  1. Aight, here I go again with my opinions. Web-Spinner Charlotte Get it? Because there's a book about a spider named Charlotte? She seems to be fairly gimmicky, with the whole "two faces" thing going for her. But her supports with Xander and some others make me like her. And she has a genuine reason for her facade, not just because she's a gold-digger who only cares about getting rich. And it doesn't seem like her particular gimmick is played for laughs, which is good, because the gimmicks these characters have are almost never funny. Odin "Coldsteel" Deathman Dark Okay, so that isn't his name. But it very well could be. I actually liked him, ever since I heard him yell "Radiant Dawn", and then immediately complain "Dammit hand, this is no time for games!" (this was in Awakening). Yes, he's probably the most gimmicky of the Awakening trio; and yes, he's fairly one-dimensional. He probably hasn't matured as much as Laslow or Selena have, but at the very least he isn't arguing with Laslow. His gimmick just doesn't ever get old for me; if there's any good example of a "joke" character, Odin is it. He still has serious moments; even his whole gimmick has a purpose to it (one that's actually kind of heart-wrenching, at that). And somehow, his gimmick doesn't make the serious moments jarring. I can perfectly understand why he was voted as one of the most popular Awakening kids. He's really charming, and is still one of my favorites. Zola I'm not mad because he imprisoned all of Team Takumi in Revelation. Some people seem to like him, but I forget about him pretty quickly. If there was someway to put more focus on him, he could probably be a very interesting villain. He's not quite like the dumb chums Hans and Iago, and he isn't a villain just to be evil. All he wants is to put a quick end to the war, but in every instance that he tries this, he gets murdered. I think in the real world, I would have a level of respect for his idealism and tactics, even if it meant that the enemy leaders would just all die like dogs in a pen. But lo and behold, even his own allies look down on this because it isn't "honorable". Typical...
  2. Orochi Opinions are somewhat limited on her. I've had her support a number of characters, and she has some pretty good supports. I like how her supports break Laslow from his gimmick entirely, yet I'm still trying to gather what I feel about her. The reason this is is because she seems to take on supports with different people in different ways. For example, in her C-Support with Saizo, she confronts him with a load of gossipy nonsense, but then she'll be totally friendly with Corrin or Laslow. Maybe it's because she's into fortune telling, so she knows if she'll get along with someone or not. Perhaps unlocking more supports or reading more opinions will allow me to form a proper opinion of her. Mitama I find it funny just how many people say they can relate to lil' ol' haiku lady. I think we all have those days where we just want to lay in our beds and attend to creative endeavors. Though I haven't used her too much, I find her to be kind of entertaining. I sense that there might be some character growth with her, but I don't think I've ever reached the end of a support line with her at all. I'll tell you what, though, I do like her more than her father, and I've actually reached the end of some of Azama's support lines (obviously, otherwise I wouldn't even know who Mitama is).
  3. Was he a nihilist who did terrible things because feelings don't matter? Or was he just "morally ambiguous", following questionable orders just to get what he wants? For what it's worth, at least you aren't comparing that OC to Gheb. I'm constantly reminded of my lax attitude towards Fates through the crazy time chambers that are all the astral and deep realms, the supremely gimmicky characters, and the unfunny, stupid joke supports that litter this game. Oh, and the fact that the "super elite" army of the game features teens, kids, and people who look like kids, all of whom can apparently kick more ass than the veterans in their prime if they're trained right. Then there's the clear incongruence between gameplay and story, where sometimes your characters have difficulty fighting an enemy even though in actual gameplay, the enemy's extremely weak compared to the characters they were fighting. But I guess Hans is pretty ridiculous, too. But to be fair, he does proclaim that if he kills Corrin, he "might" be made a duke, so I guess his end goal is power and not just being a total douche... not that it makes him any more interesting.
