  1. Gaiden, huh? That's certainly interesting, especially for someone in the states. It's not often you find an American fan who started with one of the Japan-only releases, especially when it's Gaiden. Agree on that. There are ways they could implement the avatar system in a way that doesn't ruin the lore (like a sort of "second-hand account of the legend" sort of thing), but since it ultimately looks like it won't be implemented at all, there's no risk of the plot being subverted to focus more on some insignificant Gary Stu. Yeah, and the dungeon crawling looks to be improved. It's like more modern RPGs with dungeon crawling, such as the Tales of games. Using the term "knights" is kind of confusing because usually "knight" refers to the armor knights in the later entries, but for Gaiden it refers to the base horseback units. Though since we don't have images of cavalier units, and because in Echoes they refer to the armors as "knights", I'll assume you're talking about characters like Valbar. And to that, I'll say I'm also interested in using him and potentially other armors. I think there was a discussion about witches somewhere on this board. As long as they aren't too broken, I'm fine with them. Well, I think a few people (and by "a few", I mean, like, two people) did partial LPs of Gaiden. That being said, I don't think anyone's done an LP of the SRPG Maker version of it, and it's sometimes more entertaining to watch someone play a game they actually enjoy. Go to the FE NES/SNES era board on this site; it's a pinned topic. The topic is titled "[COMPLETE] Fire Emblem Gaiden PC Translation". It's a game that was made using the program "Sim RPG Maker 95".
  2. I'm always big on trainee/villager types, so I immediately used the villagers. Tobin was my least favorite of them. Faye might also be less favored as a character if she winds up a Catria/Cordelia 2.0 as far as her relationship to Alm goes, but I'm sure they'll make her useful in some way so I'll probably wind up using her a lot. Alm and Celica were obviously very useful. Saber is just fun because you find him drunk, slurring his words when you recruit him. And though they always lost HP when they healed units, the clerics were still very useful. And though I never got to the point where you recruit them, I just know that all the Whitewing sisters are useful because that's how they've always been. Five Wyvern Lords isn't too much in Shadow Dragon, is it? Archers... They might have really good range, but I think I remember having trouble hitting foes with them. @Chin Discussion, Phallic armor would be ideal, but that chin is almost enough to make the Crimson Chin cry, so I think that's all that's really necessary. Though really, everyone should have phallic armor. Those bows may be inaccurate, but when they hit, they sting hard.
  3. I totally forgot about this map. Probably because it was that dull. Also, your point shows just how clueless I am about the fandom. I've played the games, sure, but I know next to nothing about how much of the fandom works aside from the fact that they're apparently divided on every game in the series. Which honestly seems to be every fandom nowadays. I'm betting there'll be an item. Or encounter rate will be tied to difficulty. If nothing else, there's a spell you get at some point in Gaiden that outright removes a number of enemies. New thought regarding the topic... When I said I thought Echoes would bridge for newer fans, I was only thinking from my own perspective; I recognize that many newer fans won't find Echoes appealing for numerous reasons. But regardless, this is all that really matters to me as someone who has grown accustomed to niche games: Also, I think regardless of whether the game is good or not, I think one thing we can truly bridge on is that the music is pretty damn good... right? Or maybe that's just me...
  4. I believe that it might bring newer fans like myself into the older games, though I speak as a fan who is far more engrossed in the series than probably a lot of other new fans are. But the irony is that even though the game is staying fairly true to Gaiden, I'm not sure if it'll sit well with older fans. Gaiden, from what I can tell, is considered a black sheep of the series due to its unique gimmicks. And it looks like at least some of those gimmicks will remain, so I'm sure Echoes will be just as much a mixed bag for vets as Gaiden is. So what I'm basically saying is I think there'll be a bridge, but it's a one-way bridge for the most part.
