True, but how exactly do you propose to change it?

I don't mean to sound pessimistic (though I am being), but it's highly unlikely that Intelligent Systems will listen to a handful of fans on an English fansite for their Fire Emblem series. If it ends it being in future games, it will probably not be because of this, and of their own accord. I've seen very few people complain about this outside of SF.

Well, Nintendo did at least release a statement about Tomodachi Life where they promised that if they made another game, they'd try to be more inclusive, but of course that was more than just a handful of fans on one website that triggered that. Still, Fire Emblem has gotten fairly popular, so if there's enough feedback by fans (not just on Serenes Forest) and perhaps even some media involvement, perhaps Nintendo will take notice.

I missed a lot in this topic.

Fire Emblem has come a long way. I remember being excited about the new gameplay mechanics in PoR and RD (mainly, ledges). I didn't care about who was with who or one way or the other.

I know romance isn't gonna go away, and neither are supports (although after wading through both sides of this salt pool I have never wanted them gone more), but I am deeply saddened how the focus has apparently changed on what is the most important thing in the series.

My idea is to get rid of marriage and conversation, but not support bonuses. Make them keep track of how many turns a unit has been next to another, and do a percent bonus based on that, for the top 1/2 units. This makes it seem like the combat bonuses are because they watched how their ally fought. And then, you can pretend the bonuses are there for whatever reason you want.

Gregor give Lon'qu sandwich, so he fight good, no?

is it safe to say now that every step FE takes to pleasing the otaku fan base, the further away the gay romance dream fades from existance?

forgive me for being blunt, but it feels like the two sides aren't even a part of the same coin, i'd rather not see the series go the otaku route, despite that i myself could fall under that.

could there be co-existance? well there's a chance for everything, no matter how small, unless its a fact.

will it happen soon? i don't think i can say it will.

There can be a coexistence, it has already happened, otaku won't care as long they get what they want(waifu).

Japan doesn't believe that seeing gay thing in media will "corrupt" you, gay relationship are okay as long as they are in a game/movie.

Gay relationship will just be seen has fanservise for girls who like it and lesbian's for guys.

besides with female kamui fire emblem is already share between 2 fanbases. yaoi fangirls are often also otome fan, the same with yuri fan and.....waifu(what...there is no name for that fanbase) fan, so to the eyes of the otaku it won't really change anything, they won't think " they are trying to cater to LGBT people" or anything like that.

It's a limited but it's a good start. I feel like once the child mechanic is gone from the games (they can't do it for too many more games...right?) there might be more options in the future.

I'm kinda glad Zero is one I thought he was pretty cool. As for not!Tharja..while I guess I'll be getting to know her better when I play.

Yah, still a long way to go, but this is better than nothing. Zero seems an alright choice, and I guess it makes sense for Not!Tharja to be available to women considering Tharja was clearly lusting after female Robin in Awakening, but I'm kind of surprised Silas isn't a gay option considering his whole backstory and connection to Corrin. But hey, baby steps.

Nope, so far it looks like just Zero and Shara.

Why only two character? Wtf. I wanted Aqua to be able for same-sex too.

No idea. It would be nice if there was at the very least one male same sex option and one female same sex option per route. Add Silas for men, Azura for ladies. That would still be pretty limited, but better than what we have now.

Oh well, better than nothing, and maybe DLC or something will add more.

Because each individual character has their own (implicit or explicit) sexual orientation.

It just so happens that Shara is the only lesbian or bisexual woman outside of a female Kamui in the group and the other women are hetero.

Its not exactly surprising, given real-life population statistics.

The inclusion of same-sex marriage in Fates is so incredibly important. If you're "against it," it's important to realize that, as a heterosexual, the world perpetually affirms your identity (with Fire Emblem being no exception). Straight people were the only ones who could completely customize their MU in Awakening; gay or lesbian gamers had to either abandon their gender identity (to marry a character of the sex they're attracted to) or their sexuality (to make an Avatar matching their gender identity). Even if it's a small victory this time, Nintendo's validation of same-sex marriages allows me and so many others to see representation and affirmation of ourselves by way of Fates' MU.

I am so happy about this.

When the children were leaked a few days ago I had lost all hope but I am really thankful to be pleasantly surprised right now!

Like others have said I would have loved male Kamui/Silas but I'll take male Kamui/Zero, sure.

As for Shara, it makes sense what with Tharja's feelings for female Robin in Awakening I guess, but personally I didn't care much for her as a character so I'm meh about this.

but really why couldn't it have been Silas ;_;

I think it's unnecessary and I won't be using the feature. that being said, I'm not against it.

My only gripe is that it will probably be forced. Hopefully that won't be the case, though. Fingers crossed.

Also, too many people have been bitching about how FE:FAtes is "pandering to animefags and pedophiles", but you won't hear anyone say that the game is pandering to the queer community.

But that's none of my business.

Pandering would be if Zero was the most annoying stereotypical gay guy ever. From what I can tell, he's not (he's voiced by DIO, of all guys).

Still nervous about the quality of writing, since Shara is an unknown in my mind. If she turns out to be Heather 2.0 in terms of her attitudes regarding men, I will be extremely disappointed.

Made a pastebin for the poor bastards that don't have ad block for some reason, don't give polygon the views.

Just for that, I clicked the article ten times (and my Adblock is disabled for Polygon).

From what I've heard, Shara has Tharja's personality to go along with her appearance. So, she's not a lesbian stereotype, but since a lot of people hated Tharja's personality I can see how people might get upset.

This. . .REALLY depends on how well they pulled off Shara. Tharja had a hell of a backstory, to the point where her actions made sense. If Shara doesn't get that kind of depth, that'll be sad. The "psychotic chick who likes chicks" isn't my favorite trope!

From what little I saw, Zero seems to be defined by his psychotic tendencies. Though I would've preferred someone more. . .erm, sane to be the choice, I'm somewhat relieved that the fact that he swings both ways isn't his defining character trait.

There is a trap character in this game that does it to pick up chicks and flirts super hard all the time with women. This is everything I could have wanted out of a character like this and I'm still laughing my ass off because of it.

Well played IS, well played