  4. Yay, I'm here early for once! I'm gonna celebrate by producing some memes opinions. Hinata Alright, so now we're two-thirds of the way done with Team Takumi. Hinata's a very standard dude that loves to train and compete against others, but sometimes a simple thing can be good. He makes clear that he works hard for Takumi, and I like the backstory of why it is he felt the need to in the first place, as it ties in well with his personality. IMO, he's an example of the "loyal, competitive warrior" archetype done right. And I also like that in his supports with Oboro, the end wasn't about one of the characters winning the sparring session they had; it was merely about how they liked coming together for a common cause. Though perhaps the Takumi worship wankfest goes a little far... which is even lampshaded. Silas I actually really liked this guy, initially. He seems like such a bro. But I don't really understand why it is people really like Corrin other than for story/writing purposes. Sure, they're all friendly and whatnot, but there are people out there who hate/are suspicious of super nice guys/gals and see it as either pathological kindness or as pure naivety. Anyway, there isn't any real reason Silas should've devoted 5-10 years of his life getting close to Corrin; people change when they grow up, and they usually move on from old relationships. Goddammit, I can't stop talking about Corrin with this guy. That's exactly his problem, though; his Corrin worship. It's probably the worst of all the worships in this game aside from Rhajat's. But he's alright in the supports where he isn't talking about Corrin; I mean, kinda bland and standard, but at least he isn't talking about his huge Corrin crush. Hans Psycho killer... qu'est ce que c'est? He's a big, power hungry jerk. Basically, like the power hungry psycho king in a number of Fire Emblem games without the royal status. Because of that and because there's absolutely no build up or development with this guy, he's pretty generic. Iago is more interesting than this chum, which says a lot because Iago isn't an interesting villain, either. Hans is just a villain for you to hate, but they don't put much effort into making you hate him; he goes and mindlessly attacks some generic Hoshidan troops, he kills a certain character in one route (which feels cheap and stupid if you buffed your characters out ridiculously), and he's constantly working against you. I hate him for how boring he is, not because he's a dick. Remember when the Radiance series gave you actually interesting villains? Hell, some of them even joined your side. I want that kind of stuff to return.
  5. Bang, boom, more opinions for you... uh, I can't think of a rhyme for "boom" that'll work here. Leonardo DiCaprio He's my favorite Titanic victim Nohrian noble. Something about both the teen brothers is just so appealing to me. I think it's the fact that since they're young (unlike Xander/Ryoma) but not too young (like Sakura/Elise are), they have room to grow in lots of different ways. Both Tako and Da Vinci have real flaws that often recur. Their characteristics aren't played for laughs; they aren't silly, made up ones like them being "too good" (in a moral sense, that is); they're real personal boons and banes for them that affect them in numerous ways. In Leo's case, he feels forgotten because of his independence (as opposed to Takumi feeling forgotten because he feels useless), but at the same time, he often feels overshadowed by his own brother, which is why he worked so hard to be independent. It makes me think of the Ouroboro symbol; he feeds into his own suffering, much like how the Ouroboro serpent eats at its own tail. I haven't yet found a moment that I disliked with this guy. And his flaws don't make me detest or laugh at him. And it made me happy that in the end of BR, his heart indeed still went on... okay, I'll stop. Hayato He seems an alright chum. I never really hated Ricken, and Hayato's like a more dialed down version of him. I only hate the archetype when it gets overly whiny and bratty, which doesn't really happen with either of these characters. I actually do believe that Hayato has some degree of maturity to him, even though he has certain eating habits and is constantly concerned about his child-like stature. Oh, and he's afraid of the dark, too. The reason I think he's mature is because he genuinely takes others into consideration; he makes charms for the Wind Tribe, he seems to frequently offer to help those who seem to need assistance, and he tries really hard to learn to write a good letter for the Wind Tribe, even though he's supposedly terrible at writing letters. He gives off a bad first impression because IS really wants to make sure you know for certain what a character's gimmick is before you start actually using them. But as a completionist, I did put through the effort to get him to support characters, and the gimmick... well, it is a part of his character, but it's usually overshadowed in the supports. In fact, in his support with Corrin, it's never even mentioned (at least from what I recall). And I think there are a number of other Hayato supports like that, as well. Usually if it is mentioned, it's because the other character is intentionally insulting him.
  6. Water under a bridge, I say. Unless you geared your Corrin towards using dragonstones (and I mean to the point where other fighting styles are useless for them), you won't need a Dragonstone+. The shops at max level sell regular transformation stones, and those super rare weapons (+ stones, S-rank weapons, etc.) are only ever found in one place through the whole game. You can't get them with DLC, paralogues, or later in the game.
  7. I dunno, you got any other uses for FE amiibo? If not, then I'm not sure you'll get your money's worth even if you wanted to use the amiibo units.
  8. Alright, I missed the one from yesterday, and since Jakob's on the menu, I'll talk about him first to tie in what I've said about him when talking about Felicia. Little Jacob As I've said before, just because I said I preferred Felicia doesn't mean I dislike Jakob. The real problem I ever have with him is that he seems to be a jerk to just about everyone who isn't royalty. That's fine; Niles has a similar thing going for him, and I praised the hell out of him. But the thing I don't particularly like is that Jakob just does it unprovoked, as if to keep himself aloof. Sometimes, however, he actively tries to irritate and harass some characters (like Rinkah). Just... why do that? Aside from that, I do like Jakob quite a bit. He's often a lecturer, except when he's approached by someone older than himself (Gunter). He tries to teach Corrin and Felicia, and has an ongoing tea-making competition with his son that's quite charming. He does talk of his past, particularly with Azura (their supports which I like), and it explains really well why it is he is so devoted to Corrin; it's definitely more than one can say about Felicia and Flora's strange devotion to Corrin. I would wager a guess that the fact that his parents abandoned him is why he tries to keep himself aloof of most others. Now that we got to talking about Little Jakob, it reminded me that I haven't yet married Jakob in one of my files that I'm currently doing a casual run on, and I'd really like to get Dwyer. I'll get on that... Kagero I'd say the reason she's so bad at art is because she's a rather plain character. No really; most great artists had at least one interesting trait (usually a mental illness), but all there really is to Kagero aside from her interest in art is her devotion to Hoshido and its future king as well as her former relationship with Saizo. But her being uninteresting doesn't really make her a poorly written character... wait, actually it kind of does. I don't really have much else to say about her other than I'm not sure why IS was so fixated on making her the go-to damsel in distress for the Mokushujin part of every route. If you're banking on tits to sell the dame, you're better off with Charlotte or Cowmilla. Kana They really are just a watered down Morgan, tbh. Kana's only two traits are loving "Papa/Mama" and wanting to do fun stuff with other people. But then again, since Kana jeers at Shigure for being "a teenager" and has a generally youthful physique, I'd assume that they're literally a child, and thus the desire to play at least is justified. Except children are more complex than that, and many at the very least express disdain for their parents. It's just obvious that Kana exists mostly to appease the player and make them gush at their own virtual creation. And when I think of that, it just irks me; there's just something about the idea of neglecting my real life pets for some fictional pet/kid that feels so very wrong. Often when I come upon a pet or child character in a video game, that's where my mind goes to, so I usually don't like it. Effie Alright, so here's the thing; I often hear about how people prefer the Hoshidan retainers to the Nohrian ones, and I think it's because many Nohrian retainers are really gimmicky. Effie is one such gimmick character; her thing is being a ridiculously strong meathead who has to eat a lot and loves training (Not!GokuTM). This is a gimmick we see in a ton of different media, and often for female characters it'll comes packed with a shit ton of aggression, sometimes even misandry. But Effie doesn't really have that; the reason she's a meathead is solely because of Elise. The problem I have with gimmick characters is that while they can be fun and entertaining, they're usually unrealistic and hardly relatable. They also typically stay astray of any real emotion, so all you have is the joke. Effie is just ridiculously buff and adores Elise, and while some of her supports with other characters helps build those characters up, they don't really build herself up in any substantial way. And as some have pointed out, her joke doesn't really tie in with her supports in a meaningful manner; it just shows up and that's it. I can at least appreciate this of her, though. Of all the gimmick characters, Effie's probably the most likeable, though.
