  1. I'll ... give this a try, if only to give me some spriting practice. I'll only be able to do spriteworks, as I do not have the means for other art media.

    [spoiler=General ideas]

For Fire Emblem specifically, these are off the top of my head (may add more later): Mia, Laura, Aran, Vika, Darros, Lute, Morgan (F), Canas

    Other games and series:

-Persona 3, Persona 4: pretty much any of the main characters and any classmate social link characters. Specifics: Junpei, Fuuka, Shinjiro, Kanji, Naoto

-Pokémon: Generally, electric- and steel-type Pokémon. Also the female protagonists, specifically Hilda and Rosa

-Kirby: Can be anything from the games, but reinterpreted as a human character

General rule of thumb for my tastes in art: cute things, unless being cute isn't fitting for the subject

For music: fast, upbeat, 60s- and 80s-style rock and metal music, especially if it is a cover of video game music

I'll add to this if necessary, but this should be enough.

  2. So, if I am remembering correctly, there was supposedly a recent 3DS update that allowed the user to create back-up save files either onto the SD card or the system itself. Now, I have a couple questions regarding this. First off, am I even remembering correctly, or am I getting my facts all mixed up? Second, assuming that this is true, how would I go about doing this?

The reason I ask is a game I've been playing has several major choices that can't be undone and not enough save files in-game to cover all permutations.

  3. Download malwarebyte anti-malware and get that shit off your computer asap.

I already have Malwarebytes and have performed a full scan with it both times it has occurred. I have also had it remove all threats it found.

Here's a guide. I believe this is the virus? http://www.fixpcyourself.com/reveton-virus/

Thank you very much. I'll take a look at it immediately.

Another question for anyone who can answer: can this carry with it other threats like viruses and/or Trojans, or is it just malware?

  4. First off, if this isn't in the right board, the mods are welcome to move it to a different board.

So, this is something that has happened twice within a week of each attack, the second attack occurring today. Basically, what happen is my desktop is replaced with a window that states that the government has seized my computer/encrypted all of my files and that have to pay them to get it fixed.

Now, manual-restarting my computer gets rid of the window, but this is bothering me, especially when this has happened so frequently recently after not happening at all.

Should I be worried about this?

  5. >Restarts sprite topic

    >Forgets about it in a month or so

So I caught a bit of an art block after coming back from a road trip my family took, and I was wanting to break out of it.

    37i8.png

So I whipped this up to fight it. Still a WIP, though. It's part of that character challenge I imposed upon myself ... kinda. Kirby here will be used as a size reference for future sprites. But I felt like I was doing a really good job with the shading, so I decided to share it.

  6. I've been wanting to get into making and/or manipulating music for a while, just for experimental purposes, so I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations about any particular MIDI software (or any other music software) that I could look into.

I currently have a Windows 7 laptop, so that will affect what software I can use, I'm sure.

  7. Pretty much, if the song sounds remotely like Rock-n-Roll or Metal and comes from anytime between the 60s and the 80s, then I'll probably enjoy it. Some modern songs from those styles, as well.

I also enjoy most styles of music from video games. A lot.

  8. Between the two, it depends on the material the container is in. If I'm buying soda in a plastic bottle, then Pepsi over Coke. If we're talking cans of glass bottles, then Coke over Pepsi.

To be fair, though, the two are so similar that it doesn't really matter in most cases.

That being said, if we're talking any soda, then Code Red or Barq's Root Beer tend to be my preference over those two. Coke feels like instant teeth rot and Pepsi leaves a weird feeling at the back of my throat.

  9. O hey, more Link stuff:

    rdf5.png

Tried a minor shading change on Link's torso (seen on the right), plus an attempt at the iron shield. There are two variations of the shield: the one on the left is more saturated (better reflecting official art); the one on the right is less saturated (which blends the colors better, IMO).

EDIT: Tried changing up the perspective on the shields. Does it look better, or not?

  10. The first one that came to my head is Gotcha Force.

You wouldn't believe how many hours I sunk into that game. The only reason I'm not now is because my Gamecube memory card keeps corrupting.

Pretty much, you assemble a team of units to battle in missions, beat-em-up style. The plot is a bit bare-bones, but the gameplay is addicting. The soundtrack is also pretty good, from what I can remember.

  11. Depends on what you're wanting to do. For just messaging, email, etc, Android phones have a feature that lets you make a portable hot spot using the phone's cellular connection. Hope you've got unlimited data though, because that will eat your data plan up pretty fast depending how much time you spend on it. It's also contingent on the area having good cellular infrastructure to connect through.

Also, when I was living in Jordan, I got a Wifi dongle that let me connect through Orange. Don't know if you or your parents (whoever pays your phone bill) would be willing to add a data plan for a dongle for just a week, but you might be able to get a "pay as you go" plan that won't go on your phone bill. Be warned though, the signal strength and ^/v load speeds won't be as good as actual Wifi. Using too much data will also make the dongle heat up pretty bad, which can mess it up.

Can't guarantee either of these will work if you want to do online gaming, torrents, etc, but they will do the "every day" internet stuff just fine. My Orange Wifi handled You Tube pretty well too, but video streaming will eat your data pretty fast too.

Yeah, I just would like to have the Internet connection for visiting the websites I normally attend. I probably should have specified that.

I don't have an Android phone, so option #1 won't work. I can try pitching option #2 to my parents, but I don't think it'll work out. Thank you for the suggestions, though.

If your grandfather doesn't have internet then you're pretty boned unless you head to somewhere nearby that has Wi-Fi. McDonald's tends to have free Wi-Fi, maybe there's one nearby?

I figured this was going to be the most likely case. If worse comes to worse, I'll just deal with it and find something else to occupy my time.