  5. Hmm... Well, I'll try my best to offer my opinion in a way that helps you. First, I'll talk about the good bits of all the games. Conquest obviously has the best gameplay. However, Birthright's gameplay is good as well; people here keep forgetting that it's meant to appeal to newbs of the series brought in by Awakening (or Fates) who might not be very good at strategy games yet. I get it doesn't appeal to vets, but that doesn't make it bad. I also think both Hoshido and Nohr have some great characters; Hoshido has Oboro, Takumi, Saizo, Kaze, Mozu, Shiro, and Mitama, while Nohr has Beruka, Leo, Arthur, Charlotte, Flora, Forrest, and Ophelia (if only her father weren't in this game). And I'll say that every character - even the bad ones - has at least one good support. Above all else, the gameplay is improved. Now for the bad... The story is awfully, awfully flawed. When one story path is generally considered the best because it isn't as bad as the others, you know you've messed up. Plot devices royally screw not only the quality of the plot, but also the quality of some characters. The main dilemma centering around Garon is totally stupid; there's no reason you should care about him. Revelation just unloads a bunch of BS (basically unveils the already thinly veiled plot devices) and at one point excuses Corrin's idiocy, subverting it into a boon to his/her cause. On top of it all, there's no world-building. There was more world-building in the original NES FE games than there is in any Fates path. The most you get is in Revelation, but that does jack s**t to explain anything about the two major kingdoms that the majority of the game takes place in. There are also some characters who are... ehhhhh, not great. Not many really like Peri. Various Hoshidan characters are kind of flat and gimmicky, like Setsuna; her thing is that she acts like she's high all the time and falls into traps a lot. Sure, she seeks to improve her skills, but she does little to improve her character unlike units such as Oboro, who actually tries to get over her racism to work with Nohrian allies. Camilla is, in my opinion, not much more than a fanservice character whose defining traits are based off of what made Tharja so popular. Simply put, I don't like her. I like her even less because people tend to use their made up head canon to explain why she's the best character ever. Lastly, Revelation has, without a doubt, the worst gameplay. It's drawn out as hell, it's gimmicky without bringing challenge, and it's mindless. It just feels like it all was cobbled together at the last moment. BR at least feels like it had a bit of thought put into it; every facet of Revelation feels like it's just there to prolong gameplay. The sole reason I even choose to play it anymore is to get all the supports. But that's only fun on occasion. Other stuff to mention... People call "wasted potential" a flaw... What they generally mean is that pre-release news of Fates gave players the impression that it would be morally ambiguous and more politically involved. Now, I don't consider that to be a flaw of the game as much as it is a problem with the game industry in general (people's expectations versus industry honesty and rhetoric). However, there is wasted potential in other things in the game that actually could be considered "flawed". The most notorious example is Scarlet. She could've provided world-building and a interesting Nohrian perspective. And for the limited amount of writing she gets, she's fairly good. But because there's so little to her, she is wasted potential. Same goes for the main villains and the various tribes.
  6. @The DanMan A shame that the Whitewings didn't win, but they had to make room for their princess, didn't they? As for Tiki's voting conundrum... I think they can be counted on their own. Young Tiki and old Tiki are fairly different. Plus, if they combined to beat some other 6th place characters (as in, both the 6th place characters of Archanea and Awakening), which era would have a rep cut? Or if they don't cut a rep, then what's even the point of combining the Tiki's except to sate mere curiosity? Basically, where would a combined Tiki fit in all of this? Also, I cast my votes to the Shadows of Valentia. Even though the last poll concluded with people wanting only 25-40 (which I assume was probably a misunderstanding for some), I'm still voting as if it'd have my ideal 40-50 characters, so I'll be casting my numbers in a way that'll reflect that. Out of curiosity, how far back in FE series chronology does your experience go? I'm familiar with all but the Jugdral era stuff, but even then, I at least know about Sigurd and how his story ends thanks to osmosis and memes.
