  1. Just to be clear, is a CG of a pretty girl on a sunny day with nice music the extent of your best evidence?

You've lost your right to insult my literary capabilities if you can't understand why context is important. I'll elaborate without insults. You must realize that this is the first image the player is given of Emmeryn. First impressions are very important. While you aren't suppose to blindly judge a book by its cover, Awakening's characters are like books that are defined by their covers, Emm not being an exception to this rule. Anyway, here's the script (credits to Serenes Forest).

    Old Villager

Look! The exalt has come to see us!

    >Emmeryn CG

    Robin

The exalt is your ruler, yes?

    Frederick

Yes. Her name is Lady Emmeryn.

    Robin

Is it safe for her to walk among commoners like this?

    Frederick

The exalt is a symbol of peace—Ylisse's most prized quality. Long ago, at the dawn of our age, the fell dragon tried to destroy the world. But the first exalt joined forces with the divine dragon and laid the beast low. Exalt Emmeryn reminds us all of the peace we fought for then.

    Chrom

With Plegia poking at our borders, the people need her. She's a calming presence, when some might otherwise call for war.

    Robin

Then the Ylissean people are indeed lucky to have her.

    Lissa

She's also the best big sister anyone could ask for!

The game gives the viewer a very strong first impression of Emmeryn with this scene. It laid out the base framework of Emmeryn's character. Considering our only source of reliability is the good hearted people who found our Avatar laying in the ground (and it stays this way until the end of the game), the game already makes it safe to assume that you can trust them. Given that our first enemies were plegian bandits, Chrom's suggestion of "Plegians bad, Ylisse good" is properly substantiated, which adds credibility to his claims about Emmeryn without sibling bias. This scene combines both dialogue from our only trustworthy source (along with the joy of the old man) and a visual cue to present the idea that Emmeryn is a paragon of peace. As Czar_Yoshi states, the game's lack of a narrator which provides extra background information (such as the possibility that not everyone was content with Emmeryn's methods) means that interpretation of Awakening's dialogue is fairly linear (hence the "non existent narrative" remark). Morality is incredibly black and white in this game (even Plegia/Gangrel, who had a bit of grey to their morality is still painted as a very, very dark gray). I think it's pretty safe to say that Awakening didn't expect much from its viewer. This is why I really urge you to substantiate the rather tough claim that Awakening was actually trying to show you how much of a terrible ruler she was if you read in between the lines when the game seems to blatantly do the opposite at every given opportunity, especially since the rest of the plot is not nearly so clever. For you to propose this incredulous view point, and then be the only one who supports it, you've placed the burden of proof upon yourself.

  2. In other words, you mean Chrom, Lissa, and Frederick giving unbiased background to an amnesiac who wouldn't know any better. I don't know about anyone else, but when I really want to get the pulse on someone, I ask their younger siblings and the f'n butler.

You'd have a point, except the game uses a visual cue to present the idea to the viewer that Emm is flawless.

Namely, this one (from the same scene in question)

    emelina0.png

For cryin' out loud the freaking sun is shining on her. This picture, accompanied by Chrom's praise gives the viewer a strong first impression.

This isn't true unless the game ejects the cartridge every time you get to the end of Chapter 7, which is a "yell at the movie screen" moment if there ever was one.

Lol, re-watch the scene. The music accompanying Emm's decision to return to the capital implies that the viewer was to feel sympathetic for her oh so selfless decision. The game did not try to show you how stupid her decision was. Rather, it glorified her choice. You've really got to provide some evidence that Awakening is clever enough to subtly present Emmeryn's flaws to the viewer when the rest of the story is a clusterfuck.

  3. Those pairs are mostly good, but maybe swap Gregor for Libra?

Gregor still gives Brady Astra access for Astra/Luna proc stack so I think it's fine. There's a 2 Mag difference between Gregor and Libra for Brady so Brady isn't missing much. Unless I'm missing something here?

  4. You are being too general, here, when you say that "the game [is telling me] that she's literally perfect". Who says that? In what context? Because the game is also telling you that she's a naive dumbass, just by virtue of showing you what her decisions wrought.

When you first see her in town. Chapter 2, I believe? She's glorified as the perfect symbol of peace. The way her leaping off of a cliff suddenly changed the hearts of many kind of glorifies her decision as well. At the drop of a hat, everyone was super upset that she died.