  12. If this is in the wrong board, then mods are free to move it.

So, in about a week, my family is going on a trip to Maryland to visit my mom's family. We'll be staying at my mom's dad's house for about two weeks.

The reason I'm posting is because my grandfather, as far as I know, doesn't have Internet access at his house. Now, two weeks isn't that long of a timeframe to go without Internet, but I would like to have access to the Internet in case I get bored on a day where we're doing nothing. So, I would like to get some kind of device that would allow me Internet access to my laptop despite my grandfather's place not having one, if that is even possible. If also possible, I'd rather it be not too expensive.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  13. 7bg.png

Something different. I was originally trying to make an updated counterpart to the style used in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, but ended up just making it a custom style. Main sprite to focus on is the one on the left. I also would like comments on the current palette.

  14. Something new:

    6okz.png

An original enemy that I had thought up a few years back, sprited in Kirby Advance style. The yellow one is Greep, and the gray one is Noct. How the duo would work is that Greep would be located in an inaccessible alcove, where he would swing Noct with a rope that is tied around the latter. The two could be defeated by either attacking Noct directly (must be an attack; the rope prevents Noct from being inhaled) or severing the rope.

Anyway, Kirby and Cupie are there for reference.

  15. Those are some snazzy sprites. I like the different styles and of them Mario and Link (ML3 style) are probably my favorites.

The trend I'm noticing with your maps is that they feel very cramped (but well made).

Thank you! Though I have dabbled in a lot of sprite styles, I still struggle a bit in trying to adhere to the style, so to hear that they fit is encouraging.

Well, at least they're well made! ^_^' I will keep that in mind when working on future maps.

i like your maps but they seem all over the place and not very structured. witch is a good thing a guess if you want it to be like that.

To be fair, when I map, I don't really consider then in a gaming sense, just creatively. Duly noted for the future, though.

That's some pretty cool stuff! Really digging the variance and everything overall on the sprite side, although the scribbles/boredom pieces don't seem as clean as the Nintendo pieces (that's probably obvious to you).

Looking forward to seeing more of your 100-character challenge whether or not you get to 100.

With the boredom pieces, that's part of the risk in creating your own style, though I'll keep that in mind if I decide to make more of them.

Wish me luck. I think the biggest hurdle is going to be making sure the sizes of the characters are correct.

I like those maps, but they look like they'd be a pain to play on.

Like I said to ShinyPichu, I mostly map from a creative stance rather than gameplay stance. I will keep that in mind as well.

  16. FOR THOSE OF YOU STOPPING BY FROM THE FUTURE TO TAKE A GANDER:

Some of the images in the first few pages, back when I still used Imageshack for uploading, are now broken.

    HOWEVER, FRET NOT!

If you wish to view them, right-click on the image, click "Inspect Element", then right-click on the image link that pops up on the right and click "Open in New Tab." As far as I have tested, this allows you to view the image.

If it doesn't work, then you're outta luck, I suppose. *Shrug*

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seeing as how my old sprite topic is deader than a doornail, I feel like starting over, so to speak, with a clean slate.

This time around, though, I'll be posting less exclusively FE sprites and more other styles of sprites.

Anyway, sprites, in no particular order:

    nzb.png

Part of a series of sprites in a custom style where I sprite 100 of my favorite characters from my favorites games and franchises, with the stipulation of one character per game. Let's see if I can actually do it.

    9j1.pngk9oj.pngz93.png

A few FE-battle-styled sprites that I've made some time in the past year or so.

    dzxu.png

A few Nintendo characters in ML3 style.

    1vo.pngiuo.png

The result of boredom and random scribbles in Paint.

    ylxc.png

Another boredom piece from a while back. Also an experiment with limited colors on the mushroom; the grassy knoll came later.

    c3c.png

A custom style inspired by 8-bit graphics, though itself isn't.

    And a few maps:

    2vzb.png

    6s5.png

    u7kr.png

    z5py.png

    k4jb.png

That should be enough for now. Comments and criticisms are always welcome.

  17. My first attempts at spriting were back in 2005, back when I attended the old Nsider messageboards. Granted, back then I was downright horrible when it came to sprites, if they could even be called that. A few years later, and after forum-hopping for a while, I ended up at Pixeltendo, which is (or was at the time) The Spriter's Resourse's messageboard. There, I learned a lot of techniques that the better spriters used and started to get better, though I still was pretty bad. After that, I just sorta developed more as I hopped from forum to forum.

I think my first forays into FE styles was back in either 2008 or 2009, whenever I joined FEPlanet.

Like a lot of people here, though, I don't sprite as often as I used to. A lack of inspiration, a lack of motivation, and a lot of self-deprecation seems to have stymied it, though I jump into paint every now and then.

  18. I've found that the time-travel shenanigans in this game are a lot like the ending of Ocarina of Time and its effect on the Zelda timeline.

In Ocarina of Time, Link ends up sealing away Ganondorf at the end of the game; he then is sent back in time by Zelda. After traveling back to before he and Zelda meet, he uses his knowledge of what will happen to help Zelda expose Ganondorf's façade, setting up the backstory for Twilight Princess. This creates a branch in time at the point where the past events were changed, as opposed to the new events overriding the original.

In this game, the children go back in time to try and change the screwed future that they were a part of. They still retain their memories of this future, however, which is how they're able to identify what needs to be changed to prevent their future from playing back out again. In doing so, they create a branch in time at the point where the past was changed, which, like above, don't override the events that transpired in the original flow of time.

    tl;dr, see below:

    ,-----------------------------------------------------------------(They go back in time...)----------------------------------------------------------------------,

    v |

----(Point where past was or wasn't altered)-------------- Original future where Gimle took over. The children (save for Morgan) still remember this. -'

    \

    \

\------------ Second future where Chrom doesn't die, Gimle is defeated.

    (Sorry for huge post.)