  9. lol, why not go for front page on Serenes Forest? Go for broke or go home. Anyway, time for some hot, spicy opinions. The Nile I totally dig him. He's one of my favorite characters in the game, if only because he almost never fails to make me laugh. But he's also got a backstory that explains why he might be the way he is, and his overly flirtatious attitude is because of his view of people in general. He only does it to people he thinks "deserve it", which sometimes only the slightest mishaps would fulfill that condition. He has some genuine supports with certain characters, as well. And if I hear things correctly, he was written really well in the original version of the game. I don't often like characters or games with edge, but his is done just right, I feel. He isn't like Shadow the Hedgehog where it just seems like he tries too hard to be a "morally ambiguous" asshole; he just innately is a morally ambiguous character by the very nature of his past (and present), and he puts off his flirty, uncaring asshole caricature effortlessly. Felicia (AKA Mizz "We've Got Trouble") Some say Jakob's the better of Corrin's retainers, but I disagree (I'll get into that when I talk about Little Jakob, though do know that I definitely don't hate him). Sure, a number of Felicia's supports revolve around her breaking stuff and fumbling as a maid, but there's a charm to her trying to appease everyone around her, and not just Corrin. I still find it kind of odd that she's so nice and happy given that she pretty much was forced to serve Corrin because she was a political prisoner. But you know what, Corrin and the Nohrian royals are pretty damn kind people, so I guess it's easy to get Stockholmed working for them. She's kind of like a more attentive Setsuna, seasoned with unconditional kindness and apparently overly saturated with hints at her combat prowess. I dig her confidence in combat, as well.
  10. I actually do, too. Personally, I think ol' Ryomer's a less interesting Xander, which really is because a sizable portion of his supports are obvious info-dumps. Incidentally, I think his supports with Xander as well as with his son are the best ones. And his supports with the brunette girls he's able to support are nice, too.
  11. Alright, good... we get another royal and a retainer. Subaki I'll just say it right off the bat; I think that Subaki gets too much hate. He has some really good supports, and they aren't just good for the character he talks with. He isn't "perfect" so much as he is a perfectionist who doesn't want anyone to see him falter. One sign, for me, that he isn't a terribly written character is that all the S supports I've seen haven't ended with the other character gushing about how he's perfect and all that. In fact, most of the time, the A/S supports revolve around the fact that he's imperfect. It isn't the best writing out there, but goddammit, it's not the worst, considering some of the garbage that's out there. Hinoka She gets the shaft end both by the fans and by the main story writers. She only really has a major role in CQ, but most of the time, her involvement revolves around Corrin trying to keep up the facade that he/she and all the other royals are with Garon 100%. And after the fact, she becomes queen of Hoshido, and that's about all we heard. I ran into a semi-canon "conversation video" of a hypothetical situation where Oboro was kept alive and tried to kill Corrin for killing Takumi; in it, Hinoka was trying to reason with Oboro, but even in this fan-made video, Hinoka loses the spotlight, as she was relegated to simply questioning Oboro while she made threats and coy remarks. On a side note, that video actually left a scar in my soul I feel the main problems are that she has little story significance and her personality revolves around her being the "older sister" figure who cares deeply for her relatives and is a little hot-headed. I actually like her well enough. Whereas Ryoma has mostly text-dump supports (I'll get more into that later), Hinoka has notably less of those and is, to me, more relatable, since she isn't a figure that all the other relatives look up to. I think the fact that she's more average is a nice thing to have, but as has been proven, she is overshadowed by her other relatives because of it. And given that I really like two out the three other relatives, I think it's justified enough. I got fairly close to talking about Hinoka's retainers. But I gotta keep that little nugget locked tightly up until the time comes. I definitely have things to say about them, though.
  12. Oh woe to Fuga, as his tale is the same as every other Corrinsexual, except he actually has story prominence of some sort in all routes. He's a grizzled warrior through and through, and uses what he has learned to protect his tribe. Would be a better character if not for lacking supports. I honestly don't have much else to say. And I know there's another Corrinsexual to come, and I'll have the same amount of things to say. I don't particularly like this trend of having characters with either no supports or, like, one or two, especially when there are characters they can talk to. It just makes them feel like they're throw away characters, which is especially bad given that many of the Corrinsexuals are written so well. I could go on about Corrinsexuals and how they could do with more supports, but it's been rehashed constantly, and this thread is supposed to be about the characters themselves, not an archetype or trope for characters.
