  1. Most of the people I ask say 5* Alphonse is mediocre. I want to train him up because I like his design and such, but I'm scared of wasting resources on him. They say 5* Sharena is better, but still not amazing. I don't now who to believe sometimes ;=; I honestly have a feeling that Lucina is going to take it, just based on how crazy popular that she is.
  2. I feel bad for Alfonse because he's already overshadowed by pretty much every other prince/lord in his own game. Not that he's not useful, but he starts as a 2*, and never really reaches the heights of others. It's kind of sad, since I think he's kind of cool as a character. Nope. It's "Sharena" through and through. I think most people make the mistake because "Shareena" is a more common spelling of it. I made the same mistake for that reason. Not to mention, we've already got a Sheena, so I think a lot of it is rollover from that.
  3. One thing I'm glad that they did with Eldigan is change his title to "Lionheart," which I thought they would. I don't want to be thinking of Mufasa and Simba every time I bring him up in conversation. Ah, point taken then. But in that case, Seliph, get the hell over it. You accomplished your huge, lofty goal and now you're basically ruling the continent. Shut the hell up about your inferiority complex, guy. Your father didn't do anything comparable to slaying a dark god and essentially destroying an evil cult. Partially joking, partially serious. :P
  4. I was lucky enough to pull a 4* Sheena in my most recent pull, and it's an absolute bitch to train her up because of that one-space move. I feel like she's got a good stat spread and good potential, but good lord is training her up jank as all hell due to the way maps are structured. And yup, she's the only armor unit I got at the moment. As for duplicates, this game seems to have some sort of obsession with giving me 3* Fir, Hana, and Shanna. I've gotten three of each so far.
  5. That would be so sad! Considering we all know what happened to Greil at the beginning of Path of Radiance... Right. I almost feel like the localizers are self-aware, and give people little pseudo-hints and clues to their *cough* "real" *cough* relationship. I feel like they're having just as much fun as the rest of us sometimes, especially with Ephraim's rant. XD Narcian is pretty funny. I don't have him yet, but he's just hilariously foppish. Definitely makes him stand out among the rest of Binding Blade's cast. By the way, here's the video for people who don't want to have to pull up a new tab and search it up.
  6. Whoa, really cool video. I never knew about all this stuff, and a history lesson is always interesting. I never knew "chivalry" meant different things to different people back in the day, a lot of which contradict one another. I think in FE, we get knights that embody all of the different definitions of chivalry, from the romantic and noble to the ruthless, competitive and violent. That's pretty cool.
  7. Finished listening to all the voice overs. Eldigan sounds scary as hell. I always imagined him with a softer, but still intense voice. He sounds like he's about to tear someone apart whenever he screams. Chill out, guy. Lol. And Narcian's art is hilarious. The guy looks like he's about to pop a blood vessel in each one. It's pretty sweet that Ephraim and Eirika's death cries are each others' names. Sweet...or suspicious? I'm on to you two, especially after Ephraim's rant earlier... Kidding, kidding. Lol. Though is it just me, or did Eirika pronounce his name with an "a" sound rather than an "e" sound, like "Ay-frum" rather than "Ee-frum." Is that canon? Because...I kind of dig it. And Ephraim, calm the hell down, you crazy person. You sound like you're...getting something else out of this battle thing. And Donnel's death quote is him apologizing to his mother. That's so sad.
  8. Pretty much this. NES-era games have a lot of problems when viewing them from the modern day, as well as strange design choices, considering video games were a completely new medium at the time. Designers learned from experience on what mechanics could be frustrating to play with, as well as us simply having more powerful technology capable of doing more. I also think it's a case of people being spoiled by the much expanded content of the later games in the series. Take Shadow Dragon, for example; on its own, it's a fine strategy RPG game, but it's also a very slightly updated version of a game that came out 20 years ago, and it lacks the bells and whistles that, say, the GBA games and the Tellius games had. People had come to expect those features from FE, and because it didn't have them, it was viewed much less favorably Gaiden was a very experimental game, even in the context of the era. I'm not entirely sure how well-received it was during its release in Japan, but I imagine a lot of the new mechanics didn't go over well with fans of the first game, the health-using magic being one of them.
  9. Yeah, I'm not saying he can't be useful, but in a question of "which units are the best in Conquest," I think that Silas just plain doesn't make the cut, especially in comparison to people like Xander. Fair enough. Just bringing up that Keaton has a much better chance of surviving a mage attack than Xander, with a better stat spread in speed. The majority of Conquest units can't double, so I agree that doubling shouldn't be something that marks down Silas. But again, I definitely don't see him as one of the best units.
