  1. And that's fine; I myself tend to rate foot units lower than mounts for this reason. I'm just sensitive to any statements of "one HAS to do this" or "should" do that in this specific case. It's a ratings thread involving many different people with many different criteria for how they're judging a unit; the results of the list aren't necessarily going to be what they would be if only one person were ranking the units.
  2. Indeed; that's why I never go after people's play styles. The only reason I bring it up is because Inference asked if he "really had to put a disclaimer" for every time he criticized someone's way of playing. He seemed to be expressing frustration over my response to him; that, to me, implied that he never wanted a counter-argument to start with. Hence, I told him that it would be a good idea to put a disclaimer at the beginning of his posts if he doesn't feel like having a discussion about what he said. Otherwise, yeah; my natural instinct is going to be to tell him exactly why I disagree with him.
  3. I'd...say it'd be a good idea whenever you say things like "you guys need to do more of X, and start doing more of Y". Tone and intention are much harder to tell over the Internet, and we've already had some debates in this thread involving guys like me, Eleanor Hume, Valkama, and others. So I, at the very least, am more sensitive to any possible insults to their way of ranking the characters. Does that sound reasonable?
  4. No, actually, we do not . There are many different ways of playing FE4, and Olikad never said we had to judge the characters in any standardized way; therefore, we have free reign to say whatever we want, for whatever reasons we want. For example, I'm judging purely from a casual perspective; an EFFICIENCY perspective, I find, is too restrictive, as there are only a select few units that even get used under an efficiency model. Gen 1, for example, is basically just a Sigurd solo with occasional help from Aideen, Levin, Ethlin, and Fury; MAYBE Claude too, but ONLY if you're planning to use the Rescue Staff glitch. Oh, and if the Efficiency player wants to get the Knight Ring, they will want to use Finn and Cuan in Chapter 2; but that's not necessary..
  5. Awesome! Here it is now! ------------ Ah, Shanan... as Sigurd so eloquently put it; "You're the man, Shanan!". In fact, he is the perfect example of why growths aren't necessarily a reliable measure of how useful he is. I mean, he's got Alec's STR growth and Noish's SPD growth; and were it not for his Major Odo, he'd have Noish's SKL growth too! And yet, he starts out as one of the most powerful characters in the game, with a whopping 18 STR, 22 SKL, 23 SPD, and 13 DEF. His HP is a middling 38, but even THAT grows huge, thanks to his 120% HP growth (thanks again, Major Odo)! So already, he's pretty, especially when you factor in Meteor Sword. What REALLY seals the deal, however, is his Balmung! It's literally Holsety on a sword! The only differences are that the Balmung has 3 WT compared to Holsety's 5 WT, and also lacks 2 Range. But other than that, it's basically Holsety! Combine that with Shanan's bases and growths, and you got yourself a 53 Might and 105 Evade beat stick with app at Level 30; and he also has Pursuit, Continue, and Meteor a Sword to back it up! His stats go so high, that he could even kill the final Chapter 10 boss (though said boss is still strong enough to one shot him; do not attempt on an AAAA Rank run)! That said though, he STILL doesn't have a horse, he doesn't have good 2 Range, and his durability IS a little shaky when you first get him. For those reasons, I have him slightly lower than Oifaye, despite his much higher raw stats. Instead, I'll give him a 8/10 just for being yet another awesome crutch unit. His stats certainly dwarf Oifaye's, but his lack of horseback holds him back from being quite as reliable against non-boss units. ------------ Sent from my iPad
  6. I was looking at the dialogue for FE4 for my next update, and ran across this patch of dialogue here... Arthur: Heh heh… You call your pegasus Mahnya? Fee: Arthur, would you quit already? Look, we’ve made it this far so put a lid on it! It seemed odd to me that Arthur, a generally good character, would be such a troll across an entire trip, so I took a look at Bookofholsety's dialogue... Arthur: Hah! Mahnya? Is that really what you call your pegasus? Fee: Oh, pipe down, Arthur. I don't care if we're nearly there, 'cause I'll still just dump you if you don't shut it! And...it does indeed make Arthur come off better (because here, it sounds as though Arthur wasn't doing that the entire trip). But, I also wanted to cross-check it with the original script... ------------------------------------------------------- (アーサー) ふーん、 そのペガサスはマーニャっていうのか (フィー) アーサー、いいかげんにしてよ もう少し、もう少しって、 結局イザークまできたじゃない! ------------------------------------------------------- Now, as I've said before, my translation skills aren't anything exceptional. But just from what I can piece together, it seems that the Japanese dialogue is supposed to be something more like... ------------------------------------------------------- Arthur: Heh! You call your pegasus Mahnya? Fee: Oh knock it off, Arthur. It's just a little bit longer...just a little bit longer till we've finally gotten there. Honestly! I didn't even want to GO to Isaac! ------------------------------------------------------- Is...this about right? I'm having trouble with Fee's very last sentence there. All I can make out of "イザークまできたじゃない" is... "Isaac until haven't gone to!" So I took my best guess as to what that amounted to. Am I on the right track?