  13. You are by far one of the most decent "bad fans" I've met, to be quite frank; at least, you direct your complaints towards the game and not to the people you have disagreements with, it seems. Most of the bad fans I refer to are the kinds who, when you make a remark that is in any way disagreeable, they turn to insulting you and telling you to kill yourself or some other unnecessarily atrocious comment. And there are bad veterans, but usually their problem is several flavors and shades of elitism, which I have grown accustomed to (although it's still really stupid). Sometimes they'll devolve into insults and suicide demands, but a lot of FE fans, I find, aren't like that; they only think they're more intelligent than the "scrubs" who like/started with Awakening and Fates. All you have is an opinion about a medium that you're vocal about, which is something a lot of people have. If people hate you for not liking the stuff they like, then it's too bad they can't learn to have disagreements or accept that people have different tastes.
  14. Isn't that what the little star/round bullet beside the topic is for? As long as you and others keep posting in the topic, people should always know that there are new posts. And if you're concerned about people not knowing when you update the thread, can't you just change the topic title? I'm sure regular participators will know when there's something new, and that's all that should really matter... Someone a while back made a daily poll about favorite character critical quotes, and it was always just one topic, and it always had people posting in it, up to the very end. They would edit the OP to reflect the day's options and other important points.
  15. That's a fair point. Though isn't it the royal children who decide which people will be their retainers? And I'd assume that Garon conscripts just about any chum willing to fight, given that he forces tribes and towns that are unwilling to fight to do his bidding. Though I'm not sure that's much better... But maybe, at some point, the Awakening characters got to display their skills to the royals of Nohr, and were brought on because of that. But something like that really shouldn't be omitted. I'd say for the whole "big bad" thing, maybe it's a similar situation to one Azura's in. They know about what's going on, but are powerless to do anything because they can't actually talk about Valla. But then again, it didn't seem like they put forth much effort into getting the two nations to unite, so maybe it's more that Hidden Truths was just a last minute attempt to explain why they're even there. A real shocker, I know. I only really liked the idea that they actually were given a reason to go to this other world, not the actual execution. I'm not all that big of a fan of multiverse nonsense when it's done poorly, and I already knew as soon as I saw a few supports and whatnot that it was supposed to be exactly that. It really truly is lazy writing, at least until you actually start involving the concept of the multiverse as a primary part of the story (even then, it could still be poorly executed, and is often considered murky territory). I just am a high-end optimist as far as the media I consume is concerned, and that's just a thing particular to me; people have every right to dislike or hate something I like because everyone has a different way of looking at things. I do think it'd be nice if IS could expand the FE fanbase further by improving their writing quality, rather than diminishing it. I've had some truly awful experiences with some of the newbie fans (funny enough, none of them have been on this site), and I speak as someone who was introduced to the series with Awakening. All lower quality writing would do is bring in worse fans and drive away the more well-adjusted fans.
  16. Maybe we could get a "FE Generations" spin-off; that could satisfy our palettes without upsetting anyone. I think I need to use Rhajat more, as all I really know about her is her supports with Corn-bread and some off C supports here and there. Aside from the whole obsession with Corrin (which, I'll admit, is explained a lot better than Tharja's obsession with Robin), I hear she's a pretty neat character. But I tend to grind at a really slow pace (mainly because I find other things to do or watch a video/stream at the same time), so it'll be a bit before I investigate her other supports.
  17. Goddammit, Marth, this isn't the game for you to steal the final kill; that's for SD and MotE, where it actually makes canological sense. I wouldn't know which amiibo is best because I have none of them. So I can only judge based on their classes. And I say that it's hard to decide; probably Lucy for the nice set of skills and the ability to use both blades and lances, with Robin as a good second due to his awesome rally-bot skill. Or Ike, I suppose, due to him carrying a unique utility that most others in Fates don't have. We have super speedy units (just about everyone in Birthright), well-balanced units (Oboro, Xander, etc.), and strength-and-magic utility units (Odin, Leo, etc.), but we hardly have any super strength/defense/HP units (goddammit, Azura, we just needed the other two from you!) with taker/healing/defense-halving skills. So kudos to Dwight Eisenhower for bringing a bomber to the team. Again, it's hard for me to decide. I just listed three as my top picks, and I'm sure Marth's good, too.