The game was not interested in letting you see how much of a dumbass she was, the game instead tried to make you feel sad that someone as perfect as Emm "took the fall", so to speak, for the sake of Plegia and Ylisse. The presentation of Chapter 10 further supports this. I think you're giving Awakening's (non-existent) narrative more credit than it deserves. The game is not so clever that it attempts to subtly show you Emm's faults. That's a hard claim to make given how much of a clusterfuck the rest of the story is.

  5. Gaius would be better on Kjelle than Nah. If you don't want to put Gaius on Kjelle, go with Vaike.

How do you do one of those fancy pairing charts? I need to make one myself.

I see you have Ricken!Inigo. Niiiice. Really underrated Inigo. That's pretty much it.

  6. Nobody's mentioned Counter yet, but I'm 99% sure Lucina used it in the trailer (right after Marth and Ike appeared) and her stance looks exactly like Marth's.

I think it was brought up in the Smash thread. I'm still surprised they couldn't even be bothered to give her own stance to her.

  7. re: bringing her back i always saw those dlc missions as, you know, postgame non-canon stuff. like creature campaign. so that people can recruit people that died in the game just to have in their army.

    not some hokey retconning bullshit

    but ok

Is Priam canon? I think he is, I'm not sure though. If Priam's canon, I'm sure the other spotpass paralogues are too.

  8. Even if she has the same moves, if she's faster where Marth is more powerful, then it's not exactly the same thing

But she has her own moves to draw from. There's no reason for her to be based entirely around Marth at all. Lucy is her own character, she should have gotten her own moves.

I would understand if she got a few moves from Marth since she was basically advertised as Rule 63 Marth but even down to the stance/idle animation? Lucina has her own stance.

  9. I so have to disagree about that. At least on a fundamental level. Because there is so much potential in brining her back.

Like, she was a big influence on Chrom and he was very troubled about living up to her example. Seeing her react to the things he accomplished could more then make up for the idiotic circumstances that would be required to cause such an opportunity.

Of course she only supports with the Avatar, so all that potential goes to waste. She is not even the same person anymore, what with having no memories and all.

But what was the point of killing off miss purity of pureness if she was just going to come back? Is Awakening that scared of killing people? Bringing her back was simply not a good move.

I won't say she's all bad. She must have done a lot of things right to make the country love her after their dickish dad almost drove Ylisse into the ground. But hey, that would actually require exposition and we all know Awakening hates exposition.

  10. Not to mention I doubt you could make her moveset different from Marth's anyway. I mean, come on. Lucina and Marth had the exact same animation AND costumes for their classes in Awakening. I hardly see a reason as to how she could have her own movepool (custom movesets are only a fantasy at this point. If they haven't done it now, it won't ever reach the surface).

Marth's moveset came from his own/SNES animations. Lucina has her own animations they can draw from. Marth existed before Awakening, lol.

  11. You seriously think they'd just burn all that money developing Chrom to toss him just because he was leaked, when 8 other characters were leaked and yet still confirmed? That's just ridiculous.

It's just a theory. Lucina being a clone seems like a rush job, and the delay had no clear explanation.

  12. I dunno... Valm conquered a massive continent in like 2 years, from a country the size of a small city. That's impressive

Yeesh, I wish Awakening did a better job of building its world. Valm kind of just... happened.

I haven't played enough FE to give a credible opinion but I think Granvale in FE4 made for a pretty good enemy.

  13. Considering Robin is in as the unique newcomer, the way I see it, if Lucina hadn't made it, either no one else would have taken her spot, or someone else would have but also as a clone. I don't think she took the spot of someone who would have been "more unique," so I'm just happy she's in even though I would prefer for her to be unique.

If they already had the newcomer, Lucina really shouldn't have been in at all as a clone or should have just been Marth's costume. Robin is perfectly fine for representation. If they weren't going to put effort into Lucy's (or any other newcomer's) gameplay there shouldn't have been another rep. As much as I wanted Chrom, I would have been hella salty if he was just clone status (which I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been, based on his animations in Robin's final smash). I have to deal with it, but my jimmies are still rustled that she is a clone.

Robin didn't impress me but I didn't care because his/her moveset was given accurate representation. Lucina on the other hand got swindled.

  14. sdL50.jpg

The thing is, Lucina has her own animations to draw from. Marth's were drawn from SNES swordmasters. Lucina had a base they could from. This is lazy design. Come on, now. I mean for goodness sake why does she even have Marth's stance when she has her own sword wielding stance? This smells fishier than a seafood market. As much as I wanted Chrom, I definitely wouldn't have minded Lucina if they actually made her.... Lucina. If she had a few similarities to Marth then fine, but the whole moveset?

Why is any criticism of Smash instantly written off as butthurt? :MarcusYoung:
