I wouldn't mind if Takamaru was in, but I do think people are looking into every little detail too much, basically saying it was evidence Takamaru was playable because of whatever it was with the Virtual Console. I for one find it cool that characters like him, Starfy, Issac and the like are assist trophies and hold the potential to appear playable later on.

Takamaru is from Nazo no Murasame Jō and is a Nintendo IP, hence why it exists in Nintendo Land. For the most part it is Japan exclusive, so not really known overseas.

Since its Nintendo's IP, they allowed him to appear in the game, only in the Wii version. It's like how Link appeared in Soul Calibur 2, only in the GC version.

Sad news for Takamaru fans, but at least he is getting represented in the game for the first time.

I was very in favor of him before we started getting information but the gradual reveal of so many single series miscellaneous characters gradually lowered my expectations of seeing him in. An assist trophy is great though. Maybe he'll make it to SSB5.

First, Smashbros-miiverse.com (a fansite) did a poll for the most popular veterans not yet confirmed.

Mewtwo being #1 is no surprise, but it's odd to see Snake in second place.

And here's a poll for veterans that people don't want to return.

It could be expected to return as opposed to want to return. People vote highly for wanting to Snake return while on the other pole people vote highly on Snake not returning because it's what they expect to happen, not what they actually want.

The same reason Chrom fans are upset that he's just an FS, or that Ridley fans are upset that he might be a stage hazard. People don't just want to see characters "in the game," they want to be able to play as them and see them kicking ass.

I still don't understand who is upset about Takamaru. I'm sure there's someone somewhere out there but I don't see anyone on this forum posting words of sorrow or rage and nobody else on any of the other Smash communities I'm involved with seem particularly moved by this reveal.