  10. I mean, just personally, I dislike having it a short 'i' rather than a long 'i'. I much prefer "Tie-tane-ee-uh" to "Ti-ton-ya." The former sounds more powerful to me, fitting of the character, whereas latter just sounds a bit wonky to me, whether or not it's the official pronunciation. It's just a matter of preference. I was always of the opinion that "Effie" is her full name, rather than a nickname. But then again, Radiant Dawn had a case of reversing this, with "Eddie" being renamed "Edward." Maybe it's because Edward is a far more common name than Euphemia. I don't know. For Gwendolyn, I mean, I'm not saying they changed it for no reason, or that the change doesn't make sense, I just don't like the sound of flow of the name. It stands out as a bit awkward to me...in a bad way, compared to Roy, Wolt, Clarine, and Klein, for example. Not that that problem in particular is unique to them. FE4's name localizations made sense, considering they're pretty much all Norse mythology references, but I can't help but prefer "Johan" and "Johalva" to "Iuchar" and "Iucharba." I use the localized names regardless just for fidelity, but sometimes I prefer the originals. And then there are the names which should definitely have been changed. Like Asseray to Artur. Good on them for that one.
  11. Damn. I was going off of his Japanese name (Misheil)'s pronunciation, but yeah, that changed it up quite a bit. I mean, at least with Caeda, it's pronounced nearly the same as Shiida while being easier on the eyes. But I'm not gonna start ranting on weird name changes or pronunciations here. (Gwendolyn from Wendy is...strange...and how the hell do they pronounce the first 'i' in "Titania" with a short vowel rather than a long vowel, it just doesn't sound right)
  12. Really?! Finally! I was waiting for someone to do this. Nice! I always thought it was "Meesh-uh-liss." How accurate am I, before I get a chance to pull up the video?
  13. Seems like it. Realistically speaking, everyone has Sharena, whereas few people have the other participants...So it seems like Sharena has an advantage from the start, if more points are accrued by putting the lord in question on your team.
  14. At least it's better than everyone's 0% resistance growth in the first game. I mean, what even was the point of including that stat at all? Lol.
  15. While "Cavalier" can indeed be used to refer to the horse-mounted troops, it can also be an adjective, albeit an archaic one; a "cavalier" person is one who's reckless and charges forward without thinking, throws caution to the wind and whatnot, derived from the same horse-mounted troops.
  16. Silas is reliable in my opinion, but definitely not one of the better units in Conquest. He's a very bog-standard cavalier: He won't necessarily struggle, but he's also not anything special, with average/decent stats across the board, but no real strengths. I think the experience used to train him can be better used on a more useful unit, personally. At the very least, Keaton is better at tanking mages than Xander; despite having bad resistance, it's not quite as paper as Xander's. Not to mention, his better speed means that he doubles some of the time, whereas Xander doubling is a very rare event (not that he needs to most of the time, and both are good units in my book). And he's got Better Odds, while Xander doesn't have a comparable healing skill, meaning that you won't really have to waste staff uses on Keaton unless it's a real emergency.
  17. My idea is that it's because cavaliers in general tend to live, train and deploy in large groups, and these large cavalier groups tend to make up the bulk of FE armies. We get kind of the same with Pegasus knights and wyvern riders; really, any soldier-type unit classifies as a "social [x]." I do think that the Red-Green cavalier archetypes being best buddies for the most part plays a part in the name, as does the fact that you often get two or more cavaliers whenever you recruit them. Though in a western sense, the name is a bit strange. Changing the name was a good choice on the localization's part.
  18. Oh, I'd definitely feel insecure if I was Ike's kid. I think a lot of the pressure, living up to the example I mean, the guy took down the creation goddess of the world! That's...quite something, to say the least. Same goes for the kid of any of the main lords, really...except for Roy and Lilina, I guess, because posthumous writing means that Eliwood and Hector's exploits in Blazing Blade weren't really referenced in Binding Blade. And yeah, while I definitely think Seliph is mid-game, I definitely feel Eliwood is post-game. Not only does he have his horse, but he mentions how proud he is of his son Roy...Though he should be older Eliwood, because he mentions that Roy eclipses him as a warrior, which wouldn't have happened if he was roughly 30ish year old Eliwood that he is in Blazing Blade's epilogue. All the age shenanigans.
  19. I don't think the Seliph in Heroes is post-game Seliph, considering he talks about how scared he is of living up to other peoples' expectations of him, and how much he still wants to be like his father. I think Kiran plucked Seliph right out from the middle of the game...which is a scary thought. Who's left leading those armies?