  7. Don't they say he also was the man who kill Bin Laden and was a vital liaison between Russia and America who helped deescalate the Cuban Missile Crisis? Yeah, these Kris rumors keep getting out of hand. Also, I just happened upon a Kris bashing thread on GameFAQs today, lmao Anyway, I submitted my votes. I'm not too surprised that Palla is more popular here, as she plays that "older sister" role that FE fans seem to like a lot. No, I'm not trying to compare Camilla to Palla. I sent my lot to Catria, but honestly I like all the Whitewing sisters. If just one of them gets in, that's fine by me.
  8. Well... I like Frederick, too. And not just for his memes... He's the quirky, overly protective dad Chrom and Lissa never had. Which is bittersweet, since their actual dad was apparently a dick. Also yeah, Takumi's definitely a more polarizing entity. I think he, along with Oboro, is the best written character in Fates, and plenty of people share that sentiment. But at the same time, I think people are put off by the memes he generates (especially a certain hashtag) and his disposition towards Corny Stu and the obsessive cow princess. The fact that he's a main character only brings those points to the forefront of the audience's attention. Anyway, the first (and only) 5* promotion I did was everyone's favorite racist fashionista, naturally. I'll be using the feathers and badges to probably bring a bunch of 3 star favorites of mine up to 4*, so it'll be a while until I get another upgrade-only 5* unit. Also seeing all these posts, I think it's about time I start working on the beginner party ._.
  9. The news that there's no avatar is kind of a relief. Part of me was a little curious to see how it'd be handled if it ended up being a feature, but I also recognize that the avatar in New Mystery basically shat on Marth's legacy by taking the spotlight too often. I ultimately want Alm and Celica to get their due tribute and with no avatar to get in the way of that, it only becomes more likely. Also, I thought we sort of already confirmed there was no pair-up? Or was that just conjecture? I've followed the news of this game well enough, but I forget some things. And though we've seen them a few times already, I just want to say that those monsters look pretty spoopy. So that means the Deliverance Hideout is what was once called "Rebellion HQ"? Definitely fits the informal nature of the location better. A den filled with undead monsters is the last thing I'd think of when I hear the word "headquarters".
  10. I don't want 50+ characters because if you're gonna do that much, that probably means the characters will have less work put into them. You can't expect 70 characters to all have unique, well-made move sets unless you've been building up to that like all the warriors series' have done. I'd prefer 40-50, as I think it's a nice balance. Though honestly, I expect 20-35. Though I most certainly want to see this turn into a series if successful and for the roster to eventually hit a hundred or so.
  11. Definitely gonna at least give 'em a try, especially if they're Maribelle, L'Arachel, Brady, Forrest, and/or Serra. I don't care if they turn him into a prancing troubador or a hulkish fighter, I've gotta give our favorite Tomato Prince a fair shake.
  12. All of them are upgrading from 4* to 5* rarity, including Tharja. I know some are unlisted, but the stats I have for these units vary from the ones on the spreadsheet, so I'm including them anyway. Name: Oboro HP: 19 Atk: 16 Spd: 7 Def: 8 Res: 5 Weapon Skill: Heavy Spear Assist Skill: N/A Special Skill: N/A Name: Tharja HP: 17 Atk: 18 Spd: 8 Def: 5 Res: 5 Weapon Skill: Rauorblade Assist Skill: N/A Special Skill: N/A Name: Est HP: 17 Atk: 18 Spd: 7 Def: 5 Res: 8 Weapon Skill: Heavy Spear Assist Skill: N/A Special Skill: N/A Name: Gwendolyn HP: 23 Atk: 15 Spd: 4 Def: 13 Res: 6 Weapon Skill: Killer Lance Assist Skill: N/A Special Skill: N/A Name: Cecilia HP: 17 Atk: 14 Spd: 6 Def: 6 Res: 7 Weapon Skill: Gronnraven Assist Skill: N/A Special Skill: N/A Name: Cherche HP: 20 Atk: 18 Spd: 6 Def: 7 Res: 4 Weapon Skill: Hammer Assist Skill: N/A Special Skill: N/A
  13. I'm sorry, I can't just pick one character, the stories are an absolute mess. We need more focus on everyone besides Corrin (the focus on Corrin is probably the biggest reason I don't like him/her). Previous FE's show that they can focus at least a little on this many characters and more without the story getting bogged down too much. Yet character focus and world building are Fates' greatest weak points relative to the rest of the series.
