I agree with the sentiment, but it does hold my attention. If only because of the train-wreak factor.

Could this be a translation error/change? Do we need people who know Japanese in here?

I'd say the same of Awakening and Fates. Chrom making one tiny reference to being aware of Fates in yore is just a repeat of his DLC babble from Awakening, and should not be taken the in the least bit seriously. Because, besides that quip, there is no connection, and if the connection is not "real, felt, affecting one or both of the worlds", it might as well not exist, so good riddance with it.

    https://kantopia.wordpress.com/2018/06/10/making-of-fe-does-page-81-confirm-priam-is-ikes-lineal-descendant-also-japanese-fe-fan-opinions/

And yes, it is possible to be a descendant, but not a direct descendant. I think the word to describe Marth in relation to Anri that he is a "collateral" descendant. Though I'm not versed in genealogical terminology.

    1. a person or animal that is descended from a specific ancestor; an offspring.

    2. something deriving in appearance, function, or general character from an earlier form.

    3. an adherent who follows closely the teachings, methods, practices, etc., of an earlier master, as in art, music, philosophy, etc.; disciple.

This actually came up a while ago in this thread. So it's a bit more difficult to explain than just 'Priam is Ike's great-great-how-ever-many-great-grandson'. He might be Ike's descendant, or he may be a dude who is very similar to Ike.

Personally, I think Priam is Ike's descendant. But whatever I think, we can't prove that either way. Only IS can.

So how would you explain the taguel-laguz relation?  It can be get it's in another timeline as well. Also it's very confirmed that other games are in other universes or its random "conclusion"?

Inter-dimensional and inter-universal are a bit difficult to separate. Further supporting this is the fact that Priam (a descendent of Ike) somehow got to the world of Awakening.

On the other hand, I don't think it's ever said that Laguz = Taguel. Yes, there were other types of Taguel than Rabbit, but this doesn't necessarily mean they are the same as the Laguz. They could be two separate, but similar species.

We don't know enough either way, so to argue it one way or another is to devolve to head-cannons.

This is awesome. Where would you put Tellius in the timeline, since Taguel are said to be related to laguz, so probably Tellius is a distant continent in the same world.

Also I know its a reach since other games aren't  confirmed to be in the same universe/timeline but where would Sacred Stones, Elibe and Three Houses match in the timeline?

I suppose that Fates happened centuries or even a millenia before Jugdral to the point that it's a fairytale in Ylisse's time period, so this could explain astral dragons and Naga not being alive, for example, since probably she wasn't born or was a kid.

Been a while since there was movement in this thread.

We do know there a several different worlds. Most of them are in the same universe... Except for Tellius. It's so very different, in many ways I'll not expand upon here. And it's more or less confirmed that Tellius isn't in the same reality as the others. We know Archenea, Valentia, and Jugdral are on the same planet. It's unknown if any of the other continents are on the same planets with the aforementioned 3, or even each other.

For that last bit, we know there are Time-Space portals between the various game's worlds (Dragon's Gate in Elibe and (Unrelated?) Fates, Outrealm Gate in Awakening, etc.), so the other continents aren't necessarily a part of the Archenean world. Of course, we don't know if they are, either. So if I said anything either confirming or denying it, it's just speculation. We just don't know enough.

I honestly think that what you're describing is an excellent argument in favour of the uses per battle system - it makes the big guns more likely to be used simply because you know that it's not going to bite you in the butt five chapters down the road.

I do not know how the numbers develop in 3H in this regard, so this is fully speculative - but it might be good to even have some other restrains in place to nerf long-range spells in this kind of approach. One turn to charge, or a Hyper Beam-esk turn of exhaustion, or the mage needs to stand still while casting them, or even a combination of #1 and #3.

I also like this. Just X charges per chapter works for the weaker tomes, but what of the strong ones? Having 2 shots of your best spell is very restrictive. Making up for the OP-ness by, say, nulling your Move until the end of your next turn would balance siege tomes, and I'd say you could buff the uses of Abraxis/Ragnarok/Hades/Whatever because of a drawback like that. May not work all that well, but it can't be any worse than what we have already.

