After some time passes, eventually everyone in the group takes advantage of the free hospitality that the innkeeper offers and gets ready to set out the next day...

Daryl and Tara reappear when the group is assembled.

XB2S15Y.gif"To those willing to follow me, I managed to get us some transport for those of us who don't have any," he said, glancing at Helen and Sophia.

XB2S15Y.gif"We'll be cutting through the mountains, and while the terrain is a little rougher, it'll take us far less time."

Tara was slightly out of earshot, but she got the gist of why Daryl kept coming back to meet this group.

kKCyIlc.gif "We're bringing them along with us? They'll just slow us down."

Daryl turned and looked at her with stern eyes.

XB2S15Y.gif"Hush, Tara, we saw that we're going to need more than just the two of us to cross these mountains. I'll appreciate any help we can get."

kKCyIlc.gif "Hmph. I'm heading out first, then."

Tara leaves.

Daryl sighed and stands up.

XB2S15Y.gif"Well, shall we get going, ourselves? There's no blacksmiths nearby, and I'm afraid I couldn't really find that much in terms of equipment, but I did find this lying about."

Daryl gives a Slim Sword to Sophia.

XB2S15Y.gif"I noticed you didn't have anything to defend yourself, so you can have this. Hopefully you can use it."

"Thank you." She gave the sword a few practice swings. "I know a bit about how to use swords, but I've never had to defend myself with one." Hopefully that little bit of training would be enough.

"It's good to see you're more amiable than your friend, Daryl." said Ashok as Tara left. "No matter, of course, we're all still ready to go with you. Perhaps she'll warm up to us after we prove ourselves. But yes! Unless anyone has any objections, we should be ready to leave." He was ready for this, or at least, he hoped he was.

Kris had all of his gear ready, "I'm all ready, if the gold keeps coming then we should just be able to supply ourselves. Another town should have a blacksmith in it where it'll be possible to resupply on weapons if anyone needs to." The mercenary commented.

"If you want I'll help you out with learning to use that thing a bit later once we have some free time, a little bit of sword practice isn't ever a bad thing." He told Sophia, regarding her new weapon

Calden searched out the Pegasus Knight, before they had to leave.

"Good morning Helen. Here's your ring back." he handed it to her. "There you go. I managed to lift all of the magic defiling this ring, we won't have to worry about any bad luck spells anymore. Unfortunately... I also ended up dispelling the magic as well. Take this, as a small apology." He once again mentally cursed the soldier for forcing him to part way with his gold, but it was a must.

Calden had used the Energy Ring and gives Helen 150 gold.

"It still makes a nice trinket eh? Think of it as a lucky charm." he turned away from Helen, and confirmed that he was ready to go.

"We're going through the mountains, then? If you wish, I can head in front of the group to scout anything, since the terrain won't be an issue to me." Helen spoke as Daryl finished his explanation, already prepared to take part in the job as intended. Packing up all the needed gear was second instinct for the trade, and her pegasus was already fed.

It was shortly after that Calden showed up with her ring and some sum of money, which was pretty surprising. "Oh, thanks, that's awfully nice, shame it was dispelled. It was a magic ring so I figured you'd make good use of it, since you're coming along to fight. Well, thanks anyways, I'll keep it~" That was a very kind gesture in her eyes, it seemed he wasn't that snarky or shady in the end. She figured her luck was right in trusting him the ring.

Daryl nodded at Ashok after he spoke about Tara.

XB2S15Y.gif"She's reckless, but good enough to back you up in a fight. I'm sure she'll be fine with you all after we get going... I hope, at least."

After Helen offered her scouting services, Daryl shook his head.

XB2S15Y.gif"That shouldn't be necessary. After all, we really should stick together around the mountains. Eslon hasn't been able to stamp out the marauding bandits and thieves around the area."

After everyone had gotten their preparations ready, the group set out towards the southern Gorian Mountains afterwards, caught up with Tara, and the beginning of the trip was fairly uneventful. The mountain had a valley pass, and this generally was where various merchants and adventurers would pass through, if they did at all. There was some civilization around here, though it was mostly independently controlled.

