The Last promise another take on the portraits of units

Hi everyone, so i’m working on a patch to recreate The Last Promise Character but with better graphics and animations don’t hesitate if you have any question. I’m trying to respect the art of TLP just to update it cos it is a bit old.

I just wanted for the game to have a feel fresh feeling not by reworking the existing portaits but by making my own portraits since we have a lot of new tools today. Not sure if it is a good idea, i’ve juste been creating sprites on my own and a friend told me that it would be nice to have a fresh TLP. And of course trying to create those portraits by respecting what has been done by the former spriters.

I've asked for Blazer permission but don't think he will reply. 

I'll leave you with Anakin, Shon and Kelik.

 

Can't post twice a day so i followed some of your suggestions let me know what you think and i give you some of the next ones.

Aw, so sad. But I guess it's time to move on with the times.

I, certified non-expert, think they look fine, though it's kinda weird that Kelik's hair is so light. I'd probably keep its darker color.

I hereby summon @Saint Rubenio, certified TLP expert.

If you continue with this, are you considering adding any QoL improvements to the hack?

Holy Cannoli. Didnt think I'd be seeing more TLP dedication here. Cool. 

That said, I do like the base designs when it came to the portraits of the lords in the og version. Anakin's deadpan expression was unique, and ironic given how he was a moral supporter that seemed like he didn't care about anything, but he clearly did. He was an oddball, but rather than making him look goofy or quirky, I felt that it made him more human. Also its hilarious seeing Anakin's portrait when he says his iconic line "Bah, you're such an ass Kelik...I hope you never change". Technically, I do see the bag under his eyes on the remodel, which I appreciate, but its subtle-ness combined with his relatively normal hairstyle separates him a bit too far apart from his og design and the lack of self care/professionalism he seems to have for himself in the attempt to save others, as well as the general weirdness coming off of the vibe of the whole protag squad trying to befriend one another as they journey along. Just my thought though.

Kelik's redesign is well done, although he really is partially defined by the black hair, so I agree with Anon on that. Whether you think highly or low of him, its hard to deny that he's an edgelord, one who somehow made his way to protagonist status and has to deal with Magnus and the brash actions of Siegfried with what little professionalism and kindness he's got. Besides, the black probably carries the weight he handles.

Shon is the most well polished sprite that easily fits his character. Certainly seems like it took inspiration from Franz, although I'd like to believe Franz is better than to not participate in the final map...

He's always been the soft man who attempts to steer his father onto a more just path whenever Siegfried goes on a rant over wanting to kill every last Magnian, almost leaving a town attacked by bandits to die simply because they didn't believe him over the threats they possessed. That said, I do wish Shon mattered more in the story by the end, but this is more on his character usage than your redesign, which i believe works well. 

If you continue with other TLP characters, I'd be interested in seeing those, and I'll also chime in with my own suggestions if you are planning add other small QoL changes to the game.

This is pretty neat! Best of luck with your project. On the portraits...

Shon is rather similar, but his expression is more innocent, which suits him well. I like it. Only thing is, it kinda looks like he's missing one of his eyebrows.

Kelik is good. He looks every bit as tryhard as he should. Even somewhat hotheaded, which fits him. Only problems are his hair is too light and you forgot the famous necklace. It's plot important, so it should definitely be there on his portrait.

Anakin... Eh. I'd say that one needs some tweaks. His head is fine, the expression suits him and so does the subtly messy hairdo. But the coloring on his robes is wonky and the yellow thing looks a bit strange. His OG robes also had a lot more going on, with the little chain and ornate robes. Which... Doesn't really fit someone who starts as a vagrant, but I digress.

Still, good work on these! I'd also be interested in seeing more.

Holy based, Gary became a gigachad. I love it.

Corben's ponytail is always something I forget about, mostly because it's barely visible. Guess he cut most of it off here, probably to look cool with his fight with Shon after he randomly decided to solo the prologue for no reason. Its a decent contrast to Shon's baby face, even of the two hardly interact past the first 2 chapters. I like it. Its got more personality imo.