They sorta did this with SoV with post-battle mourning quotes, but it's probably not what you're looking for. You can tell who's mourning who, and who's quotes are just kinda... generic.

You forgot the fact that some character's (Forsyth and Gray, maybe some others) mentions that their dead friends. See below for Gray's.

    Spoiler

(If both Tobin and Clair are alive)

As a member of the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights, Gray worked diligently at restoring the continent. He applied himself equally to winning Clair's heart, and beat Tobin out in the end. As he was heard to say, "Pick the guy with the big heart, not the pretty face."

(If Clair is alive but Tobin is dead)

Devastated by Tobin's death, Gray was nearly lost to the demon drink until Clair convinced him to clean up. After declining knighthoods in the One Kingdom, the two married and lived out quiet lives. Gray was especially fond of his son, whom he named after his friend.

    (If Clair is dead)

Having lost the woman he loved, Gray surprised even himself by embracing the life of a vagabond and setting off for parts unknown. His friends spared no effort in attempting to track him down, but it was to no avail.

So, clearly IS both can and is able to do things like this, but didn't for TH. Would've been pretty cool, but alas.

So are you talking about Marth, Roy, Eliwood, Lyn, Eirika, Ephraim, Ike, Kris, Chrom, Robin, Corrin, or Micaiah? ;):

Going on an off-topic tangent, but yea, FE Protags are fairly same-y. What did you expect?

More in depth, 'cause I'm half-loopy from weariness.

    • Marth - (Going off of FE12) Is basically a Gary Stu, but is also in great pain over the suffering on both sides of the war(s). He also doesn't know how to deal with his feelings (FE11's end scene with Caeda). So, not then?
    • Roy - It's been to long since I played FE6 last, so no comment.
    • Eliwood - Is a scrub Does make some mistakes.
    • Lyn - Bland Has trauma from her past that does give her trouble.
    • Eirika - Is naïve to the point of stupidity. Why did she trust Lyon? L'arachel strait up told her not to, yet she did.
    • Ephraim - No excesses, he's a Gary Stu.
    • Ike - He's not particularly intelligent. Not to say he's dumb, but he isn't a genius.
    • Kris - Training, training, Grandpa, training, bad at directions, Marth worship, training, bad at cooking, training. And disliking Sirius, I guess.
    • Chrom - He does develop, if only a little.
    • Robin - Avatar worship incarnate. Also technically an Dragon God of Death and Destruction.
    • Corrin - Ditto above, except swapping the 'God' part for 'My naivete is a super-power! I'm also a Demigod!'

Like take for example the infamous shounen power up. It's almost become a meme at this point. You know those moments where the protagonist is being completely overwhelmed by the villain then they have some kind of flashback to their training or friends. Then thanks to the power of friendship unlock some kind of shiny new power to win the fight. I've seen people complain about these moments so often calling it "unrealistic", "contrived", "deus ex Machina", etc. and I can't help but feel that these criticisms are misplaced. Because when it comes to battle shounen, a lot of the time these "power ups" are usually tied to some kind of character moment or thematic beats the story wants to get across. Like for example, Naruto's bijuu mode is about him finally being able to overcome his own hate by befriending his literal inner demon. It also thematically fits with Naruto's overall themes of understanding as a way to overcome loneliness and hate. Naruto is only able to unlock bijuu mode when he and Kurama are finally able to understand one another. It's probably my second favorite moment in the series for that reason. Or a better example would be Luffy's gear second. Sure, he kinda just pulls it out of no where, but the point of the power up isn't that he had to train to get it more so it's there to showcase what he's willing to do in order to protect his friends because gear second comes with pretty terrible side affects in exchange for that power. My point in all this is to say that maybe instead of criticizing a story for doing something you dislike or that you don't understand. Take that extra step to try and understand the story and what it's trying to accomplish instead of mindlessly labeling it as contrived. Because you never know, maybe there are more layers to it than you realize.

(I hid the comment above to save space) I don't watch Anime, so I can't say anything 'bout the examples you provided here.

