit loses turn if hit) that will stop any units in their tracks. After they're down, you need to kill the brigand boss (blue vest guy on the fort) and seize the fort to end the map... Or, you can try your luck and confront the Imperial squad hanging out on top of the hill. They're far stronger than the brigands and they all have fancy equipment, but their leader drops a valuable crafting material, and hey, experience is always nice.

All in all, it's great design, far more than just "move forward and kill things." Again, there are a couple of duds here and there, but overall, Berwick Saga's got some great and entertaining maps that are long without feeling long. Plus, as Shrimpy said, coupled with Berwick's mechanics they become even better.

I hope this wall of text has been to your satisfaction.

Actually disagree. Unless you're looking to get into the super prestige universities, don't worry about it.

I feel ya.

Well, math is the exception but my issue with math is that i can study it, go "yeah this makes sense", and then i take the test and i completely forget everything. It's actually super frustrating how bad my information retaining abilities are when it comes to math considering i can remember everything else just fine.

If i have something against Berwick's Map design, it's the fucking Snow Map and the 24 turn save green unit maps (aka wait simulator until turn 20). Early and Late game are legit great, though

I don't think anyone likes the snow map. A shame, because aesthetically it's super pretty, but then the map itself...

The 24 turn green maps thing is more of an uncommon opinion, I feel, but it's fine. I do kinda agree that chapters 6-main and 8-main are rather uneventful until the end, but chapter 4-main, for example, never feels like a waiting simulator to me.

I wanna know what he was thinking with that, honestly xD

Chapter 4 is the best one of them, yeah, but even that one punishes the player for clearing stuff fast because all the good stuff appears ~turn 20. I was ready to retreat at turn 15 or something, but i decided to wait because of a quest item and suddenly all good stuff appears.

Ch 3, which is one of my favs., mind you, also has the problem with stuff appearing post turn 20.

It's a problem Kaga also has in FE5, though, when late reinforcements in some maps appear with good stuff. I hate that, honestly, punishing the player for playing fast.

For math you shouldn't memorize, you need to understand

While I agree, I have to know what I'm doing if I'm to understand it. And I can't understand if I don't remember.

Because math is so abstract, I have a hard time doing either.

Oi! That guy's unironically one of my favs. The characterization he gets in FE12 is rather great. Plus, unremarkable as he is, he's a step above the other lategame shitters that game has to offer, simply because C staves.

Yes, as we've discussed before, this is a valid concern. It doesn't affect me much at all, personally, but I understand where you're coming from.

Considering the Athenian guy who wants me to kill one of Sparta’s best generals seems to have some good sources to know my name before ever meeting me and to travel to the other side of Greece to get their, I wonder if he’ll find out that I burned Athenian war supplies, stole a national treasure of theirs and killed a bunch of Athenian soldiers to accomplish his mission.

Oh well, I’ve been light spoiled so I probably won’t accomplish his mission anyway.

Sure. Though BS FE still has you wait half an hour for him to join you.

Honestly though, Berwick is great and everyone should give it a try.

And if you all remember i used to be a big sceptic before i decided to try it haha

You missed the part where i said i didn'T study japanese language, right? xD

''San'' is a name suffix. It's kinda like how we use Mr./Ms. over here.

Han i dunno, but seems like a dialect thing, but not sure
