Character opinions that have changed

I prepared myself to hate Nina, but she's a pretty nice character disregarding her yaoi obsession. It helps that other characters like Shiro react to it in a natural way.

Setsuna's also funnier than I expected.

Her Corrin obsession gives me a snorin' obsession.

OH SNAP!

I seem to notice a recurring theme. I don't like characters that are poor parents. I find nothing more attractive than a character that is a good father. That's one reason I decided to marry Kaze in Revelations.

Fathers of the year go to Laslow and Azama. I'm not joking.

Anyway. . .I thought Azura was trying too hard, appearance-wise in the pre-release materials. Now. . .I don't care for her at all. The game's trying too hard to push her as something special, which gets a giant "meh" from me. Come at me fanboys :P:

I had mixed feelings about Hinata, and thought that Hisame was adopted or something. After getting through supports from both of them, I'm okay with Hinata (despite his supposed lack of hygiene), and am highly amused by Hisame.

Peri. I still don't like her but, when paired with certain people, I can tolerate her. Laslow, Odin and Hinata are the only characters I can comfortably pair her with and not regret having done so. Laslow and Odin are the only supports that I have done as of now that she makes an active effort in changing her ways and learning to move on from her past. There are probably more but I have not gotten to them yet. Hinata is there because, while not character developing at all, I found their support cute.

I went into the game thinking Felicia is one of those unit i'd use for first Pt and ignore for the rest

Currently i just can't do a single playthrough without marrying Felicia/Jakob because theyre a really fun character to use

Leo seems the meh-est of meh character before i played the game. Now he's my favorite Royals. The same can kinda be said for Elise i guess

During the JP only phase everyone made Rinkah out to be the literal worst as a unit. Now, being my favorite girl, I was fully prepared to dump all of birthright's resources to make her good. I was willing to go against my principles and save her HP+5/Axefaire to buy for posterity if she was really as bad as people say.

Turns out, it's grossly exaggerated. She took only a little bit of resources to get rolling and ended up pretty awesome. I would use her every run. I even have plans to branch out of my favorite Berserker build now because I did Berserker like 3 times now.

Now I champion for "Rinkah isn't as shit of a unit as people make her out to be".

I used to loath Orochi, but after playing Birthright and Revelations for a while, beside being a "Capture" skill- unit, I got used to her, and now I think she is cool.

Rinkah is one of my best units in Revelation. I dont see how people say she sucks, she does just fine as far as I know. She is probably one of the better units to use in the beginning of Revelation because she isnt that underleved, and is still useful in the level you obtain her, unlike Hana who cant do any damage and gets hit all the time, even against 11% chances.

tbh she's so integral to my team at this point I'd be like "how the hell do i do this part" if I didn't use her.

My playstyle takes full advantage of her physical bulk and later point-and-click deletion abilities.

I didn't think she was bad. Her hit was shoddy at first, but everything else was alright, and then she was... Solid.

Elise is another one for me, at first I thought she would be an annoying little kid, but I find her supports charming and I like how she's always trying to find a peaceful solution and keep hope alive. She may be too naive but I could see her growing into a good leader. Plus she's a killer unit because staves are crucial in Conquest.

As far as characters I grew to like:

Jakob - Honestly I was originally planning on marrying Silas in my first BR play through but I ended up caving to the master servant relationship like I always do and I don't regret any of it. It helps that I like him as a character.

Arthur - All I had seen of him before playing conquest was his character portrait and for whatever reason I hated how he looked, and was pretty dead set that I wouldn't like him. Granted, I had no idea what his personality was like. When I finally got around to playing conquest he ended up being one of my favorite characters personality wise. It's too bad I had to bench him because of trust issues.

All the Nohrian royals - I just kinda felt like I would hate them because I seen them as the douchebags that stole me from my "real family", but again, once I played Conquest, I grew to like them a lot as all their personalities really came to life and made me genuinely feel like I grew up my whole life with these guys as my siblings.

Takumi - His bow is stupidly good and his crit quotes are music to my ears. That and Conquest.

Unpopular opinions inbound, characters I started to dislike:

Almost everyone from Hoshido - It's not that their bad characters or anything, I just found them all really bland and boring. None of them stuck out to me like the Conquest characters did. ESPECIALLY the Hoshidan royals besides Tacomeme, holy cow were they boring and uninteresting. Ryouma was nothing but "i'm a good guy that does good things" at the very least he was a badass unit. Hinoka was tomboy to the max, and Sakura was doormat/wallflower the character. And none of them really ever changed in my eyes. They got a little more interesting on Conquest but still just...bland. And it's sad because pre-release I really liked them and were the main reason I chose Birthright first.