Tara was also escorting Owen, though he was currently being detained.

XB2S15Y.gif"He has given us some important information, it seems there is no love lost between him and Cabaria."

While they were travelling, Daryl explained how currently the Eslonian leaders were currently in a state of chaos. They were bringing a good portion of their army to defend against the inevitable invasion attempt, but had no idea whether it was going to occur above or below the mountains, so had stationed their troops to the west pass. It looked as though their skirmish at Anchorage and Owen's confessions had determined where their next move was going to be.

They were eventually approached by a man, who seemed to be a villager from the area.

F6yLj1e.gif "Excuse me, I have something to ask all of you. Would you happen to be Eslonian military?"

kKCyIlc.gif "I suppose you could call us that, yes."

XB2S15Y.gif "What would you ask of us?"

F6yLj1e.gif "Please, can you help me? Lately, there have been numerous bandit attacks by a man called Sayl on peaceful villagers and shops around the area. They've even took several people prisoner!"

XB2S15Y.gif "I'm not quite sure we have time for tha--"

kKCyIlc.gif "Captain! It wouldn't take much time at all, surely!"

Daryl glanced at her, and sighed. Once again, her recklessness made an appearance.

kKCyIlc.gif "This would be perfect for testing the newbies, as well!" reasoned Tara, glancing back at the rest of the group.

XB2S15Y.gif "Well... I suppose. I don't like to see people suffering. Though I can't say that's entirely the reason you want us to, Tara."

Tara smirked.

kKCyIlc.gif "You know me too well, Captain. C'mon, this is a chance to take down some bandit scum! They usually run when they see us!"

Daryl pondered for a second, and turned back to the group. He frowned, slightly.

XB2S15Y.gif "Well, does anyone have any objections?"

"Killing bandits is what I do, gotta say I expected something different from normal mercenary life rather than just doing the same old same old with a few ruffians." Kris commented.

"Well, I..." Ashok spoke up and caught himself, not sure what to say. "I suppose we should. Especially if they've got prisoners. Perhaps they've some stolen things we can get back for the villagers as well. This detour won't take us off track for more than a day or two; that's nothing, I'm sure."

Ashok did his best to remain at his strangely optimistic level of happiness, but even he was feeling the same thing as Daryl, and starting to question if Tara could do anything other than fight. He could at least bring himself to appreciate her enthusiasm, even if he thought it was directed poorly.

"Hmm, bandits huh? Well, I suppose they can't be that harder than an army. Besides, if it helps the group get used to battling together, doing this good deed wouldn't be too derailing." Said Helen, mostly going with the flow. Fighting bandits and thieves weren't uncommon in Causil, so she wasn't too concerned about it. If some bandits proved too much, what could they hope to do against an army? Edited by Xin'dy

"I would prefer if we did something about this... bandits are the type to attack without discrimination, without remorse... they'll kill anyone at all, if it'll give them the kicks and line their pockets. Not exactly the most savoury of people." Lenora chimed in, before brandishing her lockpick and twirling it about a tad.

"Besides... you said that the armouries of the Eslonian military do not quite reach this far? Perhaps we might be able to lift some equipment from some unlucky bandit stores... not like they'll need it after they receive their justice."

F6yLj1e.gif "It shouldn't take that long, honestly. Really, it's only a short ride up to that mountain pass, there, and then the path should take you to a hideout. I spotted 'em last time I was here, and they were heading in there."

The villager then pointed over a certain hill, and it was fairly easy to see a path running along. It was winding, but it seemed fairly easy to traverse. They could not see a structure outright, but the villager did promise them it was not that far away, and would not really be much of a delay.

"Well, that seals away my worries," Ashok said in response to the villager. "Daryl, it seems we're all for taking on the bandits. And as Lenora said, we could get some weapons and supplies off of them. I can't feel much sympathy for them, if they're truly as bad as she's described. Let's help the villagers out!"