  18. I'm kind of split on this, to be quite frank. On the one hand, I know it's kind of shoddy writing. They definitely did it because they wanted Awakening to help make Fates more appealing for those who entered with that one, while some of the Amiibos were integrated (not storywise, if I'm not mistaken) to appeal to older fans (and cram the other top pick of the Awakening children into the game). "Parallel universes" and all that sort of stuff is kind of a lazy way of writing; it's like saying "anything can happen, so this character is actually still alive since we know practically every fan loved them, so we felt forced into re-integrating them into the story". But this is how I feel about it in theory. In practice, I actually liked how the Awakening characters were integrated (at least Owain, Severa, and Inigo; the other three were just blatant references). And I like the idea that the worlds might be tied because of the multiple Fire Emblems. The Awakening characters were given a legitimate reason to be there, and they were written with character growth in mind. You see that where Owain and Inigo once argued, now they have civil discussions and friendly games with one another. None of them are quite so puffed up about feeling inadequate, coming to terms with the idea that there are more important things than being the best at what they do. And part of me would like to see that in characters like Shiro or Oboro, where the former lets go of his competitiveness and the latter surrenders her racism, and we get to see how that plays out for them. I think as far as the story goes as a whole, it's one of the least damaging things, considering we've got the whole "everyone's related" thing as well as the whole "everyone's fighting because of some dragon in an invisible land you can't talk about" deal. Or, you know, the whole "destroying an entire nation and killing innocent people to save said nation" thing I'm sorry, I couldn't go without trash talking CQ. But if they take it up a notch or two, it has the potential of ruining the story. It's better off staying as a mere cameo that's somewhat integrated into the story than becoming a more vital part of it. Last thing we need is all the lords and princesses of all the Fire Emblem games coming together in the next game to create the "Super Mega Fire Emblem" to defeat the "Mega Death Dragon Omnigod", complete with fusion dances and a Super Saiyan Ultra God Super Saiyan 137.
  19. For me, she comes across as more endearing than Selkie. Maybe it's because I'm a dog person, and she's pretty much everything a dog/wolf would be if they were a person. Her love of trash hunting makes me think of my dogs, at least. She even has a great adoration for her parents, much like how a dog has great adoration for their master, assuming that said master is actually good and doesn't neglect/abuse the dog. I'll get around to learning more about her. As I haven't used her too terribly much, I don't know a lot about her. But even if these character traits and her aloofness are all there is to her, I'd still like her well enough.
  20. Saizo... Hmm. I'd say that I like some of his supports. For example, I liked his and Mozu's because they actually hit it off really well, and it isn't just a set of wacky ventures between two highly incompatible people that somehow results in them liking (and possibly falling in love with) one another. There isn't anything too profound with it; just two people talking about their homes, cooking, and genuinely enjoying one another's company. He works well with people he likes/appreciates, but I guess it's understandable when he doesn't like someone, particularly when Orochi just comes up to him and starts bad-mouthing him for no reason. He does have a soft spot though, so he isn't just a gimmick character, and I can appreciate that. His backstory is kind of cool, too. Nothing too new about the whole "Fifth Saizo" thing; there's plenty of that in other written works. And his behavior towards it is also pretty standard. But I liked his dealings with the Mokushujin clan of ninjas and the story about his cut eye; it's nice to know it isn't just there for cosmetic purposes. What would've been kind of interesting as well is if he could support Midori, given that she's his niece and all.
  21. Why must you torment me so? Nah, kidding. Go about your life and all that stuff.
  22. I know some other people responded to me, but to be honest, I only have energy to respond to one comment for now. Price: It's about $40 across the board of online sellers. Used copies might vary, but I saw an Amazon copy that was five dollars off, so I'm not sure. I don't know how much it originally costed because my copy was a gift, so you'll have to decide for yourself if this price drop is enough for you, if there even was a price drop. There's also the DLC, which, when combined, costs around $50 total. However, the game isn't split up like Fates is, but has, I think, the same amount of chapters as one of the branches. Soundtrack: Yes, it's absolutely good, and helps set the mood for a lot of scenes. The dual battle music system works like it does in Fates, except for in the DLC maps. Story: Don't let people tell you it's terrible; temper your expectations until you've played it yourself. It's definitely not as good of a story as Radiance, but it's not on the level of stupid that CQ/Revelation are. And you have a proper lord who isn't a self-insert Mary Sue, along with a decent cast of characters. My favorites are Chrom, Lucina, Owain, Virion, and Henry, among some others. Some of the DLC adds to the story; specifically, the Scramble packs (okay, they more just have what are essentially support convos, but still) and the Future Past pack. Final note: With all the changes brought about with Fates as far as the mechanics go, Awakening's gonna feel somewhat dated in comparison. A number of mechanics make Awakening feel totally broken compared to Fates. That being said, if you don't grind to the end of Earth (which is very easy to do if you use spotpass or DLC), then you might still find an adequate challenge in Awakening. Again, you should play it yourself; you are the only one who can decide if you like it or not.