Ben has the largest contrast. Instead of smiling, he's lot more stone faced, which arguably reflects his strategic side. He is more of a serious loyal knight to my knowledge, at least with Leopold. Personally, I have some fondness for the old design, but I dont see anything wrong with the new one. @Saint Rubenio help me here. You look like a Ben guy, and you love stone face boiz. I used him once.

All in all, I really like these redesigns overall. Gary in particular gives me Galzus vibes.

So for Kelik i followed your advices, anakin is the problem i'm testing various styles but finding it hard to make proper.

Shon got his second eyebrow.

Corben is design to reflect the other side of the young squire so nice that you appreciate it.

I'm a ben guy and always thought that he was suppose to be more serious and less young.

Gary fits his description i think.

And @AnonymousSpeed I don't know for now but would like to add a few cutscenes to introduce the senat.

I'm really digging the Levion one. Not to offend whoever drew his old version, but his face was always...odd? Maybe there was a reason for it, but this suits him far better methinks. Also I like Douglas, which this seems to be inspired from. Being the guy thats sent on dangerous missions often for Kelik, usually alone, it makes sense for him to have a more Jagen-like presence, aka a rougher facial structure, and the Douglas face does tell more of a story like, "he's fought many battles and will die for what he believes in". In this case, its mainly to repay Kelik.

Tekun, funny myrm man with over 30 speed. I love his old design in a hilariously ironic sense, but this one is much more professional. Tekun, while clearly a vengeful person, isn't reckless or bloodthirsty. Hes simply extremely serious and almost desperate not to lose to an opponent, although he rarely ever has. He can be a bit violent as far as his manner of speech goes, but I reckon the scar adds to his intimidation and battle memories, which is now extended from a bit of his nose. I suppose the new sprite could be a little angrier or something that makes him seem more difficult to approach. Other than that, seems decent.

Sorry, I dont know what essai is. Anyways, I'm gonna hide the next bit just in case.

This seems like a combination of regular Siegfried and Orson the necrophile. Its like what Siegfried would look like in endgame in the original if he was actually possess instead of just having a freaky sword hand.. I'm glad its largely the same, since I liked Siegfried's sprite the most of the 3 to 4 lords. I approve of him looking more serious, since he spends quite a bit of time being bitter about Magnus, almost ignoring everything around him just to kill Magnians, and he's of course still lost in thought reliving the memories of his wife dying. Again, I feel that Shon is a counterpart to what justice and kindness Siegfried may have had back then, and is his main link to staying on the path of not becoming joker pilled.

I'm not pink or anonymous, but assuming you're referring to the 4 senators of Magnus in chapter 28, go for it. They really needed more of a presence. Hard to care about them with how late they show up.

Okay so in later years I've taken to only occasionally looking in at what's going on, but when I saw your interpretation of Lyam I had to break my silence and say that I actually made his first sprite off of the Beta version of Kyle from FE8 so your use of the final version as your base is ironic and fun.

Overall your splicing skills aren't bad, but are very simple. You should try being experimental and doing more custom work. One of the mistakes I made in the beginning was relying on splices and by the time I got comfortable doing full customs I was ready to get out of the game and move on with life. Over-relying on the same parts also bit me in the ass because for awhile angle and expressions in my sprites looked very similar and I took a lot of heckling for it.

Your color palettes should match in saturation and contrast, I think. Several of them are too light in the hair and armor and kinda fade together to look flat. Your outline should always be your darkest color too, but don't get too crazy using it inside of the image. 

I apologize if anything sounds harsh or blunt. It's just I've been there and I don't want anyone repeating my mistakes.

Not harsh at all don't worry, so after a month i've finished according to my standards the rework of most of the cast i'm going to post it aside from the original work so you can tell me what to modify or what you find querky etc...  And i would like to thanks the repo from FEU because i used it a lot to work.
