Side quest needs 3 old Shields. The 3rd one appears on the top left on turn 19. With Swarm Dark Mage, which is also part of that collector guy quest. Swarm i can probably capture later somewhere, but i doubt i can get another old Shield

He is good in maps with water. Almost essential. Also hiring means they stay for 1 chapter.

Supported and Commander! Adel and Leon support each other with 20 hit each! Commander gives everyone in 3 hexes area 10 hit! Make sure to check everyone's skills! Also, fights generally end when someone gets hit. Of course skills and weapons change that

Byleth isn't a blackhole though. The game puts much much more focus on the lords themselves than Byleth, and people can actually build relationships with other. He will seem like a Blackhole if you don'T do supports or Paralogues. Well, FE's support system is retarded anyway