  23. I'm just gonna respond to a bunch of posts here, just 'cuz I feel like it... I don't know what to say aside from yes, he deserved better than he got. And his retainers deserved better. But we can spend a millennium talking about things Conquest did wrong... Daw, those fan-made supports are adorable. And they're pretty well written, too. I always thought that Oboro and Selena would've hit it off really well. @2: Rally bot, rally bot, woo! Woo! Woo! @4: I thought her sacrifice was pointless and dumb. She had no reason to kill herself, especially since, in Revelation, Camilla joins your side even though she was ordered to kill you, and even Flora herself joins you even though not following Garon's orders still put the Ice Tribe at jeopardy. She has even less of a reason in BR, since by the point of her sacrifice, a good portion of Nohr had been ravaged/liberated. And as someone who appreciates her, I don't really hate Felicia nor do I feel the need to bash her, but I can get into further details about her when the time comes. @9: Design-wise, and I know this is more a matter of taste, but I liked the female hairstyles a lot more than the male ones. I can overlook the fanservice nonsense if it doesn't overshadow the other design choices and, in my opinion, the other appeals far outshine the thigh holes. Because King Garon's a d***? The narrative very heavily pushes the idea that Nohr is horribly corrupt, and that Garon oppresses his subjects, so I think you're to assume that Cheve is rebelling against oppression. @5: "A logical pairing, indeed." I just had to involve Laurent in all this. @6: You really oughta play Awakening. You will come to respect Laslow's supports so much more knowing his past, and you might actually end up liking Selena, too. Mechanics-wise, it doesn't necessarily hold a candle to Fates, but it can still be fun. Also, the characters don't have feet; they only have pegs. Plus, if you play Awakening, you'll actually get my joke about your comment on Scarlet. That's how it feels for me, too.
  24. I actually liked that one, too. I think I spent more time in the preparation screen in Conquest than the prep screen for any other branch partially due to the track.
  25. So, I get to critique characters, huh? Good... good... #1: Laslow/Inigo What you say about him in Awakening is pretty much what you'd say about him in Fates. I won't go and judge a character solely for being a popular insert, especially in this case because they actually attempted to integrate the Awakening characters into the story (though that was DLC). But I guess he's more... mature in this game. He has a rather well thought out way of looking at his encounters with others that ties into his past of coming from a blighted future. In his supports with Corrin, if you've played Awakening, you can feel the weight of his words, particularly in the B support. I give them props for tying Inigo into this game in a way that makes sense and has some emotional weight. #2: Shigure Unfortunately, I haven't spent much time with Shigure. From what I've seen from him, he's very much like his mother, and obviously loves to sing. He has a high place in the character polls I've seen, and I think it's deserved, probably. And in this case, as well as all other cases, I won't judge him and other characters based on his S supports with other characters unless those are really good or abominations. He was pretty neat in Heirs of Fates. #3: Selkie So here's one furry appeal archetype. Just kidding; I don't particularly mind Selkie. The only sense that she's a furry is in her transformation and her tail, and a character being a furry isn't a reason to judge a character. That being said, she does take on a common furry archetype, which is the playful fox type character. However, the judgement should be placed upon the way the trope is executed, not the fact that it exists in the game. So... I don't particularly think she's that great of a character, but she isn't a horrible or cringeworthy character either. #4: Flora Well, here's Corrinsexual number 1. I'm with the general consensus in that I think she would've done great with more supports. Though her entire being (and her jokes and one-liners) is of coldness, it isn't all that overwhelming. You don't have entire support lines revolving around a character's annoying tropes or flanderized personality traits with her; just genuine conversations about each others' relationships and pasts. That, and she has a level of story presence that's nice. #5: Scarlet It's a shame she's such a throw away character as far as story and support options go, because she's one of the better Fates characters. Sure, she's got a bit of a tinge of tsundere, but her characterization isn't devoted to tropes. I like how her decorating