Definitely over here those are tortas.

Ironically torta the cake and not torta the sandwich is how we got tortilla.

I see. I've never seen torta refer to anything other than cake so TIL.

The whole thread's gone into SE angery.

Meanwhile I'm this guy, only shouting about playing Neo TWEWY instead (This does include shouting at my failures).

But FC and SC have basically the same gameplay.

Yeah but FC has low numbers, which i dislike. Makes battles take too long imo. And when i fix that post to be right, it'll make more sense.

For you, yes. However, from a Final Fantasy fan's perspective, not necessarily. FFs 1-11 were made pre-merger, the rest of the mainline titles came after. Also pre-merger, you had all the good Mana games, Chrono Trigger, and the SaGa franchise for those of very niche tastes.

The 2003 merger with Enix can be taken as a turning point -for fans of certain opinions- the point where Square went from making good games to mostly churning out bad ones.

Hmmm true. Square did seem to have a bigger variety during their Squaresoft days.

I'd want to say the cost of game production was lower back in the day, so it was less costly to experiment. And small work teams were entirely viable, which you have in the case of indie titles, but not anything AAA nowadays.

Not to mention development times were usually shorter. Let's see year-by-year SquareSoft's direct output (meaning things they did more than just publish), focusing on important titles and ignoring the junk time has forgotten (and ignoring the porting old of titles).:

Spoiler
  • 1987- Final Fantasy I
  • 1988- Final Fantasy II
  • 1989- The Final Fantasy Legend (the first SaGa game- Makai Toushi SaGa in Japanese)
  • 1990-
    • Final Fantasy III
    • Final Fantasy Legend II
  • 1991-
    • Final Fantasy Adventure (the first Mana game)
    • Final Fantasy IV (including a separate release of the EasyType version)
    • Final Fantasy Legend III
  • 1992-
    • Romancing SaGa
    • Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
    • Final Fantasy V
  • 1993-
    • Secret of Mana
    • Romancing SaGa 2
  • 1994-
    • Final Fantasy VI (Delayed according to hearsay for a year just to fine tune the music.)
    • Live A Live
  • 1995-
    • Chrono Trigger
    • Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana
    • Secret of Evermore
    • Romancing SaGa 3
  • 1996-
    • Radical Dreamers (a visual novel that is related to then-not-yet-developed Chrono Cross)
    • Bahamut Lagoon
    • Super Mario RPG
    • Treasure of the Rudras
  • 1997-
    • Final Fantasy VII
    • Final Fantasy Tactics
    • SaGa Frontier
    • Front Mission 2
    • A Chocobo Mystery Dungeon game
    • And a well-praised 2D shoot 'em up called Einhander? Why Square?
  • 1998-
    • Some mostly meh AlienCog.
    • Parasite Eve
    • Brave Fencer Musashi
  • 1999-
    • Final Fantasy VIII
    • SaGa Frontier 2
    • Legend of Mana
    • Front Mission 3
    • Threads of Fate
    • Chrono Cross
    • Parasite Eve 2
  • 2000-
    • Vagrant Story
    • Final Fantasy IX
  • 2001- Final Fantasy X
  • 2002-
    • Kingdom Hearts
    • Final Fantasy XI
    • Unlimited SaGa
  • 2003-
    • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
    • Final Fantasy X-2

I spoilered this mostly b/c length. I don't expect you to actually do more than glimpse at it, I did this mostly out of my own curiosity.

It's clear the pace of Square "classics" slowed at 2000 and onwards. But otherwise, you can't say this isn't a fairly good rate of in-house game production for a company that took needed some time to become the AAA giant it is today. 1999 was the peak year, although Threads of Fate is 7/10 material I read, Frontier 2 is narratively unfinished, and Chrono Cross is a mixed bag, but still impressive. And a new Square game -90% of the time an RPG- releasing every six months or less on average can't not have endeared the company to people.

I don't trust it. Sure Tifa is holding it, but nope, must have Jenova cells in it and is keeping tabs on Cloud for Sephy.

More like, "Masato Kato wasn't satisfied with RD so he decided it should get a remake as a proper game rather than a VN, but then decided to add a bunch of other stuff to the point the actual RD-inspired content is only like 15% of what Cross ended up being and thanks to timey wimey shenanigans RD is still canon, just taking place in a different universe".

Anyway, looking at the list, there's something amusing to see Squaresoft thought it'd help sales outside Japan if both the first SaGa trilogy games and the first Mana game were also called Final Fantasy "Something".
