Apparently this should make my computer faster. A friend keept itching me about disinstalling the programs that kept opening up by itself on startup. Those antiviruses were most likely viruses themselves.

The only good thing I feel is a sense of cleanliness and organization on my computer.

How2safecomputar, by Zahlman.

* Don't be an idiot.

* Pick up the kind of knowledge you get as a ROM hacker: know what file-types are executable, know how to inspect file contents with a hex editor and verify that things are what they say they are (the first few bytes of most common file types have very distinctive patterns).

* Do as much as possible on an account that does not have administrator privileges. When you log in to your computer, you should be signing in to an account that does not have administrator privileges. You want to see a prompt that requires a password every time you do configuration stuff like installing programs, because you want to be consciously aware of and consenting to every such change.

* Read prompts in installers and don't fucking install anything you weren't looking for to begin with. Toolbars are the devil and you have no use for them.

* Keep everything up to date with security updates from the software authors. On Windows, use Windows Update.

* Get a pop-up blocker and stuff like that (I use Noscript for Firefox).

* Get one AV from a trusted source and make sure you're actually using it. Microsoft Security Essentials is fine (and comes bundled into Windows 8; what used to be the very limited "Windows Defender" now includes all of MSE in Windows 8 and all you might have to do is disable any trial OEM antivirus you got and enable Windows Defender).

* Don't fucking trust the contents of any window you ever see on your screen if you didn't deliberately take an action to cause that window to be on your screen or unless you *know* it comes from the operating system (e.g. tray notifications). Especially not if it's trying to tell you that you have viruses and shit on your computer. This is the biggest social engineering trick out there.

* Don't be an idiot.

More on topic, Zahl's advice is legit. Though "Don't be an idiot" sums up a lot of stuff. Stay off shady sites and don't doenload things from sites you don't trust.

Listen, dickhead, you haven't been here long enough to use my name like that.

I'm afraid it doesn't work that way, silly. If you post lots of silly topics, everything is fair game. Why not cool off with a nice sandwich? inb4soulmakesasandwichtopic

Still, what Xin posted was kinda unnecessary.

No! Only a CHUMP would go for soup! Sandwiches are where it's at!

Does a sub sandwich count as a sandwich? Only then will I accept a sandwich over soup!

Oh and grilled cheese and variants.

Of course a sub is a sandwich, it's something between bread! I do admit I am partial to leek and potato soup, as well as chicken.

zahlman got most of it. Last one is. . .

Use your common sense. Free lunch is almost never free.

Lastly, I think EVERYONE should treat each other better. Period.

A while ago I was installing something fairly simple, but rushed a bit and didn't uncheck a toolbar,

and now my url bar searches off askjeeves instead of google, and I'm too lazy to fix it even though askjeeves is useless roughly 20% of the time.

This was based on a true story.

EDIT-Also there is a blue line across the middle of my screen because the LCD contacts are off, the top usb hub of my laptop doesn't work except with my external harddrive, the bottom usb hub only works with my mouse, and etc. If anyone wants to help me fix the LCD screen let me know!

I use IE and don't know what it is.

You'd probably think I'm making this up just to oppose and make your point, but I am dead freaking serious.

please soul

have mercy on your web-browsing experience and download chrome (or firefox, whichever you prefer~)

please