An example I can comment on is Fates and the Yato's Evolution/Self-repairing shenanigans.

Birthright - First time is because of the R. Sage buffing it with the Fujin Yumi's power, so that's fine. The second time, not so much. Ryoma had been with the party for quite a long time, yet it only Evolved when Corrin needed a power boost to beat Garon. Why? We aren't provided a reason for this. And then it gets broken by Garon-beast's slap-attack. Why does it get fixed? 'Cause of random powers. And it doesn't get broke again when Garon slaps it. Why?

Conquest - First time it's 'cause Leo joins Corrin and co. The question is, why did it wait until after the map to evolve? The second time is the same. Why did it wait until until just before the fight with Garon to evolve?

Revelation - First time R. Sage again. Second time - Wooo, look at that! Random powers strikes again! The Royals have been with you for, what, like 9 Chapters? Why did it wait till now?

Are all of these perfectly logical and not contrived? No. 2 of the examples above do make since - the R. Sage boosts.

In summary, you are correct about all 'power-ups' not being Deus ex Machina. But there still are those that are.

Another thing I see people do a lot that bothers is make unfair comparisons. Comparison on it's own isn't a bad thing and can be useful in critical narrative discussion. However, most of the time when I see people make comparison it's usually under the guise "A is worse than B for not being B" when instead it should be more "A and B are interesting for being A and B". I dislike the former for a couple of reasons. 1. it's just an unfair comparison. All stories are different. Each story has it's own ideas it wants to explore and how to explore them and no story is gonna explore any idea in the same way unless it's intentional. So to comparing stories like that is kind of a moot point. A had no intention of being B, so why does it have to be like B? A is A and B is B. It's like going into a grocery store and complaining that the apples don't look like oranges. Like of course apples aren't gonna look like oranges. They're not oranges. The same is true of stories and characters. And don't even get me started on comparing characters because honestly I just find that kind of gross. Bottom line don't compare the trauma of people real or fictional in that way. It's not okay. I don't care how you try to justify it. 2. you shouldn't have to throw something under the bus to make something else look good. If something is truly good, you should be able to praise it on its own merits without the comparison. The reverse is true as well. If something is bad, you shouldn't need the comparison to say that it's bad. Bottom line you can praise things you like without throwing other stuff under the bus.

Different stories are different. Who'd of thought. You can still compare them and point out what's better between the two. Don't decry it just because they're different.

It's like comparing people, cows, trees, or whatever. Each one is different. But there are still traits that can be compared between them.

In what way, shape or form? I think the fact that this thread is basically a discussion on whether or not she gets overshadowed is conclusive proof that she's about as far from a Mary Sue as it gets. Characters like Corrin and Alm are Mary Sues because they overtake and overshadow everyone else and the plot itself. They bend and distort the story around themselves. A protagonist that arguably gets overshadowed is far from a Mary Sue, so I have to ask: what did you mean by "a little Mary Sue-ish"?

You misinterpreted what I said. "a little Mary Sue-ish" = She has a few of the qualities of a Mary Sue, but is not one.

This I'm not so sure about. Ike can be reckless, but he's rather tempered by Radiant Dawn; I would exactly call him wild or chaotic, especially not when he's standing next to Skrimir. I'd also hesitate about Micaiah being big on order and following orders.

Indeed. The Ike Shrimpas was talking about sounds like Hero's Fallen Ike, not normal Ike. Ike is a Hero. He likes fighting, yes this is true. He's not about to start fights just for the sake of it.

  14. My favorite FE's on the shopping block, eh? Eh, sure, why not.

    1. Micaiah's Ok. A little Mary Sue-ish, but it fits wit her Lore/Character. Part 3 screws her over with the Plot-contract. RIP her in Part 4, but Yune's funny, I guess.
    2. Elincia's great. I wish she had more time in the spotlight.
    3. Ike's... Well, IDK, he's Ike. He develops as much as a block of wood in Radiant Dawn. And, yes, I think RD would've been better if Ike had only been a supporting character. Skimir's way more interesting. Why can't we have a Laguz Lord?