  20. Why has no one made a sprite-based Chrom mascot attachment for Google Chrome...I need this in my life... Lucina isn't technically a princess though, so she shouldn't even be eligible... Her world kind of blew up and there's no Ylissean monarchy in her time. Baby Lucina is technically the princess in the current time. I know, I know, splitting hairs and whatnot. Seliph is only technically a duke even because Chalphy no longer really exists in his time too, etc. Just had to bring it up, lol. Marth would be at a disadvantage in that case, with a healer while everyone else gets a damage dealer on their side. Poor Marth would be the underdog.
  21. Early guns as a whole were pretty crappy - they had a tendency to jam or misfire, their accuracy sucked, they had very poor range for a ranged weapon, they created a lot of noise and smoke, reloading was a huge hassle, and they were in general were inferior to bows in most every way. Granted, we can overlook a lot of that in fiction land, but it would still be on the back of my mind, bothering me about them. Not sure I like the idea of including them... I suppose if we stuck with Awakening's more Renaissance-era setting as opposed to the more traditionally medieval setting of FE, they would make some sense in being included, but...eh, they just don't seem all that interesting to me. Crossbows I liked, even though I never really used them, because they fit in neatly with the setting, and them being bows that don't apply the user's strength, but have a higher base damage due to the firing mechanism, makes sense. Although...a grizzled musketeer does sound like a cool concept for a character, as do small legions of musketeers. Huh, guess I'm on the fence about this one.
  22. Uh. No. Stats matter because dumping extremely limited resources into a unit with supbar stats when there's perfectly usable units with great stats that you don't have to funnel money and items into is a hassle. Odin is the former. Keaton (for example) is the latter. Stats matter because, you know, you need them to kill enemies. You apply them every time you press the confirm button to kill a unit, because that's how the majority of the game works. Because if your unit has mediocre stats, they won't be killing anything fast or easy, and are liable to get killed themselves. You can laud support boosts and child boosts all day, but at the end of the day, Odin himself (not the supports he gives, not the children he has, but the man himself), is a mediocre unit. Does he provide some perks? Sure. Can he be usable with a ton of effort and resource dumping? Sure. But he's not a good unit, especially in comparison to other units. Simple. Easy. EDIT: Conquest is a game mode which pushes units like Odin into the dust. You need units that excel rather than barely scrape by. Odin will fail to do much damage to anything with his mediocre attacking stats, fail to double anything with his mediocre speed, not really be able to take a hit with his mediocre defense, and just be plain mediocre all around by midgame. Leo, Ophelia and Izana are leagues ahead of him in usability without much resource dumping or shifting this support or that support around. Again, only so much experience, money, and items to go around on Conquest. Why waste them on trying to make Odin usable when you could be buffing already good characters? Keaton, on the other hand, with his enormous strength and defense, one-round kills things more often than not, has enough speed to avoid being doubled by most enemies, and has enough defense that he takes little damage from physical-attacking units. His skill growth is good enough that he gets critical hits fairly often as well. Now, he can be worn down through his poor resistance, but he also has a skill which heals 40% of his HP every other turn. One of these sounds objectively better than the other.
  23. Voting no on this. Gaiden's story and characters are fine just the way that they are. It's a case of "if it's not broken, don't try and fix it." It isn't like Awakening or Fates, which were written with the idea that the Avatar would be included from the start (though Awakening and Fates have their own problems with writing, but that's a topic for another thread...) I didn't think an avatar was needed in New Mystery, and Kris' inclusion is indeed awkward, to the point that they upstaged a lot of the original characters and story. I'd rather not see that happen with Gaiden. Personally I don't think we'll be seeing one at all, since no information has been released about a potential Avatar, and in New Mystery, Fates, and Awakening a lot of the advertisements just focused on the mechanic's inclusion. Don't think they'd be saving it for a "surprise! you're a character in this too!" reveal.
  24. Lol. Okay, dude. I mean, when the majority of people in the thread are telling you that you are the wrong one, and you just ragequit the conversation, it says a lot. Keep living in your own world, I suppose You can keep trying to laud Odin as a great unit all you want. Doesn't change the facts that he's not, I'm afraid. And Keaton is a good unit, as most people say. You're completely missing the point anyway, and you just don't seem to get it. Support bonuses does not a good unit make. Shoving a bunch of items down a unit to make it any way usable does not a good unit make. Having 1 range doesn't equal a bad unit, home skillet. Keaton is a far more useful unit than Odin without half of the setup and resource dumping that Odin requires to be anything other than subpar.
  25. I'm not the person who said that, but I think in this case, it means that Ilyana's inclusion is awkward and odd because she offers absolutely nothing in terms of character or story (thus sticking out amid a well-written and developed cast, for the most part). She's forgettable because she has no personality aside from "hungry all the time."