Felicia - I don't understand her appeal. Her voice is a bit grating and she's just a klutzy maid.

Azura - Ohhh Azura, I thought I would like you, but you ended up being another quiet, introverted, borderline marry sue that has like...1 or 2 cool scenes but in the end is just there to be the one that knows everything but can't say anything because "you need to buy the last story". She also shoves "Lost in Thoughts, All Alone" down your throat in Birthright which is a good song, but it gets really tiresome to hear after a while. Not a bad character and I can understand why people like her, she has a nice design and her voice, while she's too quiet, is still a good voice, but at the same time she just kinda irks me.

I didn't really care for any of the royals before release aside from liking Xander's design. I dunno none of them really stood out to me.

Turns out Leo is like, the best, most consistently good character in the game.

Oh yeah. I forgot to add Takumi to my list.

At first, I was neutral about him. Even after the game came out, I was still rather neutral about him, with a hint of irritation because of Conquest. Every time he showed up, I blew out a sigh and looked to the ceiling, murmuring, "Can you please shut the hell up, Takumi? I know you got beef. Let's get this over with."

During BR, I felt for him--but that was only until after reading his support with Kiragi. That is when the bond between us was formed.

If there is a choice between Leo and Takumi, I'm gonna choose Leo with no hesitation. And, every time I play Conquest, I am most definitely going to tell you to shut the hell up and skip your dialogue and cutscenes.

But you are not forgotten, Takumi. You will never be forgotten.

Pre-release:
Takumi - before the japanese release, I was pretty indifferent to him. Now he is my favorite royal sibling. I mean, how could you possibly hate the guy?
[spoiler=A picture, plus minor Birthright spoilers]
41d.jpg
He is also the only sibling who is smart enough to distrust Corrin and rightfully angry at their betrayal. But once he starts trusting you, he can be really caring. In the Japanese version he is also really enraged when Garon kills Zola in Birthright, which shows how protective he is of the people he cares about. He also acknowledges his flaws and wants to change himself.

Oboro - before the japanese release, the website descriptions made her sound like Cordelia 2.0 with Racism included. She's my favorite female character in the game now.
Charlotte - before the japanese release, the website descriptions made her sound like a bitch who cares only about herself. She is now my favorite 1st gen Nohrian female character.
Camilla - She's everything I hoped she would NOT be. She's even worse than Tharja.
Selena - When I first saw her, my first thoughts were "Oh God, not this bitch again". She is pretty well written... in the Japanese version only. She is still a bitch in the localization.
Shigure - At first I thought he was pretty bland, but now I like him because of his role in Recollection of Bubbles.
Characters whom I changed my opinion about after playing the game/seeing the story in youtube videos/reading the supports:
Hinoka - I don't like her. At all. In Birthright she only shows up to threaten Zola. In Conquest she doesn't have a problem with Corrin murdering her brothers and countless Hoshidans in cold blood (But then again, everyone is fine with Ryoma and Takumi dying). And her supports with Saizo, she tries to entrap him
[spoiler=Entrapment according to criminal law, according to wikipedia]
In criminal law, entrapment is a practice whereby a law enforcement agent induces a person to commit a criminal offense that the person would have otherwise been unlikely to commit.[1] It is a conduct that is generally discouraged and thus, in many jurisdictions, is a possible defense against criminal liability.
-Wikipedia

Leo - He used to be one of my favorite characters in the game... until I saw Forrest's paralogue. Now he's one of my least favorites.

Silas - At first he was just incredibly bland, but now I see that he can be surprisingly judgemental in his supports. Like in his support with Orochi, when she warns him that something terrible could happen in the next battle and he spits on her prediction, even though she was only trying to help.

Elise - At first I was indifferent to her. Then I was annoyed at her because of how immature she is. Now she is my Third Favorite Royal Sibling (And my Favorite Nohrian Sibling) because of her role in Birthright and how she is the only one who realizes that there's something wrong with Garon. (Edit: Forgot to mention her role in Forrest's paralogue. Elise is the best aunt ever.

Gunter - I was pretty indifferent to him at first. His Conquest supports with Corrin shows that he was a father-figure for them back in the fortress (Which kinda makes the games' writing even worse since Corrin doesn't even mourn his 'death' in Chapter 3). I started to like him even more after Revelation

Since he has an actual reason for helping Nohr. He is just waiting for the right moment to get his revenge.

Being voiced by D.C. Douglas definetly helps.

Kaze - WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU JOIN NOHR?!

Izana - At first I thought he was a little amusing (but not much), but now he is annoying and breaks immersion. I can't take him seriously. If I wasn't in Casual, I'd probably kill him on purpose.