  14. It probably means we'll be getting a few new characters. I mean, I'm definitely not expecting ten, but I think around two or four is a good number to expect. Though I don't think we'll be getting very many more villagers since five is already quite a large number of trainee-type characters. I guess that's just a difference in opinions, though I'm not sure if you mean that those that you listed are tokens so much as tropes. Like, how is the pegasus knight trio a "token"? There're three of them! That's about as non-token as a class can get in this series. I know Efi is token because she's the only female villager among a pool of five villagers, and she's (probably) the only female character in Alm's initial gang. And I'm well aware that Gaiden had little character development. So did Shadow Dragon and Mystery of the Emblem. Everyone craps on the DS Shadow Dragon remake for not adding supports or whatever, but I played through it and enjoyed it well enough. Really, if Echoes is more the same, I can't complain. It is a remake, after all.
  15. @Light Strategist If there's a CaC, I'll probably just make someone from the series that I like who isn't present in the game.
  16. I got a 5* Eirika on day two of the family bonds focus. After getting a bunch of repeats, I was absolutely elated when she appeared. Though aside from that, it's still just Roy. But damn if he ain't a team player, especially with dat Triangle Adept. And I'm slowly but surely forging a path to a *5 star Oboro.
  17. Myrmidons didn't exist in Shadow Dragon/Mystery of the Emblem until their respective remakes, so there's a chance we'll see more classes than what was in Gaiden. I think in regards to what @Thunderstar said about mages, it could be a branching promotion for both genders; either sage or priest from the mage class. I mean technically, villagers already have a branching promotion in this game, so you might get other branching promotions as well. I always hate when devs do things for the sake of filling a quota without putting further thought into it. I'm hoping that for Efi and any other new characters, they'll put some actual effort into making them actual characters instead of just numbers with half-baked writing and stats.
  18. With the speculation and talk about FE characters that'll be in this game, I've thought a bit about which of the likely candidates I'd want to use. People almost unanimously seem to think we'll at least get all the Fates royals, Lucina, Tiki, Caeda, and (obviously) all the other owners of the blades we saw in the trailer. So from that pool of characters (and others you think are likely), which do you think you'll be using the most/maining? And for what reasons? Do you simply like the characters, or do you think they'll play better than the others? Or do you think you'll give everyone equal time? I'm thinking I'll probably be fiddling around with fliers just to see how they'd play, and then moving on to using mostly Marth and his family. If Hector or Ike get in, I'll probably be putting some time into using them as well, as I always like playing heavy hitters in these kinds of games. I might also see about playing a sword and magic user, like Leo, Robin, or Celica.
  19. Not sure if I support the notion that Efi has a crush on Cliff (or vice versa). She could be the envy of some villagers, but I'd imagine all the playable villagers' relationships toward each other are strictly platonic. Though of course, that's just pure conjecture on my part. I'd also imagine that in keeping in line with the trend of making classes more gender-equal, they'll either give female villagers an alternate class line entirely or merely give her the same options as the men. As for her stats/growths, she might be more lopsided. Probably really good speed, but poor defense, or something like that. Res will probably be around in Kliff's ballpark.
  20. I enjoyed it while it was still fresh. Occasionally, I'll come back to it like I do with Awakening. Though I do so less and less. I've never hated this game and I don't think I ever will, but the only reason for me to come back to it is to meet and bond with some of the characters all over again. Which means that most of the time, I'm playing Revelation, even though I prefer the other two paths. If they fed this game more DLC, I would've stayed longer. Aside from the Festivals, I was looking forward to something akin to Apotheosis.