Binding blade has a ton of so called terrible units among its huge roster. Doing it on the highest difficulty will definitely prove to be a huge challenge.

As for specifics: The axe bros at the start are terrible (axes in general are really bad in this game). Barst is one of the worst armor knights in the series, And of course using your theif trio as combat units

Wendy, Garret, Bors, and Dorothy are also really bad.

Binding blade honestly has one of the most unbalanced rosters in the series.

You do know Radiant Dawn exists, right? You want unbalance, look no further.

RD is pretty tough to begin with, so only using the bad units may be more than a bit grueling, so it's not recommended. But if you want a challenge-mode of a run, then go for it. Assuming you can play RD, of course. Wii emulation is a pain from what I hear.

The Merlinus solution might actually be the best one. A solution may not be required, since players typically don't grind their dancers to level 20 anyway. I'll be making this in FEBuilder and I'm not sure how possible it would be to apply Merlinus leveling to the lord, but it's worth considering.

    ...

I was not planning on having them promote on account of dancers not typically promoting. Of course, I'm open to arguments that they should. Since I wasn't thinking of a combat dancer, the main benefit of promotion would be +1 movement. However, if your dancer starts with 6 move instead of 5, that wouldn't really be a problem. You could also have them learn Celerity at a certain level to compensate for the lack of promotion.

    ...

Interesting. I was assuming this dancer would not fight, but I was unaware there was so much popular support for the idea of a dancer having combat capabilities. Whether dancers should have weapons could be a whole thread in itself, but to keep this short, I think tomes would be the best weapon for them to have if you had to give them one. A sword would put them back in the weapon triangle, which I don't think we want. Staves are only used on player phase, where the dancer will mostly be dancing. However, I'm concerned that arming them distract from their main purpose and I wonder if keeping the dancer lord out of harms way would be a good challenge to present the player with.

The best I can think of would be to make them a Merlinus-Leveling Dance-lord that can (Maybe?)  promote after reaching Lv20. And the best compromise for the Fighting/No fighting for Dancers debate would be for them to get Combat access after promotion.

42 minutes ago, Shanty Pete's 1st Mate said:

Radical thought, and it might not fit with the styling of the game, but... maybe the promotion could be the Lord character literally sprouting wings? Now they have one extra move, and flying mobility. Although, it'd definitely demand a new dance/battle animation.

That's... an Angel, then? Or a Laguz-like protagonist? Any way you cut that, it's a bit out of place in FE, but we are talking about a Hack here, so... Sky's the limit, aye?

  17. 1 hour ago, Interdimensional Observer said:

Also, didn't Fates use this Dance formula or something? I don't remember, and SF never made a calculations page for Fates.

It does something like that. You gain ~17 EXP per dance bellow Lv5, and each level after that reduces it by a point or so. I think it bottoms out at about 5 EXP per dance, but don't quote me on that, seeing as it's been a while since I played Fates.

  18. Ah, nostalgia. What a wonderful, wicked thing it can be.

Is losing HMs that bad? In some ways yes, in others no. Are 8 HMs excessive? Very much so. Do they provide good ways to prevent exploration past what is allowed at that point? Yes, I'd say. Should they not be forgetable by normal means? Hell no! But this is neither here, nor there, is it?

In my humble opinion, HMs should be used for one-off game progressions and optional areas. Waterfall in Hoenn, for example. You only have to use it to get to Evergrande. Past that, it's used for many optional areas around the region (Meteor Falls springs to mind).

But the biggest problem I see isn't related to HMs at all. It's that Game Freak is either getting in a hurry to get the games out, or are just plain lazy. I'm not about to argue it either way, as I've little research into the topic and just don't care enough about the series anymore to try and make a good point. Pokemon is a series I have a lot of nostalgia for, but I feel it has lost it's way. Thus (despite this fairly lengthy post), I just don't care enough to debate the topic. This is simply my opinion, and I know most probably disagree with it.

  19. Currently sick and hurting. I've yet to gather the willpower to start back on this. I'll get to it, once I'm feeling better.