  7. And if that doesn't work, you can always just grind off the Chapter 5 reinforcements like I do here... http://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=146222
  8. Actually, that would still make them more useful than units like Aira. If they're not being attacked, that also means they have free reign to attack whoever they want on Player Phase. It'd be like deploying Jamka if Jamka was as hard to kill as Levin :) .
  9. Really, it's clear that there just wasn't much thought put into the Ending generator. Leaf and Tinny, for example, have a conversation where Leaf outright TELLS her that she's gonna be the new queen of Thracia, and she giggles and says nothing to disprove that. FE4 was a rushed game, and while it's still extremely good...you can sometimes tell where the holes are.
  10. JOHAN Class: Axe Knight (Level 12) Holy Blood: Minor Neir Personal Skills: Ambush Class Skills: None Stats: 40 HP (110%) 15 Strength (40%) 0 Magic (5%) 10 Skill (20%) 12 Speed (50%) 12 Defense (60%) 1 Resistance (5%) 5 Luck (10%) My thoughts: Honestly, I...don't have much to say in regards to him. He's budget Lex, in a Generation where even the real Lex isn't all that impressive anymore. He's just...so underwhelming; and worse yet, he steals EXP from your other more powerful units if you decide to give him kills. I guess I'll give him a 5/10 just for being on a horse, and for having decent base stats, but...man does he leave a bad taste in my mouth. Don't even particularly like him as a character either. The guy just comes off as a meaner version of Sain, with quotes like... "To die at my hand...you should feel flattered" And while Johalva seems genuinely ashamed of the child hunts, Johan's Chapter 6 dialogue seems to imply that he doesn't care much about anything besides being with Lakche. But don't worry; I don't let bias like that interfere with my rankings. JOHALVA Class: Axe Fighter (Level 12) Holy Blood: Minor Neir Personal Skills: Charge Class Skills: None Stats: 42 HP (110%) 16 Strength (40%) 0 Magic (0%) 7 Skill (50%) 16 Speed (10%) 14 Defense (60%) 1 Resistance (5%) 5 Luck (10%) My thoughts: Many people say he's worse than Johalva...and I can understand that. His bases are mostly similar, but he doesn't have a horse like Johalva does; and that's almost always a death sentence in a game where horses rule the world. However, Johalva has one VERY important niche in an AAAA Rank run; his performance in the Arena. Because while his bases are mostly similar to Johan, his PROMOTION is leagues better. He gains access to the Killer Bow and Hero Bows, which both weigh significantly less than even the Hero Axe; his Speed post-promotion speed disadvantage is rendered null and void on account of this. And besides that, his Killer Bow crits are dynamite! The guy's natural speed and power are high enough that he actually CAN kill most things with the Killer Bow, especially if he's got the Pursuit Ring. And he WILL have the Pursuit Ring if he's got Lex!Lakche as his wife; the girl's a walking cash dispensor when she doesn't need the Elite Ring for leveling! But...I'm doing these ranks from a casual perspective, not an AAAA Rank run. So I think I'll give him...a 2/10. He's better than Johan for the EXP rank, but otherwise, he's Ardan tier.
  11. Oh, Bookofholsety IS considering polishes to the script? Cool; do you have any idea whether or not he looks at the posts in this thread? I have a number of very thorough comments on how I'd alter the Prologue, and some of Chapter 1
  12. Julia is...an interesting unit. She's like her mother, but with much needed upgrades in every way. Better skills, better stats, better availability, better weapon selection...better everything. Plus, she has an automatic niche to fill fighting the countless mages you fight in Chapter 7. Heck, she does great against MOST of the units you can fight in Chapter 7 if you got Rezire! The only units who are a MASSIVE threat to her are Jabarro and his squad; aside from that, Julia stacks up pretty well! And if her stats aren't up to snuff, you can always level her up via the Arena. Then of course, there's her promotion, which comes second only to the Master Knight's in just how broken it is. +7 Mag, +5 Skl, and +8 Spd all cover just about every weakness she could have when paired with Rezire. That said though, she's not...amazing. Her offense is good, and Rezire helps her to survive in situations she's never normally survive...but her survival isn't guaranteed. Rezire still has 12 WT, she only has 5 Move, and Julia's Skill isn't high enough to where she can always hit the people she fights. I wouldn't be comfortable soloing entire groups with her the same way I could with Celice or Sigurd (unless they're all Armour Knights or all generic mages). Then of course, there's the fact that she leaves after Chapter 9, and doesn't join till the tail end of Final. 1.75 Chapters doesn't sound like a lot, except those just so happen to be the hardest parts of Gen 2. And yes, she can trivialize Julius, that's true...but I know of at least one other easy AND reliable way of murdering the guy. It's a surprise I'm saving for my LP, but...well, let's just say Julius isn't nearly a big enough problem for me to give THAT much weight to Julia's ability to dominate him. EDIT: Plus, there's the fact that one could get saddled with Aura instead, if they always decide to conquer Sophara instead of Isaac. And if THAT happens, all her early game combat expertise goes out the window. I wouldn't normally mention it, but again; I'm doing all these from a casual perspective. So, I suppose I'd give her a 5/10. She's a great combat unit, she's a great staff bot, she comes early, and she can thump Julius real good...but she also bails out at PRECISELY the time her talents are most needed. And aside from Julius, there aren't any times where she shines THAT brightly. There aren't any times in the game where I think "whoa, she made that part SO much easier than it would have been!". And that's not getting into how badly her combat falls if a new player gets Aura instead of Rezire. So it's hard for me to rate her as high as the likes of Oifaye and Levin.
  13. Perhaps. I will admit though; this had me laughing, both for it's tongue-and-cheekness, and because I actually DO have Asperger's... I've gotten better at the whole "social lubrication" part, but I'm still fairly blunt and direct in what I say. Small talk is something I have to put conscious effort into.
  14. Oh, got it! Thank you so much Tequila! Thanks to you, I've now managed to restore the default Effectiveness multiplier to 3x! God bless you!
  15. First off, this is a hack that Blazer says will help me to change the Effectiveness Coefficient for all weapons. I'm digging around with FE7 as my very first attempt at hacking, and wish to change the values back to 3x (like in the Japanese version). However, I don't believe I was able to follow his instructions correctly; I got confused at the very end. So, here is where the "Variable Effectiveness Hack" can be found... http://feuniverse.us/t/random-hacks-by-blazer-ryrumeli/228 And here's what I did for the 1st Copy and Paste... And here's what I did for the 2nd Copy and Paste... Assuming that that's what I was supposed to do (and I'm still not sure it was), I then got stuck on this part... So, first of all, I don't know what "Little Endian" is. It seems to me like all you have to do is an "08" to wherever you put your value (so in my case; "FFFEB0" would become "08B0FEFF"), and then paste that into the same place that I pasted "01DCBC09"...but I'm not confident. Am I on the right track so far?
  16. Pfeh...that's what I was afraid of; that means Julius has an automatic 40% of activating it, before counting in possible AS advantages. Thanks Valkama!