  21. Hoho, allow me to tell you about parallel universes. Also, inb4 it's turned into a stealthy "which path is best written" topic. I think sensibly, I'd prefer Birthright. With the necessary adjustments - give us world building, more characterization, and a few interesting twists - it could be a FE story on par with lots of other FE stories. And yeah, it'd be nice if we could get more Nohrians to help flesh out the world and bring some non-Hoshidan blood aboard. I mean more than just Mr. "Most Obsessive Best Friend" and your loyal servants. And give me a way to save Flora; that death was hot n' spicy may-may-ness, yeah, but it was also really stupid. But I digress. People have already stated reasons CQ and Revelation can't be/shouldn't be canon. They're poorly written, they can't stand on their own, and one of them ruins the whole point of the rest of Fates. BR isn't as poor in writing quality, and it doesn't commit the latter sins.
  22. I chose Hoshido first because I wanted to climb the ladder of difficulty instead of jumping right into the meat of the challenge. I feared that if I played Conquest, I would find Birthright to be boring. It would've been nice if Revelation was the most difficult, since they intend for you to play it last. I totally didn't jump into it while still playing through Conquest.
  23. Well, I don't primarily judge by looks, but... So Hoshido has Hana, Oboro, and Setsuna... if we're judging by game/alignment (as in for or against Nohr), then Scarlet's in there as well. Probably Rinkah as well, though she, along with Fugo and Hayato, feels like more of a neutral entity. Nohr, meanwhile, has Flora, Beruka, and Charlotte. Possibly Selena as well, though it's hard getting over the fact that she was literally designed to look as tsundere as she acts. Then there are those that are neutral, but are from specific places. Mozu, who seems to be from Hoshido, Felicia seems alright (I dunno, Flora just looks more... mature?)... maybe Azura, too, though from certain angles, she isn't quite as attractive. Since Anna comes from the DLCrealms, I'll include her in this batch as well. I'm not counting the children because... I mean, how weird is it to pine for your friends' and siblings' kids? Also, Hyperbolic-Time-Realms is goddamn stupid, and holy shit, Nohr, how come your children get to be so attractive? Even one of your men is absolutely beautiful.
  24. For representation purposes, I want characters from Sacred Stones! Give me the lords and some other characters, like Lute, Joshua, Innes, or L'arachel. I'd also want some Radiance representation. Just because the series fell in a gutter at that time (and is also way too goddamn expensive) doesn't mean it didn't have some of the best characters! Ike, Soren, Elincia, Nephenee, Mia, Micaiah, Shinon, Volke... I'd love to see them all in FE Warriors, and more. If we're to stick with confirmed reps... Well, I think that Caeda would be in order. I want to see the flowing style of a spear fighter/holy lancer in Oboro or Shiro, as well. Merric or Linde would be good for infantry mages, while Leo could fill the role of a mounted mage. If we get a fighter/berserker/warrior type, Basilio all the way. We'll probably get a musical character (dancer/singer), so I'll throw my lot into Olivia or Feena on that one. For trainee/villager, I'll go broke for Mozu. Thief type should be one of the christmas ninjas in Fates... or Mister "Tick Tock, Time to Frock". As for other characters? All the lords of the GBA FE's, Sigurd, Alm and Celica, Lilina... There's a lot I'd want for there to be in the game. Though I'm only expecting maybe an eighth or less of this.
  25. It's the general principle that you have to keep in mind, not specific examples and situations. What your buddy is basically saying is that you want to play defensively. Also, TL;DR, you can use this tactic to kill bosses, grind for experience, and deal with as many strong foes as possible. It has great versatility if you know how to use it. Instance One you can use baiting: Instance Two: Instance Three: Another key for this is that you also need to be thinking a few turns ahead, and taking every possibility and every enemy around you into consideration. Generally speaking, enemies prioritize attacks like this: units within their range > units they can ORKO > units with the most HP. That unit with 15 HP in the earlier example (under instance one) won't matter if there's a killable or more feeble unit within the enemy's attack range. It may not seem like it from these small examples, but baiting's a very wide-ranged tactical principle. Knowing how and when to bait is crucial in many Lunatic Conquest chapters. Also, sorry if my rambling style doesn't really help you.
