I think there's also a difference between translating something non-literally and translating something poorly. Speaking as someone who is pseudo bilingual (I speak French, but not incredibly well), and having to deal with English to French or French to English translations a lot of the time, I find sometimes it just has to be done differently, ya know? But I guess you would know best, ha...

Well, usually you can kind of tell when a translation is decent. It's hard to explain, but you kind of can. Not with everything though, and not to a massive degree. The main point is that the ones I've played have actually BEEN good, so while they might have been translated incorrectly, they couldn't have been butchered that badly.

I've played/read translated VNs, and they're usually pretty good. They take waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer than manga or anime take though, but that's partially because most of them have fairly strict quality control.