"I'm sure we can afford to take a short detour for something as important as this." She turned to Kristoph, "And thank you for the offer. I'd love to learn from someone who has actual battlefield experience." Until then, it was just a matter of avoiding direct combat.

Daryl raised his eyebrow when Aiolos spoke. What a colourful fellow.

F6yLj1e.gif "Thank you all so much! I don't have that much to give you, but we do have some shops in our village, if you need to buy some things?"

kKCyIlc.gif "See? It all works out."

Daryl sighed and ran his hand through his hair.

XB2S15Y.gif "Fine, since it shouldn't take that long."

They lead themselves down the road that the villager pointed to, and sure enough, there was a fairly large structure that they came across. While the front doors were visible, there seemed to be no-one on watch.

~~Chapter 1: Mountain Prisoners~~

3VYbp.jpg

The group finds themselves at the mountain pass, on a messenger mission to the Eslonian army stationed west of the Gorian mountains. On the way, a villager asks them to help with the recent bandit group, lead by a man called Sayl, that has been terrorizing the native villages there.

XB2S15Y.gif "While that's great and all, we don't have anyway of getting in."

kKCyIlc.gif "I can handle that, I have a plan."

With that, Tara began walking towards the doors, and instinctively, everyone followed.

XB2S15Y.gif "A plan? First time for everything, I suppose," Daryl muttered.

Tara walked straight up to the door and knocked on the door, twice.

XB2S15Y.gif "Tara!? What the hell are you doing!?"

A few seconds later, the door opened and a broad-shouldered man stepped out. He barely had any time to open his mouth before Tara slashed him across the throat with her sword.

kKCyIlc.gif "See? Open door."

XB2S15Y.gif "...first time for everything, I suppose. But what about the rest of them?"

kKCyIlc.gif "Huh, I never thought that far."

There was a shout from inside.

"Intruders! Quick, get everyone out here!"

kKCyIlc.gif "Shit."

Meanwhile, inside the building, the leader is just finished shackling a couple prisoners that they had taken from their last raid. They had searched for anything of worth, and found little.

HH8LSiM.gif "You were a merchant," remarked the leader, "you're bound to have something hidden."

joJtlnc.gif"No sir, I have nothing. All I have are the hopes that you would loosen these ropes. Honest, I wouldn't tell a soul."

Sayl stared at the man in disbelief.

HH8LSiM.gif "Get back in there with the other one!"

Ryst is pushed into a cell with the other prisoner, Hans.

i4qeYNe.gif "Boss, we're being attacked!"

HH8LSiM.gif "What?! Tell the boys to move out, then!"

"...It's a damn good thing that bandit was a moron." Knocking. Really. Whatever, it was their stupid faults, and now they'd be paying for it.

Calden moves to (14,3) and fires a Wind spell at the nearby bandit.

Lenora moves to (14,4) and finishes off the bandit.

Ashok was ready for this, he kept telling himself, as he moved into the fortress and over the dead bandit. He still wasn't entirely used to the sight of death, but he was sure he'd get used to it eventually. As Lenora had rushed into the building, he assumed it was time to act his part and take hits for her, if he could. He pulled his javelin out, as an archer seemed to be getting himself ready. Wouldn't he be surprised when a spear came sailing back at him?

Ashok moves to (15,4), equips his iron javelin, and actives Guard on Lenora.

Kris couldn't even say anything at the fact that the group had actually gotten in through the door by knocking, well, nobody ever said bandits were intelligent.

Kris moves to 13,4

Seems like Tara was very willing and pushy about engaging the bandits, maybe she had some strong grudge against them? No matter, it was all going on their favor, so there wasn't a real reason to complain. "Huh, seems that worked out. Well, a bit of luck never hurt anybody~"

Helen didn't want to advance while the archer near the darn pillars wasn't addressed, but positioning herself for when that happened seemed sound, at least.

Helen moves to 14,2.