  17. I know that it uses the following formula to determine how often it activates... [user’s Attack Speed – Enemy’s Attack Speed + (HP/2)]% But...whose HP are we talking here? Are we talking about the user's HP, or the enemy's? I ask because Chapter 10 Julius is either a massive threat, or a non-issue depending on whether it's his HP being counted or the enemy's.
  18. Not sure how I'm gonna rate them honestly; probably gonna have to look at some more drafts and 0% playthroughs. And again, we have very different ways of looking at things; Oifaye is the ultimate crutch character. Yes, I never use him, and yes, he is destined to be surpassed by units with more potential; but his strength lies in him always being reliable, no matter how badly a new player messed up. Shanan and Aless are going to be your only juggernauts if you really messed things up, and neglected to train up Celice. Blame the American education system for that. "C's" are considered average, and they represent a 70-79% on a test. 60-69% is concerned sub-par, and anything lower than that is considered an outright failure. I'm not sure if you live in America, but that's pretty much how we've been conditioned to think. Only if you've been training them. Aless and Oifaye are the only ones strong enough to survive a shot at base level. But not all new players are going to have those two. Indeed; that's why I mentioned giving him the Brave Sword instead. It's only 8000G, Celice gets a free one from Patty/Daisy, and the Arena gives 17,500G upon clearing it.
  19. First of all, I would like to change my rating of Levin to a 9/10 instead of a 10/10. He's not quite as good as Sigurd, and his rating should reflect that. Now then: Oifaye was...a fairly tough character for me to rate. In fact, he and all of the substitute characters were tough. I've never once used him or ANY of the Subs, so I had to rely primarily on reading draft playthroughs, speculation, and word-of-mouth in order to rate them. And in Oifaye's case, I have arrived at this conclusion. He is one of the best units in the entire game...but not for the reasons you would think. You see, for anyone not familiar with the series, there's a character arch-type called the “Jeigan”. The “Jeigan” is a character that tends to appear in the beginning of all FE games. Their whole shtick is that they're really good at the start, but mediocre at the end. Moreover, most FE games have heavier EXP penalties for having high level character kill low level enemies, so the “Jeigan” becomes a beginner's trap. Feed them too much EXP, and you'll have neglected your other, weaker characters; and all in exchange for absolutely terrible level ups on a unit that you were never meant to keep using to the end. Like FE7 Marcus, he is the ultimate crutch character. He is completely and utterly outclassed by all of the typical heavy hitters that people love...but that doesn't matter. Because unlike said heavy hitters, he comes at the very beginning of the game, doesn't require any investment, and is still JUST strong enough to make the game winnable. It doesn't matter if all your other units got killed, or if you messed up your pairings; he'll still carry your team until you get other guys like Sety. For example; you see this guy below? He's a Chapter 7 boss that's got Reptor's weapon now, and he literally OHKOes almost everyone on your team (provided you haven't been raising them)! Celice gets OHKOed at base level, Lakche gets OHKOed at base level...even Shanan gets OHKOed! The only two characters who start with high enough stats to survive a hit from him are Oifaye and Aless; and the latter person starts as an enemy unit. This means that one could accidentally lose out on the latter person by killing them, while Oifaye will always be there. Plus, one also gets a free Hero Sword in Chapter 7; so killing Blume is as easy as rigging two criticals. For this reason, I give him a 9/10. Some might rate him lower for the fact that he's not too good in the lategame; but by that point, you have guys like Shanan, Aless, Sety/Hawk, and Narga!Julia. So hey, if Levin's getting a 10/10 from me, may as well give it to Oifaye too.
  20. Well, I mean, it's not like the FE3 version is bad necessarily. I just thought the FE1 version was more emotional; which fit with the whole "I'm a wizened old sage that wished my hands of humanity's foolish ways" things that Gotoh had going for him. The FE3 version sounded more cheerful to me, like I was visiting an item shop. EDIT: Here's the SNES version when pitched down to where the NES was; just in case anyone's curious. My last video didn't loop properly, but this one does.
  21. Yo Valkama! I found an LTC FE4 AAAA Rank run on Nico Nico Douga if you're curious... http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4577715/videoExplorer It has the following turn counts...