Percy - At first I liked that he was kinda like a sidekick for his father, bringing justice everywhere he goes, but then he tried to get his dad fucking killed.

Corrin - At first he was pretty good since he defended Kaze and Rinka, but he doesn't get rid of Ganglari after it tried to throw him into the Bottomless Canyon, and it causes Mikoto's death. Him siding with Nohr definetly makes it worse. A lot worse.

Lilith - Why must you sink my ship IntSys? Her death in Birthright and Conquest is really random. Not to mention she has no reason to save Corrin in chapter 3. He was going to survive going to Valla. She could just escort him back to the surface later. She is strong enough to do so, as shown in Hidden Truths.

Awakening characters:

As I said before, JP!Selena is pretty well written.

JP!Rhajat is more socially awkward than creepy. She is much better written than NA!Rhajat and and Tharja.

Caeldori actually is shown how and why she became so hard-working and "perfect", unlike Cordelia.

Asugi and Laslow seem to be a little more mature than their Awakening selves, but I'm not sure what gives me that impression.

Characters that I dislike for their role in the plot, but I still like them enough and are excused because the plot is shit anyways.

Arthur, Laslow, Odin and Selena are too eager to invade an innocent nation that was only trying to live in peace.

Laslow has no problem killing Selena in Revelations.

Takumi, Ryoma and Mikoto forgiving Corrin at the end of Conquest

Edit: Forgot to include Localization changes

Selena and Rhajat are much worse.

Niles is better.

I dismissed Saizo as just the boring stereotypical ninja at first, but after reading his supports I think he's one of the better character in the game, instead of being just alright.

My opinion changed negatively on Keaton and Velouria. I really liked their designs and I thought I would like them as characters as well, but I did't think their obsession with garbage was either funny or intersting and those are the aspects of their character that seem to come up a lot.

I didn't like Takumi, and I still don't. He's a whiny angsty teen, he's also got an unhealthy competitive relationship with his son. I do love Kiragi, though.

I seem to notice a recurring theme. I don't like characters that are poor parents.

Given that the characters become parents of teenagers within a matter of weeks, which must be so incredibly jarring, I find Takumi/Kiragi's father/son supports to be one of the most realistic in the game. Takumi ends up apologizing very nicely by the end, anyway, which is the important part - actually, Takumi's ability to accept his faults and apologize sincerely (which he does in numerous supports - Azura's and Corrin's too, for example) - is one of his best strengths.

Silas - ditto to others here; I married him quickly on my first play through, then did his supports and found he's a mixture of boring, faux-nice-guy and a bit of a jerk. Bleh.

Jakob - I initially liked him, then did a few of his supports and hated him, then did even more of his supports and now I appreciate him again. He is at least amusing and he's mostly short with people he doesn't really care to get to know.

Hinata - at first he seemed a bit of a bland jock-type, but he's actually pretty great! He's a lovable doofus and he is genuinely nice and helpful in several of his supports, unlike self-professed-best-man Silas.

Elise - again, same reasons as others have stated. Actually, ditto to Charlotte and Shigure, too.

Subaki - I had to groan at another perfectionist-type character and his portrait is so SMUG-looking, but he has a decent amount of depth to his character and his supports reveal his weaknesses, rounding him out a little.

Ryoma - I was all prepared to like him, but several of his supports really irritate me and his motivations towards Corrin are weird. I feel like the best thing going for him is Shiro.

My opinion of others has largely remained the same - not even Laslow's supports endear me towards Peri, for example. I still find Arthur and Effie a little too gimmicky even after doing all their supports. And I played Birthright first, so I never disliked Takumi - he was a firm favorite almost from the start.

Camilla - She still isn't my favorite, but I ended up liking her more then a few other Royals.

Ryoma - Same as Camilla.

Hinoka - my god how can you be so boring

Xander - my god how can you be so stupid

Nina - The yaoiness reminded me of my cringe days back when I was a yaoi fangirl, but the supports I did had her mostly being chill. (A good one is with Kana.)

She is probably one of the better units to use in the beginning of Revelation because she isnt that underleved, and is still useful in the level you obtain her, unlike Hana who cant do any damage and gets hit all the time, even against 11% chances.

That's drastically different for me. My Hana almost never gets hit at all and Rinkah misses hits at 87%. Rinkah's growths don't help me either. I guess that explains why I still don't like her and why she is nothing more than cannon fodder to me. Hopefully the RNG blesses me with a decent Rinkah.

Charlotte - Her whole reason for wanting money was better than what I initially thought.

Kagero - I thought I'd be indifferent for her, but now I love her so much.

Benny - Didn't know too much about him and I thought he'd be a cruel guy, but he's actually a sweetheart.

