  1. Chapter 20 complete. Looks like I'm keeping up a schedule of doing one chapter every day but wednesdays and thursdays, so yeah, looks like I'll be able to do some paralogues! Any requests? Also, regarding Anthony:
  2. It occurred to me recently that the thought of early promoting has never really crossed my mind until the last few games, and I don't actually know how early-promoted units gained experience in the older ones since I basically never did it. Can anybody fill me in on how it worked in like 5-12? I'm looking for information on it and I just can't find it.
  3. It's the combination of good defense and resistance that makes him a reliable enemy-phase unit, since he has way more resistance than Ryoma does. Thanks for the clarification about the internal level though. Strange, it definitely felt like more than 2 levels. But yeah, while it's a close call, Leo still wins defensively in the long run and kicks Ryoma's ass in terms of resistance immediately, and also has a much more reliable and predictable dual guard pattern without astras and crits to throw it off.
  4. Not quite. Bushido may make it seem like that, but after a bit of training, Leo decisively comes out on top. Leo starts at a lower level, with an internal level that is five levels lower still just like with Camilla, and he still has an equal defense score and a superior defense growth, not to mention way better resistance base and growth. Leo will outpace Ryoma in the defense department very quickly since his experience gain will consistently taper off five levels later than it would for Ryoma or indeed any other normal character. He's a fantastic candidate for an eternal seal considering his internal level all but guarantees he'll hit level 20 with several maps to spare if you've been wise about your paralogue usage, so yes, he's all but guaranteed to be more durable than Ryoma.
  5. Why don't you try a little experiment: Play Birthright and Conquest ironman. Any difficulty is fine, but I suggest at least hard. And then tell me with a straight face if you still think Ryoma is better than Xander or Leo. I'm betting you won't. Mark my words, do ironman once and you will never look at dodgetanks the same way again.
  6. I take issue with your logic for putting Ophelia above Leo. Personally I feel a unit that can survive fighting on the enemy phase will always be better than a unit who specializes in the player phase with very few exceptions, and Leo is reasonably tanky thanks to his passable bases and good growths. Now, granted, the stuff I've heard people do with Ophelia on Conquest Lunatic frankly boggles the mind, so she probably deserves that #1 spot anyway, but decidedly not for the reasons you mentioned. Between his great tome and powerful magic growth and generally lower demands for resistance, Leo has no difficulty one-rounding enemies, and he's far more durable than any other mage in the game besides maybe Odin, and even then Leo has better all-around stats.
  7. Hahahahahaha... so... chapter 19 complete... and holy shit... I got away with something so batshit insane that I'd almost refuse to believe it happened if I didn't have screenshots. Oh my god... that's probably the most hilarious mindless fun I've ever had playing Fire Emblem. Wow. Revelation still isn't really engaging at all from a strategy point of view, but holy shit was that moment fucking magical. Granted, this was only possible due to an insanely conveniently-timed coincidence, and it could have happened in any version of the game, but still... I can't wait to write and publish this entry eventually.
  8. But they don't need to surpass him, they just need to be as good. Competitive works with equal or greater level than him, not just greater than. I agree Takumi's underwhelming obviously, but I don't think his skill is one of the reasons why. It's pretty much the best skill a unit in his situation could ask for.
  9. To be fair, that is one of the ways that his reduced opportunities for experience works in his favor.
  10. This continues to puzzle me. I've constantly heard people say that Takumi is a top-tier unit, and tons of people say he's better than Leo, and this just makes no sense to me. Leo has 1-2 range and great all-around growths (and even passable bases when he starts) and thus is one of the only units, alongside the avatar, Xander, dread fighters and a sufficiently babied Odin, who can do no-strings-attached 1-2 range combat without being extremely fragile, which is essential for clearing out enemies on the enemy phase. Takumi, meanwhile, is basically locked to player phase combat, and while the game took great pains to make archers more powerful, he still suffers the inevitable downside to being a player-phase unit: he gets several times less experience than other units who can fight multiple enemies a turn on the enemy phase, and this, combined with his mediocre speed, means that unless you really baby him he really falls off in the late game. Why does Leo have such a bad reputation, and why does Takumi have such a good one?
  11. Oh sweet Jesus. I actually have a huge treatise on what I personally would do to fix Fates's story, but the problem is that it borrows some elements from my as-of-yet unfinished narrative let's play, so I can't actually go over them here until I finish that or I risk spoiling a pretty big plot twist in my story. But basically it goes the route of making both sides sympathetic and following a noble cause. However... Upon playing Conquest more, a second idea for how the Fates story could have worked occurred to me, though not actually in Fates. I actually think that Conquest would have been really interesting as a stand-alone game with a lowered emphasis on Hoshido and more of an emphasis on the politics of Nohr, and Corrin's attempt, with his siblings' cooperation, to take Garon down from within the system. Some sort of Game of Thrones style political thriller of subterfuge and deceit where you help the children of an evil empire stop their country's fell legacy once and for all, with Corrin being the last remaining member of the conquered bloodline of the divine dragon heroes. You'd have to balance doing the right thing and not getting caught defying Garon, the sorts of things Leo talked about in chapter 14, except actually shown and put into practice like in chapter 2. But again, the most important thing is that the siblings have to be in on it. They have to recognize their father is a monster who has to be stopped, because having it just be Corrin for the entire game leaves the other main characters absolutely no room to grow and develop as characters.
  12. Chapter 18 complete! At this rate I might actually be able to fit in a paralogue or two I didn’t show last times. Are there any paralogues that you’d particularly like to see if it turns out I have time?
  13. Alright, good news everyone! I am officially in Valla! Chapter 17 complete, 11 more to go!
  14. Are you sure the page didn’t fail to load? I’ve seen that before. I’ll check it out later, but then again i’ll have to re-format everything eventually because of whoever decided to retroactively change the line spacing, only keep half of old posts the same, and then for good measure break all labeled spoilers.
  15. Although I was planning on using screenshots for the rest of that, but that plan's pretty much shot now. Also, just letting everyone know, this latest entry is the last one I'll be posting until I have all the screenshots. It's become apparent that in order to do the story justice there's too much I'll have to write in each entry, so I'll save it all for later and make absolutely sure I get the whole game complete.
  16. I have just one major piece of advice for you: Finish this quickly. Miiverse is going down in a little over a month and a half.
  17. Yeah, unfortunately since miiverse is closing down this is postponed, as I need to get all the screenshots for Dakota's War Journal done before it becomes impossible.
  18. Right, doing chapter 10 now, though I won't be posting it until I have all the pics for everything obviously, but seriously... SERIOUSLY. I almost want to skip this chapter entirely because it's not only so bullshit and stupid but it's also so ridiculously easy that it kind of completely kills the mood of the story I'm trying to tell. What is Dakota supposed to say about this battle aside from "The enemies have put themselves in a situation where they're all easily ambushed and continuously hand me tons of free shit"? What the hell were the developers thinking!? I have something really cool planned for the story of this chapter, but the gameplay itself is so uneventful that I can't even make it mesh with the story! Please tell me the whole third path isn't like this and that the difficulty picks up eventually! PLEASE!
  19. Maybe there isn't a gameplay reason why I'm not using Hayato. Did I ever say he died? If you're talking about the status effects, that was something I wanted to add to mix it up. And the dead/evil characters are going to be killed off offscreen so I don't have to worry about them showing up in screenshots.