weapons and armor ties into her hometown, and she's a passionate fighter. With just about every other Corrinsexual, her downfall is a lack of supports. #6: Selena/Severa The real tsundere. She is the embodiment of tsundere; she's brash, gets timid when treated kindly or engaged in a flirtatiously in any way, and is very competitive. But again, I prefer to judge based on how her trope is used, not the fact that she's based on it. I don't think she was as well done as Laslow, and her supports with the other Awakening characters are my least favorite ones out of the three, but she has her moments. I particularly appreciated how she gets over her obsession with being "perfect" like her mother in her supports with Subaki and Caeldori, as it shows genuine character growth. #7: Nyx It seems that every C-support with her has the other character assuming that she's a child, even though she has stated countless times that she isn't. She returns this with scoffs and requests for the other character to leave her be, which, if I were to be honest, would probably be what I'd do in the same situation. Though she often gives a cold shoulder to a lot of characters, she also has a soft side. All around, I think she's an alright character. Not overly reliant on a trope, yet not too terribly bland, either. #8: Takumi It's the meme man. It's probably only because of America's current election harboring a man with... certain qualities that Takumi shares. That being said, I like that he's portrayed as a "darker sun" of Hoshido, expressing racism, an inferiority complex, and just battling negative feelings in general. The flaws most other Hoshidan characters seem to have are either silly quirks or that they are "too peaceful" and "good"; I refuse to believe that any one nation, no matter their policy, is comprised entirely of peace-loving do-gooders. Takumi is actually a fairly realistic character, along with one of his retainers. His feelings towards Nohr are justified, since they killed his parents, presumably killed the parents of one of his retainers, and have been rousing constant conflicts with Hoshido via the use of monsters and other Vallite resources. #9: Corrin God, it's the Mary Sue. I seem to like the female Corrin supports more than the male Corrin supports. Unless you're a "do no wrong, be kind to everyone" kind of person, Corrin will not feel like your character. And not only that, but everything he/she does, no matter how stupid or horrible it is, they'll ultimately get high praise for it. Not only that, but they're often clueless and stupid when they engage certain characters in supports. A particular gripe I have is male Corrin going up to Forrest and assuming that he was into guys simply because he makes himself look like a girl, though Forrest did respond very well to his dumb presumptions. Though in hindsight, it could be that male Corrin was secretly harboring feelings for Forrest. The female Corrin supports with Forrest, on the other hand, are actually quite nice. I know that Corrin is supposed to be the friendly forest child who knows nothing of the outside world, but often it comes across as annoying when he/she expresses cluelessness, and it isn't quite as endearing as, say, when Goku in the original Dragon Ball anime would smack or kick the pelvis of female characters to check if they have balls. I think all that I really like about Corrin is found in the female Corrin supports. And the female Corrin designs. And sometimes they recognize that they aren't perfect, even though the narrative tries its absolute best to suggest otherwise. But I don't think they really ever grow as a character. #10: Sophie I like the idea that she's supposed to eventually tame Avel. She seems like a somewhat toned down Cynthia. I'll admit, she's a lot more endearing to me than Cynthia is. And hey, she has a rather small goal (to impress her father and master riding Avel), but if you read her epilogue, you'll know that she becomes a coveted cavalier. In that sense, I like her, because it shows that those who don't desire much can do great things. #11: Shura Same with the other Corrinsexuals. He's a pretty nice character with an interesting backstory, but he's lacking story presence and supports, which is a shame. It's hard to make judgments on a lot of these characters because you don't have much material to judge them by. It's just a shame that all the Corrinsexuals are relegated to their roles while other sub-par characters get loads of dialogue because they all deserve more supports (and it'd be sensible to think that they'd be chatting with at least some of the others). I can't wait to comment on more of these characters. A lot of my juice was spent on complaining about Corn-bread, but I'd like to gush about my favorite characters, as well.