Odin - I liked Owain, but he just comes off as annoying in fates to me.

Niles - I was indifferent to him due to his past, but he's like Laslow, a flirt. The perverted stuff doesn't make him endearing imo.

Izana - Just based on design I thought he's be graceful and elegant, but he becomes really damn annoying.

Keep in mind that I've played the Japanese version and read through all the translations and spoilers, so most of these opinion shifts came long before the English release.

Hoshido

Sakura: I thought I was going to be neutral on her, but she's my second favorite Hoshido sibling and either second or third favorite royal overall.

Hinoka: I wanted to like her, but now I fucking hate her guts.

Hana: Thought I was going to like her, now I kind of dislike her.

Azama: I blame Baldrick for this one. I "liked" him until I found out what his character is like. Now he's just ;/

Orochi: Had no opinion of her. Read a couple of her supports and strongly disliked her.

Nohr

Elise: Thought I'd be neutral on her, but after thinking on it for a while I don't really like her very much. I don't hate her, though.

Marx: Not sure if my opinion has changed substantially on him, but I dislike him the more I think about his actions in Conquest.

Charlotte: At first she seemed like an unpleasant type of character, but I actually like her now.

Zero: I was merely neutral on him. But I eventually ended up disliking him.

Don't remember the children very well, but I like Hisame and Shigure, don't have an issue with Shiro, and don't really like the rest.

(I actually liked Takumi to begin with, unlike most people here.)

Let's see...

Positive

Takumi is the big one for me. I thought I was going to completely hate him, and now he's my favorite character in Fates.

Caeldori is another one. I generally like Cordelia minus the obsession with Chrom, and that's to some extent what we got with Caeldori. She also has some really nice supports with the other kids.

Gunter. I initially thought he'd be just another Jeigan, but his supports with Corrin and his role in Revelation really warmed me up to him

Arthur. I thought he was going to be one-note and nothing special but I came to really like him as I did more of his supports.

Camilla is a mixed case. I thought I was going to hate her because she would be nothing but "CORRIN CORRIN CORRIN", but some of her supports are actually very sweet. She may still be obsessed with Corrin, but she does have some depth to her that saves her in my eyes.

Hayato. I actually found him way more likable than Ricken once I got a bunch of his supports, since at least unlike Ricken he's already treated like an adult in the Wind Tribe and thus has a reason to be annoyed with how people treat him. It help's that Ben Diskin's kid voice doesn't make all of his complaining sound 1000x whinier like Yuri Lowenthal's kid voice did for Ricken.

Negative

Silas. I really thought he'd be a cool bro and I could at least be indifferent to him, but his awful supports combined with his almost Camilla-level obsession with Corrin quickly soured me on him.

Azama I thought I was going to like because I like snarky characters when they're done well, but nope, He's just an asshole.

Jakob for similar reasons. It doesn't help that at times he feels like Frederick except without all the things that made Freddy Bear likable and interesting.

Xander. I was initially indifferent to him during pre-release, but after playing the game I can say with all honesty that he's the character I hate most in Fates.

Jakob: I thought he was gonna be like the top-panel, but I absolutely despise what we got instead

333dd5cd3902c5b0e735134a65a6b08b.jpg

Azama: I thought he was gonna be funny in a sarcastic, deadpan snarker way. Instead we got a douche who deliberately antagonises people for fun. Pass.

Disliking Leo for how he acted at the beginning of Forrest's paralogue is pretty petty. He's not perfect. He didn't have a good initial reaction to Forrest's hobbies. However, by the end of that same paralogue, he apologizes for his behavior, wanting to make up for his past judgments.

Takumi is still on my least-liked top five, as well as Hinata, but they both had some nice supports.

I didn't like Oboro, but she quickly grew on me.

I love Silas, but maybe I'm just blind because of that :p his supports are boring though.

Ryoma seemed cool but he was boring as well. Duty duty duty duty. At least Xander is attractive, and the Nohr siblings did stuff behind Garon's back to defy him, so there's a little backstory there.

Niles. I like him, except the hair. When he was first announced in Japan, I didn't like him, but once I played the English, I felt some similarities with him.

Dislike most of the children. Caeldori. Shiro, Forrest, Siegbert, Kiragi, and Midori are the only ones I like.

I thought I find Arthur annoying but after getting the game I ended up liking him. He's just an endearing guy who never lets his bad luck get in the way of helping others

Niles is a character who I thought would be an edgelord but he turned out to be a lot more likable and well rounded character

On the flipside Hana was the character I was most hyped for but ended up despising. All the supports I've seen from her have her acting so irritable towards her support partner
